New level "The Underground" is now live!

Build 20190806 is now live, and it includes the new metro level in New Shinjuku. As usual, this update is free, and as a bonus, it also includes 44 new clothing items for Lux. Enjoy. ːsteamhappyː

New features

  • Added a new level: "The Underground". In here, you can find collectibles that you'll need to complete the Hoarder achievement. The entrance to the level is at the subway stairs next to the breakdancer in New Shinjuku. Tip for this level: if it looks like Lux can't proceed further due to an obstacle or barrier...remember she can jump now. :lunar2019coolpig:
  • Added 44 new clothing items for Lux.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed rendering of Lux's Christmas Hat 3 (her blonde hair was rendering as pink).

Build 20190726 is live

Bug fixes

  • Implemented a fix for the save file issues that some players in Europe are experiencing. The issue appears to be caused by a recent bug introduced into the Unity engine: Unity now uses the localisation settings when reading floats, so in Europe - where commas are used in floating point numbers - Unity changes "5.3" to "5,3", which the read() method doesn't understand. Workaround implemented.
  • Fixed various bugs in the user interface when using gamepads.
  • Updated loading screens and postcards to match the new artwork in several maps (e.g. New Shinjuku).
  • [Mogwai] Fixed a navigation issue where the Yaogaui could get stuck on fences and bridges while chasing Lux.

Performance tuning

  • [Dogan Outpost] Increased the frame rate by reducing the number of shadows being cast and moving more objects to the GPU. Note: I've just noticed that this has introduced some weird artifacts when rendering Lux's hair in this scene. I'll fix that in the next build.

Other Stuff

  • Changed Lux's appearance in the dialogue portraits. It's less hi-res, but I think she looks better.

Cloud saves have been disabled

Hey all,

I've been seeing some issues related to save files over the last few months, and they seem to be related to Steam's Cloud Save feature. It's only affecting a few users, but when it happens, it breaks the game until you delete your cloud save file and/or your game's save data.

The problem's more likely to be in my code than in Steam's, but I've disabled Steam Cloud Save while I investigate. This shouldn't affect your gameplay at all: the game will still save and load your progress. It just means that if you switch to a different computer, it won't carry your progress across to it.

I'll keep you updated - thanks for your patience. :)

Build 20190721 is live

I'm back from vacation! This build mostly just addresses some urgent game-breaking issues. I'll be working on lower-priority issues throughout the coming week.

Improvements

  • [Oridian Cave System] Reduced the number of Redaction Commission enemies to two. This makes that battle easier, reducing the chance of Lux dying and having to restart the scene.

Performance tuning

  • Enabled Graphics Jobs in the Unity engine (the core tech the game is built on). This should allow graphics to be processed multithreaded - and therefore much faster - but it's an experimental feature, so please let me know if you experience weird graphics bugs or artefacts.
  • [Dogan Outpost] Increased the frame rate in Dogan Outpost by reducing the shadow draw distance and texture sizes.

Bug fixes

  • Some players were getting a black screen due to their GPUs not supporting a new shader in the latest Unity release. Fixed.
  • Fixed a bug where Lux could equip weapons in some scenes before they were unlocked (and then not unequip them).
  • [Dogan Outpost] Fixed a bug where Lux could push the car by just running into it. This triggered the fire, messing up the event sequence and stopping the story from progressing.
  • [Oridian Cave System] Fixed a bug where the story would not progress if Lux died while fighting the Redaction Commission agents.
  • [Rosa Park] Fixed a bug where Lux would enter her jump pose when walking on the verandah in the large house near Waters.
  • [New Shinjuku] Fixed a bug where Lux would sometimes stand on a backwards angle after destroying the laptop evidence.

Other Stuff

<*>Just a heads up: watch your social media, I'll be releasing a new code this week which will unlock up to 12 more items for Lux. :)

Build 20190623 is live

Performance tuning

  • Refactored memory management when loading scenes. While working on the PS4 port, I ran into some memory issues during scene loading, so I had to redesign the way it's coded. It's much faster and cleaner now.

Bug fixes

  • Finally fixed a "day 1" bug where NPCs would lean forwards or backwards if Lux got very close to them. It literally took a single line of code to fix it! Just part of the ongoing learning process: I'd misunderstood how something works in Unity.
  • [Hart Residence] Fixed a bug where Lux could be teleported to the Redaction Commission by pressing the action key from the room directly under the laptop.
  • [Hart Residence] Fixed a bug where Lux would be frozen in the jump pose if she jumped onto some objects (e.g. the kitchen table). We should have cleared all instances of this bug from the game now. If you see it happen anywhere, please do let me know.

Other Stuff

<*>I'll be on vacation from June 28 to July 18. I'll be travelling with my laptop, but I won't have access to my dev machine remotely, so there won't be a new build until late July. If you find any urgent problems over the next few days, please email me or run Send Diagnostics before Tuesday evening (June 25) to give me time to upload a fix.
<*>The first unlock code has now expired. Not to worry - I'll be releasing a new code on social media very soon which will unlock up to 12 more items. :)
<*>Most of the big bugs these days are related to issues with the way the game saves data (even things that seem completely unrelated, like not being able to open a crate). I'm thinking of rewriting the save data code, but as it's a big change, I'm leaving it until I return from vacation (in case something goes horribly wrong). This is now my number one priority. More updates about this to follow - stay tuned!

Build 20190615: Added 37 new items for Lux

New features

  • Added lots of new items for Lux: 11 new sneaker styles, 6 new tops, 9 new hair styles, 9 new swimsuits and 2 pairs of tights.

