We are excited to announce that Road to Guangdong's chapter 2 update is now live!
We've been taking all of your feedback on board and have spent the months since launch updating and overhauling the game. This is the first piece of new content, expanding upon and continuing Sunny and Guu Ma's quest to gain support for the family restaurant.

UPDATE NOW LIVE | Major Game Overhaul
Hello all,
We've just launched a massive Road to Guangdong update which overhauls and improves the game's current content, ahead of new content next week.
This update makes the game feel much more open and seamless and less like a series of menus, with you now having to drive into gas stations/garages. The inventory management system has been overhauled, and elements of the story have been re-written too.
We invite you to give Road to Guangdong a go with this new update installed, as this marks a major revamp of the game's existing content. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the Steam forums and via Steam reviews!
Remember that we are holding a Steam free weekend event from 6 - 8 December, and that the Chapter 2 update, continuing Sunny and Guu Ma's heartfelt road trip, will launch next week.
Update Details
Roadside Garages
All garages now appear at the side of the road. You can now pull into and park at any garage you want. When finished, pull out of the garage and onto the road. This makes the game feel much more open and seamless
You will also need to concentrate to ensure that you don’t drive past a garage and miss the opportunity to refill and restock.
You now also have to pull over by the side of the road in the indicated locations to reach story segments.
Removal of the Progress Bar
Now garages are at the side of the road, we wanted to add a sense of drama and tension. To do this we have removed the progress bar from the top of the screen. You will now no longer know when the next garage is coming and so you'll need to manage your resources carefully.
Updated Inventory
We have created a single unified inventory that holds oil and fuel cans as well as parts. We have also reduced the inventory to just 12 slots. This brings resource management to the forefront of the game. You will need to carefully manage what parts to keep and discard to make best use of the space available.
Updated Repair System
The repair system has been augmented to show a clearer link between the inventory and your actions, making the repair gameplay easier to navigate.
Updated Tutorial We have honed the tutorial into a simpler and shorter experience. You now spend less time driving backwards and forwards between the mechanic and the restaurant. We have also made the dialogue more direct to ensure that yous understand your goals and objectives.
All Locations Unlocked The farm story, and Gu Maa’s friend story are now unlocked from the beginning of the game, so you have a choice about which location to visit first.
Updated Farm Story We have re-written the farm story to reduce the volume of dialogue, and make your choices more impactful.
Removed Kung Fu Story (For Now) We have removed the Kung Fu for now to ensure only the better quality stories are in the game for now. This will make a return once it has been re-written and improved.
Thanks, The Road to Guangdong Team

NEW UPDATE NOW LIVE | Guu Ma Comes Along for the Ride!
Hello all,
Thank you for your patience regarding Road to Guangdong updates. We are happy to announce that we've just launched a brand new update which adds Guu Ma in the car, along on the journey with you.
If you're yet to jump behind the steering wheel, why not do so now at our deepest discount yet!
Your beloved Aunt will now offer advice, random nuggets of wisdom, anecdotes, share her opinions on music and may even occasionally fall asleep.
You're also now able to look around the car more freely from the driver's seat!
We are hard at work on upcoming updates, including more open and natural road-to-gas stop transitions as well as, of course, Chapter 2 of Sunny and Guu Ma's 3 part story.
But, for now, take a look at today's full update details:
New Features
Guu Ma is now in the car with Sunny and will offer advice, random nuggets of wisdom, and anecdotes.
She also falls asleep and has her own opinions about music.
You are now able to look around in the driver's seat more freely.
NOTE: Since the game is still in Early Access and further improvements will be made to this Guu Ma in the car system, the new dialogue is currently only available in English and Simplified Chinese. This means that Guu Ma's in car text will appear localised as follows:
Playing in simplified or traditional Chinese - Guu Ma's in-car text will appear in simplified Chinese.
Playing in any other language - Guu Ma's in car text will appear in English.
Fan belt wear and fit are now linked to the engine's cooling efficiency - a loose and/or worn fanbelt will tend to leave the engine running at a higher temperature increasing the risk of serious damage and breakdowns to the engine.
Bug Fixes and Tweaks
Fixed several unreported UI bugs
Tweaks to car component wear and tear so quality makes more difference - e.g. low quality fanbelts will wear and loosen faster than high quality ones.
