Patch Notes 2.2 - Holiday Content

NEW FEATURES

  • Klaw Raid Discordant Sound - Teamwork, communication, tactics—you'll want to assemble your best four-player squad for this one. Following the events of the War for Wakanda Expansion, the sonic monster Klaw has returned to the Vibranium Mound with a seething determination to destroy Wakanda. This is where you finish him off for good and claim the highest-end gear—but he’s so not going down without a fight.
  • Power-Level Increase – The maximum Power Level achievable has increased from 150 to 175. Want the best gear? Then you’ll have to complete the game’s toughest challenge. The new four-player Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound is waiting for you.
  • Gear Upgrade Rework - Players can infuse gear with other pieces to increase its Power Level. This way, the gear you like can now be carried along your journey! Only gear that is above Power Level 100 and of Epic rarity or higher can be upgraded. Using higher Power Level gear to infuse will offer greater stats than lower Power Level.
  • Resources Rework - The only resources needed to upgrade gear and Minor Artifacts are Fragments and Upgrade Modules. Major Artifacts now require a mix of Fragments and Polychoron.
  • Gear Perks Rework - Gear Perks have gone through some changes to allow each Hero to be more themed in what they can achieve in combat. We have also added Status effects to gear for Heroes who are currently missing them. All of them. Every single one. Specific Perk reworks are also in the Gear section below.
  • Per-Hero Weekly Objectives - Every Hero can now get an Exotic from the weekly mission chain in Omega-Level Threat: Family Reunion and Raid: Discordant Sound instead of just once per account.
  • Omega-Gear Rewards - Every completion of Omega-Level Threat: Family Reunion and Raid: Discordant Sound grants a piece of Exotic gear. The weekly mission chain grants Exotic gear that can upgrade your Power Level while additional completions grant Exotics at the Hero’s same Power Level.
  • Shipments - We've heard your requests for a path to earn coveted Cosmetics, resources, and other items via gameplay, as well as a place to use your plentiful Units. Enter the Shipments feature! Each Shipment costs 500 Units (the currency earned while playing the game) and pulls from a collection of possible items, but you can see what is in the current Shipment before you buy it with Units. There is a small chance of the Shipment containing a premium Outfit unavailable via any other means of acquisition. But luck isn’t required to get the Outfit—you’ll automatically receive it after claiming 100 Shipments. Shipments are not available for the Japan region at this time.
  • Cosmetic Vendor – Chastity McBride’s wares have been restocked and now include a Specialty Items section that allow for more player choice.

  • Black Panther’s Immovable Object Skill’s pulse damage now deals the correct 30% damage.

GEAR, REWARDS, AND CHALLENGES

  • Tachyon Surge Perk – We heard your feedback regarding the change to this perk and wanted to share more information regarding it. The term “Status Damage” is intended to reference the amount of status build up that an attack would inflict when dealing damage to a target, not the actual amount of damage dealt. Shortly after the Tachyon Surge perk was released, we identified an issue where it was applying a 20-second buff that gave both a 50% bonus to status build up and 50% increased damage. This made it overpowered when compared to things like heroic buffs, skills, and other gear perks so we took steps to fix that error. To help alleviate some of this frustration, we are bringing back the damage buff, but reducing the overall buff duration to 10 seconds.

  • Ms. Marvel Perk Changes:
  • >>>Stormranger's Regalia and Stormranger's Adornments - Replaced the Jarvis Barrier perk with Embiggen Impulse increasing stun damage while Embiggen’d.
  • >>>Marvelous Regalia - Replaced the generic regen perk with Valorous Spirit, increasing Allies crit damage when affected by Team Spirit.
  • >>>Stormranger's Coat of Arms, Stormranger's Crest, Marvelous Armaments, and Marvelous Body Armor. Replaced the generic regen perk with Support Empowerment, giving a moderate chance to gain an intrinsic burst when activating Team Spirit.
  • >>>Stormranger's Body Armor - Replaces both generic regen perks with Embiggen Blessing (increases crit chance while Embiggen’d) and Polymorph Reserve (increases Ms. Marvel’s max intrinsic energy).
  • >>>Marvelous Nega Bands and Marvelous Clasps - Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Polymorphic Superiority, increasing damage from Morning Star and Palm Strike attacks.
  • Captain America Perk Changes:
  • >>>Helm of the Super Soldier and Safeguard of the Super Soldier. Replaced the generic regen perk for Brooklyn Brawler Quake, increasing stun damage while Brooklyn Brawler is active. Replaced Rally Cry Extender with Brooklyn Brawler Breaker, increasing its damage.
  • >>>Rampart of the Nomad. Replaced generic regen perk with Eagle's Cry, increasing Rally Cry duration.
  • >>>Legendary Stabilizer of the Super Soldier and Conduit of the Super Soldier
Stabilizer: replaced Captain’s Combo with Powered Precision, which increases Powered ranged crit chance.
  • >>>Conduit: replaced Captain’s Combo with Powered Precision, which increases Powered ranged crit chance. Also replaced Defender's Charge with Rally Cry Boon, which increases crit chance of all heroes affected by Rally Cry.
  • >>>The Exotic version of Stabilizer of the Super Soldier did not undergo these changes, and retains Captain's Combo.

