Gameplay



  • Added a new ranged weapon, check it out!
  • The Critical Damage of Daggers has been buffed
  • The Throwing Leaves upgrade Prepared (+1 Ammo) has been replaced with a new upgrade called Shocking
  • Reworked Magma Ball’s collision mechanics to fit the new system and make it far more intuitive
  • Dashing covers more distance but has a longer cooldown
  • Koboo slides down walls more slowly
  • Renamed Hawk Slam to Hawk Drop


Controls



  1. Key Rebinding menu!
  2. Controller users can now aim more easily with the right joystick
  3. Added a setting called Strike Cursor to determine whether melee attacks are aimed in the cursor’s direction or where Koboo is facing


Graphics & Sound



  • Replaced bland, artificial white text and borders with a more natural beige-orange to fit the aesthetic
  • Added pretty accents to many boxes and borders to liven them up
  • Generally touched up the upgrade menus, including adding an indication of what weapon was being upgraded
  • Updated the upgrade borders to match the colour changes
  • Added an Ammo display to the GUI to make ranged weapon mechanics more clear
  • Added an aim indicator for controller
  • Reduced general volume slightly
  • Added a pop-up to clearly indicate the end of a level

New Content

  • Added Dual Wielding! Select two weapons instead of one, mix and match to fit your playstyle
  • Added a secret new weapon to select, with its own upgrade paths
  • Reworked Throwing Leaves, they are now slower but have particularly high critical damage
  • Reworked Magma Orb, increasing its skill ceiling but also its potential
  • Reworked the Inferno upgrade to match the change
  • Reworked the Scorch upgrade to be stronger, more satisfying, and more rewarding
  • Reworked the Hawk ability, improving its ease of use and balance while reducing its complexity
  • Buffed Toxicology’s damage
  • Slightly buffed the boss fight
  • Improved “Crit Displacement” for ranged weapons (More accurate critical hits)
  • Generally improved collisions for Koboo’s attacks


Graphics & Audio

  • Changed the dropped Throwing Leaves sprite to make it clearer to the player
  • Updated the UI to match the Dual Wielding mechanic
  • Changed the “Lives” icon to better reflect what they represent
  • Updated the “Tab” menu’s layout to improve usability in the future
  • Added an Upgrade Frame to upgrades in the “Tab” menu
  • Added a unique Sound Effect to the Magma Orb on hit
  • Improved textures for enemies under Status Effects
  • Fixed bugs around too much screen shake under certain circumstances
  • Removed some glitchy textures
  • Fixed some GUI Scrolling glitches


Quality of Life

  • Added a brief “this is a demo” message upon booting up the game
  • Added better Controller support to the main menu
  • Added the visual for the Controller button to continue the opening monologue

Koboo: The Tree Spirit Demo - 0.02 Update


  • Save data from the previous version has been deleted, but this shouldn’t be very detrimental
  • First enemy is significantly slower and more telegraphed
  • Koboo has two extra lives in every stage
  • Koboo’s “fight to stay alive” tutorial tooltip stays up longer before it can be skipped
  • Magma Orb and Throwing Leaves no longer boost Koboo vertically on hit (Though they should still reset triple-jump)
  • Added a sound effect to Throwing Leaves
  • Initial story text has been completely changed
  • Minor rewrites to Mara’s dialogue and smoother animations
  • Audio gain has been reduced
  • Animal Abilities are now cast with “Q” instead of “right-click” on keyboard controls
  • Fixed incorrect icons for Weapon Upgrades in the upgrading menu
  • Animal Abilities on controller are now correctly mapped to “LT”
  • Upgrade and Ability Display Menu is now accessible on controller (“Tab” on keyboard, “Select” on controller)

The Koboo: The Tree Spirit Demo is Here!

It has been 3 years since I started working on Koboo: The Tree Spirit and I finally have a tech demo which I would like to share publicly. This is a short demo and there is still a lot of work I want to hold off on sharing until I feel it is ready. The demo mostly shows off the combat and the general game feel I am going for.

Koboo: The Tree Spirit was featured on Best Indie Games!

I like to keep with all the new roguelike indie games and while I was watching a video about them I saw my own game featured which was awesome as there are so many other greats games on there too which you should check out!

In the video, he thought it looked good which is great but he has also pointed out that the human enemy characters' pixel size does not match the rest of the game in some places. Another person also commented that they look a bit generic and too similar. The reason for this is that the release of this page was a bit rushed so I could post it during the #PitchYaGame event on Twitter so I did not work on the enemy sprites as much as I wanted to.

In the future, I will be polishing and redesigning some parts of the human sprites so they will match the rest of the game, look unique and fit into the narrative of the world. So thanks for the feedback and stay tuned for more updates!
