Night Spasm

Night Spasm Ver. 1.0.8.1 release!

Ver. 1.0.8.1

Chapter 2's development required a few game engine changes here and there, and now these changes are coming to Chapter 1! This update brings a few neat additions to the battle system, including a new negotiation mechanic. Why hurt your enemies when they can become your friend? Sure, you won't get any EXP, but perhaps the adventure is the friends we made along the way (not).

Anyway, here are the patch notes:

-Skills and items available in battle are now organized by their icon, allowing for much easier skill and item navigation in combat.

-All inflictions with durations now consistently disappear after the victim of the infliction has performed their skill. Being unable to perform a skill ticks the removal timer down by 1 after every skill of a turn has been performed.

-Escaping a battle is now considered “negotiating”, allowing players to ask for or give mercy to troops of enemies. The percent chance of avoiding a battle is based on the number of living party members versus alive enemies as well as an extra value based on the reputation of your colony.

-Updated the breathing animation of enemies.

It ain't much, but it's honest work. These features will make combat quicker and give players another strategy to win with, a much nicer and faster option at that.

Enjoy the update!

NIGHT SPASM 3 YEAR PRE-RELEASE ANIVERSERY Dev Log (#3) | Some news and such...

Hello Spasmers, Gideon here.

Can you believe Night Spasm was announced 3 years ago today?!?! May 15th, 2020 marked the day the Night Spasm store page was set up, about a year after the project was started in my potato of a computer. Since Night Spasm's release as a demo via Chapter 1, Chapter 1 has gone from a playable (yet underdeveloped) project demonstration to the fully-fledged starting chapter we have today. Now the base game of all future chapters, Night Spasm has become a project I'm proud to share. Heck, I was so scared of people thinking my project was weird that I didn't even tell my family about the project until 6 weeks before I announced the project to the public! Now I've had the honor of showing Night Spasm to the world and meeting hundreds of wonderful people throughout my career. ❤

It's been a while since I've posted something, so I figured now's the perfect time to give y'all an update regarding Chapter 2 and show you some cool things I've been doing either on my own or with the development team.

Night Spasm news

Chapter 2 status:

Development on Chapter 2 is slowing down a little bit, but this is actually a sign of how close we are to the final product. The development team consists of contract/commission workers and many resource contributors (artists, musicians, programmers, etc.) supporting Night Spasm out of their own interest. Most of the contract workers have finished their jobs and have been compensated accordingly, meaning all that's left for me to do is implement the resources, program what remains of the chapter, and eventually set up the Steam store for Chapter 2's grand arrival.

I absolutely can not WAIT to show you guys all the fun and challenging moments Chapter 2 has to offer! Assemble your colony folks... this is just the beginning of an adventure you'll never forget!

(PSST... if you want to hear some music featured in Chapter 2, visit my Soundcloud page!)

Website status:

Don't worry, we're getting there! We're just ensuring everything works as intended, from the Newsletter system to the rewards page (you might want to keep that one in mind).

For now, here are some snapshots of the site:

Oops, ignore that last image... I'm not too sure where I got that. What am I even looking at? Whatever.

The website will be up sooner than later. Making weird-looking websites are hard, ok?

OH AND BY THE WAY... The website will include a new blog page featuring all sorts of content such as behind-the-scenes stories, bits of advice about game development, leadership, and business, lore drops, and other random little things worth reading. The extra-relevant stuff will still be hosted through Steam, but I figured it would be easier to separate the news from the storytelling, you know? I hope you'll continue reading both my insights and my silly goober material.

Version 1.0.7.11 coming May 16th

There are a lot of new game mechanics coming to Chapter 2, as well as a lot of quality-of-life material. Upon developing some of Chapter 2's new features, I decided to apply some features to the actual game engine so both free-version and paid-version players can enjoy the optimized engine changes, which include the new quality-of-life features.

The update adds some other little content changes to Chapter 1 as well. Remember, Chapter 1 is a preview demo of the full game (Chapter 2 and above); Even though the Steam page considers the game fully released on May 15th, 2020, the TECHNICAL full release of the game is when Chapter 2 comes out. Don't worry, Chapter 1 will always be free, but after Chapter 2 is fully released, the only changes to Chapter 1 from that point will be any changes to the engine. Console editions of Night Spasm (should they ever exist), individual DLC expansions, and new language translations are the only exceptions.

Some other recent projects:

My presentation at S.O.U.R.C.E:

Recently, I've been extremely busy preparing to present two massive presentations at my college Central Washington University (CWU), one of which is for an event called SOURCE. I've been given the honor to present Night Spasm in front of a large group of students of all types of majors. There I will talk about the gameplay of the game and how developing a video game positively affected my career and personal life.

Interesting story, I used to be a Computer Science major due to my interest in game development (I had another game project and a massive fan project before I developed Night Spasm). But, as I truly got to experience leading a team and owning a business, I decided to major in Information Technology & Administrative Management (ITAM major). I realized that it is the designing and directing aspect I enjoy so much of game development, not the technical aspect. As the oldest of three younger siblings, I've always done my best to lead and help people in any way I can, and now I'm doing that through Night Spasm. I enjoy the creative arts and storytelling side of game development the most, especially music, being the music nerd that I am.

