Rats in a Cage

What's next?

Hey, fellow caffeine-addicted office rats,

Thanks to your reports and feedback, we finally have a stable mind and version on both PC and MAC. Now we're trying to figure out what should be our next focus. We still need to bring Rats in a Cage to a wider audience. Do you have colleagues at work or friends who would play the game but are still missing that *something*?

We'd love to hear your opinion to help us decide!

Community suggestions so far:

  • Kids-friendly censored version
  • Steam Deck version
  • New language localization
  • Mobile version
  • Downloadable/Playable OST

Please let us know your thoughts!

Bug fixes

We've started 2025 with a bug-fixing patch.

Once again, there were a lot of tiny issues and tweaks along with some major fixes:

  • Game Over screen is properly removed in final Promotion
  • You can no longer end in Infinite loop after being stabbed
  • BONUS doors are now properly open/closed after load/entering
  • You should no longer partially lose progress after switching from DEMO to a release version
  • After-load wrong music bug has been fixed

Many thanks to

for reporting these issues!

MAC version and Rats in a Cage found a way to each other!

Good news!

After some violent code-wrestling, good old-fashioned googling, trial & error testing, and pendulating between despair and hope, we’ve finally fixed the MAC version. I know! This is so exciting reading for all the PC users!

Bad news!

Unfortunately, Steam does not allow us to make two separate Mac versions. We had to choose between old Intel-based Macs and new arm-based Macs. We chose the future and went for arm-based (sometimes better known by their rapper name: “silicon” M1, M2 or M3) Macs.

Neutral news!

Another bunch of bugs were fixed with the newest update. Big thanks to everyone who reported them!

PS: It’s the (smashing) pumpkin(s) spice latte season again. Rats in a Cage does not judge your coffee choice - only your character.

Who let the Rats out? We did!

Weather report:

A storm of excitement is expected with a possibility of brain melting later today. The fun index is high so make sure you have some free time. Don't expect any easy breeze. A warning has been issued for a possible coffee flood in your stomach. Why? Beacuse Rats in a Cage was released today!

Grab it and play it sooner RAT-her than later.

Disclaimer:
All characters and events in Rats in a Cage are fictional. Any resemblance to your annoying coworkers, horrible bosses, and toxic employers is purely coincidental.

PS: Thank you for your awesomeness, brilliant ideas, feedback, and enthusiasm! You're the absolute best!

Brace yourselves, RELEASE is coming

Make sure you have some coffee beans at home, because we're ready for release on September 20th.
Channel your inner rat, refresh your corporate bullshit phrases, and stretch your brain!

WE ARE READY!

All that's left is the hard part - getting the game to fellow puzzle lovers. If you like the game, please tell about it to your friends and family.

Rats in a Cage probably isn't the "love at first sight" game. But the second sight could make it. Its beauty lies within. It’s one of those games you need to play to fall in love with it. If you or your friends haven't decided yet, you can always try our DEMO for free!

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - April 2024

RELEASE DATE

My brother, my wife and I are again intensively working on delivering the game to you later this year. We’re on track so far! Fingers crossed!

CHANGES & FIXES

We’ve been listening to your feedback and decided to make some desired changes to the game. Here’s what we’ve changed and fixed:

  • “Game Over” now automatically loads the latest save to save you time.
  • We added a “Minimum text” toggle in Options to reduce text pollution on the screen. It hides all flavor unsolicited and unimportant texts during level gameplay so you can fully focus on cracking the level without distractions. We leave it for you to decide.
  • We fixed a bug where fullscreen wasn’t working for some users
  • We fixed a bug that allowed you to lure a coworker through a closed door.
  • We fixed a bug that sometimes allowed you to quickly run through a door even when you left the pressure button that operated it.
  • We also made massive graphics updates including characters, level graphics, and foreground. We also changed the resolution from 1008x816 to 1488x816 so we could use that extra space for a nice background behind the monitor with some visual jokes in it as well.

NEW EPIC FEATURE

When I saw the latest playthrough videos where people struggled to beat some levels, I had an idea for a feature that we all need in puzzle games. The not-so-helpful “HELP” button. It won’t help you solve the level, but it will surely help your mental health. Press CTRL to release a desperate rat scream!

It’s a work-in-progress including the graphics, but you can check it here:

Once again, thank you for your patience and support!

PS: Please wishlist our game and tell your friends about us. It’s still time. Better latte than never!

Gameplay Broadcast & Chat with developers

There's nothing more exciting than watching someone play a puzzle game. There's lots of thinking, idle standing, and also thinking while idle standing and...did I say thinking already?

We'll be streaming with our friend playing Rats in a Cage: Demo for the first time.

Join us! Chat with us! Come to see him stumble and fall, then rise as a phoenix from the ashes to his "AHA!" moment.

SATURDAY 18th November, 5PM - 6PM (CET) which is 11AM - 12AM (ET).

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - October 2023

We sincerely apologize for the delay in delivering our game. We could come up with some corporate bullshit about why it’s taking so long, but the truth is that we’re basically a two-brothers developer team. And my brother was occupied with preparing and shooting his first feature film for most of this year.

(You will be able to see it in cinemas in 2025, but probably only in Czechia. Unless some streaming service will be interested in it as well. Fingers crossed!)

However, I wasn’t sitting idle. I made progress with dialogues, promotion scenes, joke intermezzos, plant jokes, out-of-the-game jokes, coding, and bug fixing. A lot of quality-of-life changes have been made as well. Including the ones from your feedback. I’m preparing a new version of DEMO so you can try it yourself as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and support! ːsteamthumbsupː

PS: Coffee with your soulless joy-sucking coworkers reduces your lifespan by an unknown, yet-to-be-discovered amount of time.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - April 2023

Overnight work, coffee doping, and daydreaming have finally paid off. Two floors have been finalized, the third is in the testing phase (almost there) and the fourth is being designed.

WARNING! Have a cup of coffee before reading any further! Or two. We're not judging.

FEATURES REVEAL

With the work progress, it became clear what features will be on those floors.

Floor1

  • Coffee lures coworkers...and we understand why.
  • Those doors of opportunity won't open themselves. They block the way but can be opened/closed with the right switch.
  • Annoying emails blocks the way at the receiving end...but as you know, they can be deferred indefinitely.
  • Everyone loves juicy office gossip. Similarly, just like a coffee lures coworkers, but can be placed anywhere anytime. Which might not be a good thing.

Floor2

  • From time to time we all need to actually do the work. Steal the work from your coworkers and present it to your boss as your own.
  • We all know that some deadlines are less deadly than others. You can push this one. Nobody cares. They might block your way, but you can push the deadline to block someone else.
  • Right person at the right place and the right time can open the doors for you as long as you, your coworker, or the deadline stands there, the doors will be open.

Floor3

  • Someone has to go. Make sure it's not you who's being laid off. Any unlucky soul who encounters it first will be fired!
  • With all the layoffs, the company will now have the budget to expand the office. Break walls to change level layout. For better or worse.

Floor4

  • Good old fashioned stab in the back. We've all been there. Stab your coworker in the back to remove coworker from the level completely.

Please tell your friends about us! Especially to those corporate zombie friends who are always late because the last meeting took longer than expected.

Thank you all for being with us!
