We're back, and we bring with us a rejuvenated Collection Log that will help you keep your stash nice
and organised! Plus, more poll changes are rolling in, and we're giving you an opportunity to brush up on your Kourend and Kebos lore just in time for A Kingdom Divided. Read on to see what's in store in the latest update... naked moles and all.

Collection Log Improvements

The Collection Log now has its very own Search function to help you quickly find your stuff! Get typing to instantly see all the lovely items you've acquired.

Plus, the Log has the following new features:

  • A new counter shows the total number of unique items obtained (check the top of the Log to feel smug).
  • Added a togglable chat/popup notification when a new item has been added to the collection log.
  • The colour of each section of the Log changes based on its completed status. Nifty!
  • Different boss modes now have separate kill counts on their respective interfaces (DKs, Corrupted Gauntlet, CM CoX).
  • Gnome Restaurant has a delivery count at the top of its section that will start at zero for everyone when the update goes live.

Other additional items have also been added to the Log as follows:

  • Volcanic Mine Rewards have been added (in their own Volcanic Mine section).
  • Third Age and Gilded items can now be found in the "Rares" tabs for each Clue Scroll.
  • A Brimhaven Agility section has been added to the minigames tab.
  • Pirate Hook has been moved from Underwater Agility to the Brimhaven Agility section
  • Merfolk Trident has been added to the Misc section
  • Mark of Grace has moved to the Rooftop Agility section (these will be proactively unlocked if you had any before the update and will account for the amount of marks spent on each Graceful set you have purchased).
  • Third Age pieces now have their own separate tab.

Poll 74

Collection Log aside, the last few changes from Poll 74 are also being released with today's update:

  • Theatre of Blood has gained an additional reward chest just opposite the Bank booths, that allows you to obtain any loot they forgot to claim after defeating Lady Verzik Vitur herself! You will still need to complete the full raid, and any unique drops that would normally be announced to the rest of the raiding party will still be broadcast, even if you were offline before seeing the chest yourself. Players will not be able to re-enter the Theatre if they have unclaimed rewards from the chest, but there is a discard option (don't worry, there's a warning for this too).
  • Use a mole claw on the Giant Mole pet and it will lose its fur and become pink! Apply a mole skin to grow the fur back.
  • The Abyssal Sire will no longer deal damage with a Miasma attack after it has died.
  • For 500 coins, Watson now offers a blueprint that allows you to build a STASH tracker in your Player Owned House within your Study on the wall chart space. To get building, you will need the blueprints, a Bolt of Cloth and 40 Construction.

Postbag From The Swamp: Submit Your Questions!

With the upcoming release of A Kingdom Divided, we’d like to take the opportunity to answer your burning questions about the Kourend and Kebos lore. We’ve dusted off Postie Pete, set him up with a fetching pair of galoshes (not sure how he’ll wear them, mind), and given him the addresses of several notable NPCs – so all that’s left now is for YOU to ask the questions!

You may address your questions to any NPC in the Kourend and Kebos regions and post them in this Reddit Thread or in our Official Forums.

Stuck for inspiration? The Old School Wiki has an archive of all the previous issues of Postbag from the Hedge! Ooh, we’re feeling all nostalgic.

Other News

Whilst we continue to investigate reports of the Scrying Pool and Portal Nexus not working as intended, "Scry" mode will now reveal how many players are in a specific location.

This is a temporary solution and we expect to release a permanent fix in the future that returns it to its full functionality as it was before.

PvP World Rota

The PvP world rota has moved to Period A:

  • The host for the High Risk PvP world will be W343 (Germany)
  • The host for the Standard PvP world will be W324 (US West)
  • The host for the free-to-play PvP world will be W417 (US East)
  • The members-only LMS world will be W333 (UK)
  • The free-to-play LMS world will be W469 (US East)

As previously stated, the PvP World rota will change weekly, along with every game update.

Smaller Changes

  • We have reduced the timer in the Tempoross lobby from 60 to 30 seconds.
  • The Bracelet of Clay now works correctly with the Mining Cape and Celestial Ring effects.
  • A stile has been added to the Rellekka mine, allowing multiple people to enter and exit at the same time following completion of the Fremennik Trials.
  • The shades of Mort'ton coffins have been adjusted to prevent graphical issues with shields.
  • Some jagged terrain in the Kharidian Desert, west of the Shantay Pass, has been smoothed out.
  • The Strung Rabbit Foot Necklace now slightly increases the chance of nests containing an egg or ring when emptying a bird house.
  • Some grammar has been corrected in the Herblore level-up messages.
  • The Tome of Water can now appear in the Skill Guide and level-up messages.
  • The imbued Rings of Wealth are no longer prioritised so highly for protection on death, since they downgrade even when protected.
  • The option text for the brightness control in the Settings side-panel now refers to brightness, rather than music volume.
  • The boss and Slayer kill logs no longer output code debugging messages when opened.

That's everything for this week's game update! We'd love to hear your feedback so please let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel.

Poll 75 Suggestions and Wilderness Survey

No Game Update

As we explained last week, we're prepping for the upcoming long public holiday weekend, so there will not be a game update today.

But never fear - we'll be back on Wednesday April 7th at 11:30 BST with Collection Log improvements and more Poll 74 changes!

Today we're hosting one last livestream before the break. We'll take you on an Eastdoor Event playthrough and you can show us how smart you are with the Very Fishy Quiz (all thanks to Tempoross). Join us at 16:30 BST over on Twitch!

Poll 75 Suggestions

Our next big poll is on the horizon, and this time we'll be tackling PvM improvements! You should expect a poll blog detailing all of the potential changes in late April.

We'd love you to share any ideas for changes that could sneak into the blog before the poll goes live in-game. Visit any of the relevant social posts and tell us what you'd like to see in Poll 75!

Wilderness Changes Survey

In preparation for the upcoming Wilderness Changes project, we're eager to hear your thoughts on all aspects of the Wilderness experience.

We've prepared a short survey that covers the general Wilderness, the Revenant Cave and the Wilderness Slayer Caves! We really appreciate your feedback as we build towards the project, which is due to start in May. Find the survey here.

Art Competition - Finalists Revealed!

