Paper Pirates

Oktoberfest on the Ocean!

Grab a sausage and celebrate Oktoberfest!

As we see out September, we’re celebrating the ninth Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Oktoberfest on the Ocean! Running from 18th to 30th September, celebrate the end of the season with a shindig dedicated to pretzels, sausages, chicken dancing and more, with a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!

Seasonal Trait: The Brewmaster

The Brewmaster is here, and they're ready to get the party started! When you have a Brewmaster aboard, they'll be asked to set the vibe of the ship during the first day. Whichever vibe they choose will mix up the Paper Pirates voting rules!

There are a total of four vibes The Brewmaster can pick for the ship:

  • Aggressive Vibes - Grants each pirate one additional voting power
  • Chaotic Vibes - Instead of voting from Stowaway to Captain, the crew will vote in a randomised order each day
  • Determined Vibes - Removes the crew's ability to pass their vote
  • Energetic Vibes - If nobody has gone overboard after the Captain has voted, a second round of voting begins. Votes from the previous round carry forward!

Whichever vibe they pick will stay in effect for the rest of the voyage. However, each day The Brewmaster doesn't play in, they can choose to change up the vibe, and bring a new mood to the party. How will having The Brewmaster aboard change the way your crew votes people over?

The band is here!

To help get the party started, a collection of instruments brand new for Oktoberfest 2023 will be available at Sam Sherbot's Outfit Shop aboard the Ship Shop for the duration of Oktoberfest on the Ocean. Instruments can be worn by pirates in either the Hand or the Belt outfit slots, depending on the instrument type, and there's enough for everyone on even the biggest crews to grab a different instrument!

The full list of instruments available is:

  • Belt - Xylophone
  • Belt - Guitar (Acoustic)
  • Belt - Guitar (Electric)
  • Belt - Big Horn
  • Hands - Tuba
  • Hands - Trumpet
  • Hands - French Horn
  • Hands - Violin
  • Hands - Cello
  • Hands - Harp
  • Hands - Cymbal

As with all limited time outfit pieces, if you grab an instrument now you'll be able to use it all year round so make sure you grab some gold and catch these limited time pieces while you can!

Once the event’s over, the hats will disappear from your collection until next year, so be sure to wear them while you can!

The “Biggest Bratwurst” Event!

Go on a sailing adventure during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and any day when there’s a successful job there is a chance you may encounter the “Biggest Bratwurst” event! The pirates stop for a cook-out, each grabbing a sausage from the grill. Some of the sausages are much bigger than the others though, and everyone knows a pirate needs a full stomach to carry out the most important duties on the ship. The bigger your meal, the higher your rank on the ship! So watch out, if you pull a chipolata, you might end up as Stowaway!

The Biggest Bratwurst event is sure to mix things up amongst the crew, changing who’s next to each other and therefore who’s playing in for different groups of jobs together. Not only that, but if you’re playing a trait game, you might want to be extra careful of who ends up next to The Sensitive!

Oktoberfest on the Ocean Bots

Invite bots into your game during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and you may encounter any of four unique bots! Look out for Chicken Bot, Hans Botmann, Ida Botmann and Bot Dog, all of whom are eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! These bots will only join your games during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, so take the chance to meet them now before they chicken dance away for the rest of the year!

The Pirate Pool Party!

Make a splash with The Pirate Pool Party!

Across June and July, we’re celebrating with the wettest Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, The Pirate Pool Party! Running from 24th June to 22nd July, celebrate the warmer weather with a party dedicated to all things poolside, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!

Seasonal Traits: The Shark & The Bait

The Shark and The Bait appear as a pair, and one is hunting the other! In any game where The Shark and The Bait appear, The Shark has a unique victory condition. If they're able to get The Bait thrown overboard three times - through events and/or voting - they will automatically and instantly achieve a solo victory!

Is someone behaving suspiciously? A bit too keen to throw someone overboard? Maybe they're The Shark! Is someone claiming to be The Bait? Maybe they just don't want to go overboard and really they're The Cursed? Hmm, tricky times ahead crew...

To make things even more challenging for the crew, The Bait will always appear as a ghost when their team is revealed through traits and events. Be vigilant crew!

Party Favours for all the Guests!