UPDATE NOW LIVE - More Interactivity With Sandy, Manually Ignite the Engine etc
Hello all,
Road to Guangdong's new update is here delivering a range of key features and improvements! This is just the beginning of our planned Early Access updates, and we can't wait to update the game further!
If you're yet to jump into the rapidly improving Road to Guangdong, now's the time! The game is available at 20% off in the Steam Summer Sale until Tuesday!
Based on your feedback, we have added more interactivity with Sandy - instead of starting the engine via a button prompt in the UI, you now ignite the engine manually by turning the key on the dashboard. Headlights no longer turn on automatically - it's down to you to manually turn on the headlights via the car dashboard.
You can now also change radio channel and volume via interacting directly with the radio. Now, you enter and exit the car by clicking on the car door when you're on the road and wish to repair the car!
And finally, sensitivity options have now been added in the menu.
Thanks,
The Road to Guangdong Team
UPDATE NOW LIVE | Vehicle Wear and Damage Systems Overhauled
Hello all,
We have just made live a game changing update which overhauls the way Road to Guangdong's vehicle wear and damage systems work. These changes mean that Sandy will now breakdown more often, creating a more direct connection between you, the player, and Sandy.
Major overhaul of the vehicle wear and damage systems
Added concept of "quality" to all vehicle components
Quality affects both wear and damage
Wear is based on mechanical wear & varies from component to component
Primary drivers are usually a combination of: engine revs, coolant temp, oil level, & part quality
Damage is based on a statistical model of mechanical failures when the components are under stress
High revs and engine temperature increases the likelihood of serious damage to components
Lower quality parts are more likely to take random damage, and have a higher maximum random damage
To balance this and account for planned future improvements in the game flow between story sections and driving sections we...
Increased starting money by 300
Save games from the previous version should get 300 added to the saved balance, but we still advise starting a fresh game
Each completed story will now gift a 10l can of petrol, a 3l bottle of oil, and 150 money
Cost of being recovered to a garage has been reduced to 75
General Advice on New Wear and Tear Systems
Be cautious, try to keep the engine temperature low
Higher quality components will generally last longer
Don't be afraid to use scrap parts
General Polish and Improvement
Adjusted gear ratios to get approx. 2500 revs at cruising speed of 40 in 3rd gear, 60 in 4th
Tweaked the analogue steering sensitivity curves to be less twitchy on medium bends
Improved clarity of colours on the health bars in the repair & garage UIs
Increased range of camera look in repair mode to feel less restrictive
Tweaked AI driving speeds to account for the constraints of the new wear & damage model
Other minor things here and there
Bug Fixes
Fixed several (unreported!) control bugs which were hangovers from prototype builds
Various other lesser bugfixes
Thanks,
The Road to Guangdong Team
UPDATE NOW LIVE - Car Repair Update
Hello all,
Road to Guangdong has just received an update! The focus is on making the breaking down and repairing elements of the game more seamless and feel less like a set of menus. Now, when checking your car, there's no loading screen, and instead of repairing and walking around the car in the manual-like mode, you now walk around the car out on the road itself.
We've also tweaked the procedural generation of the tea fields and industrial plane environments in order to make the roads more interesting to drive along!
This is just the beginning of our continued Early Access support and updates for Road to Guangdong, and we will be launching more updates very soon.
Take a look at the following forum post to find out more on our immediate update plans: https://steamcommunity.com/app/995840/discussions/1/1638661595049951791/
Full Patch Notes
Updated 1st stage of tutorial - latest tutorial is now localised into all supported languages
Tweaked car handling/setup - now has 4 gears, slightly higher engine power and the suspension is now a little more "rolly" (like an old car would be)
Tweaked the procedural generation settings for "tea fields" and "industrial plane" road types to make them more interesting to drive along
Minor tweaks to AI
Repair Anywhere™! No need to load into repair mode any more.
Repair mode: camera tweaked to be slightly further from the car
Repair mode: haynes-o-vision shader disabled unless a mechanic is repairing for you
First Update Now Live! Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Added
Hello all,
We're delighted to announce that the first ever Road to Guangdong update is here, which introduces an engine temperature indicator gauge on the car dashboard.
The engine coolant temperature gauge is now active on the dashboard.
This important gauge gives you valuable information in how hot your engine is getting. If the temperature is rising you are probably over revving the engine and causing wear and tear.
We know we have lots of feedback to address, so expect more updates next week! You can find a list of our priorities for the next few weeks here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/995840/discussions/1/1638661595049951791/
Thank you all for your support.