  • Iron Man Perk Changes:
  • >>>Superior Mark XV Bastion. Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Skyguard Reprieve, which grants intrinsic energy on picking up health packs. Replaced Overcharge Recovery with Restoration Beam, which makes enemies defeated with your standard Unibeam drop health packs.
  • >>>Centurion's Mark XV Doom Fists and Centurion's Mark XIII Muon Gloves. Replaced weapon rate of fire increase perk with Skyguard Dynamo, granting bonus Intrinsic energy when picking up heroic orbs.
  • >>>Centurion's Mark XV R.T. Node and Centurion's Mark XIII Muon Ray. Replaced missile rate of fire increase perk with Overcharge Breaker, increasing further all damage while overcharged.

  • Thor Perk Changes:
  • >>>Armor of Asgard's Scion. Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Odinforce Recovery, increasing health regen drastically while Odinforce is active.
  • >>>Replaced Extended Evade with Warrior's Fury Impulse, increasing all stun damage while Warrior’s Fury is active.
  • >>>Cincture of Asgard's Scion. Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Aesir's Blitz, increasing Unarmed damage by 30%.
  • >>>Girdle of the Thunderer.
Replaced Odinforce regen perk that was not activating on all attacks with Odin's Flight, which increases Odinforce regeneration while flying.
  • >>>Hilt of Asgard's Scion.
Replaced Odin's Flight with Eitri's Breaker, which increases Hammer damage when used in Melee.

  • Black Widow Perk Changes:
  • >>>Natalia's Cloak and Natalia's Embrace.
Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Stealth Amplifier, increasing status buildup while invisible.
  • >>>Red Room Uniform and Red Room Corset.
Replaced Extended Evade for Stealth Recovery, drastically increasing health regen while invisible.
Replaced Dazed Immunity for Leeching Strike, which heals a very small portion of max health on attack.
  • Natasha's Coil and Natasha's Ribbon.
Natasha’s Ribbon: Replaced generic Heroic regen perk for Leeching Strike.
Natasha's Coil: replaced both generic Heroic regen perks for Leeching Strike and Arsenal Blessing, increasing weapon critical chance.
  • Red Room Grasps.
Replaced Jarvis Barrier perk with Infiltrator's Vengeance, which gives a chance on defeating any enemy to drop an Intrinsic orb.

  • Kate’s Shroud Effector perk description now properly displays the missing percent symbol—the perk gives 30% reduced damage, where before it incorrectly said it gave 30 reduced damage.
  • Hawkeye’s Iconic Outfit is now obtained by completing his Iconic/Heroic Mission Chain rather than through the Future Imperfect Operation. If you already have the Outfit, it will remain in your collection unaffected.
  • The Counter Extension perk works correctly and extends the duration of the debuff that is applied to enemies after a successful parry.
  • Ms. Marvel’s Polymorphic Disruptor, Reprieve, and Dynamo Perks now correctly drop Intrinsic orbs, health packs, and Heroic orbs respectively.
  • Iron Man’s Skyguard Reprieve and Skyguard Dynamo Perks now correctly grant Intrinsic Energy when collecting health packs and Heroic orbs, respectively.
  • When playing Black Panther, a Strike Team member who is also playing Black Panther can no longer complete Challenge Card missions for you.
  • Thor’s Asgard’s Privilege Perk now properly grants Willpower when Overcharged.
  • Ms. Marvel’s Polymorphic Spark now properly grants Heroic charge rate while Polymorph is active.
  • Fixed an issue that was unintentionally reducing Hulkbuster damage.
  • Fixed issues with several perks wherein the displayed value of the damage bonus or rate of fire bonus was not being applied correctly.
  • Perks that were affected by this issue and are now fixed are Bunker Buster Missiles, Hyper Flux Lasers, Skyguard Dominion, Polymorphic Superiority, Armory Rush, Archer’s Rush, and Accelerated Muon Repulsors.
  • Fixed the issue preventing Hawkeye’s Hivemind Sword with Plasma Split Shot Arrows from working.
  • Removed the Sonic Status effect from being applied via some of Captain Americas Heroic and Intrinsic attacks. Sorry Cap mains.
  • Challenge Card progress now correctly carries over between Xbox and Windows PC versions.
  • The amount of Fragments players get when dismantling gear has been greatly increased. To account for this, Bronze Chests rewards have now been standardized: they will always only award 1 gear item or ISO-8 up to Epic Rarity. As an additional balancing measure, these Chests will now award 10 Units instead of the previous 1 to 3 Units.
Bronze Strongboxes will no longer give out Fragments, as is the standard with all tiers of Strongboxes. Only Stockpile Chests will award Fragments.