Any good party comes with goodies to take home, and Pirate Pool Party is no exception! Play Paper Pirates during the Pirate Pool Party and you'll get a special bounty task each day. Complete the task to open a special party favour, which contains some unique outfit customisation options you can't obtain anywhere else!

There's three outfits, for a combined total of fifteen items, to collect through The Pirate Pool Party. Make sure to complete your tasks every day, and get ready to dress up!

Go on a sailing adventure during The Pirate Pool Party, and any day when there’s a failed job there is a chance you may encounter the “Spooky Sandcastles” event. Encountering some mysterious haunted sandcastles, the crew must each choose one of the three to hide amongst! But be wary, for once all pirates have picked a hiding place, the most popular pick will reveal how many of the pirates choosing to hide amongst it was actually a ghost!

Watch out for pirates choosing to hide amongst their peers, or those choosing to go it alone hoping not to be discovered. Whether pirates are jumping in with others or not, there’s bound to be deception around the spooky sandcastles!

Get your Party On in the Photo Booth

To celebrate The Pirate Pool Party, there is one limited-time Background and one limited-time Foil available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

Look out for Crabbot, Sandy Botney and Wes Overbot who are all eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! These bots will only join your games during The Pirate Pool Party, so take the chance to meet them now before they swim away for the rest of the year!

History and Mystery Update

Recap your voyage in more detail with the History and Mystery Update!

Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the History and Mystery Update, featuring a refreshed game history feature, two new traits, a new event, and more!

New and Improved Game History

Our end-of-game recap screen, the Game History, was built for a simpler time when pirates didn't have things like traits. Although it's grown with us over time, it was starting to fall behind in providing a transparent recap of everything that happened in the game. So, we rebuilt it!

The new Game History includes more precise details, such as letting you know who voted for a Mutiny, as well as better handling of trait-influenced team changes and clearer indicators of when team changes happen.

Each day, you can review the job and who played in, see a summary of the events that took place, and check the outcome of voting. If you want to dig a little deeper, the details panel on the right will walk you through the day in detail.

You can also check who voted for who, who became a ghost, and what the probabilities were, in the Voting Chart!

Last but not least, there's a bigger, bolder, and better final page in the Game History that more clearly indicates who on the crew were on the winning team. Open up the chart here and you can see exactly how your game played out over time!

We love the new Game History and hope that it will help you better dissect your games. This was a huge project given the variety of voyages, and there might be the odd event or outcome that's missing text. We'll be keeping our eye out and patching these up as we go!

New Trait: The Silent

One of two new traits for the History and Mystery Update is The Silent!

The Silent's votes are always secret. That means it will always appear as if they passed their vote, even if they didn't. Should The Silent cast enough votes to throw someone overboard, the voting will still end immediately. If you're The Silent and want to stay hidden, make sure you're casting votes where you won't be exposed.

And if you're not The Silent? Be wary. Joke votes sink boats! And with The Silent on board, you can never know exactly who might have been ghosted when a human goes overboard...

New Trait: The Gambler

Another new trait for the History and Mystery Update is The Gambler!

On days when they don't play in, The Gambler is offered two events. One of these will have a high chance of happening, and one of them will have a low chance of happening. Whether The Gambler is a ghost or a human, the high-chance event will normally be good for their team, while the low-chance event will be bad for their team.

Are you willing to take a risk on a good event knowing what bad things might happen? Can you get away with risking it all and claiming that your events were the other way round?

Whether on the ghost team or the human team, The Gambler is sure to have you questioning whether you feel lucky!

New Event: Counting the Treasure

Our new event for the History and Mystery update is Counting the Treasure!

In a Counting the Treasure event, one pirate will be randomly selected to take on responsibility for counting the treasure. But never fear, they'll have help from three other pirates! Those three pirates will all see a number of coins on their device: Either 1, 2, or 3 coins. Their job is to tell the counting pirate how many coins they can see, so the counting pirate can add them up and report the total on their device.

If you count correctly - amazing! The crew get another treasure! However, if you get it wrong, in the confusion it seems one of your current treasure will be whisked away before you can know it.

How much do you trust the three pirates chosen to help count the treasure? If it all goes wrong, who will you blame...?

Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of Spring Sailing is the seasonal trait, The Spring Chicken! Play a trait game, and one of the crew may find themselves with this happy-go-lucky, seasonal appropriate trait.

