LOVE 3 is just one of the awesome games being done quickly at this year's Awesome Games Done Quick!
Games Done Quick is a fundraising organization that showcases the world's greatest speedrunners to raise awareness and money for various charities. Two of their more popular events, Awesome Games Done Quick during the winter, and Summer Games Done Quick, during the summer, bring together said speedrunners to broadcast games from an array of genres and generations. This January's event benefits the Prevent Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to empower "people to stay ahead of cancer through prevention and early detection." The live stream will broadcast on Twitch from January 8th-15th.
LOVE 3 will appear on AGDQ 2023 during the morning on Saturday, January 14th, EST! The run will be set as a 3-person Any% race, featuring @_charbunny, @PaulisterSR, and @Heponwana. Additionally, a donation incentive for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, if met, will allow viewers to see runners race on a BRAND NEW level made specifically for this event, which will be available afterward at http://LOVE3Custom.com.
We are honored that LOVE 3 is part of AGDQ 2023 and such a fantastic cause!
See you in the chat!
LOVE 3 - Now with Custom Level Support!
I'm so excited to share that LOVE 3 now has full support for custom levels! Now you can create your own levels using any mechanics from any previous level from any previous LOVE game, and I'm working on adding additional customizable objects to challenge players.
You can find levels to download or upload your own by visiting mod.io/g/love3! Downloading levels is pretty easy and straightforward:
The process for making them is still pretty obtuse, and I'm working on making it easier to use, but the process is this: Go to the directory that you installed LOVE 3 in, and find the "custom" folder. In there there are a couple of sample stages that you can poke apart to see how they're made. You can create your own sprite strips and define them by creating a config.json file, which will have the information for where objects are created in the stage. The only tools you need are your favorite image editor, your favorite text editor, and some patience for some trial and error.
I'm still working on the wiki, but some additional information and documentation for editing mode and a list of every object in the game to pull from, check out mokuzai.studio/love3custom. If you want help making your stage, please come hang out in the Mokuzai Studio Discord, where we'll be happy to help.
I want to specifically thank and credit two folks who helped make this happen:
• Nikita Krapivin: Nik wrote the script that reads the json files and populates the stage. I literally couldn't have done any of this without that.
• James Begg: James wrote a fantastic and simple script that enforces the 3 color rule of LOVE's visual style by replacing the color of every object with the stage color that the player chooses. Now you don't get a mishmash of weird colors when you choose a smasher from kuso and the turrets from LOVE 3.
Also many thanks to the folks at mod.io for hosting everyone's levels for free as a cross platform solution. <3
Endless LOVE and Deck Verified
Hey all, Fred Wood here. I'm excited to share LOVE 3 v1.2.6, which adds a few very cool things.
1) Steam Deck Verified: Valve has tested the game on the Steam Deck and set up the proper branch, so now you can simply click install to get the game up and running on your Steam Deck!
2) Endless Mode: Added to the main menu, ENDLESS LOVE will let you play infinite levels in a seamless randomized order. Choose Arcade Mode before ENDLESS LOVE, and see how many levels you can beat with 100 lives! You might even see a couple of levels you didn't expect in there.
3) Bug Fixes: There were a couple of rare issues that could pop up in a couple of levels, and those have been squashed.
And a fun secret for the folks who read these changelogs: 4) When starting the game, on Keyboard hold Shift+M or on controller hold Select to start the game in Mirror Mode, to throw off all of your muscle memory.
LOVE 3 on your Steam Deck!
Hello, and thank you for playing LOVE 3! As I have made a native Linux port of the game for an older version of Linux, it is not properly supported by the Steam Deck, but thankfully with Windows version runs perfectly! I've spoken with folks at Valve who have assured me that this will eventually be something I can set in the backend, but for folks with a Steam Deck who want to play the game now, here you go!
First, find LOVE 3 in your Steam Library on your Steam Deck, and press the Options Button, as illustrated at the bottom of the screen.
Second, find the "Properties..." option, and press A.