KNOWN ISSUES AND WORKAROUNDS

  • The Lethal Conduit perk (found on Discordant Gear) grants the Sonic Conduit buff to all nearby allies upon defeating an enemy with an active Vibranium Status effect. This perk is not working consistently right now, and we are investigating.
  • Black Widow has dyed her hair brown for the Winter when wearing her Monatomic Outfit. Rest assured, she will be back to her neon red color soon.
  • Gear dismantled in player’s Gear Locker still refund resources that are no longer used. This is a visual bug. The proper amount of Fragments and modules are still being dropped. We are working on a fix for this.
  • There is another visual bug where gear in a player’s Gear Locker will show the old upgrade system. Any gear put into the Locker will show the old system and removing gear from the Locker will show the correct new upgrade system. We are investigating this.
Any previously upgraded gear has a chance to drop old resources when dismantled. This is a visual bug, as you get proper Fragments, but old resources may show up in the resource feed. We are investigating a fix for this.
  • In the Control Tower Traversal section of the Raid, a black sphere appears after Iron Man shoots a Klaw Company Bruiser with his Repulsors with the Muon Reverberator gear perk equipped. The Iron Man player is unable to see the black sphere appear. The black sphere eventually disappears after some time.
  • The Marketplace preview image for the Spider-Man Emote “Aww Shucks” is incorrect, and currently shows the “Apple Toss” Emote instead. You will get the proper “Aww Shucks” Emote if you purchase.
  • In the final phase of the battle against Klaw in Discordant Sound, whenever Klaw slams his cannon onto the main platform, several giant flying rocks appear, obstructing vision. This happens when Graphics Mode is set to Highest Quality. We advise using a different Graphics Mode for the time being.
  • When dismissing the Gear Upgrade tutorial, if the Shipments Refreshed message is present before entering the Character Menu, the game becomes completely unresponsive to input. Restarting the game will fix this. This issue can be avoided by opening the Character Menu when the Shipments Refreshed menu appears.
  • In the Japan region, the Rise and Shine mission erroneously references a Shipment Voucher reward. Shipments and Shipment Vouchers are not available in Japan at this time.
  • Gear that is older than v.2.0.2 is currently unable to be transferred from the Inventory Locker to Character Menu/Inventory.

Marvel's Avengers: State of the Game Update #2

To our community:

A year ago, we embarked on an adventure together. Like any journey worth taking, there have been triumphs and tribulations, as well as lessons and learnings. Now, a year later, how we apply what we’ve learned and improve from it makes us better; and we are best defined by the company we keep and the friends we’ve made along the way. Let’s look briefly back at this last year and forward to what’s ahead.

A Year of Heroes
It has been immensely rewarding to see our community assemble to master their favorite Avengers’ moves, min-max their stats, and coordinate Strike Teams with their friends. We’ve also been thrilled to watch the community grow and see veterans welcoming new Heroes to the Avenger’s Initiative.

While what each of us has achieved on our own is impressive, the full Marvel’s Avengers fanbase has performed heroic acts across the globe. Some fun stats to reflect on:

  • Over 619 million Power Levels & 275 million Hero Levels have been earned
  • 23 million HARM rooms have been completed
  • 8 billion enemies have been defeated in the Avenger’s Initiative
  • Abomination is the most defeated boss, coming in at 9.4 million times
  • 23 million Drop Zone, 17 million Hero Missions, and 12 million Villain Sectors have been completed
  • 9.6 billion Fragments have been found, 4.5 billion Catalysts recovered, 569.2 million Polychoron claimed, and 1.5 billion Upgrade Modules rewarded

It is extraordinary to see how far we’ve come in just one year! Thank you for all of these victories! As for the War for Wakanda expansion, it’s obvious that many are enjoying time with the King.

  • 3.4 million Hunter Crawlers and 50 million Scout Crawlers have been sent back to AIM in pieces
  • 64.4 million Klaue Company mercs are rethinking their life choices
  • Black Panther has defeated 153 million enemies across 9 million missions in Wakanda

War for Wakanda has been a tremendous return for many of our past players as well as a welcoming gateway into Marvel’s Avengers for many players’ first time! The team at Crystal is proud of what we’ve achieved with War for Wakanda, and we hope everyone is enjoying such an immensely important character and world.

A Year of Growing
The year since launch has been a period of growth for our studio & team, our game, and our community.

We opened a new studio (Hello Crystal Southwest!) and continued to refine our work-from-home environments. In mid-June 2021 we had a limited “soft re-opening” of our studios, using this period as a trial run for one-day fully reopening. Alas, as conditions have changed at each of our locations, we’ve adjusted those plans (since we always put the team’s health and safety first) and have extended our primarily work-from-home plans into early next year and beyond. We may still be apart, but we are always together.

We’re now in the middle of the uniquely challenging task – finding the best way to support a hybrid “work-from-both" environment. Many Crystalites are eager to return to in-person collaboration rather than just online, while others have truly embraced working from the comfort of their own homes. It’s been a fun challenge to optimize collaboration across these two environments, but these last seventeen months have taught us that it’s about going-forward, facing those challenges, and together saying “we’ve got this, whatever it takes.”

The Marvel’s Avengers gameplay world has also grown! From grand additions like new Heroes, Operations, and an expansion; to refinements and quality-of-life updates made from our evolving understanding of how fans play and what is most desired from Marvel’s Avengers.