A massive thank you to everyone who submitted entries for the #OSRSDesignAHat competition! We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of creativity. Truly... hats off.

Alas, there could only be four finalists. After much discussion and an internal vote, we are delighted to reveal the final four...

Option 1: Banana Wizard's Hat

Option 2: Banana Sunhat

Option 3: Crabanana

Option 4: Yellow Duck Hat

Voting opens today and runs until Tuesday, April 6th. You can visit your nearest in-game poll booth or simply cast your vote through your Account Settings menu! We'll announce the winner in next week's newspost. Good luck to the four finalists!

That's everything we wanted to share with you this week. We'd love to hear your feedback so please let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel.

Equipment Rebalance: Next Steps

We’d like to apologise for the recent silence on the issue of Equipment Rebalancing. We know it’s something many of you are still thinking about, and work has continued on the project behind-the-scenes - so it’s definitely time to get the conversation going again!

As we’ve discussed more than once on these pages, a Rebalance is clearly needed in order to curb any risk of powercreep and to ensure the long-term health of the game – which is something that’s really important for all of us. But we do realise that our previous approach had its problems, and thanks to your plentiful feedback, we’ve reflected on those.

So today we’re going to talk about how we’re ‘rebalancing’ our approach to get this all moving again.

OUT WITH THE OLD…

When we first pitched Equipment Rebalance, our plan was to zip through the required changes in one fell swoop.

We were keen to get Combat Achievements up and running and knew that the rebalancing was needed first, so we packed all of the buffs and nerfs together. In retrospect, it's clear that this was a mistake, and ultimately ended up lengthening the feedback process. There were so many individual moving parts to consider, but the entire discussion was essentially consumed by a small number of key equipment changes.

Additionally, while we promised to fill the equipment gaps created by the changes eventually, nerfing items without making clear when they would be replaced understandably made some players nervous. That’s totally fair. By trying to deliver everything in one batch, our approach became a little ‘all or nothing’ and some important considerations were missed.

We also think our Rebalance surveys were too broad. When we ask the community about very general concepts, the feedback doesn't really reflect how you all feel about more specific problems. And when it comes down to it, the specifics are what counts, right?

We should have also shared more of the data used for rebalancing calculations, which we think would have inspired more confidence in the project. And it’s essential that you to feel confident in us and believe that we’re striving to improve your experiences in the wonderful world of Gielinor – because that’s never not the case.

… AND IN WITH THE NEW

So, onwards? Here’s how we’re now approaching the Rebalance, step by step:

Release schedule

We’ll be splitting equipment rebalancing into four releases, allowing each aspect of the project a bit more room to breathe. This should give us all a bit more thinking space and allow all of us the time needed to talk things through and get them right.

Changes Coming Soon!

Many of our proposed changes were well received and we want to release them as soon as possible – within the next month, to be exact. These will be unpolled but are as they were originally outlined:

  • Rebalancing of plate armour, spears, maces, hastae and warhammers.
  • Basilisk Knights losing the special attack, although it will be retained by the Sentinals where it will no longer being broken by auto-retaliate.
  • Removing the Prayer bonus from the Twisted Bow.
  • Dragonbone Necklace/Bonecrusher Necklace changes (tweaked stats, new equip requirements and removal of the activation delay).

Ranged Meta Changes

We want to tackle this issue before Combat Achievements is released, which we hope will be by the end of June. Crucially, this stage includes the proposed changes to the Toxic Blowpipe and Crystal armour.

This time around we’re going to come at things from a different angle, with more focus on your feedback as we fine-tune the plan. There are definitely issues with the current meta, and together we’ll figure out a solution for these.

Look out for a blog in the near future!

PvP Changes

This is something for later in the year as part of our upcoming Wilderness changes project, which is expected to be released sometime in July. It will include adjustments to the Dragonhide armour and the Dinh's Bulwark.

In the coming weeks we’ll be sending out a series of Wilderness and PvP related surveys to help us understand how you feel regarding various issues we’d like to tackle in the Wilderness Changes project, so keep an eye on your Message Centre, the news section of the website, and our social media platforms for more information!

Tier Rebalancing

Tiers will be addressed last, though we do still intend for it to happen this year. Although there was a lot of community support for this work, and it's something the team feel passionately about, there is currently no clear solution for pure accounts built specifically with the tier 75 meta in mind - aside from introducing new weapons in the gaps created. We want to get this right, but this is not as urgent as some of the other problems.

Player Suggestions

Lastly, we're aware there were many other ideas for buffs or nerfs which our previous Equipment Rebalancing plans did not address. We definitely want to re-open the floor for discussion, and that's something we'll aim for once we've got through this initial batch of changes. If there’s one thing we found the first time around, it’s that having too many discussion points at once is not the best approach and we'd like to spend the time to properly consider your feedback on any further changes!

We hope this all sounds promising! As always, let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel!

Fishing Skill Boss And Easter - Old School RuneScape Weekly Update (24/03/21)

We're delighted to see so many of you enjoying Tempoross! We've been swimming through vast oceans of feedback and the following changes have now been implemented.

Today's Hotfix (26th March)

[expand type="details"]

[th]Your Feedback[/th][th]Our Actions[/th]

We’re removing some of the less desirable fish from the reward table entirely, so you are given valuable fish more often.

We're reducing the chance to receive some low value items such as nails, feathers and bait, but increasing the stack size when you do receive them.

We're increasing the chance to receive all types of fish you can obtain from the reward table.

We’re slightly increasing the number of Soaked Pages you can obtain.

We're changing the Reward Permit cap on Ultimate Ironmen from 10 to 8,000.

[/expand]

While some changes will be live in-game via a hotfix today, we've been seeing plenty of other feedback regarding Tempoross. We'd like to take a little more time to investigate some of the main points, which are listed below, before we commit to any further changes. It's likely that any further updates to Tempoross after today's hotfix will not go live until our next game update on Wednesday, April 7th.

Player Feedback and Future Changes (26th March)

[expand type="details"]
[th]Your Feedback[/th][th]Our Actions[/th]

Successfully subduing Tempoross within 1 cycle of its phases feels unrewarding and provides less points than if you were to intentionally make the encounter last longer. We didn’t anticipate that Tempoross would be defeated so quickly! We’ll be closely monitoring how often this occurs and will make adjustments where necessary once we’ve been able to review the data.

