KOTCL developer diaries: the main heroes of the story

Knock-knock, adventurers!

Another week has flown by unnoticed, just like that, so here we are again. Take your healing potions, chase them down with cucumbers, and let's go!

The main characters

As we’ve shown in our previous diaries, each of our heroes’ classes has its own ‘skin’ so that they can be distinguished not only by their mechanics but also by their appearance. It so happened that you’ve already seen Vanadis and Persival, but Bjorn ended up in a locked cabinet and we haven’t shown him to anyone! But today we’re righting that wrong by showing you Bjorn’s transformation before the release:

He and Vanadis are the most complex characters in terms of animation due to their unique features. And while Vanadis' animals exist separately from her, Bjorn has to coexist with two souls in one body. So it’s no laughing matter for our animators – the most rebellious character demands the best animations! However, this week, Bjorn came to the animators quite spirited – so they had to animate both him and his spirit at the same time!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How Magic Happens

While we were having a tour around the animators’ room, we stumbled upon a rare recording of raw animation material, literally pieced together. We couldn't just leave it there, could we? Let's take a look at what this work looks like from the inside:

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Event animations, lost...and found

While we were retrieving Bjorn and his spirit from the animators’ room, we stumbled upon a file with an event animation. You've seen this gentleman many times, but he loves attention so much that we decided to show him to you to get you in the right mood for the weekend! We hope you indulge in hedonism as beautifully as this man does:

How are things in the palace?

A raven brought us good news: the first team test of the final battle is over! We looked through all the shortcomings, went over the rough spots, and handed the final battle back to our programmers. Now they have to polish the mechanics and process the code so that it's easier and more fun for you to play!
In addition, our tech department is fiercely fighting bugs and minor flaws that you’ve helped us catch and pin down! They don't allow us into their office, but inhuman sounds and a strong coffee smell are coming from behind their door. An ordinary person would feel too strong of an effect from this potion even if they simply inhaled its fumes, so let’s quietly pass by that door and hope that you won’t meet any talking boars on your path again.

Well, that's it for today! Don't forget to check out our social media and laugh at the memes we make during work breaks.

See you in the next diary!

KOTCL Developer diaries: a bit more about characters and cards

Knock-knock, adventurers!

We are happy to see you again. It's time for a new entry in our diary. This week was short but eventful. Anyway, let's start from the beginning! Polish your boots, pack your bags with potions, and let's go!

Persival and Bjorn in the land of animation

Preparing the main characters for release continues. In previous diaries, we showed you fresh animations of our characters. And in this diary... we'll show you some more animations!

⠀⠀⠀

Our artists have almost finished the main part of their work, which means our animators are very busy.

⠀⠀⠀

They’re working on each version of our heroes, giving them weapons, helping them transform themselves, not to mention paying attention to the wardrobe items that players can pick up along the way!

⠀⠀⠀

New card images

As we’ve already mentioned, our artists have almost finished working on the events and characters, with only minor tweaks left for endings as well as some cards. Speaking of cards, here they are – new, beautiful, and ready to jump straight into your deck!

⠀⠀⠀

Technical department news

We don't talk about our tech department very often; but that’s only because they dabble in black magic and we’re afraid of them! Just kidding, of course, it's because they’re working on bug fixes and completing the game development. Although it's hard to call it completion, as their work will continue until the release day. But we already have some news for you. Very soon we will finish testing and put together an update which will include updated events and animations. We’ll definitely provide you with a full list of changes in the patch note.

On top of that, the work on the final battle is almost finished too! We’re not going to try to predict whether you'll like it or not; let’s just say that the fight will be truly epic! But we can't spoil it for you, you just have to trust us.

That's it for today! Don't forget to check out our communities and say hello to our team – they always look forward to hearing from you!

See you in the next diary!

KOTCL Developers diaries: working on characters!

Knock-knock, adventurers!

Time flies so fast! Friday sneaked up on us unexpectedly, which means it's time to make another entry in our developer diary.

Today, we’ll take another peek into the animator's studio and see how our heroes are transforming and new characters are emerging for events.

She’s a priestess, she’s grace, she’s ready to amaze

Working on events goes on even after the main backgrounds have been drawn. There are many subplots in our story, and some unexpected person awaits you at every turn. This week, our artists worked on this gorgeous priestess. She’s ended up in one of the events for some reasons, but we won't tell you in which one; you'll have to find her yourself!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How is Vanadis doing?