In our first State of the Game Update, we identified four key areas of impact, and have worked against them continuously through the past year since launch, they were:

Performance & Stability: We’ve greatly improved stability & squashed bugs with near-weekly patches since launch, and we feel the successful launch of War for Wakanda illustrates our ongoing commitment to quality. We also brought Marvel’s Avengers to next-gen consoles, loaded with upgrades for no additional cost for players. Next-gen allowed for even more performance improvements, including updated visuals, improved destruction and detail, and significantly faster load times. While overall stability is strong, we know there are still some remaining bugs that distract from the play experience, and we are shifting even more of our attention to them in the near future.

Multiplayer/Matchmaking: In addition to improving the stability of this critical feature, we made it our goal to allow players to matchmake with a larger pool of players online. We’ve done this through incentivizing online play with content like a daily quickmatch XP reward and with the recent change to make Temporal Assault permanent – allowing for multiples of the same Hero in Strike Teams. We’ve also added quality-of-life features that aid in online communication, such as the ping system. Improving matchmaking and the multiplayer experience is something that we’ll continue working on into the future.

Rewards: Tuning rewards is an ongoing effort for Marvel’s Avengers, as we’re constantly evaluating game telemetry and online feedback. This has come in the form of guaranteeing Exotic drops through specific mission types, to adding new elements to the game such as the Cargo Runner Synthoid. We’ve also spiced up our cosmetics with animated nameplates, and we have begun offering free items in the Marketplace to show appreciation for our players.

Late-Game Content: Content for our highest-leveled players is and continues to be a major area of focus for us in Marvel’s Avengers. We’ve made refinements to existing content to make it more challenging and rewarding with even higher global stakes. Content offering fresh challenges and complex combat that requires tactical thinking for advanced players includes the Beating the Odds Villain Sector, featuring the Scientist Supreme’s secret weapon: the Cosmic Cube!

Customizable HARM Rooms have allowed for a personalized (and if desired, punishing) training experience with modifiers like enemy types, numbers, environmental hazards, difficulty, and buffs! We’ve seen players use customizable HARM rooms to slow down and learn strategies for new Heroes as well as challenge themselves with a punishing gauntlet for the Heroes they’ve already mastered.

The addition of multiplayer to Mega Hives has allowed for more tactical team runs, which can help train Strike Teams for the big bads - Omega-Level Threats (OLTs). Our first OLT– Family Reunion – requires full four-player Strike Teams at Power level 145+ to revisit the fight against the Super-Adaptoid. We have seen some insane Super-Adaptoid runs, and have enjoyed community members assisting others in completing it as a team.

And all of this has been happening in parallel with a ton of story and Hero releases: Operation Kate Bishop: Taking Aim, Operation Clint Barton: Future Imperfect, and our recent War for Wakanda Expansion added cinematic storytelling through both single-player and cooperative play, extending the overall Marvel’s Avengers story to over 25 hours. These content drops have also added iconic new villains, new enemies, new biomes, and more!

Fan requests have also guided our content strategy, such as Reassemble Campaign Replay, Operation Replay, reducing the Mega Hive to just four steps, having Priority Missions grant Exotics, allowing running in Outposts, having multiple Faction terminals in Outposts, ranged-enemy attack indicators, and just recently, our UX/UI Overhaul. In fact, while the UX/UI rework was very well received, we heard that there are too many clicks required to dismantle gear – so we plan to update that too!

This is just a quick look back at some of the bigger moments over this first year and how things have progressed and evolved with everyone’s time, input, and feedback. Now let’s look to the promise of Marvel’s Avengers’ future yet to come.

A Year of Learning
This past year has taught us so much – from showcasing what modes and missions players favor, to social media surfacing quality-of-life improvements needed, to forums and livestreams illuminating what our players want most out of Marvel’s Avengers.

The North Star for our development team for the last several months has been delivering the best version of Wakanda and the Black Panther to our fans. Now that we’ve launched War for Wakanda, we’re shifting our attention to some other areas of the game that we want to address in the next phase. In the upcoming months, we plan to rework and improve many of the game’s systems to make it more rewarding to play on an ongoing basis. At the same time, we are looking at how people are playing and analyzing what works and what we could do better.

For those just entering this world, we have a slew of great cinematic content waiting for you – from the full campaign to new Operations and our recent Expansion. Moving forward, our goal is to deliver more compelling Avengers Initiative content that is replayable. We know our dedicated fans want challenges worthy of the Avengers, and to get that thrill the first time and as strongly the next time they replay it or try it with a different hero in their roster. The upcoming Klaw Raid called Discordant Sound is a great example of what we aim to achieve with future content – more on that below.

Check out our updated Roadmap to see where this refined development philosophy is taking us into next year.

The Road Ahead...

We’ve just rolled out two new permanent quests that reward players with resources for regular play in the Avengers Initiative. The daily quest - “Rise & Shine” - offers up Fragments and Upgrade Modules for completion. The weekly quest - “Up for the Challenge” - will reward a Fragment Booster, Hero’s Catalyst, and Units. The goal is to reward players who are fighting the good fight with even more opportunities to power up assembled teams.

