Hello, world! Midway Branch of Penkura is now updated to 0.1.9.3 MW 6



For the moment this is the biggest Midway patch released since the Midway Branch started. We will provide a detailed report on the Midway Branch results since it was open to the public with the full release of patch 0.1.9.3 to the Main Branch.

Till then, in this Midway Patch, we introduced a new building called Magnetic Wind Turbine. It is one of the power production buildings we wanted to add in the patch 0.2.0 but because of the balance issues and reports from our community, we not only decided to add it sooner but also rebalance the power consumption of MMC when creating certain items. With these changes, the early game should be a little bit more manageable.



With the addition of Magnetic Wind Turbines, we needed to create an entirely new weather system, for the moment weather system will control only the wind (its power and direction) and foliage on the map, but with the development of the game, we will be adding more systems to it. As of now, we plan to add standard weather behaviors that can be found in nearly all games such as, rain, heavy rain, storm, snow, dust storms, and so on. We plan to add a few Penkura only related weathers but, more on that in patch 0.2.+.

After extensive comments from the community, tips, and even ideas, we will be making changes to the RTS, RPG, Inventory System, and progression systems. We will make sure that the game feels as it felt at the start of the development to not alienate players that are with us from the start, but we will be adding new base management systems that will make the game more interesting. All the changes will be introduced after the full release of the 0.1.9.3 patch, in the Midway Branch 0.2.0 MW 1.

  • Main Menu was offset off the screen on 4k monitors.

  • Archeological base doors were affected by the environment from both sides.

  • Bots didn't activate proper functions on power management after loading the game.

  • Not all collision triggers were loading at Command Center Armor Mesh.

  • Oculus Bot was capable of glitching through collision, which triggered in-game security systems pushing the bot on top of the model (in this case buildings) to not allow it to fall under the ground.

  • Player was able to interact with Lazarus Bed through its outer armor.

  • Solar Panel and Ore Extractors animations didn't trigger properly when the player spawns after game load.

  • Added Gamma settings to the Video Options.

  • Options settings not properly save each time the main menu is closed. Even if the player forgot to apply and save it directly in the main menu.

  • Added Sprint Toggle to the Key Binding Menu.

  • Crouch is now more smooth. (added additional check to make sure there aren't hitches in the animation).

  • Added Crouch Toggle to the Key Binding Menu (on by default).

Hello, world! Midway Branch of Penkura is now updated to 0.1.9.3 MW 5.1



In this Midway patch, we are adding a minor security code that presumably should fix bugs with steam activating SteamVR whenever Vive or Oculus Rift is connected to PC.

We also changed how the Maintenance Platform calculates characters located on the recharge platform. From now on, first entering character (bot or player) will receive Platforms focus trigger. Each additional bot on the platform will also be taken into calculation but not printed on the main screen. The moment the main trigger bot/character leaves, the platform will trigger additional checks to make sure that there is no other bots/characters on the platform, if it detects an additional bot, the focus trigger will be switch on to them. This solution fixes few bugs, and makes the entire recharge process smoother.

In this Midway Patch we focused on the atmosphere in the game, the colors, lights intensity, texture rendering, updating few models, but most of all. We moved from generated color correction system to created by hand with over 21 color curves LionsDome system.

Thanks to this we were able to make the look of the game, more vibrant (albeit less realistic), adding more color to nights time of the game, increasing overall brightness but most of all, making the main gas giant moveable.



The gas Giant movement will now affect day and nighttime brightness of the entire level, color intensity, and it's now programmable by our modular sky system. This improvement will allow us to add special events and triggers that can happen only when the gas giant is in a specific place in the night sky. Increasing aggression in some of the creatures or affecting some of the buildings.

Night light coming from Gas Giant (reflected from the main star) also changes its position correctly to the gas giant position, thanks to that shadows generated by that light respect planetary and star rotation night and day.

  • Planet is now moveable, properly reflecting light from the star.

  • Depending on the position of the planet, nights can become 50% of its normal brightness to 200%.

  • We removed the automatic color adjustments from the sun position, and created by hand entire world coloring. (entire 24-hour sun rotation).

  • Visual update to Double Door mesh.

  • LionsMat system updated to version 3. LionsMat is now able to render multiple textures on a single drawcall while still providing high-quality textures with different resolutions.

Hello, world! Midway Branch of Penkura is now updated to 0.1.9.3 MW 4



In this Midway patch, we made drastic changes to the CCC UI. Not only we refresh it to adjust it to the new in-game model, but we also added a lot of new functionality. Some that were requested by the community, and a few that we planned to add since the beginning.



Players will be able to change the base name, read operations logs, check base stats, and more.



We also put a lot of care into increasing the quality of environmental effects such as gasses clouds created by spores from new foliage added in patch 0.1.9.2.



The entire area surrounding new gasses clouds should see a massive performance boost by up to 74% as we created our own material based emitters. Those emitters will drastically increase quality and performance in the upcoming new levels (that focus more on swamps and marshes).

In this Midway patch, we focused on MPS (scanning tool) and the ability to scan more objects in the environment. Most of the objects within the game are now scan-able. Some of them provide useful information, and others important to the plot elements (for those interested in the in-game story).



We added new systems to allows us to add even more scan-able objects in the future. Thanks to this immersion should increase and story creation should become much easier in the future patches.

Midway Patch 0.1.9.3 MW 2 focuses on adding even more items to the pull of objects affected by the corrosion/dirt, graphically improving the look of the Small Landing Area, and fixing bugs found by our community.

