Spring Playtest
If you've been wanting to get some hands-on time with Stuntfest, now is a perfect time! From March 16th until March 23rd we're having an open playtest. Swing by our steam store and request access Today!
In this sprint we’ve been working on a myriad of different things to help improve First Time User Experience (FTUE), revisiting the structure and design of some of our existing maps, and developing our AI further so they feel more like other players and less like epic-driver-bots-of-doom.
Our biggest set of priorities in the run-up to Christmas is general stabilization, bug fixing, and getting the game back into the hands of the community to see what you all think of the changes. You’ll be seeing this pop-up a lot in future blog posts as it's super important to us to get you all back into the world of Stuntfest Worldtour ASAP. The same is also said for our server stabilization progress making sure your competitors are where they’re supposed to be … behind you!
Our first-time user experience has gone through a number of significant iterations since the project began, starting as a general game intro in which, you saw yourself approaching the stadium and were tasked with overcoming a number of obstacles to quickly learn the controls and mechanics integral to the Stuntfest gameplay. A lot of the feedback we received about this was that, while fitting, it really didn’t give the user opportunity to really get to grips with skills/gadgets/etc, they'd be using on a regular basis during their playtime, so we’ve made some pretty big changes.
First of all, we’ve made the tutorial into an instanced-based event in which you, accompanied by bots, really get a feel for everything you’ll need to use to get the most out of each Stuntshow. We added a splash of slowmo here and there to really give it that epic feeling and made sure the instructions are truly crystal clear for everyone to be able to understand.
Our programmers have also been hard at work adding some more believability to our bots and increasing the number of different ways they play. In general, our bots tend to follow “splines” we feed them which look a little like this;
Now, for those of you thinking “What the Heck?!”, let me explain. Recording the data from our developers and such we build a library of these splines based on how they played, the colours represent different states for the AI such as red meaning use nitro, blue meaning use Jetwing, and black meaning drive. The AI turns this information into in-game actions and you see the end result of an AI racing against you.
It gets way more complicated when you start adding event-to-event variables such as what happens if you slam into them or their car gets wrecked. This is where our programmers are hard at work, adding more splines, allowing the AI to understand the variation better and really expanding what they do on a moment-to-moment basis.
The more recordings we create, the more varied the bots will get and the better we actually play in those recordings, the better the bots will get as well.
If you’ve had a chance to get your mitts on Stuntfest at any point you’ll remember our tracks tend to mesh natural formations and man-made tracks together to create our events and, while this has worked for the most part, we wanted to revisit these structures to see if we could give our maps more of a natural feel while adding an influence of humans, rather than turning it into a construction site full of metal and such.
The goal of those changes is to make the tracks more readable and also to give us the opportunity to add more gameplay-impacting obstacles without making the maps look too chaotic.
This is happening for a number of maps such as Distance Dam and we’re looking into how we can add certain elements to each map to bring more of a theme to each one, making them instantly recognisable from each other stylistically. Additionally, we’ve begun work on the final knockout map and its first blockout.
We want to make the final race about proving you really are the best this stuntshow has to offer, so you’ll need to combine all the skills and gadgets you’ve employed to get this far to make it past the finish line first and secure the victory. We’ll have more to show coming soon!

Dev Blog - Sprint #31
Since Steam Next Fest we here at Pow Wow have been working to refine the Stuntfest World Tour based on your feedback and the experience we made with the Steam Next Fest. First of all, thank you all for participating in the Next Fest, and special thanks to each and every one of you who filled out the survey as it gives us a more detailed insight into where you, the community, stand in your enjoyment of our game. We’ll also share the results of the survey with you in a separate post. The idea behind this is to a) show you the overall results and also how we interpret your answers.
Alongside this, we wanted to give you all more of an insight into what's going into Stuntfest’s development behind the scenes and how we’re working on making our game the craziest and most explosive event it can possibly be every time you boot it up! As you will see we want to go also a few steps further and include all of you in the loop on a regular basis. To help give you all an understanding of how we work, I need to first explain to you how we divide and conquer. In the big picture, while we’re all one big team working on delivering a single game, we actually work in smaller sections so each group can tackle an area at a time so, in no particular order, these are our teams;
Game Mode This crew is in charge of the different game modes you see in the game (duh!). Every event you’ve competed in is their brainchild. From the races to the target range and beyond, these all started and ended with Game Mode. This team mainly consists of designers but also programmers who support on developing mode rules and level design elements (eg. Jump pads)
Meta The Menus, UI, servers and beyond! All the bits that bring everything and everyone together is handled by Meta. Making sure you know how much nitro you have left, being able to get from the hub to the garage, seeing the leader board between each event? All Meta.
3C – Character, Control, Camera. This one kinda says it on the tin but these are the people who create the characters, the cars, and the bits in-between. AI and net code and physics. All comes down to the 3C team. How the game knew you wrapped your car around the post? Because 3C told it.
Sprints Our teams work in so-called sprints, which are (in our case) 2 week increments in which we commit to certain sprint goals, and after each sprint we assess the results together. In the future we want to give you an overview on what we are planning at the beginning of each sprint and how it went.
Now you know the teams and how we work, we’ll get right to the point. Speaking of which, let’s find out what they’ve been up to this sprint.
This week Game Mode are focused on bringing back the Mini Map with a fresh coat of paint and testing some of the new events in the pipeline, more of which we’ll share in a later dev blog. Reason for removing it for the Steam Next Fest were some performance implications caused by the minimap. They’re also taking the time to clean up several aspects of already existing maps, specifically when it comes to the collectible vehicles which are dotted around. Alongside this, they’re also taking some time to balance the metrics of Crash Derby and Distance Jumps event.
The Meta Team is coming out swinging this sprint with an overhauled menu system, boasting a new style as well as better controller input/navigation along with improvements to the UI and dedicated servers in terms of performance. They’ve also been hard at work with the lore team defining some crucial aspects of our characters and the vehicles from a story standpoint, meaning you may be able to learn more about the competitors and our four-wheeled furies soon! Finally, for those who took part in Steam Next Fest, we should hopefully have a resolution to the pesky failure-to-eject bug in the very near future.
3C have been hard at work this sprint with a whole host of improvements to a huge number of things, this includes vehicle collision and netcode, performance and stability, VFX optimisation and AI. Not only are they making sure to improve the overall user experience for both first time and returning players but, they’re putting the pieces together for some new faces and maybe even a new set of wheels.
We can’t thank the Stuntfest Community enough for your support so far! Steam Nextfest was an absolute blast thanks to you all, it was great to see people challenging each other all across the discord and I had a great time wrecking with the best over the wheels worth of live streams we had.
Moving forward we’ll be doing our best to keep you in the loop of the development process, we’ll also be running playtests via our discord and showing off all sorts of shenanigans across social media so, make sure to get involved!
