Inkulinati - Delayed Release and Reasons Behind It
Hello Scribes,
A few of you have been wondering about our release schedule. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to release Inkulinait in the timeframe that we originally planned. In this update we want to explain to you why we needed to push back Inkulinati’s release date. It wasn’t an easy situation to be in and many factors contributed to this delay. Let us explain step by step why the delay occurred.
No matter the place on earth, this year wasn’t easy. The coronavirus pandemic has affected everyone to a greater or lesser extent. As a small indie studio located in Poland, we experienced this new reality in a very hard way. The incessant lockdowns, movement bans, quarantines, closed offices, and much more - surely none of these things are strange to you too... Forced to stop working in our office, we had to learn all over again how to carry out our planned activities effectively, each in the comfort of our own home. After a while, getting used to the new reality, we caught the wind in our sails again. But that took some time to adapt. The pandemic has had a massive impact on us, both professionally and unfortunately, also personally. It is a huge reason why our game is delayed.
Secondly, we also decided to push back the release based on the feedback from you - our community. As you may know, a while back we released our Inkulinati demo. This demo was also delivered to both streamers and players. We received a lot of good feedback from people that played it. We received a lot of suggestions on how to make the game clearer, easier to understand, more fun, etc etc. We took all of the comments and opinions seriously. We want to implement a lot of what you suggested, but unfortunately, we also need a bit more time to do so. We feel that having a better game released a little bit later is worth the wait. So thank you once again for your feedback!
This also brings us to the next point. We are really, really, really obsessed with quality. After all, we take our cue from medieval scribes, who spent whole days with sweat dripping from their brows transcribing voluminous books... To put it simply, we do not want to release a game that’s half-baked. We want it to be a perfectly moist cake. It is our first game from our little studio, and we want our debut title to be the best game it possibly can be. We can’t afford to deliver something subpar. Since we are new to the industry, we need that gap of time so that we can implement new solutions, try alternatives, etc. It is our first game, so it can take a bit longer for us to develop compared with other more experienced devs. But we do seek external opinions to see that we are on the right track and that our mechanics, design choices, etc are as good as they can be. After all, we can’t disappoint 700-year-old scribes ;).
More tasks also means more work. To deliver Inkulinati in all its glory, our small team had to expand with new crew members. It takes time to bring up new Yaza Games members to speed and show the ropes, but it is definitely worth it.
However, we also have some good news - we are coming back to the office!!!! Most of us are now vaccinated and our Warsaw members will be able to come back to the office, meet in person, and work like it was before the pandemic. On that side, it feels like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel...
We hope that these few paragraphs alleviated some of your disappointment with the delay of the game. We are trying our best to bring you Inkulinati as quickly as possible, but we also want you to receive a version of Inkulinati that’s fun, memorable, and as bug-free as it can be.
We will be giving you more updates on how the game is progressing throughout the year. We will be keeping you in the loop. And here’s a little taste of what we’ve been working on in the last few months. We hope you’ll like what you’ll see :)
Ok, that’s it from us. Do let us know if you have any questions or comments - just write them below.
Take care and until next time,
Yaza Games Team

Look, up in the sky! A new Inkulinati Army revealed!
**Market square, high noon, a royal messenger enters the rostrum and begins to read the message. The sound of trumpets echoes around.**
Hear ye, hear ye!
Your Yaza Games team is proud to introduce a new Inkulinati Master who has entered the fray! This holier than thou Inkulinati Master has plenty of tricks up his robe’s sleeve. Ladies and Gentlemen, Peasants and Villagers, here it is, straight from Assisi – Saint Francis!
Saint Francis' love for God’s creatures is known far and wide! So it is no surprise that he commands an army of feathered, gray, extremely cute (don't let that fool you, though), and oh so adorable! *ahem* army of pigeons! Their unique advantage is that as flying units, they cost very little of Living Ink. And they have one more other unique skill - they coo. When this gray bird has finished its movement and is close by to another one of its kind, it begins to coo.
For those who may not know, a cooing pigeon is a very dangerous pigeon! Imagine this! You see a pigeon - not that frightening. You see two pigeons next to each other – OK, you might be wary. But then you notice that one of the pigeons has an... aureola! That cooing together with the areola enhances the power of its attack two-fold. Maybe even trifold! But that's not all, cooing, which is undeniably very pleasing to the ear, is also healing. You can imagine how difficult the clash with Saint Francis and his army of Pigeons will be…
**The crowd begins to murmur amongst themselves.**
Quiet, please! Our beloved Yaza Games team has one more announcement to make. There's one more gentleman who needs to be introduced – The Traveling Frog. This green fellow spits poison and screams painfully, which makes him a particularly obnoxious opponent. He jumps far and stays underwater without drowning. Handsome and dangerous are his qualities. Once again everyone, please give a warm welcome to The Travelling Frog.

