MOSS: BOOK II NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM

Polyarc announced that players with PC-tethered VR headsets can now continue Quill’s adventure in Moss: Book II via Steam for $29.99. Greeted by critical acclaim when released on PlayStation VR and Meta Quest 2 earlier this year, Moss: Book II is being hailed as a top contender for VR Game of the Year and has secured a spot on multiple essential and must-play lists.

The Steam release lets players with Index, Meta Rift, Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2 (with Quest Link), and HTC Vive among others, enjoy the title players have been raving about since its first release earlier this year. The original platinum-selling Moss can be picked up for $19.99.

Having rescued her uncle Argus, Quill’s adventure continues in Book II with the revelation that a winged tyrant is hunting her within the castle where her uncle was held captive. But Quill has a plan of her own, one that could finally end the merciless rule of the Arcane and save the world from a great unmaking. The journey will be difficult, but new allies, old friends, and the very nature of the castle itself can offer you help along the way.

While Book II picks up right where the story in Moss left off, Polyarc doubles down on what made the original Moss stand out, with a well-balanced mix of gameplay and emotional storytelling that leads players through triumph and heartbreak alike. Book II delves further into the history, scenery, and characters of Moss, while giving players more ways to interact, more tools to play with, and even more of the world to explore.

Award-winning composer Jason Graves, known for Dead Space and Tomb Raider, returns in this second installment of the Moss franchise. Graves’s compositions use small instruments in a big way to bring to life the Moss world and deepen your sense of immersion in the game. Joining Graves’s return is voice actor Morla Gorrondona, known for her work in Destiny, Call of Duty, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. In Book II, Gorrondona demonstrates her spectacular range as she once again voices the narrator and the individual characters in the game.

Oculus Menu Button Input Binding Change

To support an upcoming Oculus / SteamVR button compatibility change the button binding to bring up the game menu has moved from app button to the Y button on the left controller. This is because the app button on the left controller will soon be reserved for use as the system button on Oculus compatible controllers. Similarly, the recenter button binding is now holding down the left Y button for 1 second, instead of holding the left app button.

Crash fix for Intel Tiger Lake processors

There was a crash on launch for users running with Intel Tiger Lake processors. This was due to a bug in the OpenSSL code used in the 4.21 version of Unreal Engine (the version of UE4 that Moss shipped on). This was fixed in UE4.22. We folded in the updated SSL library into Moss. This appears to have fixed the issue for us locally, but do let us know if you are seeing a similar crash on launch:

Moss 2nd Anniversary

Two-years ago Moss transported players to a fantastical world and set them on an epic journey that turned into something more than they could have ever imagined. Along with immersing themselves in a captivating environment, a little mouse named Quill quickly captured their hearts, by not only becoming the mascot for VR, but becoming so much more … a friend, a companion.

Prior to launch, Quill introduced herself to tens of millions during the Sony PlayStation 2017 E3 press conference, raising the questions, what’s that game with the mouse? And why VR? Questions easily answered come the following February when Moss released to much acclaim on PSVR, and later Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows MR. And then as a launch title for Valve Index and Oculus Quest platforms.

When players time with Quill just wasn’t enough, we released an update to Moss, introducing players to Twilight Garden, bringing more than an hour worth of additional content that gives players a glimpse into the Sprite world rich with new challenges, combat and meaningful interactions for Quill and the player.

It’s not enough to simply say the bond formed between Quill and the player marked a significant discovery in the gaming space, that making meaningful connections with a character inside a game is possible. It’s more than that. Something magical happens when players meet, interact with and help Quill during their time together. They begin talking to her, caring for her, and empathizing with her as she experiences a range of emotions. She becomes real.

Now, with 80+ global industry awards and nominations and ranked as one of the top games across all platforms, Moss (and Quill) prove that an action adventure game set in both the first- and third-person perspective does work in VR. In fact, it not only works, it thrives.

While the game expanded with Twilight Garden and players relationships with Quill blossomed, Polyarc as a company grew as well. Now five years old, we’re 28 developers strong and continue to build upon the Moss franchise. We’ve even started a new project. More on that later. We’ve moved offices twice to give ourselves a little more space each time. Our regular office dog count has increased to five. And we’re growing the Polyarc family with two babies on the way.

But, all of this wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support we get from our beloved community. The fan art. The social media posts. The conversations at industry events. It’s what inspires us every day. To celebrate, we're hosting a limited-time 2nd Anniversary 34% OFF promotion for Moss. ENJOY!

Polyarc Expands the Story of Moss, Unlocks Portals to ‘Twilight Garden’ - Now 34% Off ($19.79) for a Limited Time

Starting today, we’re bringing the Twilight Garden — a free update and brand-new chapter of Moss — to the Steam community. That’s right, your favorite little mouse is ready to extend your adventure in her whimsical, fairytale world. And having launched Moss nearly a year-and-a-half ago, the Twilight Garden is an answer to every fan who can’t wait for more Moss.

The Twilight Garden is an all-new adventure that runs alongside Quill’s incredible journey through the original storyline of Moss — a complementary experience to the main game. This new chapter introduces additional environments, challenges, and story for new and returning players to experience.

