Hello, and welcome to another instalment of This Week In RuneScape! Today we'll - hey, wait, did you see that? There it is again! This can mean only one thing: the Ninja Team are back with another Strike! Let's try and catch up with them...
Game News
Ninja Strike 23: Scattershot
We managed to pin down the Ninjas to talk about their latest Ninja Strike - a Scattershot update that aims to make all kinds of improvements across the game.
First up, we have a much-requested new feature: Legendary Pet overrides! You can now change the visual appearance of your Legendary Pets to any companion, boss, or skilling pet you have unlocked. To do so, head to the Pets interface, where you'll find a new checkbox to enable this option.
Next, the Ninjas followed in Mod Iago and Mod Ramen's footsteps and headed to the Lost Grove, where they've been busy gathering up Grimoire Pages and adding them to the loot tables of the Slayer creatures. Speaking of loot tables, they've also rebalanced Solak's drops and made them a little bit more rewarding.
But that's not all! Check the Patch Notes to see everything the Ninjas have been up to.
Mobile Interface Changes
We've made some tweaks to the appearance of the Home Screen on mobile. Basically, we've switched up the layout to make certain things more visible, including your player name, currencies, and the number of the world you're on.
We've also removed the 'Store' button on the HUD.
Rest assured, we're paying close attention to all your feedback, and our mobile teams are working on more improvements as we speak. Keep those ears to the ground!
Patch Notes
Ninja Strike 23
Legendary & Object Pets
The appearance of Legendary Pets can now be overridden with companion, boss, and skilling pets.
This option is accessed via a new checkbox on the Pets interface.
Overridden pets will behave almost exactly as usual but won't be able to fight other Legendary Pets.
The Chameleon has been converted from an object to a pet in the Customisation interface.
If you've lost a Chameleon, you can reclaim it by speaking to any pet shop owner (in the game, of course) and asking them about strays.
The Chameleon recolour interface has been updated.
The chosen colour will now persist when re-summoning the pet across game sessions.
Both baby and adult Chameleons can now be added to the Player Owned House Menagerie.
You will no longer receive Chameleon Eggs after obtaining the Chameleon pet.
Raccoons have been converted from object pets to pets in the Customisation interface.
If you have misplaced your Raccoon, speak to a pet shop owner to select one in the colour of your choice.
Baby Raccoons can now be added to the Player Owned House Menagerie.
You will still be able to catch Raccoons in Box Traps (you monster), but this will not unlock additional pets.
Solak & The Lost Grove
Torn Grimoire Pages have been added to the loot table of Lost Grove Slayer creatures.
The chance to receive pages is increased while on a Slayer Task.
Increased the quantities of select Solak drops and adjusted the chance to roll them:
The quantity of Banite Stone Spirits has increased from 50-70 to 80-110.
The quantity of Light Animica Stone Spirits has increased from 40-50 to 60-90.
The chance to drop Banite Stone Spirits has been slightly lowered, and the chance to gain Light Animica Stone Spirits has been raised to fill the gap.
Tiny Spiky Rune Salvage has been changed to Medium Bladed Rune Salvage and will be received in quantities of 30-45.
Battlestaves have been changed to Mystic Earth Battlestaves and will drop in quantities of 30-50.
General QoL
Various improvements to the Enchanted Lyre:
The tooltip now displays charges remaining.
An option interface is now used to change the quick teleport destination, instead of a dialogue box.

'Change teleport location' is now 'Configure'.
'Play' will now ask you where you want to go.
'Quick teleport' will now take you directly to your configured quick teleport location.
Various improvements to the Fremennik Sea Boots:
The 'Operate' option now uses an option interface instead of a dialogue box.
Using the Lyre's teleport from the Boots will now let you choose a destination or use the configured quick teleport destination.
The Lyre's quick teleport can now be configured from the Boots' options.
All Skill Outfits will now prompt you to destroy all pieces after one piece is destroyed.
