Big X-mas Mow Down!

A new game mode for Christmas!



I could not resist making yet another mode for X-mas. I just took the original Big X-Mas Chow Down mode and replaced "Ch" of the Chow with a "M" as a result the Big X-Mas Mow Down mode was born.

Well, it wasn't quite that easy. That new mode doesn't feature any of the extreme turkey munching nor the candy canes crunching. Instead there are lots of other rider on the winter wonderland roads. They are trying to deliver presents all over the kingdom. But as you might guessed in this kingdom nothing really ever gets delivered for rather obvious reasons. So don't feel bad about ramming them and snatching their presents! Most include giant snowballs that you can then throw at the next rider. Why are there snowballs in the presents? Because some people must have realized that their presents won't get anywhere anyway so they filled them with cheap snow instead.
But you can also find power ups, hats and some magic mutation for yourself and horse in those presents. You also still have to mow down those randomly generated snowmen of course as well as the horned bucket heads but those giant snow balls make it all a good bit easier.

Update #9 - Traders Alive, Competitors Dead and Free Games

Here we go with update #9 which marks version 1.9!

You probably wondered by now why Halloween never seems to end in Last Knight. Wonder no more! It is now Christmas and Santa made your deepest wish come true. What wish that is? To put all those competitor rider to waste.

Competitor Rider


Well, not all of them, some get wasted in the brand new taverns while some others are still out there roaming the kingdom and getting wasted. But they finally respect you now and will not try to get into your way anymore even if that means their painful death. You could say they respect you more then their own live.

Those other rider also represent now all those houses in the game. Like the house of the dancing fox, of the mad unicorn, of the roasted turkeys etc. They wear the flag of their house proudly (till they die around the next corner) and there are also rogue rider that represent their own generated family (and their rather short legacy). When you crafted the castle yet you will see also rider of your own house but you can just ram them in the side anyways, because it is just too tempting to not do!

Tavern



(Nobody is under the influence of alcohol here)

The addition of the tavern acts as the go to place to hear all the drivel. There you can listen to the tales of the wonders of the world. But luckily you don't have to sit through all that boring slipslop and only get the important bits which is in which direction a particular wonder is located. There is a side-effect to the addition of the tavern though, other riders have been seen riding dizzy on their horses while others are simple sleeping while riding and some have even forgot to put on their armors! That can not end well. (As if it ever would)
Note: There is 0% alcohol included in this game. Non, zero, nada! It is all just apple juice in those barrels.
Oh, those randomly generated other rider now also wear randomly generated hats sometimes.

Traders with faces


You probably also wondered why you could only see the dark silhouette of the traders. Fear not, they are not some dark evil demons that hide in the shadows! They are human beings just like you and me, well, for a big part.

Isn't it a dream team? Well, one is getting out of line but that has to do. He just got too much magic in him!

The traders are not shy to comment on the hats you wear. You better take their fashion tips seriously because the right hat can help immensely with trying to survive, because magic!

Extra cameras


The extra alternative cameras have been tweaked quite a lot and you can now choose favorites with the number keys from 0-9. There are default favorites which are basically my favorites but you can make them your own by choosing a camera with the mousewheel or in case of the gamepad with the d-pad up and down buttons. To then save a selected camera on a number simply press left control + the number key you want to save it on. You can then also automatically randomize between the favorites by choosing camera 0. (If you have problems with your mousewheel or d-pad you can also lock camera switching by pressing numpad 5) Don't forget, in first person you can instead zoom in and out.

"Shotmephrenia" A FPS in which you have to shoot no one but yourself! Make perfect trickshots, figure out how to reflect the bullet over multiple panels and run and jump to catch your bullet! Created for the 7DFPS game jam.

"Nowhere" A very small but deeep artgame that messes with your head. Created for the Ludum Dare 31 gam jam.

Update #8 - Halloween, Competitors, 37 New Cameras and Dancing!

The Halloween update is now live! A bit late but still not too late.

Halloween


You will now find lots of pumpkin hats as well as enemies with pumpkin hats. The drop rate of all hats in Endless Journey is greatly increased over the span of the event. It will probably last some days into the next week. Because it is Last Knight's last night's Halloween event! Or last week's or something!