So, really... what’s new? Well, first you’ll discover strange portals woven throughout the existing game. These magical gateways will transport you and Quill to the Twilight Garden, a place unlike any you’ve seen in Moss thus far. The strange and vibrant garden is adorned with Sprite artifacts, making it clear you’re somewhere special that is rarely (if ever…) visited by outsiders. Here you’ll reunite with the familiar toad character from your previous meeting with Rootseer Vada and the Sprites, and you’ll also encounter a mysterious presence that will prepare you for the dangers ahead.

The toad may not trust you at first, but there’s a good chance he’ll turn around as you best the challenges and prove your worth. And as you get to know him, you’ll realize he is alive, and players will have fun feeding him dragonflies, initiating a staring contest, annoying him, and ultimately departing with a cool fist bump.

And as a reward for overcoming the challenges within the garden, Quill will receive a new, magical gauntlet and armor set. With the new look, she’ll possess the ability to reveal hidden pathways, allowing her to traverse to areas otherwise unattainable.

Along with the new armor set, the guiding presence within the garden will gift Quill a new sword, allowing her to modify her attack style, making it more directional and allowing for rapid, successive attacks. With the new sword, you’ll observe that Quill’s attacks are more fluid, a testament to her growing skill in combat. In fact, this new weapon handling skillset transfers to Quill’s base sword as well. Enjoy!

Additionally, the sword offers more than a new directional attack style of combat, as you can empower Quill’s new sword with a magical energy charge which enables her to reach far away targets. We love this mechanic and can’t wait for you to try it out.

But, if you want to continue outside of the Twilight Garden with Quill’s signature green gauntlet and sword, we’ve given you the ability to equip Quill with your preferred weapon and armor. Now, players who enjoy using our screenshot mode (right-thumbstick-press while in the game menu) will be able to snap a picture of Quill with their preferred look!

We’re so thankful for you all and hope that with the release of the Twilight Garden, we’ve given you a reason to reexplore Quill’s world and renew your excitement for what is still yet to come.

Thank you.

Moss + Free Soundtrack Update

As a special thank you to fans, Polyarc is gifting the full Moss digital soundtrack to everyone who has purchased Moss by 8/17/2018.

Composed by two-time BAFTA award-winning composer Jason Graves, the soundtrack brings to life the melodic and playful adventure in Moss from the hero Quill’s perspective. Graves accomplishes this by employing small and intimate-sounding instruments composed, arranged, and produced in a pastoral soundscape with enchanting Waltz-esque flair.

The soundtrack consists of 11 in-game tracks with more than 57 minutes of music, including the bonus track “Home To Me,” featuring YouTube sensation Malukah.

Starting August 17, 2018, Polyarc will offer a Moss game + Moss Soundtrack bundle for $34.99.

Here’s how players who purchase Moss through August 17, 2018 can download the soundtrack for free:
Players will find the soundtrack in the DLC section of Moss as part of the game update hitting August 3, 2018. Everyone has until August 17, 2018 to download the MP3 files before the soundtrack is removed from the DLC section of the single game purchase.

Thank you and enjoy the music!

Moss 1.0.3 Update

Moss now officially supports Windows Mixed Reality headsets! We’ve also added a new Controls sub-menu which can be found within the Pause Menu. This sub-menu will allow you to reference your current controller layout as well as toggle between two new layouts.

The first layout option allows you to change the way movement controls. You can select between Touch-to-Move and Press-to-Move. The former is the layout we shipped Moss with. The latter requires you to press and hold as you move Quill through the environment. We’ve found this helps mitigate a handful of the ghost input issues players have been reporting.

The second layout option allows you to change the way your Jump and Attack actions are mapped. You can select between the Default layout of Attack/Jump on either side of the touch-pad or Dedicated Jump. The Dedicated Jump layout assigns Attack to the right-hand top menu button and utilizes the full touch-pad surface for Jump.

Both options are intended to alleviate issues players have been reported with the Vive wand touch pad. If you are one of the players that has had issues with the controls in Moss we’d love to hear any feedback you may have after trying them out.

In addition to these changes we’ve made a few quality of life fixes. Any action that potentially affects Save Data will provide context to what the action specifically does. We’ve also fixed the Spectator Screen to open at an appropriate window size. Lastly, we've made optimizations to how levels reload when respawning. Reload times are faster in these situations.

Vive Controls

Here is a reference image of our Vive controls mapping. Some helpful tips when using Vive:
--Using the tip of thumb works better than the whole thumb
--Vive touch pad does not detect touch or click consistently at the very edges
--Handedness is detected at controller startup so it may switch if turned off and on while in the game

We hear and appreciate everyone's feedback and are looking into ways to improve controller feel.

Moss 1.0.2 Hotfixes

We have pushed two updates (one yesterday, another today) to address some specific issues we've seen. The most important of these is an improvement to the responsiveness for climbing. The controls for climbing up or down are as follows:

The jump button (right hemi-circle of the right hand trackpad on Vive) is used both to climb up and climb down. The way that you indicate a climb down is to provide move input away (left trackpad on Vive) from the ledge and press jump. This should tell Quill to jump down.

And here are the patch notes!

1.0.1

  • Resolved issue where under some circumstances music would stop playing when returning from the system menu

1.0.2

  • Improved input consistency for Quill climbing up or down ledges
