I went from learning how to make a simple idle game to becoming one of the top paid Idle games in the genre in the span of a few years, which wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, the incredible & dedicated community.

I went from working by myself in my spare time, to now working alongside a team of 3 other full-time passionate and dedicated individuals to make the best experience possible.

Today, I’m extremely excited to announce the next chapter in our story - Melvor Idle 2.

What to expect in Melvor Idle 2?

Melvor Idle 2 is a direct sequel to Melvor Idle, with almost every single area upgraded or enhanced in some way when compared to the original.

We have taken everything we’ve learnt from Melvor Idle and cranked up the dial in hopes to create an experience that far surpasses the original. Melvor Idle 2 introduces brand new Skills, increases base game level caps, reworks existing Skills and completely updates the visual aesthetics to give a whole new look and feel.

I’ll go into detail about what to expect from the sequel.

What’s new in Melvor Idle 2?

Note 1: The below list details what the Full Release of Melvor Idle 2 will look like, after the Early Access period is finished.
Note 2: This information is taken from the Steam Store page and summarised for the purpose of this announcement.

  • A Brand-New Look and Feel: We have updated the graphics, enhanced visuals, animations, audio, and modernized the UI, all designed to make the game even more immersive and engaging. Some screenshots are available on the Steam Page linked above.
  • Maximum Level 120: Melvor Idle 2’s base game has a maximum level of 120 for every Skill, surpassing the original’s level 99 cap.
  • 29 Skills (5 brand new): The base game will include 29 Skills for you to train, including 5 brand new to Melvor Idle 2.
  • Quests & Storyline: Engaging story-driven quests will uncover the rich history of Melvor that guide you through your journey. You will face powerful Quest Bosses, train unique Skilling content, and help save Melvor from devastation along the way. You can follow the main storyline which will guide you through the game at your own pace, or tackle many side quests that will take you everywhere.
  • Day/Night Cycle & Weather: Enjoy a more immersive experience with a customisable dynamic day/night cycle & weather system that adds visual flavor and atmosphere to your adventure. This is a visual only system designed to make the game even more cozy.
  • Brand New Combat Mechanics: A familiar Combat system, now updated with new mechanics that increase strategic decision making.
  • Reworked Skill Mechanics: Many of the Skills you are familiar with have been either completely reworked, or updated to suit the new gameplay.
  • New Game Modes: Discover fresh ways to play with never-before-seen game modes tailored to challenge and entertain players of all skill levels.
  • Mastery Guilds: A completely reimagined Mastery system for all skills, including Combat.
  • Quality of Life: Detailed below, we’ve added many quality of life features to the game which will enhance the experience further.
  • And More! There will be a lot more to discuss in the future once development progresses!

Other Core Features of Melvor Idle 2

  • Singleplayer Gameplay: Enjoy an adventure crafted for you to play at your own pace.
  • Fully Moddable: Use the in-game mod manager to customize and expand your experience by downloading user-created mods.
  • Offline Progression: Continue progressing while offline at the same speed as when actively playing, ensuring you never miss out on growth.
  • Updated Bank/Inventory System: We’re adding lots of Quality of Life to the Banking and Equipment sections of the game to make it a lot easier to manage all of your items & gear.
  • Cross-Platform Cloud Saving: Play the same save on PC and mobile (when available) with integrated cloud-saving functionality.
  • Basic Social Features: We are introducing a Friends List, optional Cloud Profiles, and our own Presence feature which allows you to see how many other players around the world are doing the same action as you. Privacy options included.
  • Offline by Default: Melvor Idle 2’s client is offline by default. No waiting around for us to rework it and remove the online requirement!
  • Plus familiar features such as Pets, Achievements (Including Steam) and more!