There’s sentiment that the XP rates provided in the blog are unachievable, and that the overall amount of XP provided should be increased given that the activity is more click-intensive than traditional Fishing.Tempoross is not meant to be a replacement for traditional Fishing. We don't want to stop everyone from Fishing around Gielinor as that adds life and character to the world!
You can get more XP by sacrificing reward points, but we want the encounter to feel like it’s worth the effort you’re putting in. We’re currently monitoring XP gains and will adjust them accordingly once we’ve received more data.

The Tome of Water does not increase the effectiveness of Curse spells.Although the increased accuracy of Curse and Bind spells was polled, the strength of Curse spells was unfortunately missed out from the blog. We’ll look to include this in a future poll - the blog will be with you very soon!

Game clients are crashing when playing alongside larger groups of players during the Tempoross encounter. We have found that this issue is exclusively for iPhone users and we are actively looking into a solution.
Game Update Changes

The downtime with this week's game update will last slightly longer than usual to enable our engine team to perform some necessary work. We expect the downtime to be around an hour, based on previous similar scenarios.

We'll also be taking the game offline at 11:00 GMT on Thursday March 25th for essential work related to recent login issues. Assuming all goes well, we don't expect the game to be offline for much more than a couple of hours. There will be an hour countdown beginning at 10:00 GMT to ensure you have plenty of notice.

As the team starts to unwind ahead of the Easter public holidays, there will be no game update next week. Our usual weekly update schedule returns on Wednesday April 7th.

Fishing Skill Boss

ATTENTION ALL SKILLED FISHERFOLK: We, The Spirit Anglers, need your help!

For generations, seafarers told legends of the ocean coming to life; waters amassing into colossal shifting forms that whip the waves into a raging storm. Perhaps you have heard of the Spirit of the Sea? Maybe you have been told that this Spirit is simply a guardian of the oceans, fending off those who disrespect its waters and wildlife. Others would call it a wicked and vengeful god, wantonly tearing ships apart for its sport.

They are not just stories. Tempoross, the Spirit of the Sea, is back. Much remains unknown, but our research suggests that it could be as old as Gielinor itself. After lying dormant for centuries, the beast has finally awoken.

While we seek to understand the reasons behind this sudden resurgence, there are more pressing concerns. The Spirit is coalescing once again in the seas around Al Kharid. We are The Spirit Anglers - a band of hardy heroes of the waves who pledge to keep the storm subdued!

The time is now! Join us and save the seas!

Tempoross Overview

Tempoross is an all-new, fun and sociable way to train Fishing. Available to all members with at least level 35 Fishing, we're aiming for an accessible, social encounter as an alternative to the current hands-off levelling methods. You can tackle the Spirit of the Sea on your own or in a group, as Tempoross will scale to your team's size. This encounter complements existing Fishing methods and the current meta, and is not a replacement.

XP rates scale based on your Fishing level. For players with levels between 35-70, this offers some of the best Fishing XP available in the game, albeit at the cost of receiving fewer fish - and being a more intensive process. Here's a breakdown of the approximate experience rates you should expect:

  • 35 Fishing - 30,000 XP per hour
  • 70 Fishing - 70,000 XP per hour
  • 99 Fishing - 80,000 XP per hour

We'll be monitoring feedback and XP/point gains after release, and we are open to adjusting these values in future.

There will also be themed worlds for Tempoross where you can find other crew-mates for your voyage!

  • US: World 422
  • EU: World 463
  • UK: World 341
  • AUS: World 531

Tempoross Location

A few weeks ago, fisherfolk from Al Kharid were out to sea when a swelling storm blackened the sky. As the waves became fierce and the fog thickened, the horrified fisherfolk witnessed a great figure with empty, glowing eyes that seemed to be formed of the very ocean itself. It took all of their combined sailing skill to battle the storm and scramble back to the safety of Al Kharid. Once safely ashore, the fisherfolk rushed straight to Chancellor Hassan to relay the events. Greatly concerned by their testimony, the Chancellor appointed them to investigate further.

The fisherfolk were sent to the Ruins of Unkah, on the west coast of the Kharidian Desert. Here they established a base of operations. This group became known as the Spirit Anglers.

Ready to become an honorary Spirit Angler? Talk to Ferryman Sathwood, just south of the Al Kharid bank. He will ferry you between Unkah and the Sea Spirit Dock:

The Ruins of Unkah and the Sea Spirit Dock, located in the Kharidian Desert

The Ruins themselves are worth exploring - here you'll find a Bank, scoreboard, fishing supplies shop, and even meet a retired sailor NPC here can trade in unwanted rewards for Soaked Pages (more on them later). You can also exit the Ruins here and head into the desert, but you will need a shanty pass - you can buy one at the gates.

Once ready to battle on the high seas, players must face Tempoross between two boats. Each boat has two cannons, so you'll want your crew spread evenly between them. Fishing spots will spawn on the north and south sides of the island, and you'll need to dash around catching fish - they're ammunition for your cannons!

The layout of the Tempoross encounter.

Tempoross Encounter

Tempoross rises from the sea!

The Sea Spirit is a tempestuous beast, with two phases of attack. Before heading out, speak to Captain Pudi on the Sea Spirit Dock - she will give you an outline of the fight and key tactics.

Tempoross has three important stats to keep an eye on:

  • Energy: Behaves like regenerating armour and is reduced in phase one.
  • Essence: Behaves like Health and is reduced in phase two.
  • Storm Intensity: Phase one failure timer. You must reduce its Energy before this reaches 100%!

Phase One: Storm

"Beneath the surface, the glowing Spirit Fish swarmed together, exploding forth into a colossal, watery form."

Core Loop: Gathering and Loading

To defeat the awakened spirit, you must gather Harpoonfish and load them into your cannons to launch at Tempoross. Raw Harpoonfish can be caught in several locations around the island, using a - need we say it? - harpoon. Once you've collected enough fish, head back to the ship and fire them from the cannons to start dealing damage to Tempoross!

Captain Ahab could have used these!

