Q&A with the Devs behind Lempo!

Hello Lempo's Lost Souls,

It's been some time since Lempo released. We hope that it didn't catch you yet and you were somehow able to escape the forest afterall.

If you were stuck somewhere along the first two levels, then here is our token of gratitude!
-> Click here to find out more!

Moving on to the next question or shall we say questions! Yes, we collected some frequently asked questions from the community and we present you the answers to them all in one place.

Here are the TOP 10 chosen ones!

Question #01:What was the hardest thing about making this game?

The hardest thing was getting the story together since we had sooooo many awesome ideas. We had to drop a lot of them but we believe the end result came up just as it should!

Question #02:Will you allow players to make mods?

For now, official mod support isn't included in our upcoming plans.

Question #03:Who is your favorite character in Lempo?

KOUKO!

Question #04:How much time did you work on Lempo?

Lempo started as a hobby project in June 2020. Full-time production kicked off the first day of 2022. So in total it was about a 3 year project.

Question #05:Did you use assets from marketplace(excluding horror engine)? The game feels very original.

Yes. But most of the meshes were made by us. You can see the asset names in the end credits. Since most of the project was done with a team of three and our vision of the game was from the beginning quite ambitious, it was crucial to use also some assets.

Question #06:What was the initial spark to make Lempo; is it something you've been ruminating on for a while before making it?

The initial spark was a simple phone call: "Hi. Would you like to do a video game with me?" Honestly, that's how Lempo was born. Though at that time it was "just" a puzzle game - the Finnish mythology and horror elements joined the ride after the project had already started.

Question #07:It could be said that video games as an art form operate mostly in the realm of realism (much like film and TV), even if the subject matter includes elements of fantasy, often mechanics and general interactions will follow rules of realism or logic. Do you think this is important for structuring games, and do you feel that Lempo could be considered abstract in any way?

Throw away the rules. Keep them if you like. In Lempo we did both, so yes: it has also abstract elements. It really depends on the game but we for sure love abstract thingies in games!

Question #08:How is the accessibility for different controllers? Like if someone has custom native controllers because they do not have full control of their hands/fingers?

While this is a thing we’d love to include, we had a small team and had to prioritize quite a lot. At the moment, we only have basic controller support built in game. That said, many controllers might have their own software and could work perfectly fine.

Question #09:Is it there an option to increase the size of the subtitles? It looks pretty small in the screenshots.

Unfortunately at the moment the text size is not customizable. We’ll see if there is a possibility to add this in a future update.

Question #10:Aside from the obvious (Finnish mythology, getting lost in the woods) what were big non-game inspirations for Lempo if any? What games were inspirational?

Big non-game inspirations: Twin Peaks, Grimms' Fairy Tales, real life stories of people who have disappeared, Blair Witch Project, old Finnish music.
Games: Myst, Dark Souls, The Room, Alan Wake, Silent Hill, Abe’s Oddysee

Lempo - Patch Note 1.0.1

Major fix:
We think we have found out the reason why saving the game in the first level would prevent the game from starting for a small number of players. This issue should be fixed in this patch, but please don't hesitate to contact us either through Steam discussions or our official Discord if you still encounter crashes relating to this. As it only happened on some machines, it was difficult to test reliably.

Thank you for your patience.

Other fixes:
- Maze guard should spawn correctly after player dies in the room it's in
- Maze guard music should not start if the guard is not present
- Fixed a couple of places players could get stuck (between meshes etc.)
- Added a small light to guide players out of the maze better
- Modified the textures of a certain letter to better indicate there might be something more to it
- Fixed an issue where Get to the Church objective could reactivate
- Added a few blocking volumes to prevent OOB
- Tweaked the frequency of some hints
- Glowing crystal screen effect now a bit more visible

Also I'd like to take this chance to THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. It has been so great watching all of your streams and videos and reading all the messages.

Let's go Lempo! But HOW?

🌲🕯️Thank you for playing Lempo!🕯️🌲

If you have been frustated, it's totally on purpose.😉We want you to immerse yourself in the world of Lempo and figure out the puzzles yourselves to fully embrace the game and its charm.

But in case you don't know where to go first and truly get lost enough that it blocks your gameplay. Be sure to toggle the hints in the settings.🌟

And even after all this if you're still stuck, here are some general gameplay hints in the correct order of directions to follow as we do want you all to play the game and not give up completely or worse rage-quit. That's not the point now, is it?😌

Starting from the very beginning, Level 1 & Level 2, there you go. Enjoy!

🎮Level 1🎮

The Beginning

1: Best to just follow the light!

The Cabin

1: There is a note on the cabin wall next to the lock box. That is all you need to get inside.
2: In the cabin, remember to read all the notes and search carefully!
3. There is a stone door near the cabin pond. You need to find two missing things to open it. Return to the door when you have found them from elsewhere!

The Shell

1: First you need to get to the top! Figure out a right combination of switches to raise the right platforms.
2: Be sure to visit the cabin before venturing down into the Shell.
3: The code to the door must be written somewhere.
4: The blast doesn't seem to get through the shiny glass panels.
5: There is a way to stop the cube from blasting. Everything you need is in the Shell.
6: And then you need to get the cube open somehow! Did you find something from the Shell that could help?

Sailor's Ledge

1: Remember to search carefully!
2: Sailor has been investigating a weird stone. Probably the one next to the save lantern.
3: Sailor has recorded some very important information somewhere, but it doesn't seem to be on his papers.
4: Have you found the music box?
5: All the sides of the stone matter.
6: The thing on the front of the stone with some letters seems like a grid. With rows and columns.

🎮Level 2🎮

Graveyard of Trees

1: There is a soul in a prison near the three eye statues. You should probably try to free it.
2: There are three wheels and three eye statues, but one wheel seems to be broken. Need to find another way to take care of that one. Maybe check your surroundings for something you can use.
3: After freeing the soul you have a better chance of crossing the swamp. Just take your time.

Grandfather's Cave

1: Be sure to search through everything. There are quite a few papers and other things.
2: The water seems to have healing properties!

The Bunker

1: Well obviously you need to find a way in! Shouldn't be too far away.
2: And as usual, the door is locked. The key is somewhere nearby, I'm sure.
3: Inside there is a locked door with a keypad. Is something humming when you are near it?

Iron Bridge

1: Yet another key required to enter. I'd look at the bunker before using more time on this.
2: I think Grandfather had something that could be useful here. Some missing part or something.
3: There are instructions on the wall. It's a specific sequence you need to input with the switches. If something goes wrong, maybe the smaller paper on the wall near the door can help.

Please DO NOT SPOIL the game for others, use the hints if you need them. If you need even more help or want to elaborate on them or help others, our discord is the best place to go as other players and the devs are there, if you're really stuck at something very specific.

Stay tuned for other levels, we decided to tackle Level 1 & Level 2 first, as we assume that most people must have played until this point. Rest to come later.

Do not give up Paul, you can make it out.
Just stay there and wait for help (not).
