NAL Is Alive

NAL Is Alive is alive

NAL Is Alive is alive

An update for NAL Is Alive is now out, which fixes the issues that prohibited the Launcher from working as intended.

NAL Is Alive now also contains five more games:

  • Gossamer Girls: a low-resolution procedurally generated dungeon crawler where you harvest silk from spiders and hunt down upgrades to keep yourself alive
  • Britskrieg: take control of four plucky Britons in a bid to take over the world at the behest of the Queen
  • Ink Idiom: the full version of the paid game, solve over 300 visual puzzles that lead to common idioms, sayings and turns of phrase
  • Rev%lver: take control of a gun with a weird habit of wasting ammunition if you answer percentage-based trivia questions too inaccurately
  • Jasmine Laslo – Switch U On: fall for an MLM music streaming service which only has one song available – the owner’s daughter’s – generating a million plays for her incessantly terrible song

The highscores are currently misbehaving, but I wanted to get a version out that AT LEAST makes the compilation work to a fundamental degree again.

I believe an apology is owed, as well. For the time NAL Is Alive took for me to create, it didn’t exactly set the world on fire (infact it lost us money through the fact I spent time on it and not on more fruitful things) so I definitely wasn’t enthusiastic to continue working on it. Unfortunately, working on it becomes a little more pressing when it decides it’s just going to up and die.

Fixing it has been exacerbated by a number of issues – the launcher’s file relies on a specific extension to actually run the games of NAL Is Alive, and for some reason, versions of GameMaker released since I last worked on NIA shot the extension dead. It is only thanks to the extremely helpful YellowAfterlife, and his extension that I found could swap it out without a world of hassle, for me being able to get the launcher working again THIS soon. (The error that broke the launcher in the first place was not the result of any update and I genuinely have no idea why it suddenly turned from “not existing” into “broadly problematic”.)

So I’m really sorry it’s taken this long. I’m writing this at 2:15am on a Saturday night (well, Sunday morning) resuscitating this dumb compilation, and I hope the few of you that care about it are now able to play it, enjoy it, and play around with it.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your patience, I don’t deserve any of you. If this kind of error ever happens again I’m going to hit it with a big stick and possibly cry or something.

May 24th Patch - Adds New Game "Super Fidget Spinner"

This patch adds a new game (well, it's more of a toy), Super Fidget Spinner. Very basic stuff, just poke the spinner and try to get it spinning as quickly as you can.

A bunch of very minor glitch fixes and tweaks are also present in this patch.

Apr 5th Patch

This small patch should fix the issue where games were being displayed twice in the Game Library.

Mar 23rd Patch - Adds 162 Unreleased, Unfinished & Tech Demo Projects

The latest version of NAL Is Alive is here, enabling "Pandora's Box", a collection of NAL's unreleased games, tech demos and unfinished projects.

Most of these are minuscule in size and few are truly playable, but in all, Pandora's Box contains 162 new things to try out. More tech demos will be added, along with a big handful of alpha, beta and pre-alpha versions of complete games.

There will also be extra information for each of the things in Pandora's Box added soon to improve sorting through the list.

Feb 2nd Patch

Happy February!

The latest update to NAL Is Alive includes the following:

RKF
- Game now runs in fullscreen and 1920x1080 resolution
- Added online highscores and statistics

RKF is a minimalistic arcade game in which your turret, with increasingly complex drum-based gunfire, must fend off waves of deadly black splodges.

And on the fixes side, one small one:

Laughter's Infectious:
- Highscores no longer reset themselves after each game

Jan 16th Patch

Features the following fixes:

[It Only Takes a Second]

- Upgrades the save system to the new one, so your stats will be reset (should be the only time this happens for this game)

- Speedrun mode now works

- Upgraded some textures, the game's lighting system, and some extra stuff, so the game looks a little cleaner now

[Laughter's Infectious]

- Upgrades the save system to the new one, so your stats will be reset (should be the only time this happens for this game)

- KNOWN BUG INTRODUCED: Game does not display your current highscore correctly. It does, however, store it correctly, the Launcher shows it, and highscores in Steam are unaffected, so this is a low priority fix

Jan 11th Patch

Now live, does the following:

Titan Tighten: If you complete the game and then play again immediately, your screw count will return to 0
Titan Tighten: Scores are now measured in milliseconds, not seconds
Terminal Velocity 2: Scores reset when you exit to menu and play again

PLEASE NOTE: Titan Tighten is the first (and currently only) game to receive an upgraded method of saving games; as a result, your progress for the game if you have already played it will be erased.

This is a change that will work its way through the entire library of games in NAL Is Alive over time, so please bear that in mind - it will only happen once for each game, and we'll note which games receive this change in patchnotes as it occurs. This does not affect Steam achievements, though - if you have earnt achievements for game completion, they will remain achieved.

Jan 6th Patch

This patch fixes the following issues:

Innoquous 4: Reflex not completable in Conditional
Innoquous 4: Possible crashes when levels are played in certain orders
[Potential] Innoquous 4: Some systems cannot complete Neil or Anticlimax X in Conditional
Japanese Infomercial: Score does not clear if you exit prematurely

Live now!

Jan 2nd 2017 Patch

Hey all, hope you've had a good holiday and a happy new year!

A new patch for NAL Is Alive is live now, which does the following:

- Fixes an issue with the time that Innoquous 4's completion trophies unlock
- Fixes the ordering of Innoquous 1's Speedrun leaderboard so that faster times are now better

It also adds FKR11, the latest in NAL's yearly FKR series, along with NIA leaderboards. For now, FKR11 is exclusive to NAL Is Alive - and the version released later on stand-alone will not have the online leaderboards of the NIA version, so you're getting the best version first!

Anyway, if you have any extra holidays off, we hope they serve you well. We're back to work now, so work on NIA is now officially resumed!

Dec 20th Patch

Small fix, this simply updates game highscores as you enter their "details" page on the Launcher. This should fix issues with people's names in the highscores appearing as "[unknown]".