Quality of Life Enhancements

Here’s some information about what QoL to expect in Melvor Idle 2. This list is not everything, only some notable ones:

  • Current Action Tracking: See all information about your hourly rates based on your current action. This includes Skill XP/hr, items used & gained/hr, Combat stats/hr and everything in between.
  • In-Game Codex: Your in-game repository for information on all content and mechanics. You will have the ability to search content, view information on their mechanics, see Item Uses & Sources and more. Always up to date, with plans to also support custom modded content.
  • Event Log: Tired of missing notifications for milestones, items, offline progression breakdown etc? You’ll now be able to view all notable events that occurred during your session.
  • Visible Drop Rates: Yep, you can see these now.
  • Updated Bank & Equipment Management: Placeholders, keyboard shortcuts, item tagging, Bank Tab names, Equipment set names, updated equipping menu from Combat itself, and more is being introduced to streamline this overwhelming area of the game.

Technical & Platform Stuff

  • Game Engine: Godot
  • Coding Language: C#
  • Release Platforms: Steam Early Access first, then eventual expansion to iOS, Android, and any other storefront requested (Epic, GoG, Itch etc).

For those that want a Web Version - we do too. Unfortunately as of today, Godot with C# does not support web builds. We very much expect this to become a reality in time as the engine updates. When this happens, we'll get started on providing a compatible Web version.

Monetization

For those who have been around for a while, you will know that we have strict preferences & values as to how a game should be monetized (See: Melvor Idle).

For the sequel, this is not changing at all. Melvor Idle 2 will have a single cost for the base game, with large content expansions being released to support the game far into the future.

For Melvor Idle 2, we believe in fair and enjoyable gameplay for everyone. That’s why the game will contain no microtransactions. Every player experiences the full base game without needing to spend extra money, ensuring a level playing field where progress and success are earned purely through your efforts.

How much will Melvor Idle 2 cost?

$14.99 USD

This price will remain the same upon full release.

Expansions

Following in the footsteps of Melvor Idle, we will be releasing regular massive expansions after full release to continue supporting the game for as long as possible.

The current plan for Expansions are as follows (How it works will be detailed at a later date):

  • Each expansion will increase the level cap, alongside story continuation via quests.
  • New content, Skills, Quests, and mechanics for all levels.
  • New permanent gamemodes.

We do not have a possible price for Expansions at this stage (Let’s get to full release first!).

Free Content Updates

After full release, we also have plans to release smaller content updates for free to everyone. As Expansions can take some time to develop and release, filling the time gap with new fresh content for everyone is something we'd like to achieve.

Why we decided on Singleplayer instead of Multiplayer

In the concepting phase for Melvor Idle 2, I researched the possibility of turning Melvor Idle 2 into a full multiplayer experience. That idea was ultimately scrapped in favour of retaining the core singleplayer experience found in the original.

To put it short - our preferred monetization strategy does not work for a multiplayer product. Introducing Multiplayer increases server & staff costs tenfold, increases staff requirements (server, moderation & anti-cheat), and puts a focus on “we need to meet this month’s costs” rather than “how do we make the next expansion amazing”. This means the game would need to have subscriptions, microtransactions, cosmetics, or some other form of continuous income.

On top of that, a multiplayer experience is simply not what Melvor Idle is about. We created a game where people can play and enjoy it at their own pace, rather than be constantly reminded of how far behind you are to those who started before you.

There’s plenty of great multiplayer Idle games out there with their unique spin on the genre. We will remain focused on creating the best singleplayer experience possible.

Localization Plans

We love our international audience, and you are an important (and also large!) part of our dedicated community. We've reached far across the globe into many countries I never expected, and I appreciate every single one of you that has joined us on this journey.

This section is to provide information on how we will support multiple languages for Melvor Idle 2.

Early Access will only support English (Officially)

Due to the ever-changing and fast-paced environment of Early Access, we will only be supporting English as the official language during this period.

Localizing content can take up to 8 weeks depending on how many changes there are. We have plans to update the game in early access on the regular, so adding language support is not viable and would only delay content or changes even more. This is the same process we followed with Melvor Idle during Early Access.

