Mad Chess Beta 0.84 - Chaos random faction -

1 big feature added in this patch (for beta testers):

New Big Feature


  • Chaos random faction: Unlock the chaos option in the shop as an alternate random faction: (a) each unit is randomized from any of the 17 factions, (b) the initial positions of the knights, bishops and queen are randomized, (c) 3 terrain objects are randomly spawned in the 2 ranks in front of the chaos army, (d) some additional rules are applied to the secret king, Kraken and Hydra to have enough units to activate their potential.


Other Updates


  • New terrain object: the Vault (can only be captured by pawn-type units) (the vault will show up in chaos mode)
  • New in-game ability icons for +15 units (kept the animations for kings, vampires, aliens and goblin queen only).
  • Dragons are now out of the initial selection for new players in versus mode and added in the shop (since Goblins are unlocked after mission 2 in adventure).


Balance Update


  • Tengu: buff to the Crow (orthogonal passive leaps), buff to the Dojo (new counter ability with passive knight leaps)
  • Mermaids: buff to the Shell (creates 4 water squares instead of 3)
  • Yetis: adventure nerf to Tusk (ability only works up to range 4)
  • Angels: Nerf to Shield from surround (3) cannot be captured by pawns to surround (4) cannot capture or be captured by pawns
  • Scarabs: Nerf to Rhino from surround (4) give surround (2) to King to surround (3) give surround (3) to King
  • Nagas: Nerf to Empress (front pawn gets surround (1) instead of surround (2) )
  • Aliens: Nerf to Scout (cannot mimic enemy kings anymore)
  • Goblins: Nerf to queen (surround (3) instead of (4) ), nerf to Rook (orthogonal (3) / surround (3) for king capture instead of orthogonal (4) / surround 4 for king capture)

Mad Chess Beta 0.83 - Goblins & Arcade mode -

3 big features are added in this patch (for beta testers):

New Big Features


  • Goblins are added to the game as the 17th faction ! (Assassins with special abilities against the enemy king)
  • Arcade mode added to Adventure (unlock reserve units and create your slightly customizable army to tackle the adventure levels)
  • Analysis mode added as an option at the end of any game (check all your moves, and even replay levels by retroactively changing your decisions)


Other Updates


  • Art update: (i) New world map additions, (ii) Gold chest visual for wins/losses, (iii) tengu + goblin on the main screen, (iv) updated faction button colors
  • New animations for certain units (work in progress, more will be added, and the existing ones will be tweaked)
  • A few bug fixes; now able to draw arrows during opponent's turn, selected unit can move right after opponent's turn without having to re-click, monkey throw pawn promotion fixed, beta testers not having access to mermaids/dragons/genies fixed (hopefully).

Mad Chess Beta 0.82 - Wace's Workshop -

Development for the game has been steady and shared primarily on Discord, but now that Mad Chess is getting closer to a real final product, all the next updates will be shared here as well.

General upgrades


  • Workshop: (i) Buy any factions you want without playing adventure mode (ii) buy 8 new boards (with more incoming) and (iii) buy an adventure reset (*Please note that this shop is only a first iteration and that the prices are low now so that you can buy everything almost instantly but will be increased later to match the real experience for new players)
  • Cancel premoves: you can now cancel your premoves by clicking the unit or right-clicking
  • Adventure boards: most levels now have a pre-determined new board (still missing a few) + new dragon/centaur forest on world map to match the background

Bug fixes


  • Fixed a bug that made it impossible to leave a multiplayer game when clicking ''close'' to check the game
  • Fixed a bug that made the main menu music play during online games
  • Fixed a bug that made the game generate different factions if someone picked ''random'' while the other player didn't have all factions unlocked
  • Having only 2 kings on the board is now an automatic draw (more of these rules will follow).

Mad Chess is a massive Expansion Pack to classic chess that adds new factions to the game such as dragons, vampires & angels for a grand total of 13 armies based on RPG-class archetypes.

Mad Chess is a game that maintains standard chess rules while adding more than 80 unique fairy chess pieces divided into 13 armies of equal strength. Most armies have the same pawns and kings as classic chess, but the 4 other pieces, while having the same movement patterns, trade their reduced range for special RPG abilities.

This makes Mad Chess easy to learn but hard to master. With 91 match-ups instead of 1, chess just got its biggest expansion pack in centuries. Madness? No. Mad Chess.
