Paradox Vector

Update 0.9.3.2

Old One Lore

Learn about the Old Ones and what they were doing on Earth millions of years before the dawn of humanity. Find these special rooms with statues of the Old Ones, and you may find some interesting, and perhaps even useful, information.

Save State Fix

Paradox Vector allows you to save the current state of your game. However, it was causing some problems if players tried to use it between sessions. Now, it will automatically save the game at the start of each level, or whenever the player presses F5. The load state function (F6) will only work within a given dungeon, it will not work between play sessions.

Boss Fight!

The game now has a final boss. Instead of just ending with a message, it will test your skills, either physical or mental, and give you a taste of what's to come in future updates. I do hope it's not too hard ... or too easy. Let me know what you think!

More Press for Paradox Vector

Paradox Vector got a nice shout out on Tech Raptor!

https://techraptor.net/content/screenshot-survey-just-like-the-classics?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

I don't have a marketing bone in my body, so I am not sure if sharing these things actually helps or hurts. What do you think? Does this make you excited to hear more about the game, or do you think it is just more noise?

Anyway, I have been spending some time working on the game too. I've been including some of the background lore in the game itself. I hope this will help to build up an atmosphere of what ... dread ... foreboding ... existential terror?

We'll see how that works, I guess!

Paradox Vector - the Story Behind the Game

IndieDB asked me to write up another article about Paradox Vector. So I told the story of how the game evolved over time, and where the ideas came from. The article, like my last article about how to create a vector graphics game, is featured on their front page...

Here is a direct link to the new article: https://www.indiedb.com/games/paradox-vector/news/paradox-vector-the-story-behind-the-game

In other news, I am adding a bit of background lore to the game. In the next update, you will be able to find out more about the Old Ones and their history. I also hope to get an actual new enemy into the game in the near future, so keep a look out!

Making a Modern Vector Graphics Game

I made a tutorial on how I do vector graphics in my game Paradox Vector. I hope it is useful! Let me know if any parts of it are unclear, or require more detail.

Elder Thing Update

Animating the Elder Thing ... here is the idle animation as it appears in-game

First Old One In-Game

Here is a rough version of the Old One as it will appear in-game...

This is not the completed artwork, but just a start of the outline. I will add details. add animation and give it some dangerous A.I. before the next update.

3D Rendering of Next Creature

My game Paradox Vector is getting an overhaul. I am revising the story to evoke the tales of H.P. Lovecraft. Here is a rough 3D rendering of an Old One, which will be the next creature I add to the game...

I can't wait to see this rendered in vector graphics!

Update 0.9.3.1

The new game engine has been giving me a little trouble. It looks like it stemmed from any variables that were not initialized.

I have gone through and made sure all variables are initialized to 0, so the game should not be crashing anymore.

Specifically, when a jellyfish creature attacks you, it checks if the attack sound is playing. This sound is stored as a variable, so when it checks, if that variable was not initialized to zero, it would not know how to interpret the variable, causing the game to crash.

This was not a problem with the game before, because the old engine seemed to be more forgiving with uninitialized variables. However, this is good, because those errors would have gone unnoticed, and may have led to worse things like memory leaks and such.

The new engine is more strict, but therefor should be more stable.

When I play test, I know where all the enemies are, so they generally don't get much opportunity to attack me :) So that's why I was able to play without setting off the crash.

Hopefully the game will run smoothly now. Thanks for your patience!

Here are another couple of Lovecraft inspired creatures that may work their way into the game some time soon!

Update 0.9.3

I have been at a creative standstill for a few weeks. However, I have re-imagined the overall story for Paradox Vector, and have decided to base it in the universe of H.P. Lovecraft.

This gives be a wealth of background information to draw from, and inspiration for new creatures and environments.

Now I have a clear path moving forward on how the game will proceed.

Here is a sneak peak at the next enemy ... more to come.
