Raft

VERSION 1.0: The Final Chapter - Out Now!

It is finally here. It is our most ambitious update ever. It is our BIGGEST update ever. There are new destinations, new enemies, more items, voice acting, new characters, trading and so much more. It is the culmination of more than five years of development and the grand finale to the Raft story line. It is The Final Chapter, and it is ready to be played.

Before we get into the details of this massive patch, we would like to thank you all for joining us on this journey. It has been amazing to see so many people play and appreciate Raft and without you we would have never made it here. With this update, we are happy to announce that we are leaving Early Access, as we consider Raft to no longer be in need of that title. We have looked forward to this day for many years and at this point we just cannot wait to see all the Let’s Plays, streams and to simply hear what you think of it! So let us not waste any more time and dive straight into it!

New destinations!

For this update we have three new destinations to find, explore and make your way through.

First up is Varuna Point, the sunken towers of the rich. It was once set to be the salvation for the elite, but the waves came quicker than expected and it has since been abandoned and forgotten by any and all… almost.

Next we have Temperance, a snow covered piece of land still above water. Home to the researchers at Selene, it was the last hope for humanity to reverse the rising of the oceans. As the reactor malfunctioned, most fled and left the island to fight for their survival elsewhere, but for the brave, there still might be a chance to restore the reactor.

As previously mentioned, there is a third destination. The destination where the strings are tied together and you will face the final challenge. However, we think it is best you discover this one on your own.

Story overhaul

As this is the final chapter, and everything is coming together, we felt it was time to take a look at the old story while implementing the new. We have rewritten quite a lot of it to make it follow a continuous story and to fit with the new destinations. Overall, we have also streamlined the story to make it read as well as possible, by removing certain parts and adjusting others, while also delivering the most engaging narrative that we can muster.

In addition to this, we have added voice acting for all the story notes in the game. Now, when you pick up a note, it will automatically be read back to you by the author of that note. You can also disable automatic playback and listen to them whenever you want from the notebook, if that is your preference.

We hope all these improvements will provide a more clear and engaging narrative experience, and we do recommend that you revisit old destinations and give the story another go to refresh your memory! For those who want the full experience, we do recommend starting a new save!

New enemies

Throughout these new destinations you will encounter new enemies. Some are tougher than others, but one thing is for sure, they are all out to put a stop to your adventures!

To begin with, we have the anglerfish. These little creatures are quicker than expected and will bite your toe right off if you are not careful!

Next in line is the scuttler. It is not terribly quick but in tight spaces they will surely gang up on you!

You have seen the bears, but now there are also polar bears! They are not too different from their brown cousins, except that they might be a bit harder to spot against the snow.

Hyenas are known to hunt in packs, and these are no different. Be careful as they are quite fast and will grab you by the leg when you least expect it!

Those are all the enemies we are willing to disclose here, but there is more to discover in the game! So watch out, and make sure to bring your armor!

New Rafters!

Rouhi and Maya could really use some more company! It is finally time to introduce some new survivors to your rafts. Throughout the world you will be able to meet and unlock four new characters in order to play as them. Make sure to go back to previous destinations, as not all of them are found on the new ones! Let us take a look at who they are!

There are also a whole bunch of new clothing options for each character! Let us take a look at some of the new outfits!

There are many more in the game, so you should be able to find something that suits your style!

Trading Posts

The Trading Posts is a whole new way to make the most of all the resources that you do not really feel the need to keep! Trading posts can be found on many of the large islands and offer a variety of items. Some will help with survival, some will help with fighting and some will simply make you or your raft prettier. Purchasing the items in the trading posts costs Trash Cubes and sometimes Trade Coins. Trash cubes are produced in the Recycler by converting your left over materials into cubes, while Trade coins are acquired by selling rare fish to the Trading posts.

Juicer and Buffs!

If you want to improve your kitchen, the new juicer will do the trick! Provide it with ingredients and electricity and it will give you a fresh smoothie. Also, both the cooking pot and the juicer can now provide food and smoothies that give you certain buffs! For these you will need special recipes that can be bought at the Trading Posts, and they can give you speed boosts, increased lung capacity, bonus health and more.