Ok, that’s it, everyone. You may now go home or return to your duties. Cherrie-o! Well, come on now! Shoo! Shoo!
Farewell

A Glimmer of Ape Professor’s Ape Army
**The Royal Kingsguard enters the Royal chamber**
Sir Godfrey! May I interrupt this beautiful day with important information? Our scout just came back from his mission and he brings very interesting news. Glad he is still alive, he miraculously escaped with his life! But let me start from the beginning, my lord...
**Atmospheric music echoes through the chamber**
A few days ago, our scout set off on an important mission to discover new lands. After miles and miles of wandering and scouting, he has reached a faraway land that we have not yet known of before. But don't rejoice too soon, my Lord! Unfortunately, according to our scout, these areas are under the rule of another Inkulinati Master - The Ape Profesor!
This mighty Ape Profesor is no simple Ape - or Professor. He has under his command an army that is different from all the armies we have known so far. The army of Apes…
**The smile slowly disappears from underneath Sir Godfrey's helmet**
We don't know much about them yet, and the scout has said that “more details will be revealed soon”, whatever that means. What we do know is that this Ape Army has a bit of liking towards the drink. This thirst for alcohol allows them to gain a special perk, but at the same time, it can be a bit of a weakness to them too. As you may recall my Sir, from your School of Inkulinati days, alcohol is a double-edged sword.
This is all the information our scout has managed to get for now about this new army. When he has rested and gained strength we will send him on another spy mission.
Thank you for your time, my Sire. I will show my own way out the door.
A Little Tease of the Ships and High Seas Map and of the Soundtrack
Official Royal Transcript. 25th day of the first month of God’s year that is 1221. For Royal eyes only.
**Royal scribe enters the Royal chambers**
Sir Godfrey. Sir Godfrey!!
I am sorry to interrupt your morning routine, but I *need* to show you a snippet of the Ships and High Seas prototype the Yaza Games scribes, or “programmers” as they call themselves, did recently. You have to watch the naval battling right now Sir!
[previewyoutube="2Ycwfbtrrvo;full"]
**Video ends. Sir Godfrey is taken back**
Sir Godfrey? Are you ok? Why are you so green on your face? Medic!! We need the Royal Medic!! We might have a case of seasickness here! Everyone else here, DO NOT let Hildegarde know about this!
**Ten minutes later. Royal Musician enters the Royal chambers**
Oh my brave, fist-pumping Sire! While we wait for the Royale Medic, let me play you an official piece of music from Inkulinati itself. Composed by Aleksander from Yaza Games, it’ll get you in the battling mood in no time my liege!
[previewyoutube="e-GyHbzEH70;full"]
**Sir Godfrey nods in approval. His Royal foot moving to the beat in the most Royal of ways**
End of Royal transcript.
Hope you enjoyed what we showed you today. Let us know your thoughts below. Before we end, one more thing. We want to wish you a Happy, Happy 2021. We feel that it’s going to be one heck of an exciting New Year!
Until next time,

Our Real-Life Marginalia Inspirations
Hello Master Illuminators,
In today’s update, we want to dedicate this space to our inspirations - the original Inkulinati Masters from 100’s of years ago. We are talking about medieval scribes, monks, and illuminators that create these wonderful worlds over 700 years ago. Apart from the fact that medieval marginalia are bizarre and outright hilarious, what we really love about them is that they made us look at the middle ages in a totally different light.
When we think about the Middle Ages, we might think about the tropes we learned from school, books, and pop culture in general: big castles, brave (and not so brave) knights, powerful kings, monks, huge feasts, battles (chaaaaargeee!!!!), burning stakes, hungry peasants, disease, and many other not so fun things (tortures. We forgot to mention tortures). We imagine that the people who lived in those times were brave, virtuous, and probably very serious. They definitely weren’t funny, that’s for sure. Well, it turns out that we were very, very wrong.
So, let's take a closer look at these medieval manuscripts that we talk so much about. Most of them were written down/created by monks and contained texts dedicated to faith, religion, science, nature, and medicine. However, there are also some that describe famous events, battles, stories, poems, and other cultural events. To give those texts more pizzazz and glamour, they would have beautiful decorations adorning them, usually found on the margins of the text - hence being called marginalia. And it’s here, on the margins of manuscripts, that some of the most hilarious drawings and paintings ever depicted by man can be found. Check these out:
Missal, Amiens c. 1323 (The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Ms. 78 D 40, fol. 177r)
Gorleston Psalter, England 14th century (British Library, Add 49622, fol. 133r)
Bestiary, England c. 1400-1425 (Copenhagen, Kongelige Bibliotek, Gl. kgl. S. 1633 4°, fol. 10r)
Summer volume of the Breviary of Renaud/Marguerite de Bar, Metz ca. 1302-1305 (Verdun, Bibliothèque municipale, ms. 107, fol. 100v)
As you can see, there are many bizarre characters, situations, and moments captured in these marginalia. A knight fighting a snail? An entire procession made up of rabbits? Bonnacon fire-farting on a knight? Trumpets stuck in bottoms!?! And a weird looking hybrid! The best part is that some of these themes/motifs repeat themselves in other manuscripts too (ie, the rabbit army fighting the dog army). It almost seems like they were medieval meme’s - a little cultural joke.
And this is the reason why we love marginalia so much. It made us realise that people that lived on this earth 100’s of years ago also laughed at absurdity. That no matter how serious the situation is, people always found time to laugh. And it’s also ok to laugh at bum jokes, poop jokes, and any other stupid jokes out there. Laughing at tomfoolery is something that’s ingrained in us, it’s part of our DNA. And laughing at these things will certainly not be the end of the world. (as a side note, if I lived in medieval times, I would love to be an illuminator. You have a king say to you “I need a new book about the latest medical practices''. To which you reply “of course my liege. I see a penis tree and monkeys throwing poop as a perfect decoration for it.” Best job ever.)
So, these are our inspirations, and our reasons as to why we fell in love with medieval marginalia. What do you think about marginalia? Do they make you laugh like us too? Do you like silly things as well? Heck, maybe you already have a favorite marginalia piece. All of your thoughts, post them below. We want to hear them!
Until next time,
Hildegard, Sir Godfrey, and Yaza Games Team