Official Localization near Full Release

As we near Full Release, we will implement official support for multiple languages. The languages that will be supported will closely resemble the ones that Melvor Idle currently supports.

Community Language Packs via Mod Manager

Something new to Melvor Idle 2 - we have plans to directly support community language packs that can be downloaded via the Mod Manager.

If there’s a language we do not officially support yet, the community will be able to create their own and upload it to our Mod Manager. This will be made available during Early Access as a feature of the mod manager.

Note that this will not replace official localization. Any official languages we support will be translated by a 3rd party and checked for quality prior to being officially added.

The Plan Moving Forward - News & Playtesting

This section details how you will learn more about the game, and how/when you may be able to dig in and get your hands dirty.

Patreon

Starting in the next week or so, we will begin posting regular news posts to Patreon (every 1-2 weeks) detailing many aspects of the game, and what the team has been up to since the last post.

Those who sign up to at least the Supporter tier will be able to see exactly where we are at with development in real time, and provide any and all feedback/suggestions while we work towards our Early Access Launch.

On top of this, the Elite Supporter Patreon tier and above will soon gain access to the current Alpha version of the game (via Steam). You will be able to play the game in its current state, provide feedback and suggestions, and help us make the best experience possible.

You can sign up to our Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/melvoridle

Free Playtesting via Steam

Those who do not wish to sign up to Patreon can look forward to free playtesting via Steam. Every few months, we will open the flood gates for everyone to come play the game in its current state for a limited time in an effort to get as much community feedback as possible before we launch in Early Access.

The idea behind the playtests is to ensure we can listen to everyone, and adjust based on the feedback we receive. We want to work alongside you all to create one of the best singleplayer idle games possible.

Playtesting will come with Surveys and News Posts to ensure we are gathering any and all feedback possible.

Steam Next Fest

Right before we release into Early Access, we will participate in Steam Next Fest. We are only allowed to participate in one, so it will be whichever one comes before our potential release date.

Public Newsposts

Every month or so, we will post an update for everyone detailing what has been achieved since we last spoke to you. These will be summarised from the regular update posts that Patreon receives detailing updates, progress, reworks, and adjustments based on feedback.

You can follow our news posts on the official news website: https://news.melvoridle.com/

Progress update on the Offline Client - Crossplay & Mobile

Hello everyone!

I thought it would be a good idea to provide an update on the progress of the Offline Client since we released it into Beta on Steam two months ago.

Crossplay Compatibility

In our Steam Beta announcement, we mentioned that content purchased on one platform (e.g., Steam) wouldn’t be accessible offline on another platform (e.g., Mobile). Based on your feedback, we’ve worked on a solution to address this.

I'm happy to say we are implementing a system that caches and validates your purchases for up to 30 days while offline. This timer resets each time you load the game with an internet connection.

This feature is the main reason the Offline Client hasn’t been fully released yet. We’re actively working on it and aim to have it ready for further testing and release in the coming weeks.

Mobile Progress

Development of the Android and iOS Offline Client is nearly complete—about 90% done—and will soon be ready for testing! We plan to share an iOS TestFlight link soon, so you can try it out even before Crossplay compatibility is finalised.

Anything else being worked on?

Yes! We’re also working on something big behind the scenes. Keep an eye on our socials over the next few months for an announcement.

Offline Client now available for Beta testing

The Offline Client is now available for public Beta testing. This brings full offline functionality to Melvor Idle, allowing you to play the game without an internet connection.

It is available to test on Windows, MacOS and Linux (including Steam Deck).

How to access

You can access the Beta test on Steam by using the Beta code offlineStage2.

Your saves are shared between the Live game and the Offline client. There are no actual changes to the game itself as it runs the existing Live version, just with offline functionality.

Important information about the Offline Client

There's a few important considerations to take note of.