Competitors


Brand new are competitor rider that roam the world like you do. But have no fear, they are not the smartest, nor the strongest, nor the fastest, nor the bravest. So they probably die sooner then you do. They will also grab coins though, so you might want to get rid of them with a friendly joust in their back. Alternatively you can just ram them in the sides like you would do in the game Burnout (Just with horses instead of cars and ragdoll goodness)

Don't ram them in the back though because that will result in a Smash-Up! Those riders are slower then you so you will automatically catch up to them but you can also accelerate that by bunny hopping. Get them before they die! Poor bbbbbaaaaaaaaaa sssssssssssss ketballs.

There are also scary skeleton riders which are not even a tad more intelligent. But they have at least the excuse that their brain is already rotten!
Also pretty brainless are the ghosts, yes ghosts! But don't be afraid they are as fast as the wind and with it quickly gone.

New Cameras


Not 1, not 2, not 3, 37 new cameras are now in the game! They cover all kinds of views while a lot of them are not very practical yet really cool to watch! There are also just FOV variations and the first person FOV can now be changed by simply using the mousewheel. Here are some of them:

You can simply change the 3rd Person Camera with the mouse wheel while playing. There is also a randomization on slot 0, it changes the camera randomly every few seconds which makes it very cinematic but also really crazy. You can see the number on the top left when you use the mouse wheel. Most of them are pretty experimental and there can be clipping and cameras just going through obstacles.

Dancing


Yes, you can now dance in Last Knight! I discovered dancing by accident while making the Rogue Rider Tutorial images. I just implemented somethings that let me force a ragdoll to different sides with pressing keys to get this images:

As it turns out it looks like dancing (Not the best dancing but pretty good from my point of view)
You can now dance after every region passed in the Rogue Rider Adventure mode and when you die there and when you found a Wonder of the World. You can also dance as many times as you want then in the trophies screen to celebrate your "flawless" victories!

Hats buy and transform


No, not with real money! Who buys unreal hats with real money? Anyway, you can now buy a random hat with lots of gold and alternatively randomly transform a existing one. (Let the same hat type generate new)
But you only get those options in the customize screen after you purchased the new castle with lots of gold. This is for Endless Journey only.

Rogue Rider Adventure Tutorial


As mentioned before there is now a little tutorial for the Rogue Rider Adventure mode which gives you the basics you need to know. The inventory has been also made more clear.
You can see the tutorial also in the loading screen when clicking and you also see now stats flying in while the world gets generated.

Performance


I made some discoveries performance wise, especially over time the performance is now significantly better.

Rogue Rider Adventure Preview Video


As you might noticed or not noticed there has not been much press about the release of Last Knight: Rogue Rider Edition but there have been Youtube videos. Here is a great entertaining one about the Rogue Rider Adventure mode by MetalCanyon:

As also mentioned there the food has been not made clear in the game which let to the confusion of explosive food, poisoned food and even radioactive food. But the most important bit is that the food only shows up as red bllinking when you are too fat to eat it. If you know Monthy Python you probably also know that too much eating results in explosion of the body.

For the next update I will include some info about that as well as the inventory slots. Also, if you have questions don't be afraid to ask in the forum. In Last Knight there are quite a lot of things different then in other games.

Gamers Got Hearts


The Gamers Got Hearts event which donates all received money to the Save the Children charity is currently going on. I also donated Last Knight keys to it. For every donation you make you get a game and the amount gets amplified by 6 and all send to Save the Children. Next Update


Apart of the already mentioned more info for the Rogue Rider Adventure mode I will also add something that lets you later on buy hats or transform existing hats with lots of gold in Endless Journey. That idea has been already mentioned several times in the forum, then you have something to do with all your gold after you have bought all the power ups, upgrades, characters, safety rope, insurance and the castle. But don't worry it will always be gold that you find in the game which lets you then buy hats, never something like "Secret of the Magic Crystals - Dress Up" DLC

Full Game Release!

Last Knight: Rogue Rider Edition is now finally released as the full game! It is now over a year ago that the standard edition launched and a lot has been added, improved and tweaked since then. It now has become this big package which includes 3 full-fledged game modes. Each of them has a lot to offer while they all stay true to the fun arcade-ish experience.