This month we’ll be focusing on in-game community activities, and a celebration of Marvel’s Avengers’ one-year anniversary! Happy Anniversary to everyone and THANK YOU for being on this journey together from the start!

From Sept. 2-16 we’ll reward players who log in and complete all the story-based campaigns (Reassemble, Taking Aim, Future Imperfect, and War for Wakanda) with a celebratory nameplate. For those of you who have already completed all campaign content, the reward is granted retroactively. There will also be free items in the marketplace:

  • Week 1: A free Iron Man outfit and anniversary bundle (Black Panther nameplate, Hero’s Catalyst, and Fragment Extractor)
  • Week 2: A free Thor outfit and an additional Hero’s Catalyst

We’ll also roll out three in-game community activities in September – the first being Priority Rush Missions, which allows players the chance to complete one Priority Mission every day rather than only one per week – this means more chances for exotic gear!

We’ll round out the month with another community activity that greatly increases the spawn rate of the Cargo Runner Synthoid, as well as a third activity offering additional rewards for completing Campaign Flashback missions. Paired with an XP-boosting event, all Heroes will feel extra powerful by the end of September. It’s a great time to jump in and rapidly boost your alt Heroes or max out new ones!

Last, but not least, new MCU-inspired outfits are coming to the Marketplace. We’re thrilled with the reception of these outfits from the community, and we’re humbled to hear that we’ve done these iconic outfits justice. In fact, the latest is the Marvel Studios’ Black Panther Outfit for T’Challa – we know many players have been waiting for this one.

The rest of the Roadmap includes in-game events, new content, system updates, and of course, a certain friendly neighborhood hero coming to PlayStation consoles. All of this while we continue improving systems and quality-of-life features to constantly push for the best in-game experiences, so keep that feedback coming!

Let’s start with systems. We’re systemically reworking resources and gear upgrading fueled by player feedback.

System Reworks
Gear: Improved gear upgrading, more rewarding gear, more late-game focused gear... we hear you! With the upcoming power-level increase we want to make sure players can keep their hard-earned gear as they progress. The new system will allow players to upgrade Epic, Legendary, & Exotic gear from power level 100 all the way to the new power level cap! As we continue improving gear, we are also taking a closer look at Hero Set Gear: where it’s obtained and how to improve clarity around use. We’ll have more details about all of this in a future blog.

Resources: We’re currently working towards a more streamlined and focused approach to resources. In this new system, each resource will have a single specific purpose to help improve clarity – like how Polychoron is used exclusively for upgrading major artifacts, and Upgrade Modules are reserved for upgrading gear. Fragments will be the sole exception as they will remain a resource with multiple uses. We’ll share more details as our plans are finalized.

Earnable Cosmetics: We’re adding ways to earn cosmetics through gameplay, including items that were previously only available in the Marketplace. We'll talk more about the details of those systems in the coming months as they are added to the game.

Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound & Power-Level Cap Increase
We’re also polishing our first raid – available in both standard (PL 150-160) and Elite modes (PL 160-175) – which will offer a conclusion to Klaue’s story in War for Wakanda. This will be the most challenging content yet, meant to not only test the mastery of each Hero but also the well-built four-player Strike Teams out there! Collaboration and observation are crucial to beating this one.

The Klaw Raid features custom-crafted levels, new threats that require complex and tactical combat, and stronger enemy variety themed to the Villain being faced. New enemies called Echoes – sound constructs created by Klaw - have been created and tailored exclusively for this experience. With the Power Level increase to 175 yielding more compelling drops, it is a notable example of replayable and rewarding content that fits our mantra moving forward.

Celebrating the Marvel Universe
One of the things we most love about working on Marvel’s Avengers is our opportunity to celebrate exciting new content from all branches of Marvel media. We’ll be offering some well-timed tie-in events coordinated with Disney + Marvel programs and, we’ll be releasing more MCU outfits as we collaborate with each production’s creative teams.

Events
Between larger game updates we’ll be bringing back limited-time events to give our new players a chance to try them out and provide everyone opportunities to earn exclusive rewards and high-level gear. These events include our Corrupted Vibranium Event, Red Room Takeover, Tachyon Anomaly Event, and Cosmic Threat Event.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Finally, there will be a new playable Hero with a Hero Event starring Spider-Man in 2021, only on PlayStation platforms. We’ll have more information on Spider-Man closer to launch and you may catch a glimpse of him here and there along the way.

And Beyond...
We have many plans beyond this most recent Roadmap update that stretch into late winter and beyond, including addressing long-standing asks, to quality-of-life improvements, to new Heroes, Villains, and more. We’ll also provide updates on Patrol Mode and Omega-Level Threat: Cloning Labs when we have concrete news to share.

MOST OF ALL, THANK YOU!
Thank you for taking the time to digest all this information! We hope it echoes how committed we are to attacking the past issues and forging a future of new opportunities. There are still new stories to tell, new battles to fight, and new Avengers adventures to conquer. But that’s for the next update...