New Items!

This update brings a bunch of new items, machines and decorations!

Juicer, Electric Grill and Electric Smelter

Advanced Anchor, Advanced Biofuel Extractor, Recycler and Wind Turbine.

Titanium Arrow, Sword, Axe and Hook.

Canteen, Advanced Battery, Advanced Headlight and Electric Zipline Tool.

Apart from this, there are now also:

  • Advanced Crop plots in different sizes
  • Advanced Scarecrow
  • Big Backpack
  • Anchor Lever on Engine controls

For building, there is now a highly requested horizontal pillar available! Gone are the times when building a large second floor required a bunch of pillars blocking the view below.

Lastly, we have also added the Detail Plank! It is a simple plank that you can place freely and stretch and rotate to your liking! Have a look!

Vending Machines

Tangaroa Tokens have been changed to Vending Machine Tokens and can be used on more than just Tangaroa. Vending machines can now be found on two additional destinations, each with their own unique inventory!

We have left some things for you to discover for yourselves and we have probably forgotten some. Apart from all these new features and additions we have also done our best to fix as many bugs as possible and there are a bunch of optimizations behind the scenes that we believe will increase your framerate and enjoyment of the game!

Steam Community Assets

We have added trading cards, badges, profile backgrounds and emojis to use on your Steam profiles! Here are a couple examples!

Badges

Trading Cards

Emoticons

Backgrounds

More Community Main Menu Rafts

A while back we had another event over on our Discord where everyone had a chance to get their raft featured as a main menu raft in the game. We had a bunch of beautiful submissions and it was a tough choice, but in the end we were able to narrow it down to three winners. Congratulations to;

Potatie

Melisses

And Awoodsman

As always, we love to hear what you think about the update and we hope you have a great time playing it!

That is all for this time! Have a great summer and good luck out on the ocean!

Raft - The Final Chapter Trailer

Hello Rafters! We are happy to announce that The Final Chapter is releasing on June 20! It’s by far our biggest update yet! New destinations, New playable characters, new enemies, more story and many new exciting features.

We have a trailer ready for you right now, have a look!

Dev Blog #47

Hello, dear Rafters! It is a new year and it is time for a new DevBlog! We hope 2022 has treated you well so far, and that your holidays have been chill and full of joy! As things go, we have gone back to working from home here in Sweden, but our spirits are high and we are powering on as usual! So, let us get into what is happening with Raft!

Chapter 3

We will get straight into what you are all probably wondering; what is happening with Chapter 3? We have noticed a lot of you were expecting the next part of the story to drop before Christmas, and that is understandable as Chapter 1 and 2 were both released around October/November. We would have loved to be able to give you Chapter 3 at that time, but believe me when I say, it would not have been pretty. Chapter 3 is not quite ready, and that is mainly due to two factors.

Firstly, the Renovation update we released last summer did eat into development time from Chapter 3, as many of you have guessed. We have received quite differing opinions on whether prioritising the Renovation Update over Chapter 3 was a smart choice. Many loved the new building and furnishing options, but a lot of you also just craved more story. But the Renovation Update also included a lot of features, bug fixes and changes we had wanted to do for Chapter 3 anyways. So, it seemed to us that releasing all these changes, along with more decorative objects and features, was the best way forward, instead of waiting and bundling them together with Chapter 3, which we knew was quite a bit away still.

The second, and major, reason Chapter 3 has taken more time than the previous installments is simply that it will deliver a whole lot more than before. First and foremost, it will be bigger than before, and apart from the things you have come to expect from a chapter update, like new story islands, new small islands, new raft machines and building parts, we have some really cool things in the works that you have yet to see in Raft. We will not reveal all of that in this dev blog though.

New playable characters

First up on the list are new playable characters that you’ll be able to find and unlock out in the world. These will have a connection to the place where you find them and provide you some insight into their background. We are not ready to show the finished characters right now, but we will not leave you completely empty handed. So here is a teaser.