Like fishing, loading cannons is a progressive action, and one cannon alone is not enough. Your team will need to work together to keep as many cannons running optimally!

Raw Harpoonfish are sufficient for dealing with the boss. However, sacrificing a bit of time to cook Harpoonfish will harden them, dealing even more damage!

Harpoonfish are friends, not food!

Using either a Dragon or Crystal Harpoon will give better catch rates. The latter also gives a 1/3 chance of catching crystallised Harpoonfish, which will earn you some extra XP. The Infernal Harpoon's passive Cooking effect will also apply, offering a 1/3 chance of Harpoonfish being cooked as you fish!

Adding Layers: Attacks

Players must remain wary of Tempoross' attacks. These shake up the core loop, keeping the playing space dynamic and forcing players to stay on their toes. We've opted for attacks that hinder mobility and resource-hoarding as opposed to causing damage, as we don't want hoarding food to be the solution. This means Tempoross is considered a safe activity and is accessible to a wider group of players, including those with accounts focused purely on skilling.

Wave Attack

Tempoross will occasionally unleash a huge, 360-degree wave that covers the entire area. You'll need to tether yourself to masts or totem poles with a rope to avoid being swept away.

When tethered, the wave will pass over you without any effect. You cannot move but can tether/untether freely. If a wave hits an untethered player it will knock them away from Tempoross and they will lose some fish and a random tool (hammer, rope, or empty/full bucket).

The wave also has a chance of breaking each mast and totem pole. If this happens, you'll need to repair them with a hammer before the next wave hits.

Tempoross unleashes a mighty wave against its foes!

Lightning Attack

Watch out for Lightning strikes! The tile they hit and the area around it will ignite, and in some cases this can block off pathways. Also, be careful not to stumble into the fires or you'll lose fish and tools to the flames! The good news is that fires can be put out with buckets of water. They'll also be put out by the above mentioned wave attack - that's not such good news, though...

Clouds are summoned to strike the player down!

Torrent Attack

Tempoross will target cannons with water torrents. This doesn't break them, but stops you from firing fish temporarily. If you are standing next to a cannon's ammo crate during a hit, you'll be shocked in place for a few seconds.

Cannons that have been struck by a Torrent Attack.

Storm Intensity

During phase one, the intensity of the storm will continuously increase. Tempoross will attack with more frequency and power, and break the masts more often. Keep those cannons firing, though - if intensity reaches 100% your party will be forced to retreat until the storm subsides!

Phase Two: Coalesce

"An intense whirlpool swirls as the colossal form submerges, drawing in the dispersed Spirit Fish..."

If you successfully reduce Tempoross' Energy to zero before the storm gets too intense, it will submerge, triggering phase two.

Can you defeat the Spirit of the Sea?

While submerged, Tempoross draws in the fish you scattered in phase one to regain its energy. The storm will subside during this time, so this is your chance to get in close and disperse the energised fish, reducing Tempoross' total Essence. Once Essence is fully depleted, your watery foe won't be able to regain energy and will retreat for a longer period, leaving the seas safe until it can surface again. If Tempoross' energy reaches 100% before you deplete its Essence, it will resurface and phase one will start again.

It'll take roughly two to three phase cycles to fully subdue Tempoross. Work hard as a team, and you'll finally defeat the Spirit of the Sea!

Scores and Rewards

Scoreboard

After the fight, the scoreboard near the Sea Spirit Dock will show your personal best time, personal completions and the global best time and completion. You'll also be able to see how many rewards you fished out of the reward pool (see below). There is no player time given at the moment, but this is something we would like to add in future.

Reward Pool

For your prize, head to the reward pool, at the beach near the Sea Spirit Dock. The pool will always contain some resources, but if you successfully subdue Tempoross, you'll receive extra - and have a chance to trade points for unique rewards! If you fail the encounter, you will lose any points you earned during that attempt. Points will be protected with a Bank PIN that players will only need to use once per session.

Normal and Ironmen can store a maximum of 8,000 reward chances in the pool and Ultimate Ironmen currently have a maximum of 10. We applaud anyone who can resist the temptation to loot the pools before they're completely full!

You'll also receive a selection of noted fish based on your Fishing level, plus small amounts of other resources such as planks. You have a chance to get a new casket reward, with a selection of useful items! These are also stackable like clue caskets.

You will need a net (big or small) to fish out of the reward pool. Not got one to hand? You can nab one from the nearby spirit angler sitting by the pool!

Spirit Flakes

Spirit Flakes are a common reward found in the pools of debris They are fish food infused with the energy of Tempoross itself! They are an untradeable resource that provide a 50% chance of catching an extra fish for no additional XP. This effect stacks with Rada's Blessing, and the flakes can be used on any type of fish (although not on Harpoonfish within the Tempoross encounter). They appear in the collection log with a maximum collection number of 65,535.

Fish Barrel

The Fish Barrel can store a total of 28 raw fish of multiple species. Fish can only be removed from the barrel at a Bank, similar to the Looting Bag. You can combine the Fish Barrel with the Fish Sack to create an equipable version of the Fish Barrel that can be worn in the cape slot. Sounds tempting? The Fish Sack can be purchased for 1,000 molch pearls from Alry the Angler on Molch Island.

The Fish Barrel is untradeable and is fairly rare. If you have the Barrel on your person during a PvM death below level 20 Wilderness it will drop to the gravestone and the contents are kept. If you suffer a PvM death above level 20 Wilderness, or a PvP death, the Barrel will be destroyed. The item value will be dropped to the gravestone and its contents wiped.

Tackle Box

The Tackle Box provides additional storage for fishing equipment including rods, feathers, bait and the Angler's outfit. This saves on Bank space and improves organisation.

You're able to effectively store up to 2,147,483,647 of most pieces of fishing equipment. Exceptions to this are the charged variants of the Infernal and Crystal Harpoons - you can only store one each.

The Tackle Box is untradeable and is fairly rare.

Spirit Angler's Outfit Style

Take pieces of the Angler's outfit and a large amount of Spirit Flakes to Gita Prymes, east of the Sea Spirit Dock, to transform it into a Spirit Angler's outfit piece! This alternative style for the Angler's outfit has the same stats and Fishing XP bonus. It can be converted back to the standard Angler's style for free by speaking to the same NPC.