Just like her allies, our brave adventurer is also getting new clothes for the release. She’s not afraid of swamps and sands; she’s always ready for emergencies, and very soon she’ll be ready for fresh animations too!

Our guys and their animations

While Bjorn's elven form was getting dressed up, the lycan in him was rushing into the animator's studio. He was in such a hurry to get attention that he’s already wheedled out some animations for himself. No animators were harmed in performing this task, we promise!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Meanwhile Persival is having fun with various types of weapons. Let's not disturb him; we all know he’s a heavy hitter!

The final version is at hand, but before that, we plan to release several more updates. Don't forget to follow us on social media and check our Discord for fresh news!

That's it for today. See you in the next diary!

KOTCL Developer Diaries: What We Do in the Shadows

Knock-knock, adventurers!

We’re happy to see you again! We hope your week was as eventful as ours. Grab your backpacks, put on your armor, and let's go!

Pull the lever!

The desert hides so much in its vast sands that we barely had time to look around before finding ourselves in some kind of a dungeon. Of course, as true adventurers, we decided to pull the lever. And while we were pulling it, our artists had already started working on the second lever! Let's not distract them; let’s leave them to sketch this dark dungeon while we move on.

Putting on clothes for the cause

We’re not going to hide it – we still have a lot of work to do besides the cosmetics. For example, the next update is being assembled right now, which will include animated events and fixes for some of the most serious bugs. You always help us a lot in finding and fixing them, and we’re incredibly grateful to you for that.

For now, our programmers are dealing with issues within the game. Meanwhile, the artists and animators that are not involved in the creation of the final cut scenes are polishing our main characters up – adding missing armor, finishing off animations, and sprucing everything up.

This is what character sheets look like when they are sent for animation:

Here Persival is getting ready for another campaign:

And this is what fashion craziness looks like – in this gif we’ve gathered all sorts of clothes for Bjorn (and some extra dance moves!):

⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you see your favorite items among them? Give your answer in the comments!

Special cards – who are they for?

Every item in our game is a puzzle piece. Without them, we wouldn't be able to tell you the whole story. Cards play the biggest role in our game – there are really a lot of them, and we'll let you in on a secret – several very important ones are still in the works! Some of them already have art ready, and we can't wait to add them to the game.

Finally, some important news. You often ask us: “when can we expect the game release?” Unfortunately, production isn’t going as fast as we would like. But we’re doing our best to meet the new deadline.

We will finish work in the 4th quarter of 2023 and definitely release KOTCL. This also means that we’ll update the DLC, so stay tuned for news and updates on our social media!

Don't forget to visit us on Discord and other platforms – there’s a lot of additional fun content there.

See you in the next diary!

Happy Orthodox Easter!

Happy Orthodox Easter to you all!

KOTCL Developer Diaries: Lights, Camera, Action!

Knock-knock, adventurers!

We’re happy to meet you again! There isn't as much news this week as we’d like, but what news we do have is exciting!

So, let's start with the small stuff. Grab your mice, open your decks, and let's get started!

Idol worship in the swamps

Illustration of the events is still in progress; and this time we’ve worked up to this idol in the swamps. It's so creepy! What’s that it’s holding in its hands? Shield your children's eyes from the screen!

No game is complete without cursors

We haven’t overlooked even this tiny detail, and so we’ve created some stunning cursors for you to enjoy.

⠀⠀

But even with such small details, there were some hiccups – some cursors have flocked together right there in the artist's file and have set off to warmer lands!

⠀⠀⠀⠀

Just like in the movies

They say that the denouement of a story is very important. It's what ties everything together, after all. For several months now, we’ve been working on the denouement of our game. Our programmers have been working tirelessly to embed models and mechanics into the final battles, fine-tune the effects, and make sure everything runs smoothly. They’ve even shared some footage with us from the "filming" of the ending – check out Mortis and Persival facing their fate. We won't spoil it with the backgrounds, but you'll soon see everything for yourself in the game!

Well, that's it for today! Don't forget to subscribe to our social networks and feel free to ask any questions you might have about our game – we’re always happy to interact with you.

See you in the next diary!

