An August Update: Heading to gamescom, Discord, Contest Winner, and more!
Dear Community, looking at the calendar, we realized that a new status update about what's happening behind-the-scenes is long overdue. After all, you've been eagerly waiting for some news for a while, right?
Today we'll provide some insights into a few structural and organizational topics - and announce the winner of our little community contest!
We're heading to gamescom!
We love hearing what you think about the game, no matter if it's good or bad. Without your feedback and critisism, the game would never be shaped the way we all want it to. However, reading your comments online is nice - but very often, it is also helpful to hear your opinion in person.
That's why we're happy to share that Railroads Online will be present at this year's gamescom and it will be playable with a little demo. You can find us at the astragon booth in Hall 6, B-060. If you're in Cologne, feel free to come by and share your feedback - you can even receive a little goodie!
gamescom runs from August 23 to August 27 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. We plan to visit some other events in the future, so stay tuned for more details!
More support on Steam!
The team is growing! You've already seen Kitsune, CaptainChooChoo (both being part of the development team) and Sandy being active in the Steam Forums and they will continue to do so in the future. Our new moderators will ensure better moderation, more answered questions, improved community interaction, and a higher number of reported bugs being tracked!
Congrats to the winner of our community contest!
Hundreds of players joined our community contest, which we started a few months ago, and we had a lot of fun going through every single save game. It took some time, but we finally have a winner: Congrats, CaptainBCXD!
CaptainBCXD created a world with one of the most creative way we've ever seen the splines being used. Not everything is still possible in the current version of the game, but as we're celebrating the entire history of Railroads Online, we were still amazed by their work in the past.
The bridges in particular are amazing, with the use of rails almost appearing like we're looking at a cable-stayed bridge. The ones made out of concrete are also beautiful, seemlessly blending in with the also elegantly created depots and railyards.
During gamescom, we'll publish a special trailer highlighting some of our favorite community creations!
Welcome back, Discord
Yes, it's happening.
We've restructured and overhauled the official Discord server for Railroads Online where some of you are already a member. At the moment, we're working on the last steps until we re-open the server where you can chat with other players about the game.
The re-opening will be announced in a separate post.
A new chapter
A new partner is joining the development and we're currently working on the last contractual details to finalize everything. We know you really want to know more but as soon as we can, we pinky promise to share all the news with you. It... took some time :')
And that's all for today! Have a good time in the valley and never stop shaping the world of Railroads Online ❤
The Weather & Sky Update is now available on the stable branch!
Dear Community,
we can't believe how much you've been enjoying the beta of The Weather & Sky Update thus far – despite the fact that it was just a beta! After spending more than two months with going through all your feedback, implementing suggestions, fixing bugs, and improving a lot of other aspects, we can proudly announce that the full Weather & Sky Update is now available to everyone on the stable branch!
What's inside?
If you haven't had the time to dive into the beta, no worries – here's a quick little overview of what's inside The Weather & Sky Update!
Upgrade to Unreal Engine 5: This way, we have a new baseline to start working from when it comes to polishing, bugfixing and optimization. We are now able to use a bunch of features included in Unreal Engine 5 and take advantage of them to ship features which a lot of you frequently requested!
Improved Save Game System: You can now properly name your save games... and save them at any time as well, also thanks to a new optional autosave system.
Day & Night Cycle: A fully automated, customizable cycle is now part of the game. You can even adjust the timings and select the time of day yourself!
Weather: Sunny, cloudy, overcast, foggy, light rain, rain, thunderstorms, light snow, snow, blizzard, light sand, sand storm... yeah, weather is here as well now. You can choose between all of these options and set them the way you want while also being able to set the weather transition time.
New cars: Please say hello to the Gregg Sugar Cane Cane Flat, Gregg Sugar Cane Logging Flat, Gregg Sugar Cane Stake Flat, Gregg Sugar Cane Bulkhead Flat, Gregg Sugar Cane Lowside Gondola, Gregg Sugar Cane Medium Gondola, Gregg Sugar Cane Highside Gondola, EWA Plantation Box Car and the Waualua Agricultural Tank Car.
New tools to play with: We're also introducing an oil lamp to carry with you, a new headlight variant for the Glenbrook engine, new paint variants for the Glenbrook engine and a new Steel Truss bridge segment.
Overall, today's build is similar to the latest update we shipped on the beta branch. However, a few additional changes have been made in the meantime:
Fixed bug where industry names were not present on client side
Fixed bug where engines would suddenly stop and start when regulator was at 19% or lower (special thanks to GWR6029)
Fixed plantation medium gondola freight capacity: 15 barrels
Adjusted system requirements
As you may have already guessed, the switch to Unreal Engine 5 will inevitably lead to higher system requirements. Even though we continue to improve overall stability and performance, we simply can not guarantee that everyone will be able to enjoy the benefits of Unreal Engine 5 with their existing hardware.