Finally, on the left side of the screen, select the "Compatibility" option, set "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool", and select "Proton Experimental".
This will download the Windows build of the game, and you'll be good to go. Launch it like you would any other game on your Steam Deck!
If you've enjoyed your time with LOVE 3 on or off the Steam Deck, it'd be a huge help if you'd leave a review of the game! This will tell Steam to share the game with folks who might also like it. One review can go a long way to a game's success, so I hope you'll take a moment and do that.
Thanks so much for your support, and I hope you enjoy!
LOVE 3 - 1.2.0
Edit: Changed 1.0.6 to 1.2.0. That's right, patch notes for the patch notes.
I'm happy to share LOVE 3 v1.0.6 v1.2.0, with an extra special blast from the past.
New Feature: • <3: A new* 20 level** set, recreating the original version of LOVE (called <3) released on message boards in 2007. These levels include the original music, and help show how far I've come as a designer -- which is to say they're not great. But as an archive piece, it's neat to have, and it has its own YOLO medal and Speedrun mode! You can access <3 from the main menu like any other level set.
Ah yes, the original Level 1. You might find that it's a little easier thanks to the higher jump height.
Some levels start you off in unfortunate positions.
Switches date all the way back to 2007!
The original LOVE had a viewspace of 128x128, so maze levels like this needed something to keep them from being too easy.
Good lord, what was I thinking?
Bug Fixes • LOVE 3 Level 1: Fixed an issue where the player could set a checkpoint on the moving platforms. • LOVE 3 Level 9: Fixed an issue where the player could set a checkpoint on the moving pillar. • fastkill error: Fixed an issue where the game would crash if your settings file didn't have a custom entry for fastkill and setdeathanim
v1.2.0 Changes • Title Screen now actually displays a title (and a version number!) • Players no longer have to complete LOVE 3 to play LOVE 1 and LOVE 2. Now new players can decide to play LOVE 1+2+3 all at once at the start. • Version number bumped to v1.2.0 to be in line with other platforms.
Thank you for your support, as well as your patience. If you'd like to get in touch with me directly or provide feedback, the absolute best place to do that is our official Discord. Thanks again!
* Not new, actually very old ** 19 Levels and 1 that's basically hold left *** There's not really more, unless you count Steam Leaderboard support for <3
LOVE 3 - 1.0.5
Hey folks, I've taken a crack at some of the small remaining bugs, including a fix to one that resulted from another fix that was done slightly carelessly. Also a reminder for folks who didn't read the previous patch notes:
• General Change: For those paying attention to these changelogs, press "CTRL+SHIFT+L" or all four shoulder buttons at the title screen for a work in progress.
Bug Fixes • Checkpoint Change: Every once in a while, the player will squish through a pixel or two of the floor. If the player sticks their checkpoint there, it will get stuck there and cause unintended consequences. Now if the checkpoint is found to be under the ground, it tries to push it up four pixels. If it's stuck further than four pixels down, the checkpoint gets reset. This should not cause any issues with any casual play, and will keep cheaters from being able to absolutely ruin the leaderboards with exploits.
• Added an asterisk of shame for folks who don't complete a YOLO run without saving and continuing. There's no other punishment for it, just a little asterisk next to your run results to show that you had to save and continue. It's okay though, I can't do it either.
• LOVE 3 Level 2 / 25: Changed the sound that plays when operating the mover, which solves a previous
• LOVE 3 Level 4: Fixed a newly introduced bug which was messing up 100% runs
• LOVE 3 Level 7: Fixed an issue where pausing/unpausing would change the depth on the secret platforms.
• LOVE 2: kuso Level 3: Fixed a bug where decorative fans would disappear after pausing and unpausing.
• <3 Level 3: Occasionally you could be going so fast that you would die while finishing the level, but this has been fixed.
• <3 Level 8: Occasionally you could be going so fast that you would die while finishing the level, but this has been fixed.
• Software Change: Previously I've been building the game using Game Maker Studio 2's YoYo Compiler (YYC). For this build, we're using VM, which may improve performance for some players.
