We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we will be increasing the prices of our games on Steam starting next month.
We understand that this news may come as a surprise, and we want to assure you that we have not taken this decision lightly. As you're surely aware, over the past decade, the cost of development and production has increased significantly due to inflation. Inflation affects the cost of materials, wages, and other expenses, which has impacted our business operations. We need to adjust our pricing to keep up with these changes.
The new pricing for all of our games, from May 1st:
All other currencies will be adapted to match the USD price using Steam's regional pricing recommendations, which of course means that actual price increases may vary. We apologize for not communicating all regional pricing updates in advance.
We remain committed to providing you with high-quality games and delivering the best possible gaming experience. We appreciate your continued support, and we hope that you will understand our need to adjust our pricing accordingly.
Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with great games on Steam.
Sincerely, Black Pants
Steam Deck compatibility
Hey there,
Just a quick update since our Steam Deck has arrived and we tested all of our games on it.
We can happily report that On Rusty Trails runs very well on the small device! No tweaks to the settings are required, it will launch the Linux build out-of-the-box and it didn't seem to have any problems with the hardware.
You can even crank it up to 8x MSAA with V-Sync enabled, and it will push a stable 60 FPS. Please note though, that while the picture quality with MSAA is very nice compared to FXAA, it will eat more battery.
Have fun! Black Pants

Update 1.3.0 is here!
Good day everyone,
we're here to bring you an early present: you get 1GB free drive space!
We added compression support to our game engine, so all that data needs much less space on disk. After downloading, On Rusty Trails is now occupying a mere 500 megabytes. Of course, all the content is still there, it's just more tightly packed and loads up even faster!
The only downside is that this patch is much bigger than the previous ones, because you basically have to redownload the whole thing. Future updates will be back to a few megs, though.
Complete list of changes:
Added compression for game files, which reduces disk usage from 1.7GB down to about 500MB
Added multi-threaded asset loading, which improves loading times
Improved controls menu, each input can now be mapped to multiple buttons or keys
Added Xbox 360 controller prompts (from https://opengameart.org/content/free-keyboard-and-controllers-prompts-pack)
Fixed a bug which caused controls settings not to be saved
Fixed minor localization issues
Steam account name and avatar are now shown in the main menu
Updated Steamworks SDK to 1.41
Updated libSDL to 2.0.7
Patch 1.2.2 released
How's it going?
We've been patching again, and this time around it's just a couple bug fixes:
Windows:
Fixed stutter on quad core CPUs
Linux & Mac:
Reduced memory usage
Thanks for reading!
Patch 1.2.1 released!
Hi folks,
there's another update live today, it fixes a few bugs that crept into the last update, as well as some more optimizations! Enjoy :)
List of changes:
Fixed a bug in the menu where different menu sections were drawn overlapping each other
Fixed a bug in the credits section where the chinese variation of the logo was displayed when a language was selected that was neither Chinese nor English
Again, fixed a bug where the game would refuse to start when Steam Cloud was disabled
OpenGL optimizations
Patch 1.2.0 released
Greetings, dear players,
Today we pushed update 1.2.0 out. We added translated text for Chinese and German, as well as a lot of optimizations. Enjoy!
List of changes:
Added localized text for Chinese (both simplified and traditional) and German
On low quality settings, the most expensive post FX are now disabled to improve frame rates on low-end graphics cards
Optimized render state management, which improves performance, especially on low-end CPUs
Optimized task management, which positively impacts performance and battery usage
Fixed a very rare crash which happened after switching to a new level
Fixed stuttering of intro video
Minor improvements to loading times
Fixed a few minor bugs detected by UBSan
Updated Steamworks SDK to 1.40
Windows only:
Windows XP is now supported
macOS only:
Enabled usage of SSSE3 CPU instructions (previously used SSE2 only). Probably no gain in performance because of this, but it can't hurt, either.
Linux only:
Removed dependency on libGL.so, all GL functions are now dynamically loaded
Patch 1.1.3 released
Hey there,
here's another patch that addresses a technical problem on older CPUs like the Core 2 Duo.
There's a change for Windows users in this update, that might break the game in some rare cases. We moved the EXE from a sub-directory to the game directory, so you can start the game from outside Steam. This wouldn't work previously, because the game couldn't find the data files when run from the sub-directory.
So if the game fails to launch, make sure the update has downloaded correctly. You may have to restart Steam so it will receive the latest configuration.
If the error persists, there are two things you should know:
If you previously copied or moved the game files to the main directory yourself, this could clash with the update. In this case, you will get an error message that says "Write error" when launching the game.
If you don't download the update, you can't run the game from Steam anymore, because it will expect the EXE to be at the new location. There will be an error message that says "Missing executable".
Let's hope for a smooth update - here goes nothing :)
Patch 1.1.2 released
Nothing exciting, just a quick hotfix: the game was crashing if Steam Cloud was disabled in the settings.
Cheers!
On Rusty Trails v1.1 is here!
Hey nice people of this fine group,
today, we released a major update for On Rusty Trails which contains a few long-awaited features and bug-fixes.
A list:
Leaderboards can now be viewed from the level select menu (press Y on controller or L on the keyboard)
Level select screen now shows the status of each completed level (completed without dying / completed while keeping all tokens)
Added replay level button (Back on controller, Backspace on keyboard) when at the stats screen after each level
Final boss fight was broken when it was started again after watching the credits
Fixed an issue where cutscenes would no longer skip on request when changing levels frequently
Removed a render target texture that wasn't even used, saves a bit of memory
Fixed a bug where gravity wasn't reset correctly after player died inside a force field
Player deaths are now counted only if a save point was used, otherwise they are reset on respawn
Fixed a file handle leak which could cause problems during loading on macOS
We hope you enjoy this early holiday present! For those of you who are into speed-running, the retry button and in-game leaderboards should be up your alley. And if you are hunting achievements, the level select badges make that much less frustrating...
There's a lot more to be done, so expect many more updates to come, and see you all next year!
Have a good one,
the team at Black Pants
EDIT: There was a game-breaking bug introduced by this patch, but it's now resolved in the current version.