Each day, when The Spring Chicken is not the Captain, they will spring forward one rank of the crew at the start of the event phase! This happens even if there's no other event taking place! The eggs all contain events, and whichever egg they choose will instantly trigger that event! All the other pirates on the boat will get a clue, showing them a picture of an egg, and a description of the event that will happen. Make sure you communicate to the egg hunter to let them know what might happen for each egg - but watch out for the ghosts, who might give you a bad description, or tell you fibs about the event squirreled away inside!

All Together Update

Set Sail with Random Players with the All Together Update!

Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the All Together Update, featuring a new trait, public listing for games and more!

Public Games

When creating a Paper Pirates lobby, you now have the option of advertising your game publicly. Tick the "Public Games" tick box from the game customisation screen, and your lobby will be advertised for anyone to join via Spectator mode. Players joining public games will still have to join via a web browser on a connected device, but public games offer a way to recruit a crew even when playing solo!

Remember, you can always mute or kick a pirate who joins your game and misbehaves to stop them contributing to the game any further. To do so, just click on a pirate in-game and choose the mute or kick option as appropriate. You can even do this from a lobby!

If you're looking to find more pirates to join your games, you're always welcome to join the Paper Pirates Discord server where you can advertise your games for anyone to join.

Mid-Game Spectating

To enhance the spectating experience, we've tightened up a few screws and enabled spectating mid-game. Whenever you join, you will have to wait for the start of the next day, but then your spectated game will be perfectly in sync with the host! You'll still get all the coins for the whole voyage, but note that your Round History will only display days for which you were already spectating.

New Trait: The Legion

Our new trait for the All Together Update is The Legion!

The Legion is a trait that is always assigned to a ghost at the start of a game, just like The Tainted. Whenever the Legion would become a ghost while a ghost, an extra ghost joins their collection. If they would become a human, one of the ghosts leaves their collection, but they remain a ghost. The only way to cleanse The Legion and return them to humanity is to clear their entire ghost collection!

The Legion always starts the game with one extra ghost in their collection, so at the very least you'll need to get them overboard twice, or give them two exorcisms, before they turn human. Never trust when you think someone is a human, because they could be The Legion!

New Trait: The Sleuth

As a reward for finding clues during Steam Mystery Fest, the collective efforts of pirates across the entire ocean unlocked a new Trait, The Sleuth! Although The Sleuth has been in the game for a few weeks now, we haven't formally introduced them!

The Sleuth has the power to investigate a pirate to see whether they have ever disobeyed at any point in the voyage so far. They won't know when they disobeyed, but this is still a very useful ability! In order to investigate a pirate, The Sleuth must use up a lead. Leads are earned every day that there are at least two disobeys in a job - so the more ghosts you have, the more likely your Sleuth is to find leads!

Additionally, The Sleuth always starts the game with one lead, so even if the ghosts are being on their best behaviour, they might not be able to hide from The Sleuth for long!

New Event: Disagreement

During a Disagreement event, two pirates from the centre of the ship have a falling out and decide to move away from each other. Each pirate will move as far away as they can, taking on the ranks of second-in-command and Cabin Boy.

New Event: Crew's Revenge

During a Crew's Revenge event, the entire crew will have the opportunity to take revenge on the most bloodthirsty pirate. If you've successfully thrown the most pirates overboard, you might find yourself facing a very angry crew!

The Crew's Revenge event works like the Mutiny event, so if more than half of the crew vote to take revenge, the bloodthirstiest pirate will get thrown overboard. If they were a human, then any of the pirates that agreed to get revenge could become a ghost!

Join the Paper Pirates Community

As always, don’t forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm GMT on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Let’s Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if you’re looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Big Birthday Bash!

Happy birthday, Paper Pirates!

It's Paper Pirates' third birthday, and we’re celebrating with the return of The Big Birthday Bash! Running from 28th February - 14th March, celebrate the anniversary of the game's launch with a festival of partying, and a whole host of anniversary goodies in Paper Pirates!

Seasonal Trait: The Magician

Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of The Big Birthday Bash is the seasonal trait, The Magician! Play a trait game during The Big Birthday Bash, and one of the crew may find themselves playing as The Magician.

When the entire crew have finished voting, but no pirate has gone overboard, The Magician will have the opportunity to cast a magic vote. This magic vote has three voting power, and can be cast for any pirate (other than The Magician themselves). The crew won't know who The Magician is, unless they can figure it out through deductive reasoning!

