Overboard!

Miss Mulligatawney's School for Promising Girls

When we wrote Overboard! in 2021, we wanted to make a Christie-style detective game that was characterful, funny, puzzley, and quick to get into. No menus, points or systems - just the drama and the dialogue (and the disasters along the way).

Three years later and we've back at it with our next title... Built using the same real-time storytelling technology, but with more characters, more plotilnes, more intrigue, and more mysteries to unravel...

So if that sounds interesting, pop over to the Steam page here and hit the Wishlist button, to be sure to hear when the game is ready!

Haven't met Veronica yet? Now's the time

If you haven't played Overboard! yet - the reverse whodunnit where you are the femme fatale - then now might be the perfect time to do it. Veronica's pushed her husband overboard - but without your help, it's Sing Sing as soon as the boat lands in New York.

We're just saying, this might not be the last we've seen of her...

Going overboard about Overboard!

Come and hang out with Overboard!'s narrative lead, Jon Ingold, as he plays the game and digs up its secrets: how it was made, what bits slipped through, which bits got left out. Murder mystery design, characters, dialogue, and generally being excited about interactive narrative.

¡Échale el muerto a otro!

Here at inkle we make games with lots of words, that combine together in complicated ways. Every playthrough of one of our games is different - sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. That's always meant that we've been afraid to try translation.

Until now.

Thanks to the efforts of a single, fan translator, as of today, Overboard! is now fully playable in Spanish, so now you can lie, cheat, steal, murder, blackmail and burgle in the language of Cervantes and Picasso.

¡Disfrutad!

The translation has been achieved by creating an entirely new copy of the game's 30,000 word script, and weaving the translation into the existing logic and gameplay mechanisms: meaning the translator needed to be fluent in not two languages, but three - English, Spanish, and ink.

Director's Commentary Livestream!

Overboard!'s narrative lead will be playing the game, and talking about how it was made, what bits slipped through and which bits got left out, and generally getting excited about interactive narrative.

Overboard! up for 2 awards at the IGF!

We're thrilled to announce that Overboard! has been nominated for two IGF awards!

The game was nominated for Excellence in Design and Excellence in Narrative. It also received Honourable Mentions for the Grand Prize, and for the Audio category (a good thing we can't win that, as Thomas Edison and Rachmaninoff aren't around to collect it.)

The results will be announced towards the end of March. With previous wins for Narrative for Heaven's Vault and 80 Days, we're crossing our fingers for the triple!

Update'o'clock! It's V1.2.2!

Thanks to everyone submitting bug reports over the weekend - we're delighted to have fixed everything submitted, and it's not even yet lunchtime!

  • The flipping profanity filter now persists across runs, and even across a full reset
  • Exorcised a few ghosts who were returning from the dead
  • Assorted minor story fixes
  • Fixed a rare bug where an image panel appeared over the map
  • Fixed a rare bug where the clock didn't reset fully on restarting

Version 1.2.1 (for real, this time!)

Hello everyone!

We're delighted you've been enjoying our tale of deception, seduction, and murder as much we enjoyed making it.

Special thanks to everyone who reported issues from the in-game bug reporter or via our discord; this should fix everything we've heard about so far!

  • Added a pause menu setting to disable screen flashes
  • Tweaked some images of hands to fit the correct characters
  • Fixed a bug where the clock wouldn't reset on jumping overboard
  • Fixed ending where Clarissa could return from the dead to (successfully) protest her innocence
  • Fixed a crash caused by Veronica getting completely tongue-tied by the Commander's dashing handsomeness
  • Assorted minor story fixes and typos, including the truly remarkable correct spelling of Connecticut