1) You must first load the game once with an internet connection (Up to the character select screen).
This will automatically download and save the remaining requires files needed to function that were not bundled with Steam itself. This occurs silently in the background.

2) You cannot access your Cloud Saves or cross-platform purchases when in Offline mode.
If there is no internet connection available, the game will enter Offline mode. While in Offline mode, Cloud saves are not available and cross-platform purchases cannot be verified. It will default to purchase verification for the platform you are playing on.

This is due to these features requiring internet access to a 3rd party service.

The game will make it extremely clear when it is in Offline Mode.

3) The game will check for updates on load and automatically apply them without needing a client restart.
Everything is handled silently in the background. If you wish to not have the game update, you can disable its internet access via your respective OS settings or Firewall.

If there is no game update, it will use the local offline files to function with access to Cloud Saves and cross-platform purchases enabled.

Mods in Offline Mode

You can use and manage your Mod Profiles while in Offline mode. However, you cannot search/download new mods (as this requires an internet connection).

Any changes to your Mod profile while Offline will automatically attempt to syncronise with your Melvor Cloud account when loaded with an internet connection. If there is a conflict of mod profile changes, the game will ask you to confirm which Mod profile settings to use.

There is a chance some mods may not function in Offline mode and will require an update to do so (if possible).

Reporting Bugs with the Offline Client

If you run into any issues with the Offline Client on Steam, please report them to our Github and mark the platform as Steam (Offline Beta): https://github.com/MelvorIdle/melvoridle.github.io/issues

Offline Client for Epic Games and Mobile

Now that the primary offline client is setup and ready to go, we can now work to bring it to other platforms. Epic Games shouldn't be too far away, and mobile needs quite a bit of work to allow this to function due to quite a few restrictions we are running into.

Update Preview - v1.3.1 - New Realm Select, Bank Filters, ItA Balancing and more

Hello everyone!

It’s been a minute since I’ve provided an update on what we’re working on behind the scenes, so I thought now would be a good chance to give you a sneak peek at the upcoming v1.3.1 update (no ETA yet).

This update primarily focuses on Into the Abyss and addressing feedback we’ve received around it.

Important Notes

  • 98% of these changes relate to the Into the Abyss Expansion.
  • This update is not yet released, and there’s no ETA just yet. Once balancing and translations are finalised, we will release it.

    • I'd also like to release the Offline Client - Stage 2 at the same time as this update, so hopefully everything aligns and I can get everything out in one go.

  • The changes are not final, as we still have general balance changes and fixes to implement.

  • You can play the Beta of this update at https://melvoridle.com/beta/

    • It uses different saves, so just log into your Cloud account and import your live save.
    • DO NOT export from the Beta back into the Live game before the update is released publically. It won't work and will corrupt your save! You can do so once we release the update and the versions match (Eg. v1.3.1).

New Realm Select

One of the primary points of feedback comes around the Realm Select that was implemented, and how it works between Skills. It was a bit confusing or frustrating to be constantly navigating dropdowns to select your desired Realm and the content within.

We are introducing a new Realm select feature that separates Realms even more, and hopefully aligns more with how Realms ended up being implemented in the end.

Summary of Features:

  • Realm Select has moved from Skills themselves to the Sidebar
  • Added a new “Enter/Leave Abyssal Realm” button that controls the Realm for every Skill.
  • Skills no longer show their Realm select. Instead, they only show the content available in your current Realm.
  • Artisan Skills and Combat will only show categories for the Realm you are currently in.
  • If there are more than 2 available Realms, a new “Select Realm” dropdown in the sidebar will appear allowing you to select other Realms.
  • Entering/Exiting the Abyssal Realm will automatically change the sidebar to show/hide Abyssal Levels, AP, ASC and Soul Points.
  • Skills in the Sidebar will have a slight transparent style applied to them if it contains no content for the Realm you are currently inside.
  • Sidebar adjusts its style when inside the Abyssal Realm.
  • The Abyssal Realm will show as Locked in the sidebar, and clicking on it will display its unlock requirements.
  • Ability to swap back the “Legacy” Realm select from settings if you preferred that.