The magic vote still counts as voting for a pirate to go overboard, so if The Magician throws a human overboard they run the risk of becoming a ghost. Question is... who are they?

The “Let Them Eat Cake” Event!

Go on a sailing adventure during The Big Birthday Bash, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the “Let Them Eat Cake” event. The crew will divide up a huge birthday cake, taking the chance to blow out the candles one by one. It's believed that the last person who blows out a candle will get to make a wish... what will they wish for, and will their wish come true?!

Birthday Gift Bounties

Every day during The Big Birthday Bash the crew will receive a special birthday gift bounty! If you complete the assigned task, you can open a present, and inside you will find... a special cosmetic surprise! There are twelve different cosmetics in total to collect, so make sure to collect your birthday gifts during the seasonal celebration!

Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts

During The Big Birthday Bash, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! If you buy a customisation option during The Big Birthday Bash, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so don’t delay and buy today!

Developer Bots Jump Aboard

Invite bots into your game during The Big Birthday Bash, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with one or three bots that mimic the Iteration Games crew! They’ll only join your games during The Big Birthday Bash, but these bots have their own personality and appearances modelled after the Paper Pirates developers.

It's the Steam Mystery Fest...

There's a thief in our midst!

It's time for the Steam Mystery Fest celebration, and it seems the Paper Pirates crew have a mystery of their very own to solve. Someone's swiped all the treasure, and we don't know who! Not to panic though, The Captain has been in touch with world-famous detective, Tabotha Tabs, and she's accepted the challenge of coming aboard and figuring out exactly whodunnit. The Steam Mystery Fest runs from Monday 20th - Monday 27th February, so we need to solve the mystery before it ends!

There's a mystery to be solved!

Set sail every day during the Steam Mystery Fest, and you'll find a clue. These clues will surely help you to track down the guilty party. Not only that, if all the Paper Pirate crews on the seven seas work together, there's bound to be a special reward for everyone!

Huge Paper Pirates discount!

During the Mystery Fest, we want everyone to get involved in finding clues and solving the mystery. If you've had your eye on Paper Pirates for a while, or you've got friends looking to jump aboard, you'll be able to pick the game up for 75% off during the entire celebration!

Valentine Voyages!

Find romance on the seven seas with Valentine Voyages!

This February, we’re again celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Valentine Voyages! Running from 7th February - 21st February, celebrate the season of love with a festival of romance, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!

Love Letter Bounties

What's this? The crew has received a mysterious letter, emblazoned with a heart motif? What could this mysterious love letter mean? It seems that there's a series of tasks for you to complete throughout Valentine Voyage's, and each one rewards you with... a special heart-shaped box!? What could be inside?

Seasonal Trait: The Admirer

During Valentine Voyages, you may encounter the seasonal trait, The Admirer!

During the first day, The Admirer must choose a target of their admiration from the crew. The Admirer's team will then immediately change to match the pirate they chose. Not only that, but every time The Admirer's target changes team, The Admirer's team will change too! That means if the target of their admiration becomes a ghost... Well, you know what you have to do!

The Admirer's team will no longer change through other means (if they're a human, they can't join the ghost team unless their target pirate is haunted), so watch out for any very tricky Admirer plays!

Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts

During Valentine Voyages, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! If you buy a customisation option during Valentine Voyages, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so don’t delay and buy today!

Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyages, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the “Cupid’s Arrow” event. A random member of the crew is given the opportunity to fire Cupid’s arrow at another. Whoever they fire it at will have their role changed to match the person who fired the arrow - whether they were human, or ghost! Keep track of the arrow, and see if you can deduce whose role is what as you forge ahead on your voyage.

The "Love Letter" Event!

Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyage, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the "Love Letter" event. A randomly chosen pirate must commit to sending a love letter to a pirate of their choice. What secrets will this letter reveal? The pirate may choose to either share their team, or their trait, with their lover. What information will they reveal, and more importantly, why did they choose to share that particular piece of information?

Valentine Celebrations in the Photo Booth

To celebrate Valentine Voyages, there is a limited-time Foil available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

Invite bots into your game during Valentine Voyages, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with one or two super romantic guests, out to help you find love at sea! They’ll only join your games during Valentine Voyages, but these bots have their own personality and appearances for you to enjoy.