We still believe it is the right approach to ensure a smoother and more stable development process and becoming more future-proof in general.
After running a few tests, these are now our adjusted system requirements which will also be put on the store page:
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 with 8 GB VRAM or more
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 6000 MB available space
Legacy builds
A lot of you asked if we could at least keep a legacy build of UE4 alive that will continue to exist even after UE5 has eventually replaced UE4 on the stable branch – and yes, we think that your idea is great and we will indeed provide one as a dedicated selectable branch.
However, keep in mind that this legacy branch will not be updated in the future as working on two different engines at once is simply not feasible. To switch to the legacy branch, please follow these steps:
Select Railroads Online in your Steam library
Press right-click
Select Properties
Select Beta
Beta Participation: Select 'legacybranch' in the dropdown menu
And that's it for today! Have a good time in the valley and never stop shaping the world of Railroads Online ❤
The annual Steam Summer Sale is here and of course we also prepared some exclusive offers for you! If the sun isn't hot enough for you, make sure to grab yourself a blazing hot discount of 20% on Railroads Online! 🔥
The Steam Summer Sale ends on July 13 at 7:00 PM CEST.
today we're shipping an update to the beta branch with the version number 0.5.8. With the update, we've fixed some performance and crash issues, improved control behavior and resolved problems with brakes. In addition, old splines and old switch types will now be converted to their newer versions. Say bye-bye to the past.
A little surprise is also included in today's beta update: New rolling stock! We're introducing some fresh cars manufactured by the Gregg Company, a historic manufacturer of plantation equipment in the Americas. Their more compact size is perfect for combining them with the smaller starter engines like the Porter. Oh and some of them... might have a new secret use soon? Well, let's see.
For more details about today's update, check out the patch notes below.
As always, for feedback, please head over to our dedicated beta forum where you can post bugs and give us suggestions :)
Thank you and have a great weekend!

Railroads Online – Beta Update 0.5.7
Dear Community,
today we're shipping an update to the beta branch with the version number 0.5.7. With the update, we've fixed some misbehavior of controls, resolved a bunch of issues with locomotives, improved turntable behavior, and enabled some older hardware to play the game on Unreal Engine 5.
As the fixes have been quite extensive and complex, two things you should all have in mind will happen when starting the game with the new version number:
Please reset your controls: In the last versions, walking forward by pressing W was not possible by default anymore, requiring you to set the key again to the respective function. This was sadly not a trivial fix which means that after installing the update, you have to reset your controls via the option menu to have it all working fully fine.
Vehicles spawning in the ground: We had to move the actual pivot point of some cars to fix some other critical problems. Due to that, your locomotives will spawn in the ground when initially launching the game. After re-railing them, their new location should be correctly saved and the next time you launch the game, they should spawn correctly. Sorry for the inconvenience.
In addition, we're shipping some smaller new content the team has been working on for a while. This includes a new headlight variant for the Glenbrook engine, a new steel truss bridge segment and a few sound effects.
In the coming weeks, we'll release a bigger blog post listing our learnings from the update, share a few details on what's happening behind-the-scenes, what we're currently working on, and more! Please look forward to it :)
For more details about today's update, check out the patch notes below.
As always, for feedback, please head over to our dedicated beta forum where you can post bugs and give us suggestions :)
Thank you and have a great weekend!

The Weather & Sky Update: Now available in beta!
Dear Community,
today we're happy to reveal The Weather & Sky Update, upgrading the game to Unreal Engine 5 and introducing a bunch of highly requested features – including an improved save game mechanism, a full day & night cycle and a weather system.
The update is now available in open beta for testing!
Let's become future-proof
With this update, we're upgrading the entirety of Railroads Online from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 – version 5.0.3, to be exact.
At first glance, you will not notice too many differences. Our switch to UE5 mainly serves as preparation for the further development of the game and to make the game more future-proof in general. This way, we have a new baseline to start working from when it comes to polishing, bugfixing and optimization.
In addition, we are now able to use a bunch of features included in Unreal Engine 5 and take advantage of them to ship features which a lot of you frequently requested! Some of them are even part of this update :)
Improved Save Game System
When evaluating your feedback, it became clear that we really needed to improve the entire system around how save games are being handled. Currently, you have to manually save your game and the automatically generated name can be slightly confusing as you often have to guess which save game does what.
Starting with The Weather & Sky Update, all your save games can be properly named and saved at any time. In addition, newly created save games contain a thumbnail screenshot of your game world from a player's perspective. Older save games will instead display a generic RRO icon as a thumbnail.
When you start a game, you can select any save game from a drop-down menu that is showing both the name and the thumbnail of said save game.
Another thing we're introducing is an autosave functionality which can be customized in the settings. You can set the intervals at which the game is being autosaved to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes. However, you can also turn off autosave completely.
