Nuts

NUTS is out!

Hey everyone, Joon here, one of the developers.

I just wanted to make a quick update, to say thank you, and to list a few cool reviews that appeared, in case anybody wants to know why they should play NUTS :)

So first of all, if you're reading this and you bought the game, thank you so much! I never thought this many people would enjoy our experimental squirrel adventure, but here we are! People are playing, and finishing it, which means a lot to me and the rest of the team.

And here are some cool things:

🌟 Over 100 people have streamed NUTS on Twitch!
The game has a page that combines them all, right here.
I do warn you, if you haven't played, or finished the game, there are a lot of spoilers in these streams so be careful. You don't need anybody else to answer the question "what are the squirrels up to" but yourself!

🌟 Vice Games reviewed NUTS
“Its visual puzzles remain modest where other games might have leaned into spiralling recursiveness; it asks questions rather than offering definitive answers. To cap it off, the game ends on a note of genuine cosmic weirdness, an opportunity for both I and the squirrels to finally escape the camera’s all-seeing eye.”

🌟 Danish music blog Soundvenue, called us a Lynchian fever-dream

🌟 Rock Paper Shotgun had a mixed response, but still said nice things!
“Without a hint of hyperbole, sound designer Almut Schwacke (who also did a solid turn as the voice of Nina) has produced some of the best foley work I’ve ever heard.”

🌟 “Like Firewatch for David Attenborough fans”
Gerald Lynch, TechRadar

🌟 “Dazzling artistic presentation”
Mike Towndrow, Six One Indie

🌟 “It’s a testament of what can be made when working remotely”
Simon Cardy, IGN

etc... etc...

There's many more, and hopefully more to come.
Now I'll go back to bugfixing for a while.

Stay tuned, and tell your friends about NUTS :)

- joon

Features and Fixes

Hey everyone, thank you so much for all the love and reviews so far. We are thrilled with the reception, and want to keep making the game better in response to community feedback.

This patch includes

  • [feature] - Some streamers with Ultrawide monitors requested a way to play in windowed mode. It can be found in the settings menu.
  • [feature] - Added keyboard redundancies for AZERTY keyboards (Q/A and Z/W are the same), and an alternate way to use the handheld devices: you can use H to cycle handhelds if you can't use alphanumerics.
  • [bugfix] - Dutch language had a few changes to soft-lock (e.g. Player can't hang up phone) in a few places., caused by the localization entries not having exact matches of line-count. I built a safety check and also combed over the localization file and pulled out all the offending entries. Shouldn't happen again!
  • [bugfix] - The fax achievement was broken, and is now fixed! Sorry about this.
  • [bugfix] - Fixed bug that places camera out of bounds and makes you unable to pick it up again.

NUTS: Coming to Steam REAL SOON!

Hello there squirrel fans,

After a successful January launch on Apple Arcade, we’re delighted to be bringing NUTS to your eyeballs on February 4th 2021! We’ve come a long, long, LONG way since our demo version, and we’re so excited for you to get embroiled in the mysteries of Melmoth Forest.

We think it’s a pretty neat game. But don’t take our word for it! Since we’ve been out on Apple Arcade for a week now, we’ve gathered a few press reviews. Here are some of the words that’ve been bringing tears to our little eyes:

“I finished Nuts a few days ago and I still want to go back”
Christian Donlon, Eurogamer

“Without a hint of hyperbole, sound designer Almut Schwacke (who also did a solid turn as the voice of Nina) has produced some of the best foley work I’ve ever heard.”
Nate Crowley, Rock Paper Shotgun

“NUTS feels like a great exemplar of the fact that developers don’t need to give players lots of things to do, when they can instead give you one thing that is incredible.”
Sean Martin, Pocket Tactics

“Like Firewatch for David Attenborough fans”
Gerald Lynch, TechRadar

“Dazzling artistic presentation”
Mike Towndrow, Six One Indie

“It’s a testament of what can be made when working remotely”
Simon Cardy, IGN

Sounds good? Check out our trailer below… and see you in Melmoth Forest on the 4th!

Squirrel Quiz + Let's Play

Play the NUTS demo and wishlist us!

In this demo, you'll get to play a beta-version of the first level of the game.
Jump right into the action and the story of NUTS. It should take you about 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

NUTS is a mystery adventure about surveilling a community of wild and mischievous squirrels, deep in the woods.

NUTS grew from an experiment about watching and tracking squirrels using remote recordings. The game plays creatively with the player's gaze, splitting it between the character's eyes and various recording devices, and turns the simple act of looking into a series of careful framing decisions. To play NUTS is to care about perspective, sight-lines, timing and framing in a unique way.

The story tackles important contemporary themes - while the setting is natural and peaceful, it interrogates modern technological mediation and urban existence with topics including abuse of power, environmentalism and corruption.

The stylized graphics and minimal color palettes complement a realist audio treatment, using foley and voice acting.

The demo is part of the Steam Festival and the Guerrilla Collective showcase, which means it'll be available from June 13th until June 22nd. Enjoy!

NUTS is made by a small, remote team of experienced indies. The code is made in Reykjavik, the trees are planted in Montreal, the books are written in Copenhagen and the foley is recorded in Berlin.
