Planetary Defense: An Orbital Turret Defense System

3.0 Update

Greetings Defender! Natedog769 here with a major update to the game as well as a few quality of life changes

Let’s start with the big one.
The main game system has been changed for all modes, Invasion, Asteroids, UFOs, and Lunar.

  • Previously the invasion system was timer based. Every 2 minutes the rounds would increment and then activate more hazards to be released and would play for 17 rounds for a max play time around 34 minutes. However the later rounds would become very overwhelming and most players could only last for about 10 minutes.
  • Now we have a new wave system. It will play in a more familiar manner where each round has a set amount of Hazards to defeat and the round will only advance when all the Hazards are defeated and off screen.
  • The Invasion and Lunar game will feature 20 waves to defeat where the UFO and Asteroid games will feature 10 waves. You can still play the original game mode now called Impossible if you feel up for that endurance challenge.


Other quality of life changes

  • Tooltips: There are now tooltips to help display facility functions and explain their effects with better clarity.
  • Frigate Fixes: Frigates are gun ships that target and destroy Sat-Turrets and you are supposed to destroy those turrets however they had a particle effect that would play continuously which is now fixed and they now log points and coins as well
  • Coin Fixes: Mining rates and inflation rates had no limits but now they do. Mining rates could go into the negatives and inflation rates would go into the thousands making that mechanic unplayable
  • UFO Fixes: The Green Getter UFO had some errors, those are now all fixed and will properly steal a Sat-Turret or a projectile.
  • Frigate Fixes: The Frigates were having an error not properly receiving damage and special warhead effects and that is now fixed
  • Boss MegaDeathStars: DeathStars also were not receiving the bonus damage of some of the warhead effects and their death did not reward the player for their defeat and that is now fixed.
  • Typo Fixed: in the help menu it reflected the old “hover over the icon” instead of the “click the icon to open the UI panel”
  • Console Updates: The console at the bottom of the screen was used to display all types of information from Facility function to quirky comments almost like a pseudo tool tip however it proved to be ineffective to display critical information, too hard to read at times and would be prone for important information getting missed. Now many of the quirky messages have been removed and many of the function details are now tooltips leaving only certain critical info to be displayed in the console.
  • Audio fix: the Surface Cannon’s sound effects were missing its mixer setting so it was always loud and wouldn't get adjusted with the setting but now they do.

I am here to share this newest patch with you. Many were some quality of life improvements as well as some changes to the balance of gameplay. I thank you for playing my game, I am keeping up with it as much as I can and always trying to improve it.

Planet Shield and Generator


Many changes were applied to the Shield and Generator mainly to help with the player surviving a little better. The starting Shield Hits was improved along with regen upgrade line getting a few more changes. The Shield would regenerate 1 hit at a time but now with the new 2R upgrade the shield will regenerate 2 hits to help survive particularly in the late game

Starting Max Shield Hits 3 > 4
Hit Upgrade 2 adds 1 > 2
Hit Upgrade 3 adds 2 > 3
Regen Upgrade 1 cost 222 > 333
Regen Upgrade 2 cost 333 > 444
Regen Upgrade 2 time buff 20% > 25%
Regen Upgrade 3 cost 444 > 555
Regen upgrade 3 changed from time improvement to regenerating 2 shield hits instead of 1


Lunar Update

Lunar Update


Greetings Planetary Defenders! I am excited to present to you the New Lunar update to kick off the new year! This update is another substantial one containing the new game mode Lunar! This adds the Moon to your defenses containing its own 3 Facilities, another Surface Cannon, its own Sat-Turret Factory, and a brand new facility the Specter Drone Factory! Aside from these new additions several fixes have been applied to different areas. I hope you enjoy this update!

Lunar Game Mode!


The Lunar Game mode as mentioned adds the Moon as an extra planetary like base to the outer rim of your orbits. The Game will more or less be like the original Invasion game, containing waves of Asteroids and UFOs and Bosses, but the number of orbits around the planet is reduced from 7 to 5 and the moon sits outside of those orbits, on its own orbit, with 3 orbits around it. Orbits, orbits, orbits. It's the name of the game.
On the Moon is 3 facilities,
The Surface Cannon : This will target the mouse position to give that extra shot from another angle, This cannon adds that extra bit of fire power outside the normal range on the planet.
A Sat-Turret Factory : The Moon has 3 of its own orbits you can launch Sat-Turrets into to make the moon into its own death base

The Drone Factory

: Introducing the new defense mechanic, Specters! Specters are unmanned starfighters. They are completely autonomous systems that will patrol an area and engage with any hazards that it comes across. Instead of following an orbit they will patrol an area of space.