The Achievement interface will now remember what you were looking at when you close and reopen it.
This will not occur when logging out before reopening.

RuneScape: The First 20 Years
We’ve partnered with Dark Horse Comics to bring you RuneScape: The First 20 Years, a lavishly illustrated, full-colour, hardcover book filled with insider info about the best game in the world – this one!
Dark Horse recruited Alex Calvin, the founder of PCGamesInsider, to interview all your favourite J-Mods, past and present. They also pored over 20 years’ worth of illustrations, concept art and various other bits and bobs to create an illustrated history of the development of the games over the past 20 years, covering both RuneScape and its precocious younger sibling, Old School RuneScape.
Check out below for a sneak peek of some of the 224 full colour pages in the book.
Or, for our most dedicated fans, we have the Deluxe Edition, featuring a black cover with foil treatments – very fancy! The final design is revealed below and comes with gilded page edges, a card slipcase, a ribbon bookmark and a hard-backed folio containing two archive-quality art prints.
The first folio print is an iconic Tim and Crunchy illustration. The second, which has just been revealed, is a battle scene from the archives featuring General Graador. Created in 2012 for a series of unused loading screens depicting the God Wars, the note on the illustration reads “The Lesser Gods opened gates between Gielinor and other neighbouring realms and brought into it new races to fight their battles”.
RuneScape: The First 20 Years Deluxe Edition - pre-order from the Official Merch Store.
Both editions will be published and available for delivery from October 2021. Keep an eye out for more details - including more sample pages - over the coming months!

Loading and login issues
Update: 21:00 Game Time
We have no major updates to share for this hourly update. Our team are continuing to actively work on the issues. We're seeing improved results from the steps we've taken to mitigate loading and cache issues, but we're still working on the root cause. Thanks ever so much for the continued patience - we'll provide another update in an hour.
Update: 19:40 Game Time
A new Android Client Update is now available. Please download this update from the Google Play Store if you are experiencing issues - this may resolve or reduce them. We still highly recommend allowing your cache to load fully in the lobby before playing. We have also implemented some temporary steps to help improving loading and cache issues. Initial results have improved load times, but work is still ongoing to fully resolve the situation.
Original Update
We've been blown away by the amount of people downloading RuneScape on Mobile. Unfortunately however, due to the large quantity of people downloading the app we're experiencing some issues that may cause slow loading or login issues.
To help tackle these issues, please wait for the cache to fully download on the Lobby Screen. We're continuing work to fix the root cause of the issue and will share more as soon as we can.
Thanks for your patience!
Mobile Launch & Elder God Wars - A Message From Mod Warden
Hey ‘Scapers,
Today is a significant moment in RuneScape’s history, ushering in the next chapter of our cross-play vision and our quest to bring RuneScape to everywhere we can. We have finally arrived on Mobile!
Moments ago, we finished our final pre-launch checks and they are all green. Deployment of RuneScape around the world has begun, marking June 17th as our official launch day for iOS and Android.
Taking it all in, this is really a big deal. You can play 20 years of RuneScape content on the world’s largest gaming platform and it all fits in your pocket. Play on the go and then jump over to desktop if you like, with nearly the same experience, taking everything with you – almost unthinkable!
This is my favorite part… the RuneScape community has been growing in leaps and bounds. Our expectations with the launch on Steam last year were smashed, and by reaching new audiences with mobile, a Tsunami of new citizens are about to embark upon the thriving world of Gielinor. What an amazing opportunity to make new friends and I cannot wait to hear the tales of discovery and accomplishment.
In our mission to find new adventurers and to influence a successful launch on mobile, you helped us smash the last of the pre-registration goals. In fact, all five tiers have now been unlocked (actually, it was yesterday!) and we just hit 1.8 MILLION registrations in total. What a feat! So, all those sweet rewards have been unlocked and will be delivered to you as part of the launch – yes, they are on the way for everyone!