Players fortunate enough to have gathered the full Spirit Angler's outfit will find it very useful in their endeavours against Tempoross. The full kit functions as a rope when tethering to masts and totem poles! This saves you an inventory slot and ensures you don't lose your rope when the waves hit.

Harpoonfish Trophy

While fishing in the pools of debris, you may happen upon a rather spectacular aquatic specimen. A fish so fine that it would be worthy of stuffing and mounting onto a wooden board in your Player Owned House...

The Fish Trophy is untradeable and a rare reward. You'll need at least 66 construction and two teak planks.

Tome of Water and Soaked Pages

Requiring level 50 Magic to equip, the Tome of Water is a new offhand magic item similar to the Tome of Fire. Water spells are weak compared to their fire alternatives, so the goal of this item is less about raw damage and more about utility. With the increased accuracy of Curse and Binding spells when wielding the Tome of Water, we want it to feel reliable and worth an item switch. Time to make a splash!

Add Soaked Pages to the Tome of Water and it will become charged. The effects while wielding the charged Tome are as follows:

  • Unlimited Water Runes
  • Standard Spellbook Water, Curse and Binding spell accuracy is increased by 20%
  • Standard Spellbook Water spell damage is increased by 20%

Water Combat spells, Curse and Binding spells will consume one charge. Using the Tome of Water with Ancient Magicks will provide unlimited Water Runes but will not use charges from the Tome, as these spells do not have any added benefit, as per the previous Poll.

The uncharged Tome of Water and the Soaked Pages will be tradeable, but the charged Tome of Water will be untradeable. The Tome of Water is a rare reward whilst the Soaked Pages are somewhat uncommon. It will be possible to exchange a Tome of Water for 25 Soaked Pages, should you find yourself having too many tomes and not enough pages.

Tempoross Pet and Heron Pet Recolour

You will have a very rare chance of obtaining a unique pet from the reward pool. The very fitting Tiny Tempor is a scaled-down version of Tempoross itself! Adorable...

Although you won't be able to obtain the Heron pet from Tempoross, you can recolour one you already own to match the Great Blue Heron for a bargainous 3,000 Spirit Flakes! Return the Heron back to its regular self by using any raw fish on it, plus one Spirit Flake.

Feeding the Heron different types of fish may result in some new dialogue. We'll leave it to you to figure out which types...

Dragon Harpoon

You have a rare chance to gain the Dragon Harpoon from battling Tempoross. This means all account types now have a chance to acquire Dragon Harpoon outside Combat experiences!

Happy Easter... Sort Of

Gregg the Rabbit is a bit fed up with things. Easter comes around, and he's thrust into the limelight once again. He's tired of being the centre of attention, so with your help, he's going to do everything he can to make Easter about something completely different. Introducing: Eastdoor!

Gregg the Rabbit getting ready for Eastdoor!

If you're able to help out our bunny friend, you'll be rewarded with your very own Eastdoor - perfect for impromptu knock-knock jokes, classic sketch comedy and general obstructionism. But what's this peeking over the top? Why, it's the other reward - Gilienor's finest propeller hat! Note: manual propulsion is required.

No license needed for this hat!

Shooting Stars

Shooting Stars should now deplete more slowly when large groups are mining them.

Cannons can once again be placed where a Shooting Star would land. However, if a Star lands on it, it will be destroyed and will need to be reclaimed from Nulodion.

There is now a chance you might receive additional stardust when mining Shooting Stars.

PvP World Rota

Thank you to everyone that participated in our recent PvP World Rota survey. After looking at your feedback we are going to be trialling a new method. Starting with the usual rotation on next week's game update, we will then change the rota weekly, instead of every two weeks.

We will continue to monitor your feedback regarding the rota, including the latest changes and your ideas for the future. If you haven't participated in our survey yet click here.

Rule Clarification

We've made a slight change to the options in the Report Abuse interface. We'll be updating the 'Buying or selling an account' report option to 'Buying/selling accounts and services'. This can be used to highlight players who are advertising this activity in-game.

You can find out more about the change in our Rules Clarification - Account Services newspost from yesterday.

Smaller Changes

Pharaoh's Sceptre now has scaling drop rates depending on the room its chest/sarcophagus is located.

Floor 1: 1/3500
Floor 2: 1/2250
Floor 3: 1/1250
Floor 4: 1/750
Floor 5+: 1/650

This is to stop bots farming level one chests with very low stats. The expected hours for a sceptre is now higher at a lower end, but lower at the high end.

Master Farmers' drop tables for herb seeds now scale with Farming level. This is to stop bots using Master Farmers with very low stats. Herb seeds will now be worse below 71 farming and better above 71 farming.

The PvP safe zone has been increased for the Mount Quidamortem area.

With last week's Zealot items change, we found the wrong cost was changed. We've amended that with this update and Zealot robes will now protect over all bones.

Other Fixes:

  • The notional value of graceful items has been increased. They're now more likely to be protected on death over other items, and more likely to trigger the warning about dropping valuable items.
  • The leeches of Morytania have been updated to apply their stat-drains to the more recent skills - Farming, Construction and Hunter.
  • The account creation screen once again offers the full choice of boot colours and skin colours, omitting only those options that need unlocking specially.
  • Players will no longer find all their metamorphic dust consumed by using it on an olmlet. A new message informs them if they have previously unlocked the metamorphosis ability.
  • Quest points are now correctly awarded when Priest in Peril becomes complete, even if the player does not subsequently receive Drezel's warning about the perils of Morytania.
  • A misplaced tree has been moved out of the path near Burgh de Rott.
  • A typo has been fixed in Prifddinas.

That's everything for this week's game update. We'd love to hear your feedback so please let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel.

Rules Clarification - Account Services

The integrity of our game is paramount to us. A lot of Old School's charm and appeal comes from just how impactful in-game achievements are. We know you're extremely proud of your accomplishments, and we want to keep it that way. You work hard for your 99s, and that shouldn't be undermined. Today we want to offer some clarity about the concerns you have about player actions that undermine those achievements.

