Mayhem Brawler II Developer Diary 7: Weapon Masters

Oh, are there even more? Yes, there are! You keep seeing us often because we always bring good news—specifically, Character Concepts for Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds. As you can guess, two more heroes have just arrived as the final pair of the eight playable characters. Hold on! This is no goodbye to our exciting, impressive, and awesomely spectacular Character Concept Arts. They are just the final pair as of yet. You may view new playable characters once we launch the game, and you break it with your superhuman reflexes. Who knows? 🙈🙉🙊

Okay, let's talk about our final pair. Who are these Weapon Masters!? Let's find out. 👇

Perfect Fuse of Slicing and Punching!

Hack 'n' slash games are all about fast-paced, action-packed combat. They often have characters who use weapons; some may have unique abilities tied to certain weapons. Using weapons adds an engaging element to the gameplay, allowing players to feel the impact of their attacks (the satisfaction of landing powerful blows to the enemy's head!) and experience the thrill of battles. Plus, the fluidity of combat movements, weapon animations, and the flashy FX contribute to the overall visual appeal of a game.

Well, Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds is a hack n' slash as much as it's a beat 'em up. By adding weapon master heroes to the game, we aimed to introduce the classic hack n' slash gameplay experience to a beat 'em up. So the two new characters you're about to meet possess trusty weapons on their persons, but that doesn't mean they won't be able to use weapons dropped by the enemies!

Past Weapon Master: Madison "Mindbender" Roberts

Mindbender was the most requested boss in the first game to become a playable character. But as we wanted to save her for the sequel's story, we brought you the little mischief "Alley Witch" in the Witchcraft Update instead.
Story-wise, Mindbender, and Stellar were both highly qualified, legendary Stronghold officers in their youth. They were patrol partners and close friends, so close that Mindbender gladly took care of Stellar's daughter as her child after she was deceased. The rest of the story? You'll have to wait for that.

In the concept, she wears Stronghold's old model official uniform with a cape that carries a medal of honor granted by the queen. Even though she is a recycled character wearing a predesigned uniform, her concept design phase took as long as she went through several revisions.
Mindbender wields a tonfa in one hand, leaving her other hand free for unarmed fighting and, of course, for picking up weapons! She will perform artistic dual-wielding moves with her tonfa and dull old small melee weapons!

Present Weapon Master: Vladimir "Voivoda" Radeck

Voivoda is a cunning businessman who strategically aligns himself with the politically powerful She Wolf, whom he previously attempted to overthrow. In his new design, we changed our approach from the classical "edgy vampire lord" to "vintage chic businessman." We added a long, veeery long ponytail for a distinctive silhouette and more dynamic animations! To match the game's vibrant appearance, we transformed the pastel earth tones of vintage style into a more captivating and contrasting palette. The outcome, unintendedly resembling Halloween colors, was pleasing to all of us!
Voivoda uses a sword while fighting, as you remember from the previous game. However, we changed his longsword into a fancy rapier in the sequel. Because I, as his concept artist, find rapiers very cool. And a rapier suits his personality better. Because a sword is direct and brutal, but a rapier is quick and deadly, which suits his abilities more. 🤺

Just like Mindbender, he has the ability of dual-wielding —but with large melee weapons! That said, due to the range of his sword, he will be quite a challenge to balance. It's not a challenge that we can't overcome, though. 💪

What's Next on the Schedule?

None of us are pureblood vampires, and we don't have years to wait. Don't worry. We are as excited as you are and almost done with our first demo! As we mentioned, we are joining two gaming events next month to showcase the first playable version of our game. One is Mobidictum, Sep 5-6; the other is GIST, Sep 22-23-24. Please keep your eyes open for our Steam page, which will be released soon. Since you have met all our heroes, you'll also see our precious cover art soon. ✨

Mayhem Brawler II Developer Diary 6: Spellcasters

Howdy? 🤠 It’s Dilailah once again! You might remember me from the Character Concepts developer diary, where we discussed creating captivating characters. Well, I’m back to introduce you to the spellcaster heroes of Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds. Get ready to be amazed by their magical powers and engaging personalities. 🧙‍♂️ WOOSH! 💫

Bringing Spectral Blast Into A Fistfight

I’ve always been a safe kind of player in every game. No matter the genre, I choose to play with a mage character if I can because I like to support my teammates without diving into the action myself. However, that approach doesn’t quite cut it in beat ’em ups. Have to get your hands dirty! You know, you have to beat ’em up.
But fear not! Our spellcasters in Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds possess an enchanting blend of magical prowess and physical combat skills. Our spellcasters can defend themselves in every physical matter—with the sparkly flavor of magic! With some special tricks and feats that I’m allowed to spoil only a few, they introduce an element of strategic depth to the gameplay, which means many fun combos and unique playstyles! Not to mention that they will make the game more radiant and colorful. ✨

We are pleased to welcome “Wishmaster” from the past and “Enchantress” from the present. For more information on the different timelines in the sequel, please see our previous Dev Diaries.

Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds - Dev Diaries

Past Spellcaster: Damien “Wishmaster” Walters

It’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since I began my journey with Hero Concept. This super cool guy was my first character design for the Mayhem universe. Design-wise, he is, so far, the most detailed character we have and probably will be the hardest one to animate. It took days to even decide on his color palette. But! Even after dozens of other characters designed for the sequel, Wishmaster is still among my top 5 favorites. I can’t wait to hear your reactions.
In the first game, you neither heard of his name nor his connection to the story. YET. Our fearless leader says that Wishmaster is the founder of Codex Entertainment, therefore, the person who brought esoteric magic to the popular culture of the Mayhem universe. Just bear with us; his lore is deeper than you think. 👀
One of the aspects that truly resonates with me about Wishmaster is how incredibly well he aligns with my preferred playstyle. I’m a big fan of utilizing weapons in beat ’em ups, and I mean lots of weapons! I always bring all the weapons I find to the next stage. I’m sure many of you can relate to this as well. So, I bet you’ll like it when you find out that Wishmaster will be maxing out the benefits you could get from a weaponist playstyle... Because, as a spellcaster, he can carry multiple weapons at once with his magical ability!

Present Spellcaster: Korsi’vain A.K.A. Enchantress

If I had to confess, I would say that Enchantress has a more important place in me than any other Mayhem character. I find her design the most original among other heroes, and simple & vibrant color palettes like hers are an aesthetic I like to use on my personal drawings. Not only that, but she also carries a tiny bit of “me” in her design. It’s the little weirdo eye makeup I like to use; I had it on my first day at Hero Concept. 👁️
I know you guys hated playing against Enchantress in Mayhem Brawler when she was a boss. I took the Voivoda route most of the time I played because mejins are a complete pain in the butt. Teleport is quite a jerk move if you ask me. What about Enchantress’ giant spectral hand? No thanks. Or is it..? Well, that’s the enemy’s problem now, as we keep all those unnerving skills on our adorable mejin queen, now playable! And yes, by unnerving, I mean the infamous ranged grapple and teleportation!
Every question you may have about the story of Mayhem Brawler will be answered in the sequel. Don’t let your interest slip, my friends, because Wishmaster and Enchantress will show you something massive! 🙊

Let’s Meet ‘Em Up!

We’ve been working hard on the demo, and we all hope to meet you at this year’s Mobidictum (September 4-5) and Gaming Istanbul (September 22-24). Come to show your support & be the first to test our game. 😊
Also, join our Discord community server to hear first about the updates & share your suggestions with us!

Mayhem Brawler II Developer Diary 5: Big Guys

Beyond Color Swapping

Until the late 80s, the beat ’em up genre had secondary heroes with a color swap technique due to the limitations on the hardwares¹. However, Golden Axe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Final Fight, released consecutively in 1989, overcame this technological limitation and set the standard for characters to look different from each other.

I want to highlight one of the groundbreaking titles: Final Fight. This game introduced the iconic and influential character, Mike Haggar, who set a new standard for beat ’em up games, and he paved the way for the famous “Big Guys!”

The first things that come to my mind from the old times are; Mike Haggar from Final Fight (1989), Baby Head from Captain Commando (1991), Hawk from Vendetta (1991), Max Thunder from Streets of Rage 2 (1992), Colossus from X-Men (1992), Mess O’Bradovich from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (1993), Major Dutch Schaefer from Aliens vs. Predator (1994)

When we get closer to our current timeline, we have Ricardo from Fight’N Rage (2017), Connor from The Takeover (2019), Floyd Iraia from Streets of Rage 4 (2020), Dolphin from Mayhem Brawler (2021), Aros Helgason from Jitsu Squad (2022), Megadon from Dawn of Monsters (2022) and Miller from Final Vendetta (2022).

¹ One exception that comes to mind is Ninja Warrior from 1978.

Big Guys of Both Worlds

In my first Dev Diary, I mentioned that the game would follow two timelines with a 20-year gap. Additionally, I discussed including four playable characters in each timeline, a total of eight.

Stellar will be in the past, and She Wolf will be in the present timeline. These two characters will also take on all-rounder roles in their respective teams as a fighting style. If it’s your first time reading this news, click the link below for previous Dev Diaries.

Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds - Dev Diaries

This Dev Diary will focus on the role of grappler/tank Big Guys on both timelines.

Past Big Guy: Antonio “Apex Hunter” Petrozza

I have two reasons for choosing the Apex Hunter as my playable hunter, who embodies my evil uncle stereotype in the first game.

Firstly, She Wolf become the fan favorite unexpectedly. This led Christina and her uncle Antonio “Apex Hunter” Petrozza, to have a much more influential role in the story.