On behalf of everyone across the world who works on and plays in Marvel’s Avengers, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you for playing, building, supporting, challenging, believing, and assembling. Please continue to share your feedback online – it remains our compass for the future as we are one team, one dream.

Thank you,

- Crystal Dynamics Head of Studio, Scot Amos

STORY & WORLD

To ensure our original War for Wakanda story does justice to such an important hero, our talented narrative team enlisted the help of well-known writer and Black Panther expert Evan Narcisse, author of the Rise of the Black Panther Marvel comics. Evan was particularly inspired by past Black Panther storylines, including Who is the Black Panther (2005), The Deadliest of the Species & Power (2009-2010), Black Panther - Long Live the King (2017), and A Nation Under Our Feet & Avengers of the New World (2016- 2018).

In collaboration with Evan, the writing team felt it important to ensure this was a story with Wakanda at the center, although it takes place within a larger Avengers universe. As many of you know, Wakanda is a sovereign African nation and the most advanced civilization on Earth. Its technological advancement is fueled by Vibranium, a precious material found only in a meteor that crashed on Earth centuries ago. The kingdom is ruled by King T’Challa the Black Panther, and in War for Wakanda, T’Challa is faced with an unprecedented invasion that will not only put his strength to the test as the Black Panther, but as a king, a leader, and a brother.

This invasion is led by a familiar foe to fans of Black Panther - Ulysses Klaue. A rogue scientist with a dark secret and a darker grudge, Klaue has assembled an army of mercenaries equipped with deadly sonic technology, bankrolled by one of the world’s most sinister organizations. Klaue launches sonic fracking towers across Wakanda to extract the Vibranium from the ground, a devastating process that corrupts the Vibranium and creates clusters of deadly poisonous shards.

This is how the Avengers get involved in War for Wakanda. After the A-Day disaster, Wakanda closed its borders and cut off all communication with the outside world. After the dangerous corrupted Vibranium starts to appear across the globe, the Avengers travel to Wakanda to offer their help to King T’Challa.

The new Expansion unfolds in the jungles of Wakanda – a new Biome – and showcases both the rich and amazing history of this ancient, unconquered African country but also the futuristic technology of contemporary Wakanda. At the center is the Wakandan capital Birnin Zana, where our new Outpost is located. It features King T’Challa’s throne room from where he rules, and the command center where all important decisions regarding the country’s security take place. Shuri’s lab houses the nerve center for Wakanda’s Kimoyo network. The spiritual annex is located on the lower floor, where Zawavari aids the royal family in the ways of mystical powers.

The Wakanda mission design is built on the same foundation as Marvel’s Avengers, but with new objectives and an extra focus on dangerous traversal, exploration, and puzzles. Almost all War for Wakanda content is multiplayer-enabled, apart from the introduction mission, where Black Panther is introduced and celebrated as a new unique hero.

CAST & CHARACTERS

T’Challa – voiced by the incredibly talented Christopher Judge of God of War and Stargate fame – is joined by a phenomenal cast who bring his most trusted advisors and dangerous adversary to life.

Princess Shuri – played by Erica Lutrell from Dishonored, Westworld and Apex Legends is the head of technological development in Wakanda. She does not agree with T’Challa’s approach to dealing with Klaue, and the War for Wakanda exposes the fragility of T’Challa and Shuri’s relationship. It sets up a series of confrontations that will test their bond. Even if they all find a way to come together, it may not be enough to stop the growing threat to Wakanda and its people.

Okoye – played by Debra Wilson from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – is the captain of the King’s guard and the voice of truth for T’Challa. Zawavari – a mystic who has a fraught relationship with the royal family – is played by Dave Fennoy, best known from the Walking Dead games.

Last but not least, Steve Blum leads the invasion into Wakanda as Ulysses Klaue.

To get the Wakandan accent right, our team worked closely with Beth McGuire, the dialect coach from the Marvel Studios’ Black Panther movie. Beth has had multiple coaching sessions with each of the key actors to ensure that the accents are properly delivered.