In my mind, there is no better time to play RuneScape. Over the coming months the Elder God Wars really heats up with the City of Senntisten launching next week. We have told you War is Coming, and I am excited to confirm War is Here this July with the first front of the Elder God Wars Dungeon. The fate of Gielinor will be decided across four fronts and each month from July onwards, players will experience a new front on the battlefield as the Elder Gods begin their assault. This will be the most varied and epic dungeon experiences yet, with elements that span across bossing, slayer, skilling and more! This is on top of the returning updates from our Ninja Team, fan-favourite events like The Beach, several technical improvements and other surprises to come that will make this a summer to remember.
Just before signing off, I’d like to leave you with one last thought.
These are fantastical times and this year, RuneScape has been in existence for 20 years. We broke several records, and membership is at its highest level in six years. Players are playing the game more than ever before. And then I think back to this.
With moments like these, knowing how much effort our team put into this launch, makes me proud of this achievement - knowing we can make RuneScape for many more years to come, and that it's something we can do together!
So, on that, there’s nothing left to say expect let’s pull up the welcome wagons and show these new citizens what we’re all about! See you in Burthorpe.

RuneScape on Mobile Launches on Thursday!
It's the moment you've been waiting for: RuneScape will go live on iOS and Android devices this Thursday, June 17th.
Get yourself hyped before the big event by joining the J-Mods on Wednesday for an all-singing, all-dancing launch stream as they count down to launch. If you're lucky, you'll be in time to watch them press the launch button!
By the way, if you haven't pre-registered yet, now's the time to do it! You'll get access to all the exclusive pre-registration rewards unlocked so far - and remember, the more registrations we get, the more rewards there'll be! C'mon, you know you'd look good in that Crux Eqal armour.
The Ninja Team are back with a bumper round of improvements! This week they've set their sights on Familiars.
First up, several core Familiar behaviours have been improved! Auto-firing scrolls is now easier than ever, and some previously pacifistic Familiars can now be ordered to viciously slaughter your enemies. It's high time those Unicorn Stallions had their revenge!
The math-enjoyers among you will also be happy to hear that all Familiar durations have been standardised along 16-minute increments, which makes them both easier to remember and a fun way to brush up on your times tables. This change has also affected the Anachronia Summoning Totem, which will now boost your Familiar's duration by a neat 16 minutes instead of the nebulous '10%' of yesteryear.
The Familiar UI is also much improved, with new settings, buttons and details for you to enjoy. You know, if that's your kind of thing.
Lastly, we've renamed various Familiar scrolls so that it's more clear which Familiars they belong to. Tooltips and other information have been updated accordingly.
If you're looking to get 'familiar' with the fine details of this update, be sure to check out the Patch Notes!
Battle of The Monolith
This week, the Battle of the Monolith comes to its epic conclusion. Everything you know is about to change, as old friends (ancient even) become enemies, fall prey to forces beyond their control, and change beyond your wildest imaginings. Be sure to tune in live to grab your repeatable 10% XP bonus!
Oh, and don't forget to tune in next week for the epilogue, which will set the scene for what's coming next. You might have won the battle - but can you win the war?
Tech Update: Improved Cubemaps
We're thrilled to announce that this week's update also includes a long-awaited update to Cubemaps!
"Cube-what-nows?"
Cubemaps are what we use to tell the textures on your character - especially the shiny, reflective bits - what the world around them looks like. Specifically, it tells them how the lighting around you should interact with your character.
Imagine the dank swamps of Morytania. It looks very different from, say, the bright open skies of Stormguard Citadel, right? With Cubemaps, the game is able to pick up on that difference and apply it to your lovely shiny armour.
To cut a long explanation short, Cubemaps mean that you'll get better looking, more natural graphics with better reflections across their surfaces. Those of you who felt that newer cosmetics looked washed out in certain environments will now notice that they look much better in almost all circumstances.