Improvements

  • Changed the new "Unlock goodies" feature to drop more loot. It now drops up to 12 items from the Lux menu (or less if you've already unlocked them). Also, the same code is now published to all our social media sites at the same time, so you only need to follow us on one of them to unlock everything.

You don't need to follow us to unlock this stuff. They're the same items that are available by just looting dead enemies, and they don't give you an advantage in the game; all the drops are skins and cosmetic items.

Bug fixes

  • [Dogan Outpost] Fixed a bug where the next objective could fail to appear after finding all the flash drives for Ibrahim.

Build 20190613 is live: unlock codes + camera filters

New features

  • Added "Unlock Goodies" to the RHETT menu, which lets you enter codes from our social media posts. These codes unlock free content, such as new clothes for Lux.

I'll be releasing the first code this weekend. Each time a code is posted, it will only appear on one site (Twitter, Facebook or Instagram), so follow us on all three to maximise your chances of scoring loot. :)

  • Added "Camera Filter" to the RHETT menu under Options > Graphics. This feature lets you apply filters to the main camera, to give the game a different look or to apply effects before taking a screenshot. If you like them, I'll add more in future updates.

Improvements

  • Changed the key for displaying the RHETT menu to Escape. A few people asked for this change, and it's much more intuitive. The default key for Skip Dialogue is now "T".
  • Greatly improved the particle FX played when Lux respawns after dying.
  • Greatly improved the particle FX played when characters teleport (e.g. when Lux teleports to the Redaction Commission from the Hart residence).
  • Added a new particle effect around Lux when she heals by using a medkit or watermelon.

Bug fixes

  • The way the screen resolution was being set during the intro movie could stop the game window from maximising.
  • Chapter titles are now being displayed correctly across the game.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed Lux and other characters to easily push supply crates around by just walking into them.
  • [Twytham Green] Fixed a bug where the level could not be completed after killing all the chupacabras.
  • [Twytham Green] Fixed a bug where Lux would freeze in the jump pose after walking up some stairs in the marketplace.
  • [Twytham Green] Fixed invisible walls around perimeter to stop Lux falling off the cliff edge.
  • [Elysian Rendition] There were still a few rocks being rendered pink. This is now fixed.

Build 20190608 is live

Improvements

  • [New Shinjuku] Added floating dust particles to the Genji Service Tunnels.

Performance tuning

  • [Saint Sophia] Memory garbage collection is now executed while the "Are those trolls?" cutscene is playing.

Bug fixes

  • [Dogan Outpost] Fixed a bug where sometimes the SUV couldn't be ignited and the mission couldn't be completed.
  • [Dogan Outpost] Fixed a bug where the prompt to give the loot to Sheena was redisplayed.
  • [Dogan Outpost] Sheena's lip sync wasn't working during her last dialogue.
  • [Dogan Outpost] Sheena's hair was being rendered partially invisible when viewed from some angles.

Massive performance boost - really!

Build 20190605 is live, and it delivers a big boost to the frame rate. If you’re currently getting around 35 frames per second in levels like New Shinjuku, you should get around 60 fps with the new build.

Performance tuning

  • Massively boosted the frame rate by migrating to the high-performance IL2CPP compiler, and moving processing of skinned mesh renderers (e.g. Lux's clothes) to the GPU.

Improvements

  • [Dogan Outpost] Improved quality of shadows.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug introduced recently which broke the full screen display.
  • Screen resolution was not being saved correctly. This is working now, although you may need to set your resolution again the first time you launch the new build.
  • Fixed a rendering issue which occurred when Lux wore some of the variations of the Singapore Girl dress.
  • [Dogan Outpost] Fixed a bug where the SUV's exploding tyres would sometimes render as pink squares.
  • [New Shinjuku] The compass was not being displayed in the Genji Service Tunnels.
  • [Elysian Rendition] Fixed shader errors which were causing some rocks to be rendered as pink.

Notes

  • [If you want to check your frame rate, just press \ and it will be displayed in the bottom-right of your screen. Press it again to hide it.

New Shinjuku respawned!

Build 20190603 is live, and it brings a completely recreated environment for New Shinjuku and the Genji Service Tunnels. I hope you like it, and please do let me know if you run into any bugs or performance issues.

Lots more stuff coming later this month!

Improvements

  • [New Shinjuku] Recreated New Shinjuku and the Genji Service Tunnels from scratch. They look way better now, as well as being more interesting to explore. Genji Service Tunnels is also now much bigger than the old map.
  • Improved lighting and cinematic post-processing effects across the entire game. This not only improves the look of the game, but also the performance.

Performance tuning

  • Fixed a bug where vSync was being enabled sometimes even if this was not selected in Options. This may have caused performance issues on some PCs.
  • [Dandy Valley] Optimised the models for Agents Brannan and Croft by combining their skinned meshes. This reduces the workload passed to the GPU.
  • [Dandy Valley] Reduced the number of simultaneous enemies in the final battle in Dandy Valley. This improves the frame rate.
  • [Saint Sophia] Reduced the density of the forest in Saint Sophia. This results in less objects to render, improving the frame rate.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a new bug that was preventing explosive crates and barrels from always detonating.
  • Fixed a new bug that was sometimes preventing battles from ending correctly.
  • Fixed a configuration error where an enemy's "got hit" animation would sometimes be played back in mid-air.
  • [New Shinjuku] The new combat music for New Shinjuku was accidentally omitted from the first scene (where Lux meets Richersen).
  • [New Shinjuku] Richersen and his soldiers now hold their guns correctly when firing.
