[p]The Shark and The Bait appear as a pair, and one is hunting the other! In any game where The Shark and The Bait appear, The Shark has a unique victory condition. If they're able to get The Bait thrown overboard three times - through events and/or voting - they will automatically and instantly achieve a solo victory! Both The Shark and The Bait are passive traits.

Maybe they're The Shark! Is someone claiming to be The Bait? Maybe they just don't want to go overboard and really hey're The Cursed? Hmm, tricky times ahead crew... [/p][p]To make things even more challenging for the crew, The Bait will always appear as a ghost when their team is revealed through traits and events. Be vigilant crew![/p]

[p]Go on a sailing adventure during The Pirate Pool Party, and any day when there’s a failed job there is a chance you may encounter the “Spooky Sandcastles” event. Encountering some mysterious haunted sandcastles, the crew must each choose one of the three to hide amongst! But be wary, for once all pirates have picked a hiding place, the most popular pick will reveal how many of the pirates choosing to hide amongst it was actually a ghost!
[img src="https://clan.akamai.steamstatic.com/images/36810747/79368faf1e7432c1d991d46e32b7c66e96c17b4a.png"] Watch out for pirates choosing to hide amongst their peers, or those choosing to go it alone hoping not to be discovered. Whether pirates are jumping in with others or not, there’s bound to be deception around the spooky sandcastles![/p]
Get your Party On in the Photo Booth
[p]To celebrate The Pirate Pool Party, there is one limited-time Background and one limited-time Foil available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take! [/p]
Pirate Pool Party Bots
[p]Invite bots into your game during The Pirate Pool Party, and you may encounter any of three unique bots! Look out for Crabbot, Sandy Botney and Wes Overbot who are all eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! These bots will only join your games during The Pirate Pool Party, so take the chance to meet them now before they swim away for the rest of the year!
Joining Paper Pirates today is the new trait, The Quester!
The Quester is a new passive trait, available in all Trait and Traits+ games. At the start of the voyage, The Quester is given a secret quest to complete. That might be to obey or disobey a number of jobs, change their team, or even go overboard. Only they'll know their secret quest, and whether they choose to try to complete it or not is entirely up to them.
If they are able to complete it, the rewards are sure to be glorious. During the next pre-event phase after they complete their quest, they'll be given a choice of three unique Quester reward events. These include opportunities to swap their rank with another pirate on the ship, exorcise another pirate, or check the team of another pirate, amongst others.
Once The Quester completes their quest and chooses a reward, they'll be given another randomly selected quest to try to complete. There's no limit to how many quests they can complete in one voyage, but they won't get a new one until the old one's finished!
If you find someone is behaving a little oddly, perhaps they're trying to complete their quest to get a special reward!
New Trait: The Informant
Joining Paper Pirates today is the new trait, The Informant!
The Informant is a new passive trait, available in all Trait and Traits+ games. At the start of the voyage, The Informant is notified of up to three traits that aren't currently in the voyage. They might be active traits, they might be passive traits, but they'll know for sure that no pirate started the game with that trait.
What will they do with this information? Will they share with the crew which traits they know no pirate has, or is it better to keep quiet and wait to see if you can catch someone out in a lie? Even better, might a sneaky Informant choose to use their information to pretend to be another powerful trait, with full knowledge that nobody will counter-claim them?
New Trait: The Robot
Joining Paper Pirates today is the new trait, The Robot!
Beep boop to all and ghosts! The Robot is a new active trait, available in all Traits+ games. The Robot is our first dual-trait, in that it occupies both the active and passive slot. If you're chosen to be The Robot at the start of the voyage, your passive trait will be automatically set to Deactivated.
On days when The Robot does not play in, they may activate one of their four special modes, replacing Deactivated as their passive trait. The four modes The Robot can activate are:
Psychic Mode: Whenever a pirate goes overboard, you can check whether they were a human or a ghost.
Silent Mode: Whenever The Robot casts a vote at the end of the day, it will show as if they passed. If their vote throws a pirate overboard, voting will still end as usual.
Assassin Mode: The Robot will always vote first during voting, unless the voyage features The Assassin, when they will instead vote second.
Disguised Mode: Whenever a pirate checks The Robot's team through an event or trait, The Robot's team will show as the opposite of their true team (e.g., a human Robot will show as a ghost).
The Robot's mode will remain the same until they choose to change it, which they can do so freely any time they don't play in.
The Robot's power to emulate other passive traits makes it very unique. There's bound to be some super sneaky tactics by switching in and out of particular traits at a whim!
