Free Movement Teaser


Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of the positivity and encouragement regarding the free movement announcement, I'm really happy you're looking forward to it! Now that it's known that I've started working on free movement, I wanted to provide a bit of info to help answer some questions. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know and I'll try to answer!


  1. I just started working on free movement several days ago, so there's still quite a ways to go for full support. At this time I don't have an ETA for the initial release. I wanted to go ahead and announce it now so I can include the community in the process and share each bit of progress as I go.

  2. Currently I have a few basic things working, as seen in the video: freedom to move around within tiles that are walkable, locked mouse so you can freely look around without holding the right mouse button down, interaction with objects on adjacent tiles, and a setting in the options menu for mouse sensitivity.

  3. Grid-based movement will remain the default system and will not be affected in any way by free movement being added. I'll also be continuing to build out the skill system and other existing features in parallel with this, as well as begin the transition to Godot 4.0 now that the beta stage has been reached.

  4. The initial release will likely be first-person only and will use the current navigation system to determine which tiles the player can walk on and the objects that can be interacted with from those tiles. While I do plan for further flexibility in the future (e.g. with the use of custom collision boxes) this will simplify things a lot up front.


I'm really happy with what I already have so far - it feels great just to be able to explore more freely within each tile's square, in particular in smaller, cramped areas like inside the example house. I'm excited to share more as I go! 😄

Beyond 1.0: Update #3



Hi everyone! The Indiegogo campaign is now at 42% funded with only a week remaining. Thank you so much to the 84 wonderful backers who have helped get it to this point. Every little bit helps! Even if you don't feel like $5 would make a difference, know that it does! It's understandable that not everyone can afford to contribute to the campaign monetarily, but if everyone who is able to does contribute it will add up very quickly. I know we can make this happen together with everyone's help!

If you know anyone with a large reach or following (content creators, influencers, other indie developers, etc.) who may be willing to check out RPG in a Box and share about the Indiegogo campaign (or RPG in a Box in general) to others, please either reach out to them or let me know and I'll contact them directly. In the end, more visibility for RPG in a Box is the most important thing. Even if the campaign succeeds, if more people don't share about RPG in a Box and take a chance on it, the campaign will only be a short-term temporary fix. I really appreciate your support in getting this to where it is. We recently crossed the $1,200 mark with 21 days remaining which is awesome, but there's still a long way to go! RPG in a Box is a serious dream and an extension of who I am, and I truly believe that there's something in it for everyone, whether you're completely new to making games and want to bring a story or idea to life, or you're an experienced developer looking for a breath of fresh air. You can even have a lot of fun just creating a world for yourself to play around in and explore!

Speaking of creating worlds to play around in, over the weekend I made some more progress on the Kenney Tiny Dungeon asset conversion. I handmade the tiles into 3D using the built-in Voxel Editor and built this map in RPG in a Box all within a few hours! I'm planning to include these in the official Asset Library. Check out this short video I made demonstrating the tileset in action!
