Nominate Manifold Garden for the Steam Awards!

Since launching on Steam in October, we've been thrilled with the reception that Manifold Garden has gotten. It has been an honor to see the game receive “Overwhelmingly Positive” acclaim.

If you've enjoyed Manifold Garden, please consider nominating the game in the Steam Awards for the category Outstanding Visual Style. We poured a lot of love and attention into Manifold Garden's visuals, and we are so proud of the final result. If you haven't seen it, here's a video comparing the visuals between 2015 and 2019. You can see how much we improved and refined over the years:

Several institutions have already recognized Manifold Garden with nominations and showcases. It was nominated for Best Debut at both the BAFTA Game Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards. It is also part of the Beazley Designs of the Year exhibit at the Design Museum in London.

The Steam Awards is special to us because it's chosen by the community. Your vote means a lot to us.

Thank you for your consideration.

Beazley Designs of the Year Nomination

Manifold Garden has been nominated for the Beazley Designs of the Year at the Design Museum in London.

Designs of the Year is an annual international design awards and exhibition hosted by the Design Museum. The exhibition showcases around 70 curator-selected projects from the previous year, across a variety of disciplines.

There are six categories, Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product and Transport. Manifold Garden was nominated for the "Digital" category, and is actually the only game nominated this year. This is a real honor for us and we are absolutely thrilled.

Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, the Design Museum is temporarily closed. However, there is a People's Choice Award, which is open to the public. You can vote for the project here: https://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/beazley-designs-of-the-year/digital

Graphics and Rendering in Manifold Garden

Today, Monday October 26th at 3pm ET/12pm PT, I will be chatting with Arthur Brussee and Sam Blye about the rendering system and visual effects in Manifold Garden.

It will be on my twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/williamchyr) We'll talk about their experience working on the game, how the soundscape changed over time, and what their influences and inspirations were.

Arthur Brussee is the graphics programmer on Manifold Garden, and is the architect of the rendering pipeline. The edge detection shader, world wrapping effect, and portals all work beautifully in the game thanks largely to his efforts.

Here's a talk Arthur gave at SIGGRAPH this year about the rendering tech in Manifold Garden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VozHerlOQw

Sam Blye was the VFX programmer on Manifold Garden. His work can be seen in the kaleidoscopic visuals throughout the game, and most prominently in the ending.

Sound Design & Music of Manifold Garden

On Saturday, October 24th at 3pm ET/12pm PT, I will be chatting with Laryssa Okada and Martin Kvale about the music and sound design of Manifold Garden.

It will be on my twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/williamchyr) We'll talk about their experience working on the game, how the soundscape changed over time, and what their influences and inspirations were.

For her work on Manifold Garden's soundtrack, Laryssa Okada received the received the G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild) 2019 Breakout Talent Award.

Martin Kvale is the sound designer of Manifold Garden. His other projects include: Hidden Folks, Gonner, Among the Sleep, and Bad North.

The Design & Art of Manifold Garden

On Friday, October 23rd at 3pm ET/12pm PT, I'm going to do a stream on my twitch channel where I play through older builds of Manifold Garden and discuss how the design and art style of the game evolved over the course of 7 years of development.

As a preview, here are some images from the first prototype (then titled "Relativity") that I wrote during Thanksgiving weekend in November 2012. It was meant to be a small practice project to learn the basics of Unity. I thought it would take me no more than 3 months...

This is what the game looks like now:

As you can see, A LOT changed over the years.

Here's a GDC talk I gave back in 2016 about the level design in Manifold Garden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2zmmcEryw

The stream won't be a lecture like the GDC talk, but instead It'll be much more casual. I'll play through older builds and talk about design decisions I made, why I made them, how they changed overtime, etc.

If you're interested in game development, definitely stop by and ask a question.
