Fixes and Performance Upgrade

Chapter 3 might not be here yet, but quite a few fixes and performance upgrades had been developed in the meantime. These are important for improving the experience, especially since bugs have occurred for some players that have rendered the game nearly unplayable. With the help of a few players testing the beta branch, I can release these fixes for everyone.

This update isn't without some new content. There are now some props that will display certain items that are placed in them such as books and orbs. There's also a set of new abilities for the higher level characters. There's also a lot of content being developed behind the scenes that won't be ready until Chapter 3 is released, so keep an eye out.

Discoveries and The Iron Era

There are new discoveries to find! Hidden throughout the world are forgotten areas that contain records of what inhabited them. Before, it was enough to recover a tablet or scroll to unlock new crafting recipes, but for some you must uncover clues from these lost places first.

While chapter 3 is still in the works, the full set of iron armor and weapons is out. You'll only find the iron you need under the forest in explore/multiplayer mode, but iron may creep back into existing parts of the world. Recipes to give you more options when cooking food have also been added.

This update integrates the game further with controller support using Steam. If you've had controllers that didn't work quite right before, they may now. Big Picture support has also been added, the game is aware when you use it and lets you do things like reach the Steam controller configuration menu from inside the game.

Multiplayer Area Protection, NPC Roles, and New Abilities

Protecting your items and builds from other players is an essential feature when hosting a public game server, and this update adds a feature to LandTraveller that does just that. If you rest in a bed in an area that hasn't been claimed yet and is far enough away from other players' areas, you can now claim it for yourself. Claiming an area prevents other players from building, destroying, or taking your items. They can still open and close doors and interact with some props. The area is 16x16 blocks in size (spanning up and down), but you can adjust this size for your server in the configuration file.

Story mode chapters will be added only when a complete draft is ready. In the meantime, I've added a new story quest to chapter 1 and gave NPCs roles in explore/multiplayer mode. Once you've advanced to the next era, some NPCs will even buy and sell things with you; that coin indicator at the bottom left of the menu wasn't just for show.

The enemies in chapter 2 can be tough on you, so I gave you eight new abilities to choose from. These are based on what you picked before for combat. You don't need to unlock the next era for them either, so they can help you out if you're having trouble with the first boss.

This game doesn't have complete darkness, but it might still be handy to have your own light source. This update includes a torch you equip in the top slot of your fashion items. It will emit a light in front of you when you have it on.

With a lot of the supporting props, items, abilities, enemies, etc. added, chapter 2 should be coming soon!

Second Early Access Update

The engine has been upgraded to support other translations of the game! In multiplayer, the chat now uses a different system that supports text written in other languages. New translations can be made following the example template in the "trans" folder. A guide on that will come soon.

Another major update is the ability to connect some objects to each other to form mechanisms and traps. I've got a video on this here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvET1k0JMgQ

Of course some of the new content will require you to recover scrolls instead of tablets. In explore (or multiplayer) mode, the map has been extended to the north. Head to the top and you'll see an entrance to the next map. You'll find the scrolls if you dig around in the temple ruins, but look out for some tougher enemies!

The movement speed has been re-balanced so you move faster with higher agility, but weight will burden you more. If you want to keep your speed, you'll have to avoid equipment with weight on it. Equipment to fill in the two empty slots have been added as well.

LandTraveller has been released into Early Access

After many years, LandTraveller has finally made it into Early Access!

This began as an idea back in the summer of 2012 and has been through three prototypes over the years before arriving at this final version. A lot of you had followed along the way, supporting the game with feedback and showing your friends.

Being an Early Access title, this is still just the beginning. Bring your friends along and let's see where the game will take us!
