V2.0.3 - Performance Improvements and Fixes

Hey everyone I've got a small update for you today. I've made some changes that should hopefully make a decent difference to your fps. On my machine it's up 20-30 fps on epic so that's not bad. Other than that I've done a quick fix to stop the bug where times of ~0 being were being uploaded to the leaderboards.

Kick Bastards 2.0 - MASSIVE UPDATE

Hey everyone,

We've got a massive update for you!! Welcome to Kick Bastards 2.0! We've made loads of changes to the game and added a bunch more content. Here are the highlights: we've added 15 new levels to the game, added a brand new mode, 'Spider-person mode', which lets you play through all the levels using a grappling hook that you can attach anywhere (replay LU-2 and LU-3 first for the best experience) and we've also made improvements to (almost) all the existing levels in the game (from small changes to full overhauls).

Here is the full list of changes:

Movement:

  • Made some small tweaks to how the player feels to move around.
  • Updated the grapple functionality so that holding the grapple key will now pull you in towards the grapple point. Pressing the jump key is now the only way to release the grapple. (Also updated associated tutorials on LU-2 and on new LU-3)
  • Added a grapple icon so it's clearer when you can use the grapple.
  • Made the conditions for starting a wallrun more lenient so it will work when you expect it to more often.
  • Removed the minimum time on the wall before you can jump out of a wall run.
  • Added a climb up buffer so that the climb up will feel considerably more consistent.

Levels:

  • Added 8 excellent new Apocalypse levels, 5 new Hell P2 levels and 2 Location Unknown levels.
  • Updated (almost) all the levels with visual improvements, clarity improvements and gameplay improvements. In some cases we did large overhauls to dramatically improve the levels.
  • Added a brand new mode, 'Spider-person mode', which lets you play through all the levels using a grappling hook that you can attach anywhere. (I'd strongly recommend replaying LU-2 and LU-3 before jumping into this!)

General:

  • Added a new platinum medal and shuffled the times so that bronze is the default when you aren't fast enough for the other medals.
  • Created new medal icons.
  • Updated the results screen to make it easier to navigate and to be more fun!
  • Improved the level restarting system to make it a quicker and generally smoother experience.
  • Fully rewritten the dialogue. It's much better now.
  • Updated the tutorial prompts to be less verbose.
  • Updated the save system to support multiple game saves.
  • Added an outline to all stuff that is kick-able to make it clearer that you can kick that stuff.
  • Added some additional secrets to some of the levels.
  • Updated the level select screen to be easier to navigate and to display the next virtual level to be unlocked with a lock on it.

Bug fixes and performance improvements:

  • Fixed mouse cursor disappearing when using the scroll bar in the level select screen.
  • Fixed a bug where the wizard wouldn't always look at you when shooting fireballs.
  • Did some additional performance improvements to the buses.
  • Fixed a bug where the tutorial wouldn't appear at the start of a level when using the don't play dialogue option.
  • Fixed bug where sliding up a slope and spamming jump would cause you to gain excessive speed.
  • Fixed a bug that made it so you needed to click an extra time on the Devil cut-out dialogues.

Performance improvements & bug fixes - V1.0.8 Now Live!

Hey everyone we have a small patch with some bug fixes and some performance improvements. We also we improved the look of low and medium settings so they are more in line with the intended look of the game without any performance costs.

Here is the full list of changes:

Performance:

  • General performance improvements (should be a big help for some people).
  • Adjusted the particle counts on the drifting bus to improve it's performance.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed virtual 3 and 12 not loading and instead returning to the main menu.
  • Fixed 100% complete bug not unlocking when achieving it.
  • Fixed the leaderboard loading symbol appearing over medals in the level select screen.
  • Camera Smoothing would sometimes be on even when it said it was off. This is now fixed.

Other:

  • Updated the medal times for Hell part 1 and Location Unknown Part 1 so that they take into account what you have learned so far. Also added some more leniency to the later levels in these parts to account for the fact that people need time to master the tech.
  • Turned off motion blur by default.
  • Moved the game quality option up to the top of the video settings.
  • Updated low and medium settings so that they look a lot better with a new high performance fog.
  • Updated the lighting on the virtual levels so they are a bit less dark (particularly on medium settings) and addressed the darkness on some specific levels.

Improved performance and new tutorials - Patch Notes v1.0.7

Hey everyone!