As per our existing rules:

Providing or purchasing account services including - but not limited to - things like paying someone to increase your account's experience or complete quests and activities on your behalf are a form of Real World Trading, and are therefore prohibited.

Note that this is not a new change to the game rules.

So, what does this mean? Simply that paying someone - whether that be with real-world cash or in-game items/money - to complete tasks or activities while logged into your account on your behalf is not allowed. This is what we mean by Real World Trading. Even if you're 'paying' with in-game items, you're still buying an 'out-of-game', real-world service.

However, there has been some confusion about how this ties into another existing rule, namely:

Game items must only be exchanged for other items/services within the game.

This rule was written long before account services such as those described above became prevalent, and it's definitely unfortunate that it includes the word 'services'. So let us explain exactly what it means in this context.

A player might trade in-game gold for another player's in-game item, or they might pay another player with in-game gold to help with in-game activities, like essence running or having quest items delivered to your location. All of which is absolutely fine. You're absolutely free to buy in-game help with in-game items - that is what the 'services' means in this context.

So, the distinction is thus

  • Paying for in-game help from a fellow RuneScape player (with in-game money or items) is absolutely fine.
  • Paying for out-of-game help from a real person logged into your account (with either in-game or real-world money/items) is a severe breach of the rules.
  • Hopefully that clears up any confusion.

However, enforcing these rules presents many challenges.

The truth is, as long as there's money to be gained, battling any form of cheating in online gaming is an arms race. The culprits and rule-breakers will continue to adapt to bypass our efforts, especially as new tools to aid rule-breaking become even cheaper and even more accessible. We meet this challenge by continuing to invest in our our tools, and we will take every possible action.

Beyond this, however, we believe that the best weapon in our arsenal is our relationship with community and industry partners. We're going to use these relationships to target the places where account services are advertised. These services are offered on various community platforms and boards and are, frankly, a blight on our game. So we'll be going after social media profiles, websites, community servers and forums where such ads appear, or even places and/or individuals that simply direct others to such services.

But we also need your help.

With tomorrow's (Wednesday, March 24th) game update you'll notice a slight change to the options in the Report Abuse interface. We'll be updating the 'Buying or selling an account' report option to 'Buying/selling accounts and services'. This can be used to highlight players advertising this activity in-game. This will allow us to track the problem at its source, quickly identifying where such services are hosted and allowing us to take them down.

We'd like to thank you for your support in tackling rule-breaking and striving to do what's best for Old School. This is a new approach, and it's one we'll continue refining. Building and executing new processes takes time, especially when multiple platforms and parties are involved, but rest assured we're hell-bent on doing what's right.

This Is Old School: Making Money as a Free-to-Play Player

Money talks, and that's certainly true in the world of Gielinor. Seen one of your fellow adventurers wielding a massive sword and feeling jealous? Killing the boss that drops that loot is one option, but why not just buy one from another player? Need some runes to cast spells to take down some demons? You could go and make your own, but equally there's no reason not to drop some cash instead.

To help, we've put together a short guide about beginning to fill your purse with the coins you'll need to fund your adventures!

Getting Started

The first tip we'll give is have fun. Kill stuff and pick up the things they drop. Cut logs and sell them. Catch some fish and sell those. You can start building your fortune whatever you choose to do in Gielinor.

But you're gamers, and you want to know the best way to fill your Bank, right?

Here's an easy way to make 10,000GP early in the game. And the best thing is - brand new accounts can do it! Head to the Stronghold of Security, explore the dungeon, plunder the chests and you'll walk away with coins aplenty!

Blood Money

Monsters in Old School will more often than not drop loot for you to pillage and sell:

Skilling For Riches

Skills really can pay the bills. We've got a handy little list of ways to make money all whilst levelling up your various abilities:

Finding 'Stuff'

Valuable items can be found throughout the entire world of Gielinor. Some might be in dangerous places, but if you're brave enough then you'll be blinging it up in no time at all:

Odd Jobs

Players will pay a pretty penny for items, particularly those which can be quite tricky to acquire. Supply and demand, baby:

You're rich! But you can always be richer...

Those are just a handful of ways for new free-to-play players to bankroll the beginning of an epic journey. We'd seriously recommend taking a look at the assortment of methods and guides listed on the Old School Wiki (it's easily the greatest Wiki in the world!).

Until next time, future adventurer!

The Old School Team

This is Old School RuneScape: Combat

Combat! Ah, the glorious art of bashing monsters and hunting demons is part of any good high-fantasy world, and Old School is no different. We think it's high time to take a deeper look at the various Combat arts you can master and see how they fit in to your adventures across the world of Gielinor.
Master of Many

There’s three primary styles of Combat to get to grips with in Old School – Melee, Ranged and Magic. Each has associated skills to level which increase your power through new spells, grant access to higher level gear and plenty more besides.

There are no classes in Old School, so you can be a master of any Combat style you like at any time... and you’ll need to be! As you venture across Gielinor, there’s a vast array of creatures, dragons, demons and even humans that all have their own strengths and weaknesses, so being versatile with your Combat is often key to success.

But fret not - equipment helps make your raw capabilities even more lethal. As you level up key skills (like Attack for Melee, or Defence for Armor) you’ll be able to equip better protection and weapons that will even the odds against the increasingly gruesome foes.
Battle With Purpose

While there's nothing quite like some mindless Slaying, we know there's plenty of you out there who crave purpose beyond the simple joy of monster-bashing. So good news - there’s plenty of reasons!

For those who desire lore and story, you’ll need to enhance your powers to take on some of the toughest quests in the game and successfully overcome climactic battles that will test your Combat skillset.

For the less quest-orientated, the aptly named Slayer skill tasks you with travelling the land to hunt down various types of monsters. Kill enough to complete your task and you'll gain access to even more rewarding and lucrative beasties!

And then there's the pinnacle PvM content to tackle, from epic solo bosses through to a whole menagerie of challenging group encounters. You name it, we have it! If you are someone who yearns for glory and the best rewards the game has to offer, this is for you - whether you use those drops to make money or to arm yourself to the teeth.

There's also a multitude of exciting minigames offering fantastic rewards, ranging from vast riches to dazzling equipment upgrades. Conquering the battlefields of Pest Control, for instance, will give you access to Void armours, whilst besting the Fight Caves will reward you with the iconic Fire Cape.