If you'd like to learn more about Cubemaps and see how this huge project actually works, check out the video below, hosted by Mod Chilly, the Cubemaps maestro!
Familiars will now return to players faster when stuck against terrain.
Familiars that previously only fought in self-defence, such as Bunyips or Unicorn Stallions, can now be ordered to attack (they still won't attack by default).
A new 'Combat Mode' Summoning setting will set your Familiar to always attack your current target, attack only in self-defence, or never attack unless specifically commanded to.
The duration of all Familiars has been standardised to increments of 16 minutes - 16, 32, 48, 64 and so on.
Some outliers have been rebalanced and had their duration increased or decreased where appropriate.
Dungeoneering and Stealing Creation Familiars will all last for 64 minutes and 32 minutes respectively.
The Anachronia Totem of Summoning now increases all Familiar durations by 16 minutes instead of by 10%.
All Familiars except Spirit Pack and Prayer Pigs may now store their respective scrolls.
The following Familiars can now auto-fire their scrolls:
Spirit Spider
Macaw
Spirit Terrorbird
Ibis
Fruit Bat
Nightmare Muspah
Ghast
Spirit War Pig
Ravenous Locus
Some Familiars can no longer have their auto-fire set. Previously, these Familiars could set a rate but would never actually fire.
Legendary pets with the Beast of Burden ability can now be turned into Beasts of Burden by left-clicking or tapping the pouch.
Familiars: UI
The 'Follower Details' interface has been updated:
Various icons have been replaced with new graphics.
The familiar special points bar is now green, the same colour as its action bar variant.
Added a button to set the special attack auto-fire rate and removed the right-click option to do the same thing on the special points bar.
Added a new button to directly access Familiar Settings from the Settings interface.
Added a new button to store or take scrolls with four different options: 'store max', 'take all', 'store x' and 'take x'.
Added a new information panel which, when expanded, displays all information regarding the Familiar which could usually be found on the Pouch.
Added hover/tap tooltips to various interface components.
The indicator for scrolls remaining in the Backpack and held by the Familiar has been made more prominent.
Interface components will now auto-adjust when resizing the interface.
These changes also apply to the Beast of Burden Inventory view, where you'll find a new collapsible panel for the relevant buttons.
Added two new settings to automatically close and open the Follower Details interface when a Familiar spawns or despawns.
On Mobile, the Beast of Burden Inventory now has bigger slots for better visibility.
With few exceptions, despawning familiars will no longer automatically close open interfaces.
Follower interaction settings can now be found in the main Settings menu, under both Combat and Skilling options.
Familiars: General QoL
Tooltips for Summoning Pouches now display:
Summoning level required
Familiar duration
Type of Familiar, i.e. Beast of Burden or Skill Booster
Familiar abilities, if applicable
Relevant scroll and effect
Which Combat Mode is enabled by default
Highlighted keywording
Familiar scrolls have had a similar tooltip touch-up and now display the Familiar they belong to and how many special move points they'll consume.
Familiar scrolls are now also named after their respective Familiars. For example, 'Death from Above' is now 'Ripper Demon Scroll (Death From Above)'.
Dungeoneering and Stealing Creation Familiars have also had their scroll and Pouch information updated.
Those same Familiars can also hold their own scrolls now.
They'll also be affected by the Anachronia Summoning Totem.
Various Familiar buttons can now be dragged to the action bar, including:
Give to Beast of Burden
Take from Beast of Burden
Dismiss Familiar
Call Familiar
Use Scroll
Attack
Renew
When a Familiar despawns, any scrolls it was holding will now be sent to the Backpack. If space is not available, they will go to the Bank. If the Bank is also full, they'll be dropped.
Added info-box messages for various erroneous actions, such as casting scrolls for a Familiar when there are none available.
The term 'Summoning special points' has been changed to 'Familiar special points'.
Abyssal Familiars now use the bank note terminology rather than 'certs'.

