Outmode

The Soundtrack Update

Hello all,

Today I am happy to announce that with collaboration between Retrowave Touch Records and Spaceinvader, a brand new, original soundtrack has been brought to the game and features nine radical Synthwave tracks!

New Soundtrack

You can find the soundtrack on most streaming services or find it directly either on the Bandcamp or the Steam store.

If you already own Outmode you can get it at a third of the price if you own it through Steam!

A massive thank you to all the artists who provided the legacy soundtrack in the game with their royalty free music, below is a list of their music:

  • CHRISRGMFB - Bruce Van Damme
  • Punch Deck - music to wear fingerless gloves to
  • EVA - Zeta Reticuli
  • CHRISRGMFB - Pandemic (2021 Remix)
  • HurricaneTurtle - Shelled Out
  • INTRNLCMD - Sunset City
  • FSCHR (Ft.Sheiko) - Vigilante
  • FSCHR - Apex
  • FSCHR - Summer Shift
  • FSCHR - Welcome To The Game

Development Update

In terms of updates, (as I'm sure many of you have guessed by now) I am afraid that I will no longer be able to continue with the original roadmap plan - meaning that the final car and map will not be added. I'm sure many of you will feel disappointed by this and since so many of you have gone above and beyond with your support and feedback, to show my appreciation I am offering up a free copy of my next game if you currently own Outmode (promo ends Jan 31st 2023). On top of that, I have also made VR Mode free on the store and have reduced the price of the base game for new players.

Although this next game is a quite while away yet, I can still tell you it features more '80s radness - many of you I think would love!

To claim your copy please fill out the Google form below and follow the instructions on it:
Next Game Claim Form

Aside from that, I've adjusted the VR Mode perspectives a little so that cars should not feel too big or too small when you sit in them now and have patched some minor bugs and QOL changes here and there. I wish I could've done so much more for the game but currently updates will have to be discontinued. I'll be around to patch any major game breaking bugs with this patch but (fingers crossed) I don't think there'll be anything that serious.

A massive thank you to all those who have contributed on the Discord server and Steam forums with your feedback over the past few months and of course to those of you who have gone out of your way to purchase and play my game, supporting my passion. I have learnt a lot making Outmode and thanks to you my next one will be even better.

A merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you wherever you are.

Stay rad.

- Rockateer (Will).

VR Mode + Tournament Update

Hello Outrunners,

I bring you some much needed updates to VR Mode and a brand new game mode which adds progression for map unlocks!

VR Mode

Over the past couple of weeks I've been working hard to make VR Mode much more playable and today I am glad to say I am happy with the final results. Overall you should expect double your performance in VR Mode, if not more. To do this I used an optimisation technique which allows Unity to render the headset camera onto a texture and copy it onto your other eye rather than rendering both eyes separately (thus the double frame rate). This comes with a trade off however, the radial blur effect you may have noticed when boosting had to be disabled as it was not compatible with the render texture. I'm sure you'll all agree this was worth it.

Along side this I've added an array of QOL changes to the mode which should allow for smoother play. Please see below for full details.

New Game Mode: Tournament

A brand new game mode has been added. "Tournament" is similar to Mario Kart's Grand Prix mode. You must now partake and come in the top three of each "cup" to unlock all the maps for free play in race or time trial. This won't require much grinding and many of you will be able to unlock everything on your first play through. There is an extra incentive to this mode, lots of credits. If you win a cup you walk away with the prize money. However, if you don't make top three you walk away with nothing and you'll have to kick rocks instead of buying that awesome purple Lambo you've been eyeing in the garage. At first you only have access to "The Chrome Cup" which is the first tier out of three difficulties of cups. You can unlock the chance to play in the next tier of cup by winning the previous one.

With this there have been some pretty smooth changes to vehicle collision, barriers are now much less punishing and you should be able to hit them and will be guided back onto the track without being pinged around. Also some new camera effects have been added which lean into the cars physics, you'll see what I mean when you try it out for yourself.

Other than that here's a full list of patch notes:
- Global Time Attack rankings/best times in extras menu.
- Barrier collision smoothed out.
- Purchase with [x] amount of coins text changes position and colour to make it more readable.
- Camera physics for first and third person cameras.
- Better UI navigation/clarity - you can now press ESC or right button to exit main menu sub menus.
- VR Mode tutorial added on HUD.
- Re-centre option for main menu.
- No more bumpy roads (except on Endless)!
- AI Benefactors shouldn't float off into space now when activating their Second Law ability.
- Pause menu remains static for VR.
- Colour filters reset (from player ultimate) after hitting finish line.
- The option to retry races and time trials.
- Drift score added.
- No more black screen when re-entering settings sub menu after exiting from rebinds.
- Key rebinds should now work!
- Window mode kept consistent over play sessions.
- Cup/map progression.
- Pause menu not too far away for VR anymore.
- VR Mode camera positioning adjusted.
- Car shake toned down.
- Car lean toned down.
- Gunship better tracking.
- People who have obviously been cheating with their high scores (looking at you Phil337) have been removed from both demo and full versions of the game.