GAMEPLAY

On to gameplay, as we know you’re all eager to traverse through the jungles of Wakanda with the King. Black Panther’s combat focuses on his cat-like agility and the unique Vibranium technology of Wakanda. In addition to the below, other skills can be unlocked to power up his sprint, evade, and finishers. Here is a look at his custom moves:
  • Out of My Sight (Signature Attack): Out of My Sight is Black Panther’s Signature Attack, which can be charged with intrinsic energy to perform the Kinetic Slash, a spiraling uppercut. From this move, Black Panther can branch in and out of the Spinning Strike Light Combo.
  • Pounce (Power Attack): Pounce from the ground or the air to grab enemies and unleash a flurry of claw strikes.
  • Intrinsic: The Intrinsic meter is super important for Black Panther. You’re going to want to prioritize blocking and parrying to store kinetic energy, which can then be released in a Percussive Blast.
  • Percussive Blast: Black Panther’s Percussive Blast unleashes all your stored energy in a large kinetic burst that knocks away nearby enemies and boosts Black Panther’s melee damage for a short time.
  • Panther’s Parry: Perform a parry just before an enemy attack connects, to turn their attack into a blast of kinetic energy that knocks them back and staggers nearby foes. Enemies who have recently been parried are easier to interrupt with attacks.
  • Devastating Daggers: Black Panther can construct daggers made of energy and Vibranium which can be thrown at enemies, near or far. His basic daggers will embed into targets making them more vulnerable to melee damage. They’re a great way to weaken an enemy before unleashing a barrage of melee attacks.
  • Kimoyo Beads: The Kimoyo Beads can target enemies or allies and provide either detrimental or restorative abilities to their targets. The beads can be upgraded to provide additional support or offensive capabilities such as armor against attacks, destroying incoming projectiles, shooting enemy targets or dealing damage over time.
  • King’s Mercy: The assault heroic King’s Mercy is a Vibranium spear that can pin multiple targets and deal out large amounts of damage. The spear can be customized to explode on contact or create multiple smaller spears for rapid fire.
  • Bast’s Chosen: Black Panther’s Ultimate calls upon the power of the Panther Goddess Bast to summon a spectral panther to charge through your foes and empower Black Panther with energy from the Ancestral Plain, boosting defensive capabilities. Unleash supercharged attacks without expending any intrinsic energy. Bast’s Chosen can be customized to revive downed heroes, weaken nearby enemies, and even summon spectral warriors to fight alongside.

Black Panther is a fully unique hero with the same number of skills and gear as the rest of the Avengers, and will have around 40 outfits, as well as a full suite of emotes, takedowns, and nameplates for the marketplace.

ENEMIES

Wakanda will release with several new enemies. The main villain is Black Panther’s nemesis from the comics, Ulysses Klaue. We’re bringing a new sonic rendition of him to life based on his iconic comics look. As mentioned, Klaue’s story is linked to Wakanda, and the Expansion will explore our all-new origin story for the character.

We're excited to announce the legendary comic villain Crossbones as Klaue’s head lieutenant. Crossbones, aka Brock Rumlow, is a sociopathic super-mercenary who works for the highest bidder and he’s ready to lead the invasion of Wakanda. Crossbones is a formidable foe and has an impressive arsenal at his disposal, including an impenetrable shield that makes him immune to many of Black Panther’s attacks. Klaue also brought with him a team of mercenaries that have a variety of Vibranium and sonic powered weapons and should pose a real challenge for Black Panther and the Avengers.

We’re also introducing a new menace: the arachnid-like Crawlers. They come in different variants, including smaller sized Scout Crawlers and large Hunter Crawlers.

UI Update

Also dropping tomorrow is a UI Update with popular changes requested by our community! Some of the biggest updates are related to the new unified character page. It contains everything associated with a hero in one easy to navigate space. Here, you can manage your gear, cosmetics, emotes, and takedowns, as well as view hero and challenge card progress; so you can get back to the action more quickly.

This update also includes commonly requested improvements for managing a hero's loadout including: more easily comparing items, locking your favorite gear for safety, and dismantling multiple items at once. Direct access to your Locker from anywhere adds an extra layer of convenience. This only scratches the surface of the UI improvements our team has crafted for you in this update! Be sure to give us feedback once you check it out so we can continue refinements in the future.

We pulled up our virtual chairs and sat down with @SonicPhoto for a quick interview!

1. Can you introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Noel, from Puerto Rico, better known as @Sonicphoto on Twitter and YouTube! I love doing virtual photography and content creation for Marvel's Avengers!

2. How did you get involved in virtual photography?
I work in photography from time to time in my life, but I always wanted to photograph things that were more of an action-movie style, and that's when virtual photography comes in. I got into virtual photography even more through Instagram and Twitter. Normally, I would take photo mode pictures in games just for myself to remember favorite moments or characters, but I was not aware it was becoming a growing community until I found the Gametographers and other growing communities that kept sharing their favorite shots across the world! It became a way to share more of my photography & film background through video games!

3. Any favorite Hero or locations to take photos of?
The long-awaited Hawkeye is now my favorite Hero in the game to take pictures of, but before he arrived, it was Captain America! I love the variety of poses and animations Clint has between sword skills and archery skills. My favorite location in the game to take pictures is the Spaceshot Drop Zone, with all the environmental hazards and space background. It is tricky to shoot in sometimes, but it’s worth the challenge! In general, I love shooting in maps with a lot of visual flair like Tachyon effects, rain effects in the last campaign mission, and the desert lighting and storms on Future Wastelands.

4. We asked you to choose your favorite shots to be featured in this blog. Why did you go with these?
I love how the lighting and colors turned out for this shot and using the space station for Aerospace Hawkeye was just a perfect fit! I also like the pose to simulate he is entering the room to get into action or just finished the action.

The last mission of the campaign has great visuals and effects and I loved capturing that with this shot in a different outfit for Captain America, giving that soldier training in the rain energy! It also means a lot to me as it was featured on the Marvel's Avengers Essentials Cosmetics & Photo Mode episode. It was a great surprise!