And finally, for the brave and the bold, there’s PvP in the legendary Wilderness. Those brave enough to venture into the depths of this special PvP enabled area can face off against other players, but be warned - almost everything you are holding or have equipped is on the line. You can reap massive rewards in the Wildy, but you can also lose it all...
Skilling Matters

On top of power-boosting gear, other skills in your repertoire will also feed into your Combat lethality!

The Prayer skill offers the most direct assistance, allowing you to channel godly blessings that enhance your abilities and offer protection from your many foes.

As with the general philosophy of skilling in Old School, many of the other abilities will also give you a helping hand in your quest for Combat prowess. And that goes far beyond simply crafting your own armour and weapons. Take Herblore - your knowledge of potions can translate to success in battle, allowing you to craft concoctions that can both protect you or boost your capabilities.
Fighting Factors

While skills are an important aspect of Combat, damage done and received is mostly determined by external traits. There are a lot of other factors which contribute to the outcomes of your fights.

  • Armour and Weapons: Generally, armour boosts a person's defensive capabilities by reducing the accuracy of incoming attacks, and weaponry boosts a player's offensive capabilities. However, armour may also provide offensive bonuses, and weapons usually provide minor defensive bonuses. For maximum effectiveness, players should use the best equipment available to them, since bonuses provided by equipment are at least as important as levels in combat skills.

  • Special Attacks: Some weapons have unique special attacks. These consume a type of energy resource known as the special attack bar, unleashing an effect specific to the weapon. This may include extra damage, additional hits, stat drains and much more.

  • Speed of Attack: All weapons in Old School have a specific speed determining the interval between successive hits. Attack speed is arguably the single most important factor in damage per second, though fast weapons tend to not be as accurate or powerful as their counterparts. Fast, inaccurate weapons are ideal against enemies with low Defence. In contrast, slower and more accurate weapons fare better against tougher enemies with high Defence.

  • Damage Absorption: Some rare armours can offer unique absorption effects to help you survive specific brutalities. Certain shields can protect you from the fire of a dragon's breath, for example, whilst Yak-hide armour will mitigate a lot of the damage you'll face when facing off against Ice Trolls.

Test Your Mettle

Fortune favours the bold. Get stuck in (as in, stick your weapons into) to the challenges that Old School has to offer!

Until next time, future adventurer!

We’re looking to the skies this week for the arrival of Shooting Stars - a blast from the past RuneScape activity from 2008 that’s been brought back and Old School-ified. We’ve also tweaked a few demons and devils and made adjustments to the Corporeal Beast. Cosmic!

Shooting Stars

Shooting Stars are landing all across Gielinor! These wondrous objects can be mined for rewards, and players can use telescopes to figure out when and where they might land. This is one of the new types of activity we're calling 'Distraction and Diversion' (Treasure Trails and Champions Challenge are also now in this category, rather than being classed as minigames).

On every world, a Shooting Star will fall at a random spot selected from a predetermined list. This happens roughly every two hours, with a variation of up to 15 minutes to stop them from being too predictable. Read on to find out how to track them, and why it's worth the chase...

A Star (Hunter) Is Born

A lot of you will find Stars by just happening upon them on your travels. However, dedicated hunters can use the telescope in their Player Owned House to determine the rough landing location. Different telescopes will offer varying levels of accuracy.

Sounds easy? Actually, your telescopes will only point to the general region where a Star will fall, so you still need to search for the exact spot.

Landing Sites

[expand type="details"]Here's a list of the assorted landing sites. You'll notice that a lot of them are near Banks or Mining spots - handy! We want this update to complement your gameplay as much as possible.
RuneScape's original release had fewer landing sites. Here, the number has nearly doubled (spanning multiple new regions) to provide some more variety. Lovely stuff.

F2P Stars

Shooting Stars was originally for RuneScape members only, but in Old School they will land on F2P worlds too! However, without access to a telescope, players will have to find Stars by chance. Additionally, Stars may still land in non-F2P areas on F2P worlds, rendering them out of reach.

Stars will offer 50% of the usual value on F2P worlds, and as the Reward Shop is not available, XP will be the only benefit. However, Stardust (see next section) will still be given on F2P worlds. It's a good idea to save it up ready to be used should you ever decide to become a member!

Mining Stars

Once a Star has landed, it is ready to be mined.

The landing times of the last five Stars will also be listed on a board in the Observatory, along with the names of the players that found them.

Fallen Stars come in nine different sizes, and a Star can be any size when it lands. Each has a different Mining Level requirement calculated at the size x10.

Mining any Star will reward players with Stardust, an untradeable currency that can be used to purchase a variety of untradeable rewards. Each size can be mined for a different amount, and once depleted it will shrink to a smaller size. Every time some Stardust is mined, Mining XP is awarded as well as the chance to also receive gems, clue geodes and the mining pet.

Rewards

In addition to all the lovely Mining XP, players can also use their Stardust to buy rewards! Dusuri, a Dwarf found in Falador just outside the Mining Guild will happily take your Stardust in exchange for items. He appears on both P2P and F2P worlds.

Celestial Ring

This untradeable ring will give a hidden Mining boost of +4 when worn. This stacks with other invisible boosts. It will also be chargeable with Stardust. Each Stardust will add one charge up to a max of 10,000 charges. When charged, the ring will have a 1/10 chance of giving an extra ore when mining, and this extra ore will reward the normal XP amount when mined. Extra ore can emerge at any rock where the Mining Skillcape has a chance of giving it. Every time ore is mined from a suitable rock, a charge will be lost from the ring.

Star Fragment

These can be used on any piece of the Prospector Outfit to recolour a specific piece gold.

Bag Full of Gems

Contains gems - but which ones? Works like any other Bag full of gems.

Soft Clay Pack

A pack containing 100 pieces of soft clay. Works like any other Soft Clay Pack.