For those who don't know: Last Knight is jousting action, platforming, and the very important: avoiding painful crashes! It twists it with rogue-like elements, arcade-ish endless fun and more traditional like story levels.

But enough of the talk, here is now the promised Launch Trailer:

I hope you like what you see because you get to see it now also as the intro of the game. It should give a rather quick impression of the dangerous and big fantasy world that lies in front of you. It utilizes the same cool looking low poly stylization that also the ingame 3d map is made with. Honestly, it is also because I don't have tons of cash lying around to blow on a CGI trailer. :)

The music is made by Edouard Brenneisen who also made some great new gameplay music as well as nice less up-tempo music for the 3D map and inventory.

Also new in Update 7 are the wonders of the world which are of course 7. Because all good things are 7 which also includes 77, like the 77 achievements the game now has!

The rogue rider mode is already really hardcore with just trying to survive, so don't get your hopes up of accidentally stumbling upon a wonder of the world. Also, stumbling gets you killed!
There is randomization to it but there will be always all 7 distributed over all the directions in the distance. When you should find one and get to it, it will be added to your trophy room along with the achievement. You can then collect all 7 over the course of multiple games. I'm pretty sure getting all in one game would be not humanly possible.
The first person view and bird's eye view are now also added to the rogue rider mode. Getting a wonder of the world unlocks a view mode here.

The full game release doesn't mean that I will abandon the game but it means that I have now finished the Rogue Rider Adventure mode and with it made the game a complete package that hopefully a lot of people will enjoy. On that note, if you know someone who is into jousting action or better just into fun games spread the word! :)

The previously missing German, French and Polish localizations are now of course also included for the Rogue Rider mode.

Full Game release on October the 3rd!

Last Knight: Rogue Rider Edition will finally make the transition from Early Access to the Full Release on October the 3rd which is already this Friday!

If you are playing Last Knight already since its Standard Edition release you might know that it is already more then a year since the launch of it. It was the 10th September of 2013! After that release quite a lot things have been added and then came the transition to the Rogue Rider Edition and with it the Early Access launch on Steam that introduced the new Rogue Rider Adventure mode. I have then added more and more features to it and it got to something pretty big that combines the arcade-ish platforming and jousting gameplay with RPG elements and the hardcore mechanics of rogue-like games. Which includes the randomly generated world where you can choose your own way and the merciless mechanic where everything is lost when you die.

With the release, Update 7 will also get live. It will include the last missing piece of the Rogue Rider Adventure mode and with it make all 3 game modes complete. The big addition are Wonders of the World (as actual places) which you can then find and collect all 7 over the course of multiple games. It will be of course very hard to get to them where the mode is already really hard.

Update 7 will also include new music by Edouard Brenneisen, there will be much more interesting gameplay music that also comes with musical sounds which merge with the actual track. Also new is the music for the 3D Map and Inventory.

The release will of course also include the missing localizations for the Rogue Rider Adventure mode.

Releasing the game on the 3rd doesn't mean that I will stop development but instead that it has reached the state where it has all the features that I planned. Also, there can never be enough hats. :)

Update #6 - Gazillion Magic Hats, Armors and Villages +Cloud saving and new achievements

Update #6 is finally released and with it a lot of new things for the Rogue Rider Adventure mode!

Armors


First of all there are now different armors while scratches make damage to them which can ultimately destroy your armor. But to be clear here: when you ride straight into a wooden fence a armor will do nothing to keep you from getting wasted! When your armor is destroyed you will also die when you just scratch a obstacle which is referred to as Wrecked. It is a cruel world.

Here the armor is destroyed and you can see your knights randomly generated underpants.

You always start off with, well, a rather crappy armor but luckily you get the first upgrade for free.

Villages


When you make it to a village you can spend all your hard earned gold in the shops. You will find all the traders there with the blacksmith being the new one. There you can get a better armor as well as repair your armor. But the best thing about villages is that you can hire a squire there! When you die, which you will sooner then later, you can continue as your squire back in the village where you hired him. Everything in your inventory will be of course lost but at least the gold you will be able to get back.

You can also visit the grave of your former self and mourn or just see which fashionable hat you/he wore there.

