Team Racing (update 2019-02-16)
Did you think that, as the game has already been released a long time ago, and there is a new game of the series on the horizon, support for this title is over? Surprise! This is an unannounced, unexpected, big update. Since the Ribbon Racer from the very beginning was oriented towards the multiplayer, I decided to take another step in this direction and so the Team Mode was created.
Here are the details of how it works:
+ team mode can be set only for multiplayer games (2-4 players). Players will be divided into teams as follows:
+++ if only two players playing, both will form one team, while all opponents controlled by AI will also form two-person teams
+++ if the three-player game, all three will form one team, while all opponents controlled by AI will also form three-person teams
+++ if 4 players are in game, players 1 and 2 will form one team, players 3 and 4 will form another one, while all opponents controlled by AI will also form two-person teams
+ collected boxes will work on all team members, i.e., if a player take a maximum speed bonus box, the other team members will also receive this bonus, however, if any player falls into the paralysis trap, his entire team will also be influenced by the paralysis
+ all powers, except slowing down the time, now have a team effect - that is, if one player uses turbo power, his whole team will be under the effect of turbo power, and if the player uses the power of flying, all members of his team will also start flying
+ missiles don't work on members of the same team (there is no friendly fire), and unlike boxes, missiles don't have a team effect - hitting one opponent will not cause that other members of his team will also be hit
+ while playing the tournament, players will still earn points individually for the achieved places in the race, however, on the summary list of the tournament will count the achievements of the whole team, and the number of points of the team will be the sum of points earned by all its members.
The team mode can be activated in the race settings (I replaced SkyView button, if you really used SkyView mode and want me to restore it, write in comments). Of course, to be able to use this mode, you must first set a number of players to at least 2.
Here is the general list of changes in this update:
+ SkyView mode removed
+ Team Racing added (action description above)
+ all routes have been optimized (although Amazing Amazon will probably continue to lower fps on low and medium computers)
+ changed the default number of opponents from 0 to 5 (because nobody's going to race with themselves anyway)
+ the appearance of the trap boxes has been changed to distinguish them from the bonus boxes
+ fixed some minor bugs
Gamepads support (2018-12-14)
Finally I managed (at least partially) how to work with gamepads on the Unity engine. So from now on, the Ribbon Racer controls settings allow you to use gamepad buttons or analog stick. Keyboard remains the default controller for Ribbon Racer, so if you want to use the gamepad, you must first change controls.
Because Unity is pretty lame with gamepads identification (because by default it doesn't identify which gamepad is in use), first you must assign to some action (probably forward, backward, left and right) the movement of the analog stick, because only by this element I can determine which specific controller you use and force Unity to assign rest of controls for the player to the same gamepad.
New controls possibilities were created based on a standard gamepad (because my budget is too low for other gamepads), so I don't know how it'll work with the Xbox or PS3 / PS4 controllers.
This is the most important change of this new update, but not the only one. So here's the summary of changes:
- added the ability to control by using up to 4 gamepads
- fixed small but significant error in AI control
- main menu buttons will no longer change colors in a lame fashion
- all car models that appeared anywhere in the game have been updated to the latest version
- the camera in the main menu moves a little faster
Physics/optimalization hot fix + position autosave (2018-10-28) - UPDATED
As I do not have any ultra computer, just yesterday I found out that Ribbon Racer can cut well on better computers (which was caused by overclocking the physics engine depending on fps). It was not enough that the game was solidly pruned, in addition, the cars bounced off the bumps as if they were made of gum (I will not mention ice puddles, which notoriously turned cars by 180 degrees, as the detection of collisions and triggers in Unity is made by the physics engine) .
That's why I quickly got to work and solve this problem.
So here are the changes from the new update:
- the maximum level of physics has been severely limited
- ice puddles are less destructive
- autosave of the car position has been added, so that after getting out of the road / falling into the lava / falling into the abyss, etc. we will not be teleported back half of track (I hope that I was able to include all cases in the autosave rules players will not be respawning over the lava or somewhere off the road ...)
-- after respawn car will have 3 secs of flying power to eventually return on track
- players' names have been changed ("GR" switched to "P", because "GR" was from polish version and I forgot to change it in english version :P)
And that's it. Greetings to all current and future players :)
Settings update (2018-10-18)
Steam doesn't allow to run default Unity settings tab before running the game, so I decide to move all settings into game settings' section. In this update you can change graphic quality and display resolution in-game. I also added music and sound volume option (I know that should be in game from the start, but on Unity it's not that easy to make).
Other changes:
- now you can't quit game by using Escape button
- more signs and save points at "Underground Factory" track
- some little changes at "Mountain" track
Achievements not working (?!) Resolved
Nevermind, I accidentaly resolve this problem. Steam achievements should work well now ;)