Thank you all for your continued feedback and support.

Stay rad.

Day 1 Patch Live!

Hello Outrunners,

I bring you the day 1 patch (hotfix)!

Here's a brief list of the changes:

- Resolutions are now much more malleable, allowing you to use widescreen, ultrawide, 16:10 or whatever with (hopefully) little issue and NO MORE BLACK BARS. The third person UI for the cars aren't yet perfect but it's now definitely playable.
- AI won't stick to walls after the finish line on Starlight Nightway.
- Engine sound glitch fixed on respawn/reset.
- The engine slider in the settings should work fine now.
- Cutscenes SHOULD now be consistently skippable. Please let me know if you are still having issues.
- Races/time trials now start on the green light instead of a few seconds after.
- Shuffle mode now fixed for user music.
- "Best lap" times reset on race finish (for next race).
- Starlight Nightway rockets should now be less janky.
- Potential crashes when passing the finish line fixed(?).
- Autobox achievement progression sorted.
- Can't get a shift score by simply pressing the clutch any more - must actually shift now!
- Minor QOL things here and there.
- VR Mode main menu camera scaling adjusted.
- VR Mode main menu UI is larger and easier to navigate.
- VR Mode every time you adjust perspective of your car your camera gets repositioned correctly.
- VR Mode Windows Extended Reality and Oculus support removed for the time being due to testing difficulties.

Once again if you are finding that any of these updates weren't effective and you are still experiencing bugs of any form please let me know.

Thank you for the support so far and I can't wait to keep making Outmode a better game.

I will post a road map in a few days with all the post launch content.

Stay rad.

OUTMODE OUT NOW!

Hello Outrunners,

Outmode is now available for purchase!

Thank you to all those in the community who have followed thus far, whether you've come from Reddit, Twitter, Instagram or even just the Steam Next Fest!

Thank you all so much for the overwhelming amount of support I've received over the last 6 months since the first demo launched. It had a rough start but thankfully some community members went above and beyond and provided some much needed critical feedback which (in my opinion) might've saved it from complete failure.

The game is now live and you can purchase the base game along with the VR Mode and Wallpaper pack.

Please also note that I have registered a couple of minor issues in this current build:
- Shuffle mode inverted/broken for user music
- Potential crashes when passing the finish line
- Autobox achievement progression
- Cars get louder on each respawn/reset
- Cars getting stuck to walls
- Aggressive collisions with AI

I will be working vigilantly around the clock to monitor bugs/issues you are encountering.

If you come across anything please post here on the community board and I'll try and get back to you as quick as I can!

Major changes include:

- Drifting in second gear now allows you to maintain greater speed and control around corners.
- Car visual overhaul
- New map - "Nostalgia Lake"

You can expect a patch for these fixes sometime early next week.

Thank all so much again,

If you have any questions please do ask and I'll get back to you!

Now, some exciting news:

THE GAME WILL BE RELEASED ON JUNE 13th

Following that a roadmap will be released with future content going forward.

New Demo

Today marks the start of Steam's Racing Fest - this is a virtual festival Steam hosts to showcase some of the upcoming racing games coming to the market.

Outmode is no exception - and with this a NEW AND IMPROVED DEMO has been released.

I'll keep it short but here are the major changes:

  • Reworked steering and drifting - should feel much more satisfying now!
  • Reworked collision physics - still not all the way there yet but making great strides.
  • Global leaderboards show race and endless high scores - get to competing!
  • New soundtrack with a "currently playing" pop-up.
  • New enemy type for Endless - "The Tomcat" inspired by the F-14 jet from the film Topgun.
  • Lighting improvements.
  • Optimisations that should see an approximate 25% increase in performance!
  • New laser grid trap type.
  • Tones of polish and bug fixes!

I do hope you enjoy, several bug fixes involving AI acting weirdly have already been noted and are in the process of being fixed for final release. Any other bugs you find please do post in the Discord, start a discussion here on Steam or reach out directly to me with an email: rockateerbusiness@gmail.com

Thanks for your supports and stay rad.