The second reason is our beloved Mayhem Brawler speedrunners. Because Chainfield Prison is the fastest route to the finish, Apex Hunter became the most-fought boss by far.

I could not ignore these! So, I added 20 years younger version of Apex Hunter to Stellar’s team as the big guy. I am sure many of you are curious about why such an asshole like Antoino Petrozza joined the legendary Stronghold officer Stellar’s team. With no spoilers, I can only say Apex Hunter was more of an anti-hero than a villain back in the day.

Apex Hunter is going to combine werewolf ferocity with the grappler fighting style. He excites me the most among the playable characters, to be honest.

Present Big Guy: Oliver “Beastmaster” Henderson

I can confess that I was trolling the story by adding a wereboar in a world full of charismatic werewolves and intimidating werecrocs.

Well, Beastmaster was famous for being one of the most avoided bosses in the first game.

The officers who played the first game will remember that Oliver, who has solid fan-boy potential, was a lackey of Lady Vermin. This time Oliver will diehard support She Wolf, the mayoral competitor for Mayhem City. WHAT!? Oh, did I forget to mention She Wolf’s nomination? It seems like you didn’t catch it on from her new outfit. ;)

The Beastmaster has a fighting style involving grappling, which he combines with slapstick movements that utilize his body weight. Of course, his loyal wild boars, Be and Bop, can also display some exciting special abilities with their contribution. Yeah, Be and Bop!

"HA! HA! HAA! Meet Be and Bop! Got the reference?"

Well, What About the Progress?

The game’s release has been delayed by six months due to the Witchcraft Update for Mayhem Brawler and our ongoing research and development for online gameplay for the sequel.

We are currently in a crunch for two expos we are preparing for, and we will show features as much as possible in the demo. Our team has plans to attend Mobidictum on September 4-5 and Gaming Istanbul on September 22-24. Of course, we will have a booth for Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds, and we invite everyone in Istanbul to join us.

Mayhem Brawler OST - New Tracks!

We all know a good soundtrack is integral to any beat 'em up. It helps the player to get involved with the game setting the tone of a particular level or warning the player that a Big Bad Boss is closer. And when the soundtrack is perfect, we want to listen to it everywhere. That's why we called the talented Emir Merzeci to compose the original 47 rocking tunes from the game for Mayhem Brawler. But, with our past updates, we also updated the game with two more tracks, one from the famous Air Supremacy trailer and the other is the newly added adrenaline-pumped Boss Rush.

We know that many of you were waiting to have both tracks outside the game, and we just did that. Both tracks are now available in the Mayhem Brawler OST, which you can find on Steam, so don't lose any more time and update your copy. You can get it right here if you don't own the OST yet.

See You Next Mission, Officers

With the Witchcraft update, we finished this part of our journey. Mayhem Brawler was released a little more than one year ago and we finally feel it is complete and reached its full potential. But of course, we want to do more! That’s why, as you may know, we are already working on a sequel: Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds, which will be our sole focus from now on.

So don’t forget to follow us on our social media to keep up to date with our next big release.

Mayhem Brawler Developer Diary 11: Witchcraft

We all know that you are eagerly expecting the upcoming release of Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds, and you can believe us when we say that we are much as excited as you are. The game is shaping up nicely, and we can’t wait to show you all what we’ve been up to… but this will have to wait a little bit. While you wait, we didn’t forget our first game and our promises to our fans! In April 2023, we will release a brand-new major update for Mayhem Brawler with an exciting new mode and a new playable character. It's called: Witchcraft!

New Playable Hero: Alley Witch

For those following the story, it will be no surprise that Nora Komar, aka Alley Witch, would become part of the team. After all, in the campaign, she became a bit of a snitch, helping our heroes to find clues that were vital to the case. Now fully converted, Nora will be joining the team and helping The Stronghold to save Mayhem City. And you know how it works, right? You did the same thing with She Wolf not so long ago. Just play the campaign mode with any character you want. After defeating her you will be presented with a choice: Arrest her or let her go. You want to let her go, and she will be available to play in any level or mode you want.

She will bring with her a new way to play the game. She’s capable of casting powerful magical blasts across the screen and hitting enemies far away from her

New Mode: Boss Mayhem

The fans asked and we listened! Mayhem Brawler will now feature a new play mode in the Witchcraft update! Here you will be facing all the big baddies from the game one after another. For that, we prepare a whole new scenario where this challenging fight will take place: Boss Mayhem. All you have to do to unlock it is beat the campaign mode on any difficulty. From there, you are free to pick your favorite hero and face the worst bandits Mayhem City has to offer, all in one go.

This won’t be an easy task, and only the most skilled Officers will be able to put them all in their places. Are you up for the challenge?

The Final Update?