New destinations

If you follow us on social media you have probably seen some of the teasers we have posted there regarding one of the new destinations. In case you missed it, here you go!

But of course, that is not the only new destination for Chapter 3. We have got something a bit more… chilly for you. We posted the following images a while ago.

There has been some speculation as to where they belong, and we are glad to be able to reveal their snowy origins.

We generally do not want to spoil too much of what is to come in our updates, as we believe it is better to experience most of it in game. Therefore we will hold on to the final destination of Chapter 3 for a later time. Oh, yes, there is a third destination.

Story overhaul

With Chapter 3 in the works we decided to do a major refresh of the story. The essence remains the same, but we have rewritten almost all of the notes to make them easier to read and follow. Unnecessary characters and names have been removed to reduce confusion and we have made sure there is a more consistent and engaging story throughout all of the destinations. We have reduced the amount of text that does not add to the story, and we have added text that enriches it. We are even working on introducing playback for the notes, for those who prefer to just listen while they keep playing.

Trading outposts

You might find yourself with a lot of stuff in your storage that you do not really need anymore. Well, that is finally going to come to use! You will be able to process a variety of items, such as planks, scrap metal, plastic etc, into scrap cubes. These scrap cubes can then be used as currency at trading outposts which you will find at various locations around the world. The trading outposts will offer various items, including, but not limited to, special cooking and juicer ingredients, stunning hats and equipment.

With all of that being said, we have many more machines, buildables, quality of life fixes and much more in the pipeline, but we will get to that in a future devblog. For now, we wish you a great 2022 and good times on the sea!

HELP US HELP THE OCEAN!

Hi! We are glad to announce we are having a charity collaboration sale with WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation. Hotfix 13.01

Hello Rafters!

We have got some changes and bug fixes for you! One added feature is the option to replace an old building block for a new one in a different material without first chopping down the old one. This will make it easier to upgrade your raft to the new solid wood pieces without risking the destruction of blocks above.

CHANGELOG

  • Building blocks can now be replaced for a different material (wood, solid wood, thatch) using the building hammer.
  • Half window block now has a cost instead of being free to build.
  • Slanted solid wood ceilings adjusted to no longer clip through above floors.
  • Removing a table with a storage on it now returns the items in the storage as well.
  • Diagonal slanted ceilings can now be rotated in 90 degree increments instead of 180.

BUG FIXES

  • Storages dissapearing when removing something else.
  • Zipline cancel dragging had wrong text.
  • Half ladders had wrong rotation.
  • Picking up research table did not return item in research slot.
  • Being able to fly when entering chair from a ladder.

Update 13: The Renovation Update - Out Now!

Hello Rafters! Summer is here and we are happy to announce that The Renovation Update has just launched and is ready to play! With the previous chapter updates we have put a lot of focus on the story and adventure side of Raft, so we felt it was time to show some love for all the people who like to spend time building, painting and making their rafts look absolutely amazing! Over the years we have seen you build everything from pirate ships, yachts and oil tankers to skyscrapers, cathedrals and even large city areas. With this update, we hope to give you a lot more freedom in what you can create, and how much you can personalize your own rafts. This is a great time to hop on your Raft and get it nice and tidy in preparation for new future adventures!

For everyone wondering about Chapter 3, do not worry, the Renovation Update has not been our only focus since the release of Chapter 2. A lot of work has been done on the next part of the Raft story, and we’re excited to show you more of that soon. We cannot give you a time of release for Chapter 3 yet, but we can tell you that it is going to be even bigger and better than the previous ones, and we believe it is going to be worth the wait!

But now, let's get into all the new stuff for decorating your raft!

NEW BUILDING BLOCKS

This new set of fancy building blocks will surely make your Raft look more robust and luxurious, if that is what you are into! With their tight fit, finer wood and straight angles, these blocks will surely take your Raft to the next level! They will be available from your hammer menu as soon as you jump into the game, but at a slightly higher cost.

There are also some new shapes to help fill in those weird angles and turns!