Anyway, I'm a little nervous, but it will be very fun. I will post my slides and script on the store page after the event is over.

"Cat Tank" event:

Have you ever seen that one TV show where business owners present their business idea to a bunch of investors? The show known as Shark Tank? Yeh, I'm doing that... kinda...

I'm competing in a knock-off version of Shark Tank called Cat Tank, also happening at my college. I came up with an idea for a new product that could actually become a reality someday. Who knows. All I know is you can't predict the future, but you can shape it with enough sweat, ambition, and medium-sized iced mocha coffees from Burger King (caffeine doesn't affect me anyway, but they're very tasty).

While I can't provide the script and slides for this presentation, I can drop the logo here with no context!

I really like the color orange, don't I? I don't even like oranges.

Well, that's about it. A nice brief dev log I'll forget I wrote in like 2 hours. Expect the update tomorrow and have fun messing around finding those extra secrets I added. Patch notes will arrive shortly!

Night Spasm: Chapter 2 soundtrack preview now live!

Head on over to our Soundcloud page to hear 24 featured music tracks coming to Chapter 2!

We've been excited ALL YEAR to show you guys what's coming to Chapter 2! Let's kick it off light yet fun with a few music previews, available on our Soundcloud page!

Find them here!

I think it's safe to say... music is our favorite part of developing Night Spasm! I've been blessed with such a wonderful crew willing to put their time into making music for Night Spasm! Whether they've hand-made us a song specifically for the game or they've proudly let us use their music for anything we want, each composer (all solo freelancers by the way) established the tone we want Night Spasm to give off. If it weren't for their creative musical masterpieces, the rest of us here at FanFaction probably would've lost our ways trying to figure out the feel of Night Spasm's world. The soundtrack is our guidance for storytelling. When we come up with a new character interaction or a battle scene, we make it our priority to connect the scenario to a music track. Sometimes we reference a song we've already used, or maybe we make a whole new song just to establish the concept to its roots!

In honor of our composers, I'd like to thank each composer who stuck with us from the beginning:

-CrimsonSkyfall
-Xstep
-AZALI
-Astrogamer54
-And of course, let's not forget-... Oops! I'm not supposed to mention them yet... 😏

Thank you all for making our jobs easier. Back when I first directed the project, I was worried I had to compose the entire soundtrack myself! While I was glad to do so at the time, nothing I make could compare to the unique tracks brought by the music team! So thank you, musicians, for setting the stage!

[Confetti noises 🎉]

Oh, and don't forget... We're hosting a Night Spasm Kickstarter/Sweepstakes event soon! If you want to hear more of these wonderful songs earlier, be sure to support us!

That's all for now! Thank you for reading, and enjoy the music!

Your feedback and support are greatly appreciated. Keep those keyboards and controllers busy!

Night Spasm Ver. 1.0.8.0 release | Quality-of-Life Update (+ more news!)

Ver. 1.0.8.0 | The Quality-of-Life Update

Do you hear that? It's the voice of the Community, our favorite sound! A sound FAR better than the winter jingle bells for sure!

Today we've come to bring you an early present! Night Spasm version 1.0.8.0 is out now! The Quality-of-Life Update features numerous... well, features, but with a touch of fan feedback following along. We'd send you some eggnog as well, but UPS doesn't like delivering perishable foods.

Because Chapter 1 serves as a BETA/demo of the full game yet to come, we're surprised how many people treat this like a full game. Sure, it's a fully functioning game as it is, but this is just the beginning! Chapter 1 started as an early-access beta to raise funding; It soon turned into a free demo not too long ago. Since then, we've taken every little opinion from the growing community to further improve Night Spasm's future. We're very thankful for the community engagement we've received throughout development, and because of that, we're nearing the TRUE START of Night Spasm (more about that after the patch notes).

For now, we've got yet another update to polish Night Spasm before the big advertisement campaign! Here are the patch notes:

Ver. 1.0.8.0

-Added a terminology and symbol guide, providing details about certain stats and game mechanics! [Recommended by -Camera Insect- via the Night Spasm Steam Community]

-Added a “retry battle” feature, where you can immediately restart a failed battle straight from the game over scene! Due to this new feature, you can no longer use a timestamp before a battle.

-Added a new and improved crafting system! A new “Crafting” option will appear in your FAD menu, allowing you to cook, brew, and construct various items and equipment, so long as you have the proper ingredients, the correct tools, and the crafting recipe in your “Recipes” section. You even gain bonus EXP when crafting equipment!

-You can now see the chance of hitting an enemy from the “view stats” option in combat.

-Removed the bestiary menu. It wasn’t very popular, so we’ve made way for a new system coming up in Chapter 2. Most enemy information is viewable in battle anyway.

-Compressed Mode will now activate at the start of the game by default. Returning players can choose to turn it off.

-Player and enemy ATK bonuses now pass on to other battles.

-Changed the game over graphic.

-Reverted Inevit’s graphic back to its original design, with a few polishes.

-Party members will now regain HP after battles. The amount varies based on the remaining amount of BD the enemy had by the end of the battle.

