We hope everyone is having a great summer! Although we haven’t shared many updates recently, we've been working tirelessly on the game. As a two-person team, our resources are limited, and balancing game development with community engagement can be challenging, especially given the long hours we dedicate to development. Rest assured, we are more committed than ever to releasing Starfall Protocol in the foreseeable future. Our goal is to build stable systems and a solid foundation so that, together with our community, we can continue to make it even better!
Development Progress The development of Starfall Protocol has made significant strides over the past few months, bringing substantial improvements to various game systems. In today’s update, we are excited to share some of the highlights with you, including enhancements in environment generation, map size, the introduction of Z-Levels, and performance improvements. Since there are many things to talk about, we want to give you this update in two parts.
Environment Generation and Map Size Our goal from the start has been to create immersive, procedurally generated worlds where no two locations are the same. For this reason, biomes in Starfall Protocol emerge based on factors like the planet’s location, its planetary system, the host star’s attributes, and specific environmental elements such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric composition. This dynamic approach ensures gradual and sensible transitions between environments, both on the surface and underground, without clear borders.
This emergent nature extends underground, where depth becomes crucial in shaping flora, fauna, and resources. Verticality (Z-Levels) adds a new dimension to your exploration experience. Subterranean locations present distinct opportunities and challenges, requiring thorough preparation. Dangers such as poisonous gases, fissures, lava lakes, and temperatures add strategic complexity to your expeditions, turning each journey into a calculated risk with potentially great rewards. Both surface-level and underground realms are rich with exclusive resources and hidden treasures, essential for unlocking advanced technologies, crafting materials, or yielding substantial returns on the galactic market. Some structures, such as cave systems, may span multiple Z-Levels, offering a more immersive and interconnected exploration experience. The real question is, how deep do you dare to descend?
We’ve also greatly increased map sizes, enhancing immersion and expanding the diversity of exploration. Ecosystems in Starfall Protocol are teeming with unique life forms, with many lurking in the depths of planets, oceans, or asteroid belts—each filled with diverse environments and potentially undiscovered species.

Since our last update, we have been working tirelessly to optimize the core mechanics and enhance performance in anticipation of our game’s release. These improvements allow for larger colonies and more entities on the map. Specifically, we've implemented hierarchical pathfinding and refactored critical sections of our codebase to make them more data-oriented and efficient in utilizing CPU cache.

In this month's update, we're thrilled to delve deeper into the details of how modding will work in Starfall Protocol!
We want to make sure to provide everyone who wants to experiment with modding the opportunity to do so regardless of their skill level. Thus, we will offer three main approaches to mod the game: editing JSON objects, Lua scripting, and the use of our custom Starfall Protocol SDK. Through these tools, we aim to inspire the community to venture into new creative territories and expand on the Starfall Protocol universe.
📝JSON Editing and Expansion Whether you're a newcomer to the world of modding or an experienced creator, JSON objects strike an ideal balance between simplicity for beginners and robustness for veterans. They will enable you to effortlessly customize the gameplay experience by simply editing well-documented, human-readable properties in a text file (e.g., Armor = 5). In Starfall Protocol, JSON objects define and govern the game's entities—ranging from item stats and entity types to resources and even NPC behaviors. For example, modifying a JSON file could increase the prevalence of a scarce element, turning it into a vital part of your colony's economy, or introduce a new wall type to enhance your spaceship’s hull defenses against severe environmental conditions or enemy assaults. By adjusting or augmenting these files, you will have the power to tweak game mechanics, introduce new items, or alter the environment, offering a versatile and accessible means to customize the gaming experience.
🔵Lua Scripting Lua scripting elevates modding in Starfall Protocol to the next level with an accessible yet powerful approach. It's perfect for those of you looking to advance beyond basic modifications without delving into complex programming languages like C++. With Lua scripting, you will be able to implement custom behaviors and innovative game mechanics by hooking into the game’s event system.
💾Starfall Protocol SDK The Starfall Protocol SDK opens up the full scale of modding opportunities. A downloadable Unreal Engine 5 Starfall Protocol Mod Template project with our Starfall Protocol SDK will offer access to the game’s core systems, allowing for in-depth customizations and complex mods that surpass the capabilities of JSON and Lua scripting alone. This approach lets you utilize the full power of Unreal Engine’s Blueprint system and C++, expanding the core game types and leveraging an extensive API to craft your own gameplay mechanisms. Hopefully, this will serve as an ideal platform for exploring the limits of what mods can achieve in the game.
📚 Modding Resources & Support To ease your introduction to modding and enhance your skills as you progress, we're developing thorough modding guides, user-friendly templates, and detailed video tutorials. This will be an ongoing effort to provide easy access to high-quality information, simplifying your contributions to the Starfall Protocol universe.
🎮Mod Profiles If you are a player who wants to play with mods, you will be able to create, mix, and save custom Mod Profiles and define which aspects of specific mods you wish to influence your gameplay. This will not only allow you to completely customize your gameplay experience but hopefully will help in mitigating mod collisions.