The patch is also featuring an experimental object merging sub-system, for the moment it focuses generally on smaller objects such as holo signs, cave pipes, boxes, barrels, and other similar meshes.
Thanks to this system players should feel a minor performance boost, later on, we will work on adding this system to even smaller objects.

  • Gas Gaint now reflects stars light on to landscape, providing correct shadow rotation, and coloring.

  • Beacon button will now change the color of its text in the "Planetary Surface Overlook" if it's our current position.

  • Change function name of "Extensive Extraction" in Ore Extractor to "Extensive Ore Extraction Mode", to minimize confusion.

  • Save and Load system can now adjust to new furniture (storage) added to the game by the developer, it can also adjust save to load the content of one furniture into another in case of furniture switch was needed.

  • Information window of a currently selected beacon in the "Planetary Surface Overlook" will now adjust its size to the amount of information in it.

  • Global Music and Global Ambient will now respect the save system and instantly change on load rather than gradually adjust.

  • Visual improvement to holographic keyboards, they also generate their own emanating light.

  • Visual improvement to Hydrogel Tank.

  • Added new sound effect when player "Journal" is updated.

  • Decrease in draw calls in Lamps, Hydrogel Tank, Power Storage. (very minor performance boost).

  • Increased the item name, and message board text size.

  • Failed Objective Bar was removed from Objectives Window. (failed missions are now stored in the completed objectives bar).

A small update to the development workflow. Soon, we are going to open up Penkura to new levels, new mechanics, and most of all completely new systems that require a large amount of testing, to make sure everything is working correctly.

That may lead to updates on the main branch of Penkura to slow down, even though sometimes there is a need to release a swift bug fix.

Because of that, we are opening a "midway" branch of Penkura to everyone who already owns Penkura. This branch is the same as the main one with the difference that it will be updated a few times a week sometimes a few times a day. On this branch errors and bugs found by the players will be repaired as fast as possible and released for testing as soon as possible.

This branch as the name implies is a "Midway" between two patches, this branch is not an experimental version that showcases content that may never appear, everybody can enter and check what's coming soon to Penkura or in case of experiencing a bug on the main branch, be able to continue their progress with possible solutions and/or fixes. At the end of the Midway patch development process, all previous patches released on the "midway" branch will be zip up and moved to the main branch as an update that you all know.

Work on Penkura was always open to interested members of the community, we want to extend this to give you even more access, to show the workflow and changes made to the game, as soon as they are available.

Hello, world! Penkura is now patched to version 0.1.9.2.2



This small update is focused mostly on reported bug fixes, related to moving the project to a newer version of the unreal engine.

But as always we wanted to add something extra, scanner (M.P.S) is updated with a slightly bigger screen, and it will provide more information on selected items. (more info on the patch notes).



Also, we have added visual and sound cues to the Bio-Meter the moment the player drops to 1% and below in oxygen and nutrient.

  • When connecting to RTS mode or Bot Control, wrong Anti Aliasing was used.

  • Minor typos fixed in CCC.

  • Neurocore in MedBay didn't react after the first conversation (which is correct) but It didn't show an empty dialog window.

  • Metos Wing was unscannable.

  • Argus bot (type Oculus) could be added to the bot ownership list twice if missions didn't load from saving before CCC creates its list.

  • Player was able to use items from the quick slot bar when interacting with computers or in the middle of a conversation with NPC.

  • When interacting with the Computer Screen or starting a dialog, the play holstered his weapon after focusing on animation rather than before.

  • Player didn't reequip his weapon/tool after using the computer screen or ending the conversation.

  • Character View had a chance to not reset properly after ending manual control of a bot.

  • MMC didn't refresh its construction list after changing its slot sequence, when "create all" is active.

  • MMC will now always create the first item on its list rather than check item ID and its position on the construction list.

  • After death Metos Drone and Metos Warrior bones starter to twitch because of the physics system not registering that animations are no longer active.

  • NPC bones collision reset to default disabling ragdoll physics.

  • Neurocore save slot didn't refresh its time imprint info if "Quick Save" was used while Neurocore save slots are visible on the screen.

  • Save Icon didn't appear after the second load when using the "Quick Save" function.

  • Activating Steam Overlay, broke some of the background calculation.

  • When selecting bot in CCC, the current status always defaults to idle. (rather than checking if the bot is on/off).

  • Oculus showed the wrong preview when selecting in CCC.

  • Bot could have zero power consumption if the player exits bot control while jumping with sprint activated and deactivating nightvision at the same time.

  • M.P.S screen increase by 15%.

  • UI of M.P.S increase by 15%, font size by 10%, icons lowered by 15%.

  • Added location bound sound cue to Bio-Meter activated when the player is below 1% of oxygen or nutrient.

  • Added light and UI visual cue when the player is below 1 % of oxygen or nutrient, status is triggered once per status change to save performance.

  • Oxygen, Nutrient, and Energy calculation were moved from player direct calculation to globalize system, saving minor performance and fixing issues connected to activating third part overlays.

  • M.P.B max energy increases from 1000 to 1500.

  • Oculus Bot max energy increases from 800 to 1200.

  • CCC now informs the player of Bot power requirements/consumption when selected.

We are releasing a minor patch to fix rendering problems connected with shader operating on high-end graphic cards, (Fatal Error). The fix is experimental, and it may fail (as we aren't able to cover all the testing procedures at such short notice). We will be still monitoring the project for possible crash related problems and make sure to fix them as fast as possible.