Enter/Leave Abyssal Realm

The sidebar now has a new “Enter/Leave Abyssal Realm” button that will control the Realm for every Skill including Combat. Clicking this option will change the Realm for every Skill, and will adjust menu options and available Skill content based on the Realm.

Select Realm Option

If other Realms are available, whether it be from Mods or the game itself, you’ll be able to select them from a new dropdown menu. This menu only appears if other Realms are available. If the Abyssal Realm is the only other Realm, then this option is hidden.

Bank Filters

The Bank is getting some predefined filters that will allow you to show/hide certain types of Items that you may not want to see. It’s only in a basic state at the moment, so options are limited for this release.

Using the Bank Search will adhere to your filters. If its hidden from the Bank, it will be hidden from the search.

Filters for everyone:

  • Ability to toggle visibility of items per Expansion.

Additional Filters for Into the Abyss (only shows if you have the Expansion loaded):

  • Show/Hide weapons that use Normal Damage/Abyssal Damage
  • Show/Hide equipment that has Damage Reduction/Abyssal Resistance.
  • Show/Hide items that modify Skill XP
  • Show/Hide items that modify Abyssal XP

Into the Abyss Recipe Costs

We’re making some of the recipe costs for Into the Abyss a lot nicer to train on:

  • Heavily reduced the costs to create Arrows, Javelins, Bolts and Crossbows in Fletching.
  • Removed one Item completely from the recipe cost of most Abyssal Rings & Amulets in Crafting
  • Reduced the quantity required of Abyssal Rings & Amulets required for upgraded version (II).
  • Removed the Ring/Amulet item requirement for Obzurian Rings & Amulets in Crafting.
  • Removed the Brumite Bar cost for Gloomite Gear in Smithing.
  • Removed the Gloomite Bar cost for Witherite Gear in Smithing.
  • Halved the Witherite Bar cost quantity for Netherite Gear in Smithing.

Into the Abyss Early-Mid XP Balancing

We’ve reworked the early to mid-game XP rates for Into the Abyss, allowing progression in the early stages to be a lot faster for most (not all) Non-Combat Skills. This will allow you to get into ItA content a bit faster than before.

Early game content sees double the XP rate, which scales downward until around Abyssal Level 30-35ish.

See the changelog below for a detailed run-down on the XP changes.

v1.3.1 Changelog as of 29 August 2024

*Not yet final, changes and bug fixes still to come

New

  • Implemented a new Realm Select. This appears in the sidebar instead of within Skills themselves.
  • Added an “Enter/Leave Abyssal Realm” option in the Sidebar, allowing you to easily enter/exit the Abyssal Realm. It will show as locked if not available.
  • Added “Select Realm” sidebar menu item that will appear if more than 2 visible Realms are available, allowing you to change Realms from here.
  • Skills with category selection (Like Artisan Skills) will now only display categories from the Realm you are currently in.
  • Combat will now only show Categories that contain at least 1 area from the Realm you are currently in.
  • Skills in the sidebar will now have a slightly transparent look if they contain no content for the Realm you are currently in.
  • The Abyssal Realm now applies a special theme to the Sidebar when inside.
  • Added a new Setting to re-enable the Legacy Realm selection for those who prefer that over the new one.
  • Added Bank Filters via a new icon next to the Bank Tab summary. This allows you to show/hide items based on some predefined filters. Those with Into the Abyss will see more filters than those who don’t own it.

General Changes

  • Abyssal Combat Areas are now called Abyssal Battlegrounds. Modifier descriptions have also been updated for the new name.
  • Abyssal Slayer Areas are now called Abyssal Slayer Regions. Modifier descriptions have also been updated for the new name.