Spring Sailing!
Go Egg Hunting on the Seven Seas with Spring Sailing!
Across March and April, we’re celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Spring Sailing! Running from 15th March - 12th April, celebrate the season of spring with a festival of eggs, bunnies, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Spring Chicken
Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of Spring Sailing is the seasonal trait, The Spring Chicken! Play a trait game, and one of the crew may find themselves with this happy-go-lucky, seasonal appropriate trait.
Each day, when The Spring Chicken is not the Captain, they will spring forward one rank of the crew at the start of the event phase! This happens even if there's no other event taking place! What seems like a blessing may be a curse - watch out if you're a ghostly Spring Chicken and you're almost next to The Sensitive...
The Grand Spring Egg Hunt
Every day during Spring Sailing the crew will be challenged to an Egg Hunt by our very own Rabbot! They've hidden a number of eggs all throughout Paper Pirates for you to find - they could be in any of the menu screens, or even in-game! Find your quota each day, and you'll be able to open a special Spring Sailing surprise.
There's three outfits for a combined total of sixteen items, to collect through The Grand Spring Egg Hunt. Make sure to check for eggs every day, and get ready to dress up!

The “Lucky Egg Hunt” Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Spring Sailing, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the “Lucky Egg Hunt” event. A random member of the crew gets to pick one egg out of a selection. The eggs all contain events, and whichever egg they choose will instantly trigger that event! All the other pirates on the boat will get a clue, showing them a picture of an egg, and a description of the event that will happen. Make sure you communicate to the egg hunter to let them know what might happen for each egg - but watch out for the ghosts, who might give you a bad description, or tell you fibs about the event squirreled away inside!
Spring Celebrations in the Photo Booth
To celebrate Spring Sailing, there are two limited-time Foils available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!
Spring Sailing Bot
Invite bots into your game during Spring Sailing, and you may encounter Rabbot - our very own pirate-y Easter Bunny, out to help you uncover eggs at sea! Rabbot will only join your games during Spring Sailing, so take the chance to meet them now before they hop away to hibernate for the rest of the year!
New Trait: The Unfortunate
Joining Paper Pirates today is the new trait, The Unfortunate!
The Unfortunate is a passive trait, available in all Trait and Traits+ games. When The Unfortunate chooses to vote, they're really taking their future into their hands. Should they participate in a vote to throw a human overboard, they will always be the pirate chosen to become a ghost no matter who else voted, how many votes they cast, or which team they're on.
This doesn't impact any events, so for example, The Unfortunate wouldn't be guaranteed to become a ghost should they choose to throw a human Captain overboard during a Mutiny event. Only votes cast at the end of the day will trigger The Unfortunate's unfortunate ability.
Despite the name, The Unfortunate might be able to use their power to their advantage. If they vote someone overboard, and don't become a ghost, they know that pirate must have been on the ghost team... but how will they convince the crew to believe them?
Big Birthday Bash!
Happy birthday, Paper Pirates!
It's Paper Pirates' fifth birthday, and we’re celebrating with the return of The Big Birthday Bash! Running from 28th February - 14th March, celebrate the anniversary of the game's launch with a festival of partying, and a whole host of anniversary goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Magician
Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of The Big Birthday Bash is the seasonal passive trait, The Magician! Play a Trait or Traits+ game during The Big Birthday Bash, and one of the crew may find themselves playing as The Magician.
When the entire crew have finished voting, but no pirate has gone overboard, The Magician will have the opportunity to cast a magic vote. This magic vote has three voting power, and can be cast for any pirate (other than The Magician themselves). The crew won't know who The Magician is, unless they can figure it out through deductive reasoning!
The magic vote still counts as voting for a pirate to go overboard, so if The Magician throws a human overboard they run the risk of becoming a ghost. Question is... who are they?
The “Let Them Eat Cake” Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during The Big Birthday Bash, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the “Let Them Eat Cake” event. The crew will divide up a huge birthday cake, taking the chance to blow out the candles one by one. It's believed that the last person who blows out a candle will get to make a wish... what will they wish for, and will their wish come true?!
Birthday Gift Bounties
Every day during The Big Birthday Bash the crew will receive a special birthday gift bounty! If you complete the assigned task, you can open a present, and inside you will find... a special cosmetic surprise! There are sixteen different cosmetics in total to collect, so make sure to collect your birthday gifts during the seasonal celebration!
Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts
During The Big Birthday Bash, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! Invite bots into your game during The Big Birthday Bash, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with one or three bots that mimic the Iteration Games crew! They’ll only join your games during The Big Birthday Bash, but these bots have their own personality and appearances modelled after the Paper Pirates developers.
