Hey everyone! We're back with another patch for MonCon. Version 1.0.9 fixes a lot of user-reported bugs & bugs from our own backlog:
Cleaned up flaky logic surrounding Marnie's interview section of the afternoon chapter. In particular, there was a specific order of events that could cause the game to softlock if you talk to Marnie after the interviews, but before beginning Joey's first shadow work section; this has been fixed.
Improved NPC path-finding logic
Fixed bug where room music would not resume playing if you talk to a fuzzy in one of the hotel hallways
Fixed bug where NPCs could initially appear without costumes if you defeated first enemy in battle but then subsequently ran away
Fixed bug where camera would not return to default position when selling at a shopkeep after closing your inventory
Fixed bug where removing Fambox cartridge would simultaneously cause HUD menu to drop down when playing with a controller
Disabled phone/inventory interaction while inside the running section of shadow work
Added an autosave point after the end of the evening chapter's dungeon, but before the start of the after-midnight chapter of the game
Force capital letters on in-game keyboard when using gamepad in the second dungeon, or on the Duck Claw password screen
Don't allow player to repeatedly buy the same phone app, or buy smaller backpacks after increasing backpack size
Fixed graphical bug where colors would not immediately update in the third dungeon
Fixed graphical bug where player costumes would not immediately update in certain rooms in the third dungeon
v1.0.8
Hey everyone! It's time for another MonCon bugfix patch! We're getting very close to the end of our list of known serious bugs.
Here's what's been fixed this week:
Fixed bug where fighting multiple enemies and trying to run away with the self-pity ailment could crash the game
Fixed bug where opening an inventory in battle, using the phone to call another character, and then trying to re-open the original inventory could cause the game to crash
Fixed bug where assertive-personality characters can soft-lock the game by talking to you in the after-midnight section
Fixed gameplay bug where an item in the finale section was reachable through a collision wall
Fixed graphical bug where Zoey could appear twice onscreen during Marnie's interviews in the afternoon section
v1.0.7
Hey everyone! v1.0.7 of MonCon is here!
We'd received some feedback that some of the timings for the attack button patterns were a bit sloppy and didn't line up well with the music. This patch concentrates on tightening up all the attacks throughout the game, but we did our best to not fundamentally alter the experience we were going for with each attack.
Additionally, some of the attack button patterns were unnecessarily dense for easy mode (the only mode available right now). We've reserved the more complex button patterns for normal and hard modes, which will become available in future patches.
Thanks again to everyone for your support!
v1.0.6
Hey everyone! I didn't have as much time this week to address MonCon bugs, so there's still a few reported problems which are not addressed in this build. Nonetheless, please take a quick gander at what's new in this release!
Fixed a game-crashing bug during the final boss battle.
Fixed a bug that would prevent music from playing during the final chapter.
Fixed a variety of bugs related to the Marnie interview battle gauntlet in the afternoon chapter of the game.
Fixed some graphical bugs related to where Joey would position himself in certain rooms when saving the game.
Added an effect to the "Calm of the Whale" omamori that reduces the intensity of Marnie's angry dragon phases.
v1.0.5
We're back with another patch release for MonCon! We knocked out a lot of little bugs with this release, and also added a few minor QoL features:
Fixed bug where multiple second player ships could be created when playing Space Party minigame and returning from a Game Over
Fixed bug where consuming food/drink in battle would not alleviate appropriate ailments
Fixed bug where you could waste suitcase keys on already-unlocked suitcases
Fixed bug where NPCs could cause collision problems by overlapping the player's screen position while they're in the middle of saving the game
Fixed bug where NPCs could occasionally spawn on top of walls or other NPCs when a new room is loaded
Fixed bug where inventory cursor could end up one cell outside of the inventory while looking into a suitcase and swapping player inventories
Fixed bug where player would not be rewarded after the boss battle from the afternoon chapter of the game
Fixed controller bug that prevented D-pad from being used for player movement
Fixed a variety of bugs related to boss battles in the after-midnight chapter of the game
Fixed a variety of bugs related to suitcase loading in the latter half of the game (evening and after-midnight)
Fixed graphical bug where inventories and suitcases would flicker for one frame on the screen before sliding in
Fixed graphical bug where Marnie's confidence points would disappear after becoming angry dragon
Fixed graphical bug where inventory item descriptions could run off the screen during battles
Fixed graphical bug where shop UI would not extend for longer item names
Fixed graphical bug relating to forklift in second dungeon after saving the game and re-loading
Fixed graphical bug relating to missing zbuffer in third dungeon
Added gliding up/down movement to Bulletin Board app
Added more medium/low options for shaders
As always, thanks for your patience, and thanks for your help in finding these bugs!