Specters and the Drone Factory


The Factory works like the Sat-Turret Factory and Munitions plant where you have a selection of modules to work with to create different combat Drones to patrol the void of space. Instead of setting their position to an orbit you will drop a patrol point that will be the center of their area of control.
Modules of Specter Drones

  • Pilot - determines the patrol behavior, random, flock, or circling as well as their range of patrol area
  • Hull - the hit points of the drone
  • Gun System - like the Sat-Turrets determines the fire type between single fire, spread, and burst as well as speed and rate of fire
  • The Engine - determines the patrol and combat speed
  • Sensor Array - the awareness of the agent and its speed to react


Revamped gameplay and improvements


Controls
You can now use WASD to move the camera around the area
Peek, you click and hold the middle mouse and can move to look and on release it will snap back to the starting position
Pressing space will now recenter the camera over the planet
The camera will focus on Facility panels when they are opened.

Changes to the Main game mode of Invasion
Round time has been reduced from 3 minutes to 2
The Boss times have been reduced as well from 10 minutes to 7 minutes
There is a new spawner called the Hazard Keeper, this spawner keeps track of how many spawns it has out and will be restricted to a max, this means when a UFO is destroyed it can send out the next one right away. This is ideal particularly for early game where there won't be a long wait time for the next one if it's destroyed quickly or prevent it from being overwhelmed by not having a constant spawn.
New Orbit Marker : As a new visual effect there is now an orbit marker to help indicate the orbits that are used by the Sat-Turrets.
New Digi Coins : The last update featured 3 digital currencies to help spice up the gameplay, now there are 3 MORE new coins for a total of 6 different options to change up the difficulty of earning or spending coins for your defense assets.

The Button Patch

This patch features a major change in the player interactions.

From now on you will have to CLICK the facility icon on the planet to activate it's panel instead of hovering the cursor over it

This change was brought on because the panels would pop up and conflict with the flow of shooting the Surface Cannon. It made the aiming at targets too close or on top of the planet difficult. Simply trying to get the cursor to the other side of the screen was more difficult because of the panel popping up. So now the flow of combat should not be interrupted unintentionally.

Another important change is a boost to the Sat-Turret's armor selection. The Armor of the Sat-Turret provides a chance to deflect hits and now the values are
Light : 7% > 13%
Medium : 13% > 21%
Heavy : 20% > 33%
Super Heavy : 33% > 41%

The Fall Update!

Greetings Planetary Defenders! Its your boy Natedog769 and I welcome you to the Planetary Defense Fall Update! Version 1.5! I am excited to introduce to you 2 new game modes as well as the new enemy type AND a new currency mechanic!


Under Attack!


2 new game modes called UFO Attack and Asteroid Attack have been added. These feature 20 minute sprints of orbital turret chaos against one of these enemy types. The last patch introduced light, medium, and heavy versions of the Orbiters and Roamer UFOs and here you will battle against them with 5 orbital positions (instead of the full 7). The original game mode is now called the Invasion and previously it was never ending, a see how far you can make it, but now there is definitive end after 15 3-minute waves.
2 new tabs have been added to the scoreboard for these games mode scores.


Frigates!


A new enemy ship has been dispatched! These Alien battleships come wielding several Sat-Turret destroying guns! These ships are heavily armored so fire power needs to be concentrated on its weak spots or shoot down the many onboard guns!



Digital Currency!


Oh no! Not more crypto talk... Don’t despair! This game mechanic is a play on digital currency, as a way to add a little tension to the earning and spending of the in-game coins. Previously there was just a basic earn and spend system but now with 3 new digital currencies, each will offer an additional challenge, each bearing a unique function that will make the coin lose value, become harder to acquire, or straight up burn your unspent surplus. Details on how the system works will be in the newly updated Help menu.
The in-game UI was also updated in the last patch but has been cleaned up and expanded to feature a new Digi-Coin panel. Hover over the coin value with the mouse and it will display the important values of the coin.

Additional changes


There have been a few changes and additions to certain systems
UFO attacks have become inaccurate. Now UFOs won’t have a guaranteed hit on certain targets especially at farther distances.
The Console has been updated to feature new bits of lore to help set the stage of the game and give fun context. The Console is updated to display the speaker of the message, whether it be an advisor or the in-game 'AI computer system'
The Console can also be toggled on and off with a new button at the bottom of the screen.

In the works


The next update will be in the winter called the Lunar Update to be available in time for the Lunar New Year! For this update I have planned one more new game mode that should really change up the gameplay in a couple ways.
I also will be working on revolutionizing the score system for more detailed statistics and make way for for in-game achievements!
I have ideas for a few more coins but I want to see how these first 3 will pan out.
I will also continue working on artwork for sprites and UI and visual effects and balances for stats as well.

Also in the works will be a difficulty system, and new scoreboards for those difficulties.

Day One Patch

Greetings! This is the first patch for the release of the game, namely some bug fixes and renaming and clarifications of some descriptions.
This is a work in progress and will try to regularly maintain the game for bugs and balance fixing but I will be adding more significant additions as time goes on
