Saturday Blog #2 - Feedback

This week has been a busy one. What the focus of this update was all about was to change the game to provide more feedback.

The first thing I worked on was creating a system that allowed not only the health and shield to displayed above the structures and units but other values depending on what I wanted.

The next thing that I wanted to work on was selection feedback, it is still quite an issue in my game where you select a building and you don't know which one you selected, so now there is a selection arrow. This video helps in explaining what I wanted to achieve.

The next thing on my to-do list for this week was to finish off a much-requested feature. Now it’s currently called Object Stats, but that name could change over time. Essentially what I’m trying to do is creating a system in the game where anyone can view what objects are in the game with a small description as well as displaying important values. although its 95% done there are some small changes that need to work into it.

The last thing that I worked on this week was some balancing with the enemy units, the enemy units health and shield have been scaled to fit closely with the player unit stats. not only that the damage has been changed on a few weapons to compensate for such a drastic change. There really aren’t any screenshots to show you of this change but playing the game you will notice them.

The final thing that I worked on this week was a rework of the random event system and the pirates. Pirates now spawn frigates every 60-90 depending on a random generation. the number of frigates is dependent on the difficulty that you choose. Not only that but now the pirate leader ship (Big Skull Ship) as most people are calling it, now spawns from a random outpost every 10 minutes. to stop them from spawning you must kill all the outpost, giving a new object for you to achieve in the game.

The random event system reworks so the removal of the pirate ship and the additions of an asteroid storm. The asteroid storm spawns over a certain amount of time. after that time around 3000 asteroids will spawn from the right side of your screen. each asteroid will damage anything on impact. the damage it does to shields is very small of 2 but to hull its 30. The best strategy is to put ships with large shields in front of ones without.


It’s quite hard to show them in the game now as they are still a Work in Progress.

Saturday Blog 1 - The Rework

Hi all, this is the start and hopefully something I will do every Saturday. These posts will be simple updates to what I’m working on, as well as feedback for anything that I am working on.

The first thing on my to-do list, for update 1.3 is to redesign the main menu. This is a major overall for the game, as the main menu felt very neglected and at times hard to navigate, so my plan is to make the main menu, flows better, be more straight forward and overall look better.

currently, the menu is 90% done, with still a few things to do, mostly with functionality.

what we are doing is changing mostly the color scheme around, as well as making the UI a little more fitting to the style of our game.

This is what mean; we are moving away from the straight orange and grey and moving the more a black and white SCI-FI UI.

This is the new Layout for choosing your game mode, but the survival scene is still a work in progress as well but is mostly there.

This is most of the work that has been going on over the Easter break, feedback is very much appreciated on all menu items, as we want to get everything correct and perfect.

The second thing that we have been working on is a rework of the in-game UI, we noticed a lot of inconsistency as well as a lot of problems with the current system, so we are reworking most of it so that it is more convenient and straight forward. What we mean by that is that there is not a lot of convenient information displayed on the screen, for players. so, the first step that we are taking is making sure the player knows exactly what's happening with their resources.

This is a screenshot of the new menu items being added, these items display for each resource the amount you will gain per income cycle.

we plan to further improve the feedback of the UI, down the line with more feedback.

The last thing that we have been working on is a rework of the fighter system, at the moment the fighters have been created to be as efficient as possible, but thanks to new methods and systems that were implemented we are able to explore a little more detail into the fighters, what we mean by this is the current fighter models have at max have about 30 faces, where the new models are a lot more detailed.