Action bar icons will now update properly when removing abilities or switching between pages.
The empty spaces in sliding block puzzles will now appear correctly.
Fixed a rare crash when placing walk markers.

RuneScape is now only available on iOS versions 14.0 and above.
Improved point light brightness on mobile devices.
Improved the speed of cache validation.
Added contextual keyboards and auto-correction on keyboards for iOS.
Marketplace
The option to purchase 'X' amount has been re-added to the Oddments Store.
Silver members can once again upgrade their Silver Premier Club to Gold via the Bonds Store on the Marketplace.
Players are now required to enter their Bank PIN if accessing the Marketplace through the lobby.
The Marketplace now loads correctly on MacOS.

Prevented client stuttering after exiting the cutscene where Magic Stick appears.
Players can no longer receive unlimited Beans during the Manor Farm tutorial.
Reworked Cubemaps, resulting in more natural-looking cosmetics with better surface reflections.
Social tabs in the lobby of the desktop client now extend to the correct height.

Battle Report, Pentember 18th
“Where are they coming from?” Saradomin exclaimed as he shot a bolt of magic right through a shadow behemoth’s torso. It shuddered and growled, but continued undeterred along its path toward the mortal armies.
“Less talk, more fighting.” Nex hissed, launching into the air to try to draw the behemoth away.
After three weeks of almost nonstop fighting, they were all exhausted. Even with the Frostenhorn’s power, each new behemoth was taking all their resources to bring down – and if Nex wasn’t mistaken, they were getting stronger.
The last time she’d even heard of a shadow behemoth they were described as denizens of the deepest shadow realm – but now that she’d fought a few and sniffed out the differences between her powers and theirs, she couldn’t help but wonder if these ones might be from somewhere else. Somewhere even worse.
“Nex!” Char called, somewhere far below. Nex hardly had time to look down before a sweeping, almost-invisible claw knocked her from the sky, sending her tumbling down towards the ground. She’d gotten tired. Sloppy. This was a war of attrition, and they were losing hard.
Dizzily, Nex got to her feet. The very ground seemed to shake as the behemoth roared and started towards her. She prepared an attack – a shadow ball or three would do the trick – and then found herself stumbling off-balance.
“What now?” Saradomin cried. Nex wasn’t imagining it after all – the ground was shaking, splitting, even. A wave of heat washed over her as the earth split and the behemoth howled, slipping inexorably into the chasm.
One shining obsidian claw reached over the edge, followed by another – and then, with a stony thunk, a creature the likes of which Nex had never seen pulled itself up and out of the pit.
“We are TokHaar,” it said, “This body is TokHaar-Hok, who speaks for all. We come to crush the invaders.”
Nex could only nod, dazed. She’d heard of the TokHaar – in legends, Azzanadra's intelligence reports – but never for a moment believed that she might see one for herself.
“Unbelievable,” Saradomin exclaimed, floating down to join them, “The World Guardian managed it.”
TokHaar-Hok bristled, turned, and fired a jet of flame at the behemoth, which was struggling to make its way out of the pit. It yelped and thrashed, and finally, in a desperate flail of shadow and claw, launched itself directly at its tormentor, clamping down around TokHaar-Hok’s middle and dragging what parts it could latch onto back into the pit as it fell.
Nex and Saradomin stared in shocked silence. A rock – maybe once part of an arm – fell to the ground with a soft thunk.
“… I was led to believe they would be more effective,” Nex managed.
But then the ground rumbled again. The pile of rocks that was TokHaar-Hok shuddered and clinked together. The heat intensified. Saradomin took a step back. Nex bared her teeth.
A shining, obsidian claw reached over the edge, followed by another, and another, and another. Where one TokHaar had fallen, five more stood. The smallest of the five scuttled across to the pile of rubble and began gathering it up. The largest one stepped forward.
“We are TokHaar-Hok,” it said, “Do not be concerned. The body is easily replaced.”
