Alpha Roadmap: User Interface

Rend’s fourth Alpha roadmap feature is on the game's user interface which has been entirely redesigned over the course of Rend's Alpha. What started as monochromatic windows with inconsistent proportions has evolved into a cohesive layout that mirrors the game's bold color palette, displaying critical information in an easy-to-digest format incorporating the best practices from RPGs, MMOs, and the survival genre. Here's a set of samples showcasing the polished interface: the radial menu, character inventory, research tab, crafting table, and refinery window.

Beasts of Rend: Roc

Their squawk is unmistakable, a piercing cry across the plateau to scare off potential threats or orchestrate a flock’s attack. Rocs are the pack hunters of the Highlands, roaming the foothills in groups and led by a matriarch, larger both in size and attitude. Often growing taller than most men and armed with razor-sharp talons and pointed, muscular beaks, these birds are no easy prey. Though roc wings are too underdeveloped to be capable of sustained flight, they do allow the birds to hover short distances with the help of a well-timed pounce from their powerful legs.

Biomes of Rend: Highlands

The thick trees of the Stagswood give way to this sparse plateau composed of stony fields and sloping foothills. Bitterly cold headwinds have shaped the monolithic sagastone pillars that dot the landscape, weeping eternally into mystical pools. Despite its striking vistas, the Highlands is a rugged domain fraught with peril. Even the bravest warriors know not to linger when the eventide halos glow cerulean and darkness falls upon the stunted ironfirs as this is when the wildcats begin their nocturnal hunt.

Beasts of Rend: Glutt

Legends tell of a monstrous toad-like creature that dwells deep in the heart of Myrkfen. Glutts, so named for the guttural sound of their deafening croak, are rumored to tower over fortress walls and make the ground quake just by leaping. Their springy, venomous tongues can immobilize creatures with gelatinous mucus and their gaping maws are purportedly enormous enough to gobble men off their feet. While it’s natural to be skeptical given these fantastical accounts, what is true beyond doubt is that a self-proclaimed survivor of a recent glutt encounter left with three companions yet he was the only one to return.

Alpha Roadmap: Taming System

Rend’s third Alpha roadmap feature is on the taming system which allows players to capture and train (nearly) all of the creatures in Rend. Your once-feral, now-friendly companion will loyally battle alongside you as well as harvest resources, haul loot, siege bases, and of course serve as your trusty mount. Now when you encounter a new ferocious beast, your first thought should be how might it help you prove to the gods that your faction is most worthy of entering Valhalla.

Here’s an overview of Rend's taming system’s features!

Biomes of Rend: Myrkfen

Whatever you do, don’t drink the water. The fetid swamp is a miasma of vexation that can ensnare and wither away even the hardiest adventurers. Rotting vegetation fills the air with a permeating ochre haze, making it easy to stumble into a thornwood patch. Murky bogs dominated by infectious plants aren’t the only reason this marshland is hostile to life: ferocious allidons lurk in its muddy shallows and wasprey swarms have been known to cripple and devour weakened prey.

Developer Letter: Rend Alpha Update

Time sure does fly when we’re all having fun! Feels like just yesterday we were kicking off Alpha, relaunching the Rend website, and opening the official Rend forums. Since that time, we’ve published our Alpha roadmap, kicked off multiple article series, and attended E3 2018 to meet with top press and content creators. But most importantly is what’s coming up next for Rend: our biggest game update yet along with our largest test invite waves to date!

THIS IS WHY WE TEST!

Through Alpha’s first six patches, we’ve fixed haywire turrets that attacked their creators, tamed a torch that made those who wielded it invisible, and quieted a stacking warcry buff that permanently increased player run speed. Oh, and grunters don’t fall up into the sky any more. The first two Alpha roadmap features have also been added: the Reckoning update has just been deployed and player insights have already guided us in adjusting Control Points to make them into more frequent skirmishes while keeping the capture rewards compelling. It’s through the gameplay experiences and diligent issue reporting by our testers that we’ve knocked out more than 100 new bugs in a very short timeframe: our sincere thanks to all of our intrepid Alpha warriors!

Player feedback is also to thank for the game’s next major change: pack up your placeables because we’re moving the faction base!

Beasts of Rend: Stag

Stately and imposing, stags are the enigmatic sentinels of the Stagswood and beyond. Standing the full height of a man at the shoulder, these creatures grow branching, arboreal antlers that can reach as tall as the tree canopy. Warrior-scholars have long theorized about the nature of the leaves and flowers that sprout from these massive horns. Each species of stag plays host to local flora in a symbiotic relationship that appears to make other wildlife keep their distance out of respect. Fittingly, these majestic beasts are not to be trifled with as one rake across the flank from their flowery heads has ended the story of many a would-be hero.

Biomes of Rend: Stagswood

The dense treeline bordering Hearthhome is more than just a physical boundary: these mighty roughwoods act as a gateway to the wilderness. Obscuring the sun, wide canopies blanket the forest floor in shadow, making skogurfrut bushes and hardwood saplings compete for each ray of light. Tangled branches muffle the footsteps of hungry wargs stalking those who have lost their way among the trees. Though the Stagswood is a necessary first step on the path towards ascension, take care that it isn’t your last.

Alpha Roadmap: The Reckoning

Rend’s second Alpha roadmap feature is on the Reckoning: this is the huge war you’ve been wanting to experience in the survival genre. This global server event makes faction bases vulnerable to PvE and PvP attack for a short, set period of time. Factions that plan ahead will fare the best during a Reckoning, deciding on a strategy for how they intend to fight off the PvE waves, defend their damaged base from a PvP invasion, and whether to use the opportunity to assault an opponent’s base. We’ll be demonstrating the Reckoning at E3 2018 before deploying it to Alpha.

Here’s an overview of how a Reckoning event plays out!