KOTCL Developer Diaries: swamp wildlife

Knock-knock, adventurers!

It's time for our traditional meet-up. Have you missed us? We had a very busy week - we fixed the bugs you reported, worked a lot on the introduction of new animations and finished new ones.

Before we start, we’d like to remind you that there’s an Easter hunt for Mortis’ spell going on in our social networks - you still have time to participate and get a free copy of Knock On The Coffin Lid!

This is where you can find the spell parts:

Our Twitter: https://twitter.com/RedBoonstudios

Our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS9cNulwJPvziO_CaBFS1Kg

Well, now we're hitting the road again, because we've already heard another knock!

Swamp life forms

You’re already familiar with the mosquitoes; they have extremely unpleasant personalities. But what about toads? Ours turned out to be very cute! This event also features a guest from Asia. Write in the comments if you’ve found the cicada!

Very soon, this event will be passed into the hands of our animators, and the swamps will come to life! For those who want to use our cute toads as their userpics, here they are:

At the crossroads

This crossroads is already fully animated and is on its way to be integrated into the game. Wow, choosing a road at such an intersection is especially unpleasant - the results of turning left or right can be exactly the same. And no one wants to start the journey anew, right?

⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀

It seems that this is the last phase

The goggle-eyed and thrifty Sigismund escaped from our animators again to show off his movements. It's good that we’re very close to locking him up in the castle to wait for your game runs.

⠀⠀
⠀⠀

Some more icon animations

For now, our programmers won’t let us even peek at what they’re doing there in their secret little offices. They only tease us with stories. So we go into their animation files and steal the latest developments, all of this being done to the sound of Sigismund’s evil laughter.

The icon effects are turning out great, and this haughty guy below does a great job as a model for them. We still need a long time to animate the icon effects. We have over a hundred statuses and intentions, so support our animators in the comments with kind words, as they put their all into this work!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

That's it for today! Don’t forget to go to our Discord to communicate with us, read the news in our social networks and pop in to get your next quest!

See you in the next diary!

KOTCL Developer Diaries: are you ready for Easter?

Knock-knock, adventurers!

We’re happy to see you again!

A lot of interesting things happened this week – for example, an update was released where we added a lot of new animations, fixed some events and items, as well as introduced the new karma display and much more. You can read more in this post here:
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1232580/view/6383330087933065264

In honor of Easter

To begin with, let's prepare for the upcoming holidays - Easter is coming, and we’ve prepared a small interactive event for you. In our social networks, Mortis has hidden a spell that will help you defeat Sigismund. He divided it into separate words. If you collect all 9 parts, you will be able to defeat the corrupt monarch and at the same time get a game key!

This is where you can find the spell parts:

Our Twitter: https://twitter.com/RedBoonstudios

Our Discord: https://discord.gg/7vXH5RGbJ2

Our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS9cNulwJPvziO_CaBFS1Kg

First hint is already up on our Youtube channel!

On April 9, we’ll post a document where you can write down the spell and receive your prize in exchange. So here’s the Easter hunt we’ve come up with for you – a hunt with Mortis!

Well, there’s still enough work ahead, although we’re at the final stage of polishing the game and we are busy with something secret too (you’ll like it, we promise!)

Animations, animations, animations

Sigismund and the Cultist continue evolving under the steady hand of our animation department. They both have acquired yet another form and are ready to scare us and take away our health points.

For example, Sigismund has very sharp eyes in his diabolical form. It’s impossible to avoid or hide from him. All one can do is… attack with all their might!

This Cultist lived near water for so long that he grew tentacles. Trypophobes had best not look at him – our artists tried their best while designing him! However, the cannibals among the cultists would definitely sell their souls once again for “seafood cocktail” like him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀

Even little icons need animations!

Our artists haven’t been working hard on the icons for so long in vain, as now they’re almost ready to appear in the game in all their glory. But we'll leave that for future updates, as work on them is in full swing.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Special cards for special madams and sirs

While we were visiting different locations, one of our artists slipped away from us and drew some more card art. What specific cards do you think these pictures are for? Write your guesses in the comments!

⠀⠀⠀⠀

That's it for today. Thank you for staying with us on this long and thrilling journey.

Don't forget about hunting with Mortis, come chat in our social networks, and see you in the next diary!