The creatures raised their arms, chanting in some primordial tongue Nex found impossible to place. With one last desperate howl from the behemoth, the great chasm zipped shut, leaving nothing in its place but scorched earth and the smell of burning shadow.
The largest of the creatures turned back towards them.
“This place is filled with impurities,” it said, idly twirling its massive claw.
“We will eliminate them.”

Extended Downtime: June 9th
We're having a little system brush-up this week, to make sure that we're completely protected from another login lockout. The team has already made plenty of improvements to add additional protection, but this extra push should fully eliminate the possibility of any other problems of this kind. For that reason, there will be extended downtime for roughly six hours on June 9th, running from 7am Game Time. Follow us on any of our social accounts to stay up-to-date on maintenance during the break!

The Frostenhorn bellowed, and Nex felt power surge through her, converging on the helpless shadow cackler caught beneath her claw. With a pitiful squeak, it imploded into smoke.
This wasn’t how they had envisioned the battle going. The plan, as far as Char knew, was simply to show up, seize the Monolith, and leave. Now they were fighting creatures from another universe and Zaros was nowhere to be seen.
Char took a breath, raising the Frostenhorn to her lips once more. But at that moment a vast, dark talon penetrated the swirling smoke, sweeping her cleanly off her feet. An enormous, chthonian-like beast of pure shadow towered over her, blocking out what little sun could still be seen.
“Char!” Nex screamed as the other claw struck down.
With fractions of a second to spare, Char heaved herself aside leaving the claw to violently rake across the earth, tendrils of shadow oozing in its wake. A light flashed. Char threw a hand across her face as the creature roared in agony.
“Be cautious!” Saradomin called from somewhere behind them. “It’s more powerful than the others!”
As if Char couldn’t tell. With the creature distracted, she jumped to her feet and raised the Frostenhorn once more. The creature readied to strike, but from nowhere a ball of shadow collided with its chest. It let out a howl of rage, lurching towards the source of its pain – Nex. She launched into the air, priming a second attack. Saradomin hurled a fresh lightning bolt at the beast, causing it to stagger, yet still it wouldn’t fall.
“What manner of creature have you summoned?” he barked.
“A shadow behemoth,” Nex retorted. “And we didn't summon it."
"Merely let it through the gate, then." Saradomin replied. "Watch out!"
Bellowing something between a shriek and a roar, the monster shook from head to toe, sending globs of oily shadow piercing in all directions. Char sidestepped them with ease, readying once again as they coalesced into small, angry shadow cacklers.
Before she could strike a ball of shadow flew into it at full speed and it dissolved, instantly. Char backed off, annoyed, and yelled up at Nex:
“Focus on the behemoth!”
With a grin, Nex did just that, swooping down to claw at the monster directly. Another cackler rose from the puddle at Char’s feet and she whirled into action, blasting it with a jet of flame just as a third popped up.
The air crackled and hissed with magic. The creature howled as Nex and Saradomin wore it down, spell by spell.
“We have to keep it away from the front lines!” Saradomin yelled.
Nex glanced over her shoulder at a small group of humans struggling to put down a limping shadow cackler.
“Agreed,” she hissed, drawing the behemoth back towards the Monolith. The shard of shadow deep within her heart thudded with adrenaline, eager to strike.
As if she’d read Nex’s mind, Char blew the Frostenhorn again as Nex flapped her wings. Acrid smoke enveloped the monster as it swiped furiously but fruitlessly at the air where Nex had been just seconds before.
The beast seemed to shrink and shudder, almost collapsing in on itself. Nex landed beside Saradomin, savouring the chance to catch her breath.
“Good to see you cleaning up your own messes,” Saradomin said, eyebrow raised.
“The fight’s not over yet,” Nex snarled. The shadow behemoth strained to its feet once more, snarled, and lurched around to face them. Its massive body flickered, and then it vanished entirely. Invisible.