An Elaborate History of Chess Demo Available Now!
Ahoy Chess fans!
We're really pleased to share that the next game from Iteration Games, An Elaborate History of Chess, now has a a playable demo on Steam as part of this month's Next Fest!
The demo gives you the opportunity to explore the real-time strategy overworld, farming turnips, fighting rats, building castles, and promoting your pieces. Progress far enough in the overworld, and you'll have the chance to experience one of the turn-based dungeons, featuring combat, puzzles, loot, and intrigue.
As an added bonus, there is a special bounty available in Paper Pirates until 31st March 2025. If you have the An Elaborate History of Chess demo added to your Steam library and installed, this bounty will complete and unlock a special crossover outfit for you to use. We don't want to spoil it, but we think it's pretty fun!
If you play the demo, it would really help if you could consider leaving us a review on the demo's store page. Reviews really help with visibility, and will hopefully allow more people to discover both An Elaborate History of Chess and Paper Pirates. If you haven't already, we'd love it if you gave An Elaborate History of Chess a quick wishlist too, so you can find out when the game launches.
New Trait: The Prosecutor
Joining Paper Pirates today is the new trait, The Prosecutor!
The Prosecutor is an active trait, available in Trait and Traits+ games with at least seven pirates. On days when The Prosecutor doesn't play in, they may attempt to conduct an exorcism on any other pirate.
If the pirate they choose is on the ghost team, then that pirate will be publicly exorcised for all to see. Hooray, a new human is on the ship!
If, however, the pirate they choose is on the human team, then things will look bleak for The Prosecutor. They will immediately be thrown overboard (in an overboarding that does not create a ghost), and they will lose their prosecutor power for the remainder of the voyage.
How confident will The Prosecutor feel? What opportunities are there for bluffing and second-guessing? The Prosecutor can appear with any passive trait, including The Tainted. Is the ultimate way to make it look like you're on the human team betraying all your fellow ghosts?
Valentine Voyages!
Find romance on the seven seas with Valentine Voyages!
This February, we’re again celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Valentine Voyages! Running from 7th February - 21st February, celebrate the season of love with a festival of romance, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
A Mysterious Benefactor
Play a Trait or Traits+ game during Valentine Voyages, and you may attract the attention of A Mysterious Benefactor!
Voyages blessed by a mysterious benefactor will have one extra special secret. Every day when a job fails, the mysterious benefactor will send a secret note to a random pirate. That note will expose some information about the crew's traits! They might share a trait that nobody on the crew currently has, or, tell you the trait someone on the crew has.
With a mysterious benefactor sharing all the crew's darkest secrets, how can you bluff your way out of an unexpected surprise reveal?
Seasonal Trait: The Lovers
During Valentine Voyages, you may encounter one of the seasonal traits, The Lovers!
The Lovers always appear as a pair, with two randomly chosen pirates from the crew both having the trait 'The Lovers'. When either pirate with The Lovers trait goes overboard, the other pirate will become Heartbroken, automatically going overboard the following day after the job completes. If a heartbroken pirate happens to go overboard before the end of the next day's job, they won't go overboard twice!
Be warned - if a pirates goes overboard due to heartbreak and they're a human, one randomly selected other pirate will become a ghost. Now that's spooky!
Seasonal Trait: The Admirer
During Valentine Voyages, you may encounter one of the seasonal traits, The Admirer!
During the first day, The Admirer must choose a target of their admiration from the crew. The Admirer's team will then immediately change to match the pirate they chose. Not only that, but every time The Admirer's target changes team, The Admirer's team will change too! That means if the target of their admiration becomes a ghost... Well, you know what you have to do!
The Admirer's team will no longer change through other means (if they're a human, they can't join the ghost team unless their target pirate is haunted), so watch out for any very tricky Admirer plays!
Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts
During Valentine Voyages, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! The "Love Letter" Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyage, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the "Love Letter" event. A randomly chosen pirate must commit to sending a love letter to a pirate of their choice. What secrets will this letter reveal? The pirate may choose to either share their team, or their trait, with their lover. What information will they reveal, and more importantly, why did they choose to share that particular piece of information?
Love Letter Bounties
What's this? The crew has received a mysterious letter, emblazoned with a heart motif? What could this mysterious love letter mean? It seems that there's a series of tasks for you to complete throughout Valentine Voyage's, and each one rewards you with... a special heart-shaped box!? What could be inside?