Game Update - 15 August 2024

[ItA] = Into the Abyss only
[AoD] = Atlas of Discovery only
[TotH] = Throne of the Herald only

Update on Offline Client - Stage 2

We're still working on Stage 2 of the Offline Client which brings full offline functionality to the Desktop Clients (Stage 3 is Mobile). It's quite the task to undertake, but we're making good progress on it.

Stage 2 required us to completely rewrite how the game loads in order to achieve full offline functionality. It's a bunch of stuff you'll never notice or see when we actually release the update, but its something we have to do to make it work.

Stage 2 is probably the stage that takes the most amount of time. After we release it, we hope it won't be too much effort to bring it directly to Mobile as well.

Game Update

This update mostly focuses on fixing a lot of the outstanding bug reports and issues that have been present in the game.

New

  • Add passive cooking interval source tooltip to passive cook button
  • Equip requirements in View Item Info popup is now colour coded depending on whether the requirement is met or not.
  • Added clear option to reset Bank Tab icon to default.
  • It's now possible to force the game to refresh the associated Steam account that is linked to your Cloud account. To do so, click the "Steam" text on the character select screen and click the relevant option (the game will reload).

    • This option is only useful for those having troubles with the wrong Steam account being linked to their account.
    • This can only be done via the Steam Client.

Changes

  • We have converted every single SVG file to PNG, and replaced all instances in the game with the new image. The reasoning behind this is that SVG file are heavy to process, especially when there were over 700 of them being used in our game. Not sure if this will have an actual impact on performance, but it might.

    • This should also fix the icon colour issues seen on some Android devices running the non-Beta app.

  • Renamed "Normal Attack" (The attack itself) to "Regular Attack".
  • Replaced all instances of "perform a normal attack" with "perform a regular attack" (In attack descriptions).
  • Increase notification queue limit to 20 to fix some issues with notifications not displaying when many actions are performed at same time (like cutting 5 trees at once lol)
  • Aorpheats Signet Ring now provides +10% chance to double items in Thieving, up from +5%.
  • [ItA] Cooking & Farming menus with Realm selection will now automatically default to the Realm of the last selected Recipe/planted seed (not retroactive). This includes the Realm selection in the "Spend Mastery XP" and "Mastery Checkpoints" popup.
  • [ItA] Sanctuary, Divine Sanctuary, Ethereal Sanctuary, and Void Sanctuary will no longer degrade in Township.
  • [ItA] The unlock requirements tooltip for Realms will no longer display on hover/tap when the Realm is unlocked.
  • Removed the "Major update released" message on character selection screen.

Fixes

  • Adjusted interface loading process.

    • Also added significantly more logging in attempt to catch errors.

  • Reworked how the game distinguishes between Desktop and Mobile layouts. This should resolve a few UI issues on certain devices and screen sizes.

    • The game will now automatically swap from Desktop UI to Mobile UI (and vice versa) upon manual screen size adjustment without needing to reload.
    • iPad/Tablet screens should now display the Desktop UI to fit more elements on the screen (Depending on screen size)

  • Fix flatPotionCharges modifier not working for realm specific versions. This fixes the 95% Mastery Pool Checkpoint for Abyssal Herblore.

  • Fix Golbin Raid wave skip cost upgrade increasing cost instead of decreasing it.
  • Fix missing +/- on some item descriptions.
  • Hide "new milestones unlocked" section in level up popups if no new milestones unlocked.
  • Fix custom sell quantity not updating value automatically when sell mode is set to "All" or "All but 1" as more of that item is added to Bank.
  • Fix mobile spend mastery xp modal sticky element forcing the close button out of view when scrolling.
  • Fix issue in Township where 0/x built buildings (that have have been upgraded) don't lose efficiency, thus were not reducing the resource gain correctly.
  • Fix Summoning Attack Interval tooltip in Combat not displaying the actual interval based on modifiers.
  • Fix visual issue for Adventure Mode where Monster Selection did not display the accurate Monster HP value.