Gazillion Magic Hats


You can now find randomly generated hats in the Rogue Rider Adventure mode. Some of them have magic properties and some are even legendary and have special magic properties! You only have to find them in the presents scattered around in the world:

Some of them give you extra armor while others improve your horse digestion skill. Others give you the ability to eat much more then humanly possible or increase you strafing speed. They can also increase the intelligence which obviously is useless since you the player packs all the intelligence. You could also find a legendary hat that is tasty for spiders, so the spider will you eat your hat and then don't hug you to death. Other special properties can for instance heavily alter your vision. The hats are not only hats but also masks, wigs, helmet decoration and hairy thingies. It is also possible that a fedora gets generated but you don't have to wear it!

Some of the hats I found. They are generated in types, shapes, distortion, colors, magic properties and names. The generation currently pulls from more then 200 split names while 50 of them have been provided by you and more will be added.

Alternative 3rd person camera


As requested by several people there is now alternative 3rd person camera that you can choose to use. It is slightly lower positioned and less angled. There is now also light ray thingy that helps with aiming. It is rendered in front which makes it particular helpful with the new camera and when hats are obstructing your view on the lance. You can find the settings for both in the new "camera/screen/fx" screen which is located in the options.

Boulders and Mine Bombs


The blacksmith also offers you Indiana Jones like giant rounded rocks that you can throw at your foes as well as devastating Mine Bombs.

A bat is getting to know that new boulder here.

- You can throw them with E or in the case of a gamepad with Y
- Joust them to speed them up
- Jump to make the boulder/bomb hop over obstacles
- Put you lance down to slow the boulder/bomb down
- Mine bombs explode on heavy impact and alternatively by pressing throw again

Cloud saving


Your game gets now also saved in the cloud, for that the system settings are now in a different location and you will have to set them again.

I'm saving this head in the clouds.

Almost forgot, when you die the hat that your wear gets not saved in the cloud and instead it is forever lost so you better bring that hat safely to end of the area. You can have a maximum of 9 Rogue Rider Adventure hats that get saved.

Beta of Update #6 - Magic Hats, Armors and Villages [UPDATE September 20]

There is now a new beta of the new update!

To download the beta simply go in Library > right click Last Knight > Properties > Betas Tab > select "Beta-new". You can then also go back out of it there as you like.

It is mostly just fixes but I also added a lance light ray thingy that helps with aiming. Particular useful with the new alternative camera and when you wear hats since it renders in front. It is default on but you also can set if off in the options.

[Initial News]

Don't be scared by your system settings missing, you will have to setup those again since they are now saved in a different location in preparation for the cloud saving. Your actual game save is not touched. I can't make the change to cloud saving only for the beta build so I will set it on when the new update is finished.

Also important is the new alternative 3rd person camera which is bit lower positioned and with a bit lower angle. I know several people wanted something like this. It has it advantages and disadvantages but should be balanced. The fog is the same as for the standard camera except that it is a bit more for the road theme to prevent notice able popping in.

There are now mine bombs and Indiana Jones like rolling boulders that you can use to smash things. Just joust them to speed them up and you can also make them hop over obstacles by simply jumping yourself.

Also missing in the preview are the 3 new added hat types. (for Endless and RRA)

The new hats you can now find in the Rogue Rider Adventure mode are a bit more frequent for the beta so it is easier to check out all those magic properties. Also let me know if you see any typos or anything in the names. There are now more then 200 names with them being also split and differently combined, 50 of these have been provided by you through the forum! There can still be much more names so if you have ideas just post them.

Preview of Update #6 - Magic Hats, Armors and Villages

Since it has been some time since the last update here is a short summary on what I have been up to:

The next update will include gear for the Rogue Rider Adventure mode. You will then start off as a poorly equipped guy (who can hardly be called a knight) and then can get better full body armor. Scratches will then make damage to your armor which then will ultimately destroy it. When you have no armor left, scratches will already kill you. Colliding with something will instantly kill you as usual but there are several special abilities the higher armors have:

The shininess of the armors will quickly fade and the will look beaten up but luckily you will be able to repair them as well.

Also new are villages were you can get all kinds off stuff and for the first time you will be able to hire a squire. After you died you can then choose to continue your legacy in the boots of your squire but you will then start off in the village you hired him and everything in your old inventory is of course lost. But at least the gold you will be able to get back.