-You can now see the UC value of party members from the FAD menu.

-Increased the contrast of every battle background, making battles more vibrant and easier to see in dark areas.

-Added a sound effect when escaping a battle.

-Enemies from random encounters now retain the enemy BD pool from the previous battle.

-Most boss fights are now immune to freezing and sleeping inflictions.

-Frozen, sleeping, binded, and mystified characters will no longer block or counterattack unless their EVA/CNT rates were above 100 beforehand.

-Dead party members now receive EXP after a battle.

-Greatly reduced the prices of Ingene’s data books.

Where did this update come from, you might ask? Couldn't tell ya. These updates kind of just appear out of nowhere. Must have been Santa Clause or something.

Speaking of jolly gift-giving, there's something else you should know...

Night Spasm Chapter 2 Kickstarter/Sweepstakes Event

Don't forget, we have a Night Spasm Kickstarter/Sweepstakes Event happening sometime in late 2022 or early 2023! Help fund the development of Chapter 2 and beyond in exchange for various prizes such as early access, music previews, a few t-shirts here and there... oh, and there's a custom funko pop for the top donator!

Follow the Night Spasm Steam Community for more news on that, or click one of the links down below!

Music previews coming Wednesday, December 14th 2022!

Earlier this month, we said we were going to release some of Chapter 2's music on Soundcloud. Tomorrow is the day! Drop in to hear a few boss themes, new character themes, and music from TWO NEW REGIONS coming to Chapter 2! Oh, and don't forget: if we reach our Kickstarter goal, we'll release some additional tracks. The titles may give you an idea of what's to come... 😉

Looking for talented musicians and artists seeking to make a debut

If you are a musician, pixel artist, and/or concept artist looking to make a debut, let's help each other out! We've helped many contributors grow their musical careers this year, including familiar composers like AZALIand Astrogamer45, who's music will be featured in Chapter 2!

That's all for now! Thank you for reading, and enjoy the new update! Merry Christmas!

Chapter 2 Kickstarter event happening soon + Chapter 2 music previews?!?!

Hello, all you spicey gamers, Gideon here!

The Night Spasm Donation Program

In the near future, we're going to release the Night Spasm Donation Program, a Kickstarter event where you can donate to us to receive special perks, such as a Steam key for Chapter 2, special Discord roles, early access WITH your Chapter 2 Steam key, and even... a Night Spasm Funk Pop perhaps?!?!

Who could it be?? If we reach our Kickstarter goal, it will be given to the top donator; custom box included! And that's not the only reward, because the further the funding goes beyond the pledged amount, the more we'll giveaway!

We will announce the date for the Kickstarter as soon as it's prepared. We don't want to rush it, and just know that the longer it takes, the better we'll have to offer. As we've recently hit the 15,000 downloads mark, we're going to repay that support the best we can! And speaking of which...

Chapter 2 Soundtrack preview coming soon!

Due to spoilers, it's hard for us to show you guys and gals what we're up to... so how about we release a couple of songs on Soundcloud with vague titles and no context about the song's purpose whatsoever? This is your chance, theorists!

We're not sure which ones and how many we're going to release, but one thing is for sure! If we hit the Kickstarter goal, we'll release some of the JUICY tracks as well! We'll even continue updating the Soundcloud page with more songs depending on how much funding we get!

That's all we've got for now! Well, we MAY have an update just about ready to release, and we MAY have a website in development... but that's for another time! For now, consider following the Night Spasm Steam Community page and our Discord server! Links are down below!

Night Spasm Ver. 1.0.7.9 release!

Ver. 1.0.7.9

Now you might be thinking, "how could Night Spasm get any better???" You may also be thinking, "Hmm, I still need to take a lunch break..."

Wherever your brain-train might be, another update is here! With the sudden uprise of fan-made Night Spasm content going around, we've collected a few requests and bug reports that deserve to be implemented. We're ALWAYS looking to suit the needs of new players, veteran players, and our fellow Streamers/YouTubers. This update does just that!

Behold, the patch notes:

-Added the “Compressed Mode” for new players! Compressed Mode can be enabled when starting a new game, which shortens the dialog for those who don’t care for the smaller details and for content creators ready to get into the game. Speedrunners might enjoy this feature too!

-Added enemy randomization! After completing Region A1, all enemy troops will now contain random enemies! No more repetitive battles, each after-math encounter is unique and challenging! Other areas of the game have randomized enemies as well.

-Removed the ability to skip a party member’s turn using the arrow keys. This is because new players kept accidentally skipping beneficial turns.

-Fixed a glitch in the DLC room that caused players to spawn into a wall. This only happened to players who entered the left, top, or far-right rooms first. [Submitted by BlackDragonFN on our Discord]

-Fixed a glitch in the Title Screen that allowed the menu arrow to move freely after watching the credits (perhaps this will be an easter egg one day?). [Submitted by BlackDragonFN on our Discord]

As you can see, we've added a few features for all three categories of players. For those doing Night Spasm videos and/or streams, Compressed Mode is highly recommended!

That's all for now! Thank you all for your support, especially those who have joined the Night Spasm Discord server (which you can find below 👀).