We’ve got quite a big update for you today, mainly featuring bug fixes and stuff but also some changes to address some issues that some of you may have had. The key takeaways are we upgrade the project engine version to improve performance, we’ve improved the tutorialisation in a bunch of places (go check out all 3 new tutorial levels!) and we’ve added a bunch of new options to the game to help you customise your experience.

I hope you all like the changes and if you have any questions then head over discord or pop them here on the forums!

This is the full list of changes in detail:

General:
Upgraded the project to Unreal 5.3 so that we can have better performance as our temp fix for the sparkly bug had a noticeable effect in this department. (This is the reason for the big patch size too, sorry!)
Made it so you can spam through the dialogue more easily.
The music no longer restarts when you restart a level.
Improved the mantle so that it will function better in more niche scenarios.

Tutorials:
Added 2 new hell levels to teach slide hopping and back kick.
Added Virtual_00 a new tutorial level to help explain some of the more advanced mechanics in the game.
Added some additional tutorialisation for the grappling hook to 2_02

Leaderboards:
Added in an indicator to the level end screen which shows which leaderboard rank you are currently on.
Added titles to the medals and collectable for a bit of added clarity on what they are. (also added a coloured lapel to the dev medal for consistency)
Fixed an issue so that the correct leaderboard will always display for the level you are on / looking at.

Levels:
Updated 5-04 with some tweaks to make it a bit easier and clearer in areas where people have been getting a bit stuck.
Made Hell_06 collectable easier to get to.

Options:
Added an option to adjust the resolution scale.
Added an option to use a simplified lava material. (This will prevent the lava flashing bug that a few people experienced)
Set camera smoothing off by default for m&k and added an option to enable it for m&k and a second option to enable/disable it for controller.
Added an option to turn off dialogue and stage titles.
Added an option to skip level end screens and to automatically move onto the next level.

Misc:
Made the building guy's voice affected by volume sliders.
Fixed an issue where the achievement for 100%ing the game wouldn’t always unlock. (If you have already 100% completed the game and the achievement hasn't unlocked then completing any level will unlock the achievement for you).

V1.0.6 Movement Updates and Leaderboard improvements

Hey everyone! Here is our first patch that isn't ahhhhh oh no bad bug oh no oh no oh no oh no. So here is a full list of what has changed:

  • Made the dialogue text scroll in for some extra juicyness.
  • Updated the auto step up height to be a bit more generous.
  • Updated the max walkable angle to be more generous (should make those pesky rounded corners not horrible to touch, like in V-01).
  • Made the basic kick a little snappier (has a slightly quicker intro and doesn't get held out as long).
  • Slightly sped up the end animation for the double kick.
  • Slightly sped up grapple launch animation.
  • Fixed a small issue with the slide where uncrouching in the air would check if you had something above your head (not sure if this was causing any issue tbh tho) And slighty reduced the radius of this check from 24 to 20.
  • Slightly reduced the max mantle distance form 190 to 170 and slightly reduced the max mantle height from 120 to 80.
  • Made the air wall kick push you away slightly more (1.5f to 2f).
  • Made the collectable in 1-03 a little easier to get to (and maybe a bit clearer too).
  • Updated 03-05 and 03-08 so they are a little easier for first time playthroughs and maybe a bit more interesting for replaying too.
  • Adjusted the collectable position in 03-02 to be easier to collect.
  • Fixed issue where times were being uploaded to the wrong level leaderboards.

Hope you all enjoy the new changes and there is going to plenty more fun content stuff to come!

As part of this we are doing a full wipe of the leaderboards as they were greatly affected by the leaderboard bug.

V1.0.5 Fixed the damn sparkles

- 100% definitely fixed that fucking sparkle bug, turns out it was a bug that epic introduced on the specific version of Unreal Engine we were using so that's a bit annoying but I found a workaround so we good now. (to any devs out there don't use 5.1 just update to 5.2 or 5.3 or down grade to 5.0)

- You can also now kick the chatting skeletons

Patch 1.0.4

Re-added level names into the level end screens and fixed the banners to display correctly

Patch 1.0.3

Anther attempt at fixing this sparkle bug, if it's still occurring try going into the options and turn off the post processing effects for now.

Patch 002 - Bug fixes and small fix for final level

- Hopefully fixed the glittery lights bug
- Adjusted the lighting settings for low and med settings so it doesn't look as dark
- Made some small clarity changes to the final level
