If you've been on the fence about Janky Tanks, now you can try it out for free! The free demo of Janky Tanks is now available.
There are fewer features in the demo, but you'll still be able to get a good taste of what Janky Tanks is like. It still supports up to 8 players (including AI players), but there are a few limitations:
Only one vehicle
Only one stage (Grassy Null, contains 6 maps)
3 powerups (Ground Pow, Rapid Fire, and Health)
Fewer gameplay options
Also, like the full version of the game, it only has controller support (no support for keyboard and mouse yet).
Have you tried the demo? We'd appreciate your feedback!

Version 0.3 Released - AI Players!
There's a new update to Janky Tanks, and it's a pretty big one... you can now play against computer-controlled opponents! Finally, you can play Janky Tanks without anyone else in the room. And since the game supports up to 8 human players, there's nothing stopping you from playing against 7 other computer opponents! (In fact, we'd encourage it... Janky Tanks is a much better game with more players.)
Here's the full list of updates:
<*> AI opponents added to the game
<*> Player selection menu updated, now allows you to add and remove AI opponents
<*> End screen UI fixed for most screen resolutions
<*> BUG FIX: Dualstick controls can now drive the heavy tank with the left stick (thanks to sam for this bug report) <*> BUG FIX: Vehicles of the same color can now score on each other
Version 0.2.2 Released - New Vehicle and UI improvements!
Hey, Janky Tanks fans!
While Hyper Hippo has been busy with another big Steam launch recently – Adventure Capitalist, go check it out! – worry not, because Janky Tanks has not been forgotten.
The big news this time is a new vehicle... a tank! (Yes, we've finally added something that the name of the game has implied the existence of all along... yay, us.) What makes this vehicle different? Glad you asked:
Heaviest than the other two vehicles, harder to knock back
Slightly faster shot rate
Not as much air control; can't jump as high
Bigger target
There are also some other improvements that might interest you:
Made the air dodge visual effect work properly
Random level select now available for when you can't decide which level pack to use
Added "Score Limit"; can now play matches as low as best of 3 or as high as best of 15
Made the button choices on the vehicle select menu screen more consistent (A always moves you forward, B always moves you back)
Bottom score UI will now properly display the vehicle you're driving
Fixed collider of the smallest car
Controller tutorial properly scales to screen resolution
Minor level decoration
One last thing... we've been noticing an occasional bug where a vehicle would become completely stuck to a part of the terrain, unable to move at all. We think this update fixes it, but we'd like some help. Has anyone else experienced this? Does this update fix the problem?
Version 0.2.1 Released - New Level Pack, Destructible Blocks, and more!
This update to Janky Tanks introduces a third level pack to the game, featuring the game's newest element: destructible blocks. Levels with these blocks are relatively safe... at first. But will you be the last one standing when the blocks get destroyed by cannon fire or rising water?
Other updates:
Settings menu: adjust the music/sound levels, toggle powerups, or even change the amount of time you have before the water rises
Game UI improvements for lower resolution monitors. Now the UI won't be covering the bottom half of the screen.
The dash on the bumper controls have changed from double-tap to single-tap
Other miscellaneous bug fixes
Version 0.2.0 RELEASED - New vehicle support, Map packs, and more!
Our latest Janky Tanks release is a big one. We have added lots of things and really worked on the visual polish in the game… we hope you like it!
Release Notes:
New Vehicles - You can now select from two different vehicles! This will allow us to add an assortment of vehicles, and maybe even Workshop-submitted rides.
New Map Packs - Again, this is awesome because it will allow us to create a wide assortment of themed map packs.
Brand-new level textures - Much prettier than before.
Powerup - Bouncy Shots - These shots bounce all over the place.
Water death particle effect - You go sploosh when you hit the water.
Water wave effect - Just like real water, our waves move to and fro
Powerup improvements - The ground pow now marks affected tanks, so players will score if they use the power-up to knock others off the map.
Powerup improvements - Shielded vehicles are no longer damaged by ground pows, (they still get knocked into the air).
Lots of bug fixes and tweaks.
As always, thank you so much for all your feedback and suggestions! The more we here from you, the better we can make this game!!
Sneak peek of upcoming update
Hi Janky Tanks fans!
We have a pretty big update coming this week – overhaul of the main menu, new maps, multiple artistic changes, and more. However, for now, here's a preview of the newest powerup... Bouncy Shots.
Also, we need your help. The population of the earth is 7 billion, and as you might imagine, a significant number of those people haven't heard of Janky Tanks. We want to tell the world about our fun little game, but how should we do it? Contact famous bloggers? Annoy YouTube celebrities until they listen to us? Banner ads? Let us know! (But please don't say banner ads... we hate those too.)
Version 0.1.3 RELEASED - Shield powerup, Air Dash tuning, and more
Release notes:
Powerup - Shield (NEW): Grabbing this powerup will give you an instant 10-second immunity from all projectile attacks.
Powerup - Health: Now divides your knockback damage in half. (Previously subtracted your knockback by a flat rate of 60%.)
Air dash: Changed buttons to activate "air dash" in twinstick controls. Now activated by single-tapping the top bumpers. Double-tapping the left joystick is still active, and air dash for bumper controls are unchanged. (EDIT: It appears that the change to the twinstick air dash did cause some problems for the bumper controls. This will be fixed in the next update.)
Sound effects: Added sound effects to Main Menu and certain in-game events (such as the air dash), increased volume of water rising audio.
Controls: Can now end match and quit game with keyboard controls.
Bug Fix: Removed a situation in which a player's own projectiles could cause damage.
A big thanks to Vaelsh for giving us the feedback about the air dash being controlled by a controller's bumper buttons. We agree... it is a better place for them.
Janky Tanks Update #1 - What's Next?
Hey, Janky Tanks fans!
The game is on Steam, but is it complete? Nope! Hyper Hippo is just getting started on this game. We have a lot of features that we’d like to add; some soon, some later. Want a list of them? Here’s a partial list!
More Powerups. We have about 20 ideas for different powerups so far. One example that will be part of the next update is the Shield, which gives you 10 seconds of being immune to the damage and knockback of opponents’ bullets:
More Maps. This includes more map layouts, as well as different environments for battling. (It'd be pretty boring if this game were made of nothing but brown, nougat-covered rocks.)
Sound and UI Improvements. Let’s be honest, the UI in this game needs some work. We’re going to be tackling that, as well as making improving the game’s audio.
Other Vehicles. We like the tanks, but we’re very open to throwing common sense out the window, too. Sports cars, golf carts, cement trucks, tour buses – we want to see how this game plays with other vehicle types just as much as you do.
Controls. We’re still fine-tuning the game’s controls. For instance, right now you can tap the left thumbstick twice left or right to do what we call an “air dodge”. It’s super useful… so useful, in fact, that we want to move the function to the top bumpers on the controller.
We’ll be working on this and much more, but we want your feedback. What do you like? What do you want to see in the game?
