Opus Magnum

UPDATE: Switching to DirectSound on Windows

Tonight's update switches the game's audio subsystem on Windows from WASAPI to DirectSound. This should fix the previous surround sound bugs for all users without anyone needing to turn on a hidden setting, and should also fix some scenarios where the game did not respond to changes in audio devices while running.

UPDATE: Removing iron-on patch link

We're shutting down the Zachtronics store today, so this update removes the link at the end of the game to where you could buy an iron-on achievement patch. If you narrowly missed this you can email me at zach@zachtronics.com and we'll work something out.

UPDATE: Small tweak to the Hexstabilized Salt puzzle

The puzzle now requires 18 outputs instead of 6.

UPDATE: New journal issue with production puzzles

Today's update adds a new journal issue that is entirely production puzzles.

This is partially an experiment to see how interesting user-created production puzzles are, as four of the five puzzles are standard user-created puzzles that I've jammed into production cabinets that look like they're about the right size. If you end up playing these puzzles you should post your comments somewhere that I'll see them!

UPDATE: Possible bug fix for sound issues

Today's update adds a hidden option that will hopefully fix some of the sound issues that were introduced when we rewrote our audio backend a few weeks ago.

If you're experiencing static, skipping, or other sound issues when using a surround sound audio device, please follow these instructions:

  1. Restart Steam to make sure you have the latest version of the game.
  2. Launch the game, let it finish loading, and then exit. This will add a new entry to your config file.
  3. Open your config file (config.cfg) in a text editor and change OS.Windows.UseDirectSound from False to True.
  4. Save your changes and exit the text editor.
  5. Launch the game again.

On Windows (the only affected platform) your config file is in in the following location:

My Documents/My Games/Opus Magnum

If it worked correctly the game will probably be quieter than last time and, if we're lucky, won't exhibit the same glitching behavior as before!

UPDATE: New journal issue, minor bug fixes

We pushed an update yesterday afternoon that added a new issue to the journal with some "battlefield medicine" themed puzzles. We also made the following minor bug fixes:

  • The game's content files are now opened as read-only, which should hopefully fix some of the antivirus-related crashes some players have been experiencing.
  • Atom spawn/consume effects on glyphs are now cleared when the simulation is stopped, which should fix a bug causing "ghost atoms" to linger on the board.

Opus Magnum has left Early Access!

Opus Magnum has left Early Access!

In the coming weeks we'll continue fixing bugs as they arise, and are hoping to add at least one or two additional journal issues. Our thanks go out to everyone who provided feedback, suggestions, and puzzle submissions throughout the Early Access process; it's always appreciated, and always makes our games better.

UPDATE: Audio engine overhaul

Today's update replaces our old audio engine with a completely new one. Most players shouldn't see any change, but this should hopefully fix a crash specific to players using the Chinese IME in Windows.

Also included in this update are two small bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where bound atoms dropped by multiple grabbers into a conduit would sometimes return through the conduit immediately.
  • Fixed a bug where Van Berlo's wheels would not block reagent inputs in the same way that other atoms do.

UPDATE: Localization improvements

Tonight's update fixes a few translation issues in German and Chinese, and even a crash (!) when opening the Aether Detector puzzle with the language set to Chinese.

It also includes a small performance improvement for rendering, although I don't suspect it'll make much of a difference for anyone.

UPDATE: Localization update

Today's update adds translations for all text added since Opus Magnum first launched into Early Access, including the story for the production puzzles that were recently added to the end of the main campaign. If you see any translation errors you should let us know!