NEW DECORATIONS

With this update comes over 65 new decorations to craft for your Raft! There’s sofas, bathtubs, beds, candelabras, paintings, cupboards, trash cans and a whole lot more! Many of them will provide different variations of the model depending on whether you place them on walls, ceilings or floors!

These decorations will be unlocked via packages that can be found via the metal detector, in floating barrels and in crates on islands. Will you find them all?

NEW PAINTING OPTIONS

We have overhauled the paint menu to allow for much more interesting painting options! First of all, you will now be able to paint the different sides of walls, ceilings, and floors separately.

Patterns

Walls, ceilings and floors can also be painted with eight different patterns for additional cozyness!

Two-Part Painting

In order for you to match your building blocks, we have added the option to paint almost every decorative and functional placeable object on your raft with two different colors! This is a toggle option.

QUALITY OF LIFE FIXES

Alongside all of these new options, we have added some features to help you build and paint effectively!

First out is swatches. In the paint menu, you will be able to easily pick recently used colors, colors combos and even patterns!

Aim-n-Select!

With both the paintbrush and the hammer, you are now able to simply aim at an object, click the middle mouse button, and that building block or color palette is instantly selected. This is tremendously helpful when building complex rafts.

Axe Visualization

Have you ever tried chopping down a floor or ceiling, and instead managed to break a supporting pillar sneakily hiding behind? Well, no more! When the axe is equipped, you now get a clear visualization of which block you are actually about to chop down. Very nice!

Paint Preview

Since there’s a lot of new painting options, and you do not want to waste your paint, you will now get a preview of what you will be painting as you aim at an object with the paint brush selected.

WILDLIFE

To make the world of Raft more immersive and alive, we have added more wildlife to the game! Once in a while you will be visited by whales, turtles, dolphins, sting rays, jellyfish and bird packs! They are all friendly and just want to hang around.

ENGINE CONTROLS

This was planned to come with Chapter 3, but we have heard your requests and here it is! With the Engine Controls, you no longer need to run around managing the Engines separately! From this piece of marvelous engineering you can control the on/off state and direction of all your Engines from the comfort of wherever you want! Maybe the loo?

REVAMPED ASSETS

A lot of the old models have had a refresh in their graphical appearance. All the older building blocks like walls, stairs etc have gotten softer edges to catch the light better and cleaned up wood patterns, and most of the placeable objects have had their textures adjusted to match the style of the rest of the game!

Good luck and have fun Rafters!

DevBlog#45

Hello Rafters!

February is coming to an end, sun is starting to show its face again, and it is time for this month’s devblog. February has been full of snow and slippery walks to the grocery store, yet this does not stop us from working on the next chapter! We have our blankets, tea, and the most crucial motivation tools of them all, pet pictures and your support!

(Here is one of our artists, Felicia, and her cat Samus. She also has another cat named Zelda!)

We have made a good deal of progress this month regarding the new destinations and the new features. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to show many sneak peeks of them just yet. What we can show, however, is the attack animations of the new enemy! Oh, and let’s not forget they officially have a name now:

SCUTTLERS

Last week, we asked for your help naming the new enemy and got 4500+ suggestions combined on all our social media. Going through all of them, we picked one of the most suggested names; Scuttlers!
Some other ideas we liked were; Crawlers, Pinchers, and Grublings.

Thanks to all Rafters who shared their ideas with us and helped us with this process.
Here are a few of many “Scuttler” suggestions:

Now, let us show you some more Scuttlers action. One of our artists and also our CEO, André, has been working on the attack animations for these creatures, among other concepts and features. Have a look!

JUICER

Do you remember the juicer concept we shared in DevBlog43 ?
Now we have a finished 3D model of it. Our artists Petter and William have collaborated, bringing this machine to life. William was the name behind the concept art, and Petter worked with the 3D modelling and got the Juicer to its finished form.

Thanks for another month full of Raft!

Before we end our blog for this month, we just want to mention that there is no estimated arrival date for the next chapter yet. We know you are wondering about it, but it is too early for us to say. Don’t worry! We will continue to update you on what we are working on and keep you in the loop.

Thanks for another month of Raft and talk to you again next month.
Have a great weekend, Rafters!