v1.0.4
Hey everyone! Here comes another small patch for MonCon! As we continue to plow through our list of semi-serious known issues, here's what we got fixed this week:
- Various graphical & usability improvements for the Trading Expert phone app - this app should be much easier to navigate now! - Fixed bug where autosave file would keep unnecessary "cruft" from previous saves - Fixed a graphical bug in room 709 that occurs at the chapter boundary between evening and after-midnight - Graphics, text, and battle logic improvements to various boss battles in the after-midnight section of the game
v1.0.3
Hey everyone! It's time for the next MonCon bugfix! This patch gets us all caught up on issues reported by users:
Fixed game crash if any shop runs out of items
Fixed bug where Eye of the Eagle omamori wouldn't work if Masked Mystery enemy reveals itself in battle, or if an enemy calls for help
Fixed bug where Joey's battle sprite would start sliding diagonally across the screen if player's HP drops to zero during Karl's tutorial battle
Fixed bug that would prevent Run Boy speedrun leaderboard from updating during the afternoon in the Panel Room B
Fixed bug where spamming 'A' to try to get back into the Run Boy speedrun competition will occasionally prevent the speedrun timer from starting
Fixed bug where Owen can be repeatedly added to your team list if you keep re-entering the room where you find him (afternoon/evening sections only)
Fixed cutscene bug where Joey walks into the table and gets stuck after reuniting Owen with his mom in the afternoon section
Fixed controller bug where walking against walls could occasionally cause Joey to "teleport" to the other side of the room
The bug fixed in 1.0.2 (your list of teammates could get mangled under certain circumstances after getting Game Over) caused a variety of downstream problems that have also been fixed:
A game crash if you attend a panel
If you get overwhelmed after your party members leave, they still get reloaded into your party
If you go talk to one of your party members after the previous bug, you can get duplicate party members
Miscellaneous graphical cleanup
v1.0.2
Hey everyone! It's time for the next MonCon bugfix! This patch fixes a number of issues reported by users:
Fixed game crash if you talk to the Bravo Bus shopkeep more than once (caused by typo)
Fixed intermittent bug with how the team member list is saved / loaded if you get Game Over in a battle
Fixed display bug where Joey's name appears (instead of player's custom name) when selling items
Fixed display bug where certain battle ailments result in hidden button lanes if playing on a monitor resolution larger than MonCon's native 1080p
Made it more obvious that the player needs to hold (not press) the exit button in order to exit minigames
Thanks for all the bug reports - they've been super helpful! While I haven't had time to address everything that's been reported yet, rest assured it's all documented on my master bug backlog, and I'm marching down the list as fast as I can.
And last but not least, thanks for all the positive encouragement about the game so far! It really means a lot!
v1.0.1
Hey everyone! A few players have already found bugs (especially towards the end of the game), so I wanted to go ahead and push out a first patch today to get some of that resolved. Mild spoilers in the patch notes, so read at your own peril.
Fixed game crash in same after-midnight section if you have a particular character in your party
Fixed game crash if you use the attack menu scrollbar in the Contacts phone app, and then switch to another party member who doesn't have the scrollbar displayed
Fixed game crash if you use AAAAAA batteries without Marnie in your party
Fixed bug where you could get stuck on the third floor of the convention hall in the after-midnight section
Fixed bug where you could accidentally start the wrong cutscene in room 606 during the after-midnight section
Made collision detection more lenient for triggering a cutscene on the fifth floor of the hotel in the after-midnight section
Thanks for the bug reports! Hope everyone is enjoying the game so far!
MonCon Livestream + Q&A
During this livestream event, I'll be playing through the latest build of MonCon - showing off brand-new story content - and I'll be answering questions from anyone tuned in!
The Story
MonCon is the story of Joey, a young teenager struggling with social anxiety. Joey decides to attend one of the largest geek culture conventions in the world, in the hopes of meeting his hero - legendary game designer Mr. Miyashiro - and getting an autograph.
For Joey, a normal conversation feels like a fight to the death. Through his eyes, ordinary people transform into hideous monsters that must be verbally battled to survive.
But with the help of his newfound friends, Joey will start to overcome his social hang-ups, and learn that not everyone you meet is a monster.