It has been a long way since we first announced Mayhem Brawler, and it has been an amazing ride so far. Unfortunately, with the Witchcraft update, we are reaching the end of this journey, and Mayhem Brawler is finally completed! After three major updates that brought new characters, new modes, and everything else the majority of our fans asked for.

But, since "Everything is possible in Mayhem City", who knows what the future has in store for Mayhem Brawler?

Stay Tuned!

While this may be the final update for Mayhem Brawler, it does not mean that our story will end here. Mayhem Brawler 2: Best of Both Worlds is not that far away! We have a lot to show you in the coming months that we are sure you will love to see.

So, if you don’t want to miss anything, stay tuned to our social media! You can also join our Discord Group, so you can learn everything about what is in store for the future of Mayhem Brawler. See you soon, Officers!

Mayhem Brawler II Developer Diary 4: Character Concepts

Hello there! My name is Dilailah Beste Kuzu and I am the Character Concept Artist at HC HQ. In this new Developer Diary, we will talk about the super fun, yet fairly challenging, design process of our colorful characters.

Who is Dilailah?

I’m a 23-year-old self-taught 2D character artist who worked for several years as a freelance illustrator before I met Hero Concept. I’m such an indie game geek and a huge admirer of cartoons and animations, especially Disney, which influenced me a lot in finding my very own art style. Working as a character designer has been my dream job and I’m so glad that I achieved it so soon. Now, it’s been almost half a year since I became a part of the Hero Concept crew and it’s very exciting to be able to witness how much our game progressed in such a short period of time!

Adaptation Period

I must admit that my adaptation period wasn’t easy. The game already had its unique art style before I joined the developer’s team, and being a stylized artist it didn’t really help me there. It’s pretty difficult to abandon old habits, and I’m obviously still improving, but at the end of the day, I’m happy to be able to leave a mark on this project. It taught me a lot in less than half a year. I’m still publishing personal artworks on social media, but now that I realize even my own art has slight influences of Hero Concept in them. For demonstration, here’s a comparison of some Stellar portraits in Hero Concept style and in my style.

Difference of art styles.

Artstyle isn’t the only obstacle I’ve encountered though. The constructed anatomy and proportions for Mayhem Brawler II characters are pretty much diverse from what I’m used to drawing. I really like exaggerated proportions, cartoony body language, and distorted anatomy in order to highlight the expression. Here in this project, however, it’s more “comic book” than “cartoon”, so that was a bit of a challenge for me. But hey! I’m doing my best and the crew likes my work, so that’s a score!

Proportion and posture studies of the former concept artist.

“Were You Rushing or Were You Dragging?”

When you fail to empathize with the idea, the creative process can decelerate and become very stressful. To speak for myself, when I realize that I’m somewhat working slower than I used to do, I tend to rush things and I think it drastically reduces the quality and potential of the concept. That’s because in a small studio like this, when one single cog dragging may result in disrupting the whole development process, and because of that, you don't really have the chance to "take your time".

There were times –mostly in my first few months– that I couldn't nail a rather simple posture, wrinkles on a cloth, or sometimes even a face; which resulted in many hours of tries and corresponding demotivation for me. So honestly, I thought a few times that I was not suitable for a design job. Well, I do still have occasional difficulties with stylization and anatomy, but now at least I’m sure this is exactly the job that I would like to pursue. :)

Idle posture study for a weapon-wielding character which bothered me a lot.

Recycling Old Designs

As you know by now, what we’ve been working on for over a year is the sequel to Mayhem Brawler. Surely with way better-looking graphics and cooler characters! You will notice that some of the characters are based on designs that were formerly used in Mayhem Brawler. So what I basically do is study the previous concept, make it look more appealing, then adapt it into our new art style; and that’s what we call ‘recycling the design’. I’m dropping you a few examples so you tell the difference–and hopefully the improvement!

Some recycled character designs, before and after.

For some of you who may not have heard about it, the sequel game is going to take place in two different timelines. That means you will be also seeing some bosses of Mayhem Brawler once again in Mayhem Brawler II. Come to mention it, beware of the young and handsome Chainado!

Chainado 16 years before the incidents in Mayhem Brawler.

Does that mean we don't have any actual original characters? Why, of course we do! There are a total of 50 characters in Mayhem Brawler II: Best of Both Worlds, half of them are unique and brand-new! Moreover, we have 8 playable heroes this time, 5 of which I also worked in. Stay tuned for the future developer diaries, you'll meet them soon!

All in a Day’s Work

We all want one thing: to make our game look as good as in our minds. We’re more than a developer team, we are also friends that share a dream. And we do as best as we possibly can in order to serve you quality content. Of course, we don’t forget to have fun on the way! Speaking of fun, we’ll have a few surprises for you in the upcoming weeks. Follow us on social media to find them out. Oh, and don’t forget to check out our previous diaries if you haven’t already!

See you until then, Officer!
