Development Status Update #5 - Vehicles
Greetings, Operators!
Best wishes from the Beta 2 Games team to all our followers in the New Year! We hope to finally deliver Riot Operator to you in 2023, even though we don't have the exact launch date for you yet. Still, we recommend checking our announcements on regular basis to stay updated about potential upcoming beta tests for the game!
Vehicles
Playing Riot Operator is all about efficiency. Your budget is limited and you will have to constantly assess whether it's better to hire new units or provide your experienced members with a new vehicle. The advantage is obvious - a vehicle allows you to move across the map faster. It becomes especially important when people's lives are at stake and every minute counts. Moving your units with an ambulance, fire truck or police car will allow you to react to incidents swiftly. But the number of units a vehicle can hold is limited.
For example - the most basic police car for the police units is relatively cheap and very fast. You can move from one end of the map to another in a blink of an eye. But this vehicle is adapted to having two police units on board. Such a small unit can react to a smaller incident but won't be able to deal with a huge group of protesters. Proper planning is mandatory in order to achieve success.
Let's see them in action!
Below you can see some examples of how different vehicles look in the game right now.
Ambulance
Fire truck
Police Car What do you think about those vehicles? Do you think that it's all about mobility or maybe you prefer to invest in sheer numbers of units?

Development Status Update #4 - Police Equipment
Greetings, Operators!
We have shown you the barriers last month, and now it's time to take a closer look at the full range of equipment that is available to the police units! While medics and firefighters don't have as many tools at their disposal, it's always good to analyze your current needs, when it comes to the police. Are there any aggressive rioters? Do you have to close the movement for certain streets? Prepare for your job accordingly and your duty will get way easier.
Police Equipment
You can equip your units with the following equipment:
Barriers - to stop the movement in certain areas,
Plastic handcuffs - very useful when dealing with aggressive rioters. Arresting agitators will help you with controlling the crowds. Mind you, arresting too many rioters will result in a negative reputation!
Police batons - increases the offensive capability of the unit. Ordering the units to fight with batons will cause casualties on both sides. Always have your medics close if it seems like you won't be able to avoid the confrontation.
Shields - increases the defensive capability of the unit. Holding your ground is not an easy job. You can expect some of the rioters to throw nearby objects at you. Large police shields will help with ensuring that the damage on your side will be kept at a minimum.
Tear Gas - allows you to disperse huge aggressive crowds that are not willing to move. Mind you, hurting peaceful protesters with tear gas will also result in a negative reputation.
As you can see, the equipment is varied and has to be used mindfully. You have to be as efficient, as possible, while causing the least possible damage. Becoming too aggressive will result in drops in reputation. While you can make some mistakes, remember that a negative reputation means you are going to lose the mission.
How do they work
Let's take a quick look at the current visualization of two mechanics, that are related to the equipment mentioned above - arresting with plastic handcuffs and dispersing the crowd with tear gas.
We hope that this announcement and the videos have provided you with a little bit more advanced insight into the police units. Let us know how you feel about those tools at your disposal! How would you equip your own police units?
Best regards, Riot Operator Team
Development Status Update #3 - Barriers
Greetings, Operators!
Our work on the Alpha build for Riot Operator is as busy as ever! Right now we are focused on adding new equipment and features for existing units. A great example of such equipment is a barrier that prevents the crowd from passing through a certain area.
Barriers
The barriers have some interesting features that are unique to them:
A barrier can block the crowd, but it has its limits. If the crowd gets too big, it is possible to destroy the barrier.
The more barriers you buy for the police unit placing the barrier, the longer barrier you can create. Placing barriers in strategic places will make your job way easier!
Early visualization
Below is the video with an early version of the barrier, showcasing its utility! Right now, it is quite short from the visual perspective and we plan to change the look of it slightly, but you can see how the general process of using a barrier will look in the game. If you have any feedback about it, please feel free to let us know!
Best regards, Riot Operator Team
Development Status Update #2
Greetings, Operators!
The second Development Update is here! The vertical Slice phase of the development is officially over and now we are working on the alpha build for Riot Operator. We know that we aren't posting as often, as you would like us to, but hopefully, you will like all the new elements that we are implementing in the game. Let's take a quick look at the recent changes!
Score System Overhaul
Previously, the player was obtaining or losing points based on his actions towards the main objective. Additional points were possible to get when completing side incidents. The system was fair but felt unrewarding at times. We have recently made adjustments to it, providing the player with points dynamically based on their actions. For example - now it's possible to fail a side mission, which tells us to chase away rioters from a place, but still gain points due to attending to the wounded with medic units and taking care of peoples' health.
New Mission Objectives
Every mission is going to consist of a main objective and side incidents happening all over the map. We are currently fleshing out those actions that you will have to take care of during each mission. For example, during the stage which takes place in Warsaw, Poland, the player is going to have to take care of marching protesters and protect them from aggressive rioters. Being in the move and reacting quickly is going to be the main goal of this mission. In the meantime, other stages might tell you to stop the rioters from gathering at one important point on the map, making it all more about planning and preparing.
BONUS: A quick image from a side incident, where firemen are putting out the fire.
Default units, squad duplicating
When playing the early builds of the game, we have noticed that it's quite hard to build the whole squad from the scratch at the beginning. That's why we have decided to implement two important features - default units and squad duplicating. Default units are going to be given to the player at the beginning of each mission, so we have some basic setup to rely on. Usually, it's going to be one unit of policemen, medics, and firefighters. Squad duplicating allows for quick duplication of the currently existing squad with all the attached equipment. It saves us a lot of time and allows for running adjustments in a matter of seconds.
Of course, other than that, we are adding several other new features to the game, and continue on adding new scenarios and incidents that can happen on the map. On top of it, it's very important for us to prepare a solid AI for the protesters and rioters and this element is being improved with every iteration. There's still some time before we are going to reach the Beta phase, but we expect that moment to be especially interesting to you, as closed tests are going to be conducted at that point.
Thank you for following Riot Operator!
Best regards, Beta 2 Games Team
Development Status Update
Greetings, Operators!
The Steam Page has been published for a while now, but we haven't had a chance to talk to you directly yet. We are Beta 2 Games and in co-operation with our publisher, Games Operators, we are creating Riot Operator, an exciting simulation game about riot control management. This is our biggest project up to date, so keep your fingers crossed for us! We want to do our best with this game!
Vertical Slice
So where are we exactly at the moment? We are finishing the "vertical slice" phase, which is considered a small, fully playable portion of the game, containing most of the mechanics that are planned for the full project scope. Some minor visual improvements have also been made and the game is shaping up to look really nice in its minimalistic aesthetic.
After that, we will work on the alpha build and later on - the beta build - which might be especially interesting for you, if you want to play the game early and share your feedback with us.
Release date
Our current plan is to launch the game at the beginning of Q4 2022. So there are still at least 9 months of hard work ahead of us. Mind you, we are planning to run some extensive community and closed beta tests. So the final decision is going to be made only after we can see your feedback. If the game's early reviews are going to be unsatisfying, we might delay this launch even further.
Early Gameplay Teaser
If you're interested in the progress we are making with the game, we are happy to present you with this short gameplay teaser, recorded 100% from within the game. What's important - this game is still a work in progress and might change a lot! It applies to both the visual side of the project and the gameplay logic itself. For example - we are constantly making improvements to the rioters' AI, to make this part of gameplay really satisfying.
What do you think about this gameplay teaser? Let us know in the comments, we are really interested in your initial reactions to it!