Day & Night Cycle
Thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5, a fully animated day & night cycle is now part of Railroads Online! This cycle contains a sunrise, a sunset, stars, and a beautiful moon. If you're a night owl (like the person writing these lines), you might prefer working at night – and vice versa if you're an early bird who prefers daylight (which the person writing these lines respects).
The length of both day & night can be set individually in minutes, which means that you can choose how long you want your 24 in-game hours to last (the person writing these lines wants the night to stay forever tho).
No worries: You are not forced to follow the cycle, instead you can set the current time of day whenever you want (the person writing these lines will definitely let the night stay forever).
Welcome to Weather
Humidity is rising, barometer's getting low, according to all sources, the valley's the place to go. Okay, these are not quite the correct lyrics, but the message is correct: We're also adding a weather system today!
Wanna have it sunny? Or rather cloudy, overcast, foggy? Do you want to have light rain, rain, thunderstorms, light snow, snow, or even a blizzard? Or do you prefer light sand or a sand storm?
You can now choose between all of these options and set them the way you want to provide the right mood. You can also set the weather transition time when a new weather setting has been chosen!
What else?
The night is dark and full of terrors – which requires at least a shimmer of light to prevail the peace. Your character now carries an oil lamp with them which lights up the surrounding area. We don't want you to get lost in the woods, you know?
The headlights of your locomotives now also cast a cone of light, illuminating the track and the surrounding area. Static oil lamps are also present in the cabs and cabooses, lighting up all interiors.
Community Poll
As we are working on an updated development roadmap, we want to hear your opinion and get a feel for what you think is the most important to you as the players. Which topics should we tackle with higher priority? Which features should we visit rather sooner than later?
Today, we're also updating the official keyart for Railroads Online. Check it out in its full glory:
We also have a new trailer ready, showcasing all locomotives to new players! Time to learn more, heh? :)
Some final words about the update
We hope that you like the things we're adding with this update and we can't wait for the feedback you'll provide during the duration of the open beta. The update will stay in beta for a few weeks so that we can fix and improve things until we can ship it from the beta branch to the public branch :)
For feedback and bug reports, please head over to our dedicated Steam Beta Forum where we collect all issues.
With this update, we're also switching to actual version numbers. The Weather & Sky Update, for example, is now version 0.5.3. Previously, we named the version after the date the update got released which wasn't perfect.
Heads-up: Before you start playing, we highly recommend to make sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date as older drivers can cause issues with Unreal Engine 5, including immediate crashes when launching the game.

Steam Spring Sale: Railroads Online is now 10% off!
Flowers are blooming, trees grow blossoms, the sun comes out: Welcome to this year's Steam Spring Sale, now running until March 23 at 6PM CET! 🌸
it's finally here: Welcome to The Coal & Power Update, now available for download!
We are moving ahead at full steam (ha!), introducing brand-new mechanics, new locomotives, new facility buildings, new freight cars... plus bug fixes and improvements.
Locomotives love their coal!
As mentioned previously, we are introducing a bunch of brand-new locomotives which are fully powered by coal. Note: Existing engines will continue to be powered by the mighty magic of wood.
During our brainstorming sessions, we came up with a lot of engines that could make their way into the game. Of course, your feedback played a valuable part in that process, ultimately leading to the selection of fan favorites.
With The Coal & Power Update, the following locomotives will join Railroads Online:
Cooke 2-6-0
ET&WNC 280
Mason Bogie Tenmile
Ruby Basin 2-8-0T
They will not come alone, however: New freight cars are also making their way into the game. Say hello to the Dump car, the Stock car, the Skeleton car, and the Coffin tank car!
Coal & Power
The new locomotives – we just want to repeat ourselves here – will all be powered by coal... hence leading to the name of this update. Must be a total surprise, right? Right? Right...? Right.
We explained the new mechanics with the last blogpost but here's a reminder how things work: We're adding a new facility building, the coaling tower, that is essential for the workflow. As is the case with other facility buildings, you can place the coaling towers wherever they suit your needs.
What does a coaling tower need? You won't believe it: Coal! The coaling towers are empty once you place them, meaning that you have to create a supply line from the coal mines to the coaling towers to fill them up by using the coal hoppers. Use the attached chute to put some fresh coal into the tender of your engines and shovel them right into the firebox!
If you are burning through too much firewood, good news: Using coal is much more efficient.
Other new buildings
That's not all, though: You'll receive a new engine shed. The Kanaskat water tower. The 1870s water tower. AND EVEN A NEW 3-WAY STUB SWITCH! Put your hands up in the air to celebrate 🙌
Steam Spring Sale 2023!
To hype up the new update, we will put Railroads Online on sale from March 10 to March 23.
FYI: The sale will start today at 7 PM CEST :)
From March 10 to 16, so a few days before the actual Spring Sale starts, you can save 20% when purchasing the game – and there has never been a better time to do so. With the start of the Steam Spring Sale which runs until March 23, the discount will be reduced to 10%. The early bird catches the worm!