In the villages you can find all the shops/traders with the new blacksmith and additionally the recruitment place.

Also new are the randomly generated hats for the rogue rider adventure mode but there is something different: they can be magical! That means they can have magic properties and there will be even randomly generated legendary hats with extra special properties. I still need lots of names for those hats: I created a thread where you can give me your ideas:

The hats you find will be saved for all times but when you die the hat that you wore will be lost forever.

Update #5 - Inventory, Traders and Food!

Update 5 is finally done and it packs a lot of new stuff! Most importantly you have now a inventory in the rogue rider mode where you can manage your stuff that you can get now through the added traders as well as find in the treasures. Another important addition is food which some might suggest as the most important because without food you will of course die, while you obviously also die through too much food. In that case you will of course explode. Also new is a cinematic camera view for jousting, dieing and when you should make it somewhere without dieing. Before I get more into details here is a update video that gives you a quick look at the new stuff:

Inventory:
The inventory is now always there for you to open when you are at the world map. Just click esc or B in the case of a gamepad. In it you can manage your bought or found power ups, choose a meal to carry on the back of your horse as track food or eat a meal immediately. Important here is to keep track on the fat stats. You don't want to kill yourself in the inventory by eating too much. That would be really embarrassing!

Sometimes there is just a giant burger in a treasure but that is not to say that a giant burger is cheap (it is worth more then 10k). There is still some space in the inventory for more stuff that can be added in the future.

Traders:
On the map you will now see trader symbols above the area tiles, those show you the type of trader/shop you will encounter when you manage to complete that area. For now there are 3 types: Power Ups, Food and Diamonds. They have 3 random items to offer that can also have random discounts or higher prices. In case of the diamonds trader it is just for selling your found diamonds because obviously you can not eat diamonds and despite a nice look they are useless when not exchanged for precious gold. You can also find treasures which contain a random item, gold or diamonds. Generally they are really worth it to go for.

You can now also zoom in the map.

Food:
You will starve fairly quickly now but luckily there is a lot of food to be found. You will find the most food in the easy areas while harder areas can have no food at all scattered around. But you can also buy food of traders that you can carry with you. One of it you can then carry on the back of your horse as a emergency snack when you are about to starve to death. Make sure to always keep an eye on the fat stats of your horse and knight in the inventory. You can also see how fat your characters are just by looking at their appearance. Keep in mind that all the meat is for the knight while that other stuff is for the horse. The different food adds also different amount of fat. The giant burger for instance adds 6 fat while a steak only 1 fat. While playing you will see that food, that would add too much fat, blinks red. Eat responsibly and Bon appétit!

Cinematic Views:
The cinematic views show you your success and of course your many failures from an all new angle. When jousting successfully the cinematic view will only happen when there is enough space, so when there is no obstacle or a gap that could bring a sudden end to your victory celebration. It also quickly fades out when you strafe or jump. If you should not like it you can also turn it off in the advanced options. When dieing it will just happen when the body of your rider will fly far enough so you can see it flying in all its devastating glory. Lastly don't be scared when the horse looks determined in the camera that is just his thing. :)

Everyone is happy here, packed with a giant burger and using the unicorn rainbow bridges power up. Later they fell and then drowned. So sad.

Achievements:
There are 12 new achievements, they involve Hitler, Kim Jong-un and Santa Claus. Well, I think you will figure it all out way too fast anyway.

Other stuff:
- Added a intro! But it is only a first short version.
- The ghost rider power up has now been nerfed a little because it is so powerful. Now you slowly sink though the ground and when sunken too much you are gone but you can prevent that from happening simply by jumping to get up again.
- The second sight power up has now been changed quite a lot, it only activates when you are already very close to a obstacle but then the slowmo is slower and the strafing faster. That makes it more clear and less interrupting.
- The cannon power up now shows the size of the cannonball through the cannon getting fatter and everything close in front will be destroyed immediately when shooting.
- A very important fix is the shield power up death bug. When using a shield while a thunderbolt is hitting the ground somewhere it had always killed you. The metal of the shield and the electricity... no wait, I did not simulate that. It is fixed! :)
- Hat are now much easier to find but that is not to say that they are easy to find.