Superior Iron Man is one of my favorite outfits for Tony and this shot was the start of playing more with visual effects of the game in my photos - really happy with how it tuned out. It's also the set of pictures with the most likes I have received on Twitter!

5. You also have a YouTube channel! What kind of content do you create?
I mainly create content guides and news to help keep players up to date on the latest in Marvel’s Avengers! I showcase the latest gameplay content, preview the Marketplace every week, create guides for players to learn the basics of the game like leveling tips, where to find Exotic gear, how to create battery builds for each Hero and more! I also love covering the story aspect of the game so I have videos of all intelligence files to listen to and I been capturing all the unique elevator interactions that I can get in the game and compiling them up together in parts - so far have captured over 200 of them!

6. What are your favorite videos you’ve created? Can you link to them?
My favorites are the elevator interaction ones as it’s been really fun to see more how all the heroes interact and get along! I love that family aspect they give through these conversations and viewers love to comment on them a lot!
You can find the full playlist for them here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1_8BJPiA25pR0TU-XoDG82lk9XUn3euj
Another favorite was my reaction to the Hawkeye Deep Dive! I rarely do reaction videos, but finally seeing my favorite character get his own War Table was a special moment I wanted to capture and share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOHWNBsXYc8
And the other ones I love are my guide videos, because people often let me know if the guide was helpful and if they learned new things with it, so seeing my guides helping others makes me really happy as that has always been my goal! For all my guides playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1_8BJPiA25ot0P2a9TGvJe3ul89211Rl

7. What’s one thing you would say to someone who is just starting their Marvel’s Avengers journey?
I would say take your time diving into the game, taking in its campaign stories all one by one, get to know these characters in a new light, before jumping into the multiplayer aspect. The story and care for its characters is what drives me in the game every day! Knowing these characters more closely is what motivates me to level them stronger, take cool shots of them, and want to learn more of them through gameplay!

8. Anything you want to say to the community?
First of all, I just want to say thank you to every single one of you that have supported me in some way whether it's through content creation or photo mode, I really appreciate every day that I get to be part of this community, I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for your support! And for those of you that may be starting out to create content, keep pushing on! I had been trying to find my place in content creation for some time now, and it finally happened with Marvel’s Avengers, so keep trying! Let yourself grow and most of all, keep having fun doing so!

Red Room Takeover and Champion Levels

On May 20, the Red Room Takeover isn’t the only thing that’s coming to Marvel’s Avengers. We’re introducing post-level 50 progression, also known as the new Champion System!

Marvel's Avengers is also on sale for 40% off until June 3!

The next part of our roadmap is upon us! Following the Rooskaya Protocols that ran from May 6 to May 20, the Red Room Takeover will initiate on May 20 and will last until May 31.

Agent James “Jimmy” Woo has reported a number of anomalies within the HARM Room, linked to an unknown computer virus. His diagnostic tests have indicated that the hack originated from the same IP address as the Rooskaya Protocols. Along with the virus, encrypted messages have been sent, all addressed to Black Widow from “Rooskaya” herself – Yelena Belova.

Multiple hacked HARM Rooms will be available during this event along with new mission chains. These hacked HARM Rooms are single player only as they require agility and a keen sense of your surroundings that may be interrupted by having a team. Each of these will also scale from Power Level 1 to 120.

There are five different hacked HARM Rooms that will test your traversal and evasion abilities so you can feel like a master spy. Yelena Belova isn’t joking around and has placed multiple hazards in these rooms like Techno Lava, which instantly kills Heroes – or enemies – upon touch, and Red Lightning, a more potent form of AIM’s blue lightning. Various enemies will also be trying to take you down. We won’t spoil what the layout is in each of these five hacked HARM Rooms. It’ll spoil Yelena’s fun.

Participating in this event and completing mission chains will reward you with an exclusive animated nameplate and a significant amount of XP. The latter is important because of the new Champion System.

Currently, when Heroes reach the level cap of 50, XP becomes obsolete. With the new Champion System, Heroes who are level 50 can improve their combat abilities even further. Once a Hero reaches level 50, earned XP from that point on is changed to Champion XP, which is specific to each Hero. Earning enough Champion XP will increase your Champion Level, which is marked on your nameplate. Whenever a Hero levels up their Champion Level, they’ll earn a Champion Skill Point, which is used to unlock a multitude of Champion Skills. Champion Skills are on their own separate interface and take the form of boosts to your damage, Perk chance activation, Heroic charge rate, etc. These are permanent increases, so every Champion Skill matters!

Note: You will not be able to respec your Champion Skills yet, so please choose how you want to power up your Hero wisely for the time being.

As a compliment to the Champion System, we’re also introducing Hero’s Catalysts, which increase the amount of XP you’ll earn. These will occasionally be available for free to retrieve from the Marketplace, and we’re looking at other ways you can earn them. Hero’s Catalysts are a great way to catch up to friends or to level up any Heroes that haven’t reached level 50 yet.

We’re excited to see all your Heroes continue to power up in preparation for some of the hardest content we’ll be introducing throughout the year. Show us your builds, your paths, and tell us which Champion Skills you unlocked first!