Bolt Pouch Update

After successful polling, we are updating the Bolt Pouch interact! These tweaks should make it much more user-friendly:

  • You no longer need to right-click an item in the Pouch to remove it - you can simply left-click/tap.
  • To wear bolts from the Pouch, just drag and drop them into the current ammo slot.
  • There is a new slot in the Pouch called Extra Ammo, in your worn equipment tab above your normal ammo. You can left-click/tap to switch between your worn bolts and extra bolts without opening the pouch itself. Fewer clicks to switch ammo - nice!
  • The Bolt Pouch now works similarly to items like the Rune Pouch. Upon your character's death, the Bolt Pouch can be picked up with the stored bolts emptied into the gravestone. If the player dies during PvM and below level 20 Wilderness, the Bolt Pouch contents are emptied into the gravestone and the bolt pouch is preserved. If the player dies during PvM but above level 20 Wilderness, the Pouch is destroyed and the contents emptied into the gravestone. On a PvP death, the pouch is destroyed and a coin is given to the player, along with all the bolts. Should this happen, you'll be able to pick up another one from Hirko in Keldagrim.
  • The following items can now be added to the Bolt Pouch:
    • Grapple (one per slot)
    • Bolt Racks

Poll 74 Changes

We've made some changes based on the results of Poll 74!

The following demon-like monsters have been tagged as demons:
  • Bloodveld (all variants)
  • Icefiends
  • Imps
  • Waterfiends
  • Pyrefiends (including superiors)
  • Pyrelords (including superiors)
  • Porazdir
  • Most hellhound types:
    • Unique hellhounds like Cerberus and Bouncer are included in this
    • Undead hellhounds (skeletal, ghost etc) are not included

There is now a small chance of receiving bird's egg nests when emptying a full birdhouse.

Thermonuclear Smoke Devil has a reduced chance of dropping Tinderboxes, Bullseye Lanterns, Pure essence and Kebabs.

Thermonuclear Smoke Devil now has a tertiary roll for the Jar of Smoke.

Players can now make Dark Flippers! Visit Patchy the pirate in Mos Le'Harmless to combine the Dark Claw from Skotizo and Flippers from Mogres!

Corporeal Beast

  • When Corporeal Beast begins additional heal regeneration in group sizes of eight or more, this now scales from a lower base value.
  • Additionally, the Corporeal Beast will no longer award loot to Iron-players if it has attacked another player. If this happens, you'll be able to tell because a brazier will be lit outside.
  • These changes were implemented to better enforce the Ironman mode, which is about solo-only play. Apologies for not doing this sooner - we acknowledge that this change has come some time after the launch of Corporeal Beast. In future we plan to make more changes to bring the mode closer to where we think it should be!
  • In addition to this, the Corporeal Beast will be reset if it has neither attacked or been attacked by another player for 3 minutes.
  • The Corporeal beast now has a tertiary roll for the Jar of Spirits.

Castle Wars

Back in November we proposed some Castle Wars tweaks in the Soul Wars and Minigames poll. Since then we've been in discussion with the Castle Wars community, and this week's update brings the following changes...

  • Potion supply tables have been placed in the starting room for each respective game in Castle Wars.
  • A new notification has been added to the game, directing players to Castle Wars worlds.
  • Players can no longer trade members of the opposite team.
  • Players may no longer hop worlds and re-join Castle Wars games (logging in and out in the same world remains unaffected).

Clan Hall Concepts

We recently showcased the progress we've made on the Clans system, and today we've got a quick update about Clan Halls. These are private areas just for your Clan, and can be accessed through a portal in the Hub.

We've got three options for their theme which are:

  • Crystalline, based on the Prifddinas style.
  • Gothic Mansion, based on the Darkmeyer style.
  • Generic medieval fantasy from the western hemisphere, e.g. a castle or country house.

Theme A: Crystaline/Prifddinas style

Theme B: Gothic/Darkmeyer style

Theme C: Fantasy Medieval style.

Which style will make it into the final Clans rework? That's up to you! We'll be opening an in-game poll shortly, so let us know your favourite.

We'll only be able to implement one of these themes for release, but that won't stop us adding more in future. This may include extensive customisation options for your Clan to unlock or buy.

In the preview blog, we also showed the Clan Hub, a small encampment where you'll form your Clan. We provisionally placed it in an unused corner of the Grand Exchange, along with the forthcoming gaming tables, since the GE is an existing social area that's easily accessed. Not everyone agreed with that location, though. As an alternative, we could place it south of Falador, like RS3 did. We're open to other locations for the encampment too - if there's a lot of support for a change, we can use the same in-game poll to see which is the most popular approach.

Smaller Changes

The #SixJadChallenge competition is now closed and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated! We'll be reviewing all the entries carefully and we look forward to announcing the winners in the near future.

Players may now opt out of dropping food and potions as a supply pile upon death, sending them to the gravestone instead. The new toggle is in the Gameplay tab of the Settings menu.

Special Attack energy will now restore when a player enters the new Jad challenge, dropping to the level it was at prior to entering.

The value of Zealot items has increased so that they will protect over all bones upon death.

A new setting has been added to optionally separate personal bests into hours.

The party in Lumbridge is over (boo) and the monkeys have returned to Ape Atoll! Our 8th Birthday event has now been removed from the game. See you all next year...

Plus:
  • The TzHaar-Kets have shrunk a little, so that they can be one-tile NPCs as they used to be (but without the graphical bugs they had before)!
  • You can now click the jar generator more rapidly to get additional jars.
  • Some grammar has been corrected in the Hallowed Sepulchre and the Inferno.
  • A spelling error has been fixed on the Swampbark and Bloodbark gauntlets.

That's everything for this week's game update. We'd love to hear your feedback so please let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel.

Server Login Issues - Thursday, March 11th

In yesterday's Server Login Issues update, the RuneScape Team shared the promising progress that's been made towards restoring accounts and resolving the ongoing login issue.

They also clarified that beginning today (March 11th) a small number of affected players will face temporarily restrictions preventing them from accessing their game accounts. This step is essential for the account restoration process.

All players affected by this restriction will have by now received a confirmation email.

Whilst the account issues are confined to RuneScape characters, the structure of our accounts system means that a small number of affected players will also be unable to log-in to Old School until the restoration work is completed.

What You'll See If Your Account Has Been Restricted

Firstly, this only applies to players who have been contacted via email and inbox message, as described above. The messaging you'll see isn't the clearest, so let's show you what you might see!
