How to advance in Saga of Sins!

Story Arcade

We at Bonus Level like to describe Saga of Sins as a “Story Arcade” game. A title that combines arcade style gameplay - featuring lots of secrets and some RPG elements - with a meaningful story of inner conflict, twists and multiple endings, as well as a fresh take on progression.

Enter their minds

As you already know our hero Cecil needs to enter the minds the villagers of Sinwell - in the form of a demonic creature such as a Werewolf, Gargoyle or Griffin - to fight the seven deadly sins and thus free his home village from the plague.

And it will be up to you in which order you want to enter the people’s minds and progress through the game!

Track down the sinners

To make this task a convenient one, Cecil carries a notebook that he uses for tracking down the sinners and innocent.

Gluttony: Levels

The villagers Brom and Glutwin for example are never sober, so when entering their minds, you will find yourself inside one of two Gluttony levels, a tavern gone mad!

Gluttony: Boss

The third mind of a villager guilty of the same deadly sin will have you face that deadly sin’s boss.

So, we have two action levels and one boss battle per deadly sin, resulting in three villager’s minds that need to entered for each of the seven deadly sins!

But be warned, you can only access the boss level of a deadly sin once you have cleared the two according action levels first. In which order is entirely up to you.

Innocent villagers

Last but not least, Sinwell is also inhabitant by innocent people. Their minds do not necessarily need to be entered to finish the game (and thus see the two regular endings), but they do contain valuable loot that will aid you on your quest.

However, if you want to see the two true endings, all secrets need to be uncovered. And some of them may as well be buried deep within the minds of innocent villagers…

And don’t forget:

You can try out Saga of Sins yourself right now on the Steam Demo Fest. Enjoy! Will you be brave enough to defeat Hogissimus?

Thank you and please leave a comment,
Your team at Bonus Level Entertainment :)

Dev Diary #6: Sloth, Demo Available Now, Launch Date

First of all, a big thank you to everyone for following our dev diaries and updates! Today is a very special day because... we're launching the Saga of Sins Demo!

That's right, you can have a try on the very first chapter of the game right NOW! Enter the minds of villagers guilty of Gluttony for the very first time and cast out our first boss, the piggish Hogissimus!

Saga of Sins will be released on March 30,2023.

The wait is almost over!

Let's talk about Sloth for now!

The third of the seven deadly sins: Sloth

Sloth is the most deceiving of sins, don’t you agree? What harm could lie in doing nothing? But when you are damned if you act, damned if you don't, what avenue is left but certain damnation? Well, let’s not overcomplete it, a nice dash combo on these zombie devils will make up for being lazy…

The definition of Sloth

Sloth, Acedia in old Latin, is defined as a lack of vitality, a neglect of duties and the failure to do things that one should do. Diligence cures sloth.

Welcome to our Swampyard

The setting for the two Sloth levels and the Sloth boss is muddy swamps, swamps filled with gravestones, bone crushing mills and a forest in the background with treetops resembling the shape of wolves.

And what better enemy could await you here than a freakish maggot, with lanterns on its two heads, shooting slime and melee-attacking with its sickle-shaped claws should you ever dare coming too close!

Boss: Insomnium

The sloth boss on the other hand is, well, guilty of Sloth. It is the mind of the healer Durwin who refuses to help the poor villagers haunted by the plague. So, once you enter his mind you will find yourself inside his own little nightmare.

We hope you like what we came up with for this deadly sin! Thank you for your support and feel free to leave a comment,
Your team at Bonus Level Entertainment :)

Dev Diary #5 : Greed Reveal : The second of the seven deadly sins

In a striking way, Greed may simply be connected to the act of stealing, but it is more than that and not always so easy to detect.

Is Greed not merely the struggle to strive for better? Would you survive the winter, had you not hoarded crops over the summer?

The definition of Gula

Greed, Avaritia in old Latin, is a sin of desire, an artificial, rapacious pursuit of material possessions and hoarding of objects. Charity cures greed.

In Saga of Sins, we decided to portray Greed as catacombs overflowing with a deadly river of gold and waterfalls made of coins. And what enemies could be a better match than bats with a body shaped like a wallet, water devils and, well, gold fish.

Even more, in order to hold up a mirror to yourself we have implemented dark coins that will drain gold from your wallet when picked up! Defeated enemies and special evil chests spawn these dark coins. However, they will not be affected by your coin magnet to make sure you do not pick them up by accident.

As you can see, we mean it and Greed must be purged at all costs!

Boss: Aurundam

Don’t worry, we will not spoil every boss in our dev diaries but know that we are trying to offer as much variety as we possibly can. So, the boss of the deadly sins Greed is, contrary to the Hogissimus of Gluttony, an escape boss: a giant deadly wave of loot that you need to run away from. Enjoy!

Thank you for supporting us and please leave a comment or question,
Your team at Bonus Level Entertainment :)

Dev Diary #4 : The third transformation...The mighty Griffin!

The mighty Griffin

Switch to Griffin

This ancient demon stands for loyalty and trust, but is all the more unforgiving when spotting sinners with its sharp eyes. Were it for this demonic creature's appetite for the human liver, our humble hero Cecil would not even feel that bad having to transform into it when entering the minds of the 31 villagers of Sinwell.

Once again, you can switch between all creatures on the fly and there will be some optional yet rewarding backtracking.

Spread Shot

The Griffin features a spread shot that can be upgraded by donating gold to Madonna statues. Upgraded from two to four projectiles at once! This makes him super powerful for combat. So, make sure to collect lots of treasure chests and perform your Power Dash on multiple enemies, as this will make them drop twice as much gold!

Wall Cling

Only the mighty Griffin can climb special walls covered in vines to reach new heights, discover secrets or outflank enemies.

Gameplay is King

Each of our demonic creatures features a different shot type and skill. The Werewolf has a Revelation Howl that can shatter cracked glass, the Gargoyle’s Ignition can burn obstacles and light braziers to solve riddles and the Griffin uses a Wall Cling.

But what about speed, jump height and velocity?

With the Gargoyle and the Griffin, we have two winged creatures, one rather strong the other rather fragile, does this affect the basic platforming gameplay at all? The simple answer is: no. But for a good reason!

The original plan actually was, that only the winged creatures can perform their Power Dash in midair, while the Werewolf can only do a Power Dash when standing on the ground. Same goes for the double ump.

In our prototype phase however, we found out that these feel rather unintuitive. Same goes for the already implemented and then scrapped different walk speeds, for example to make the Gargoyle feel more like a tank.

At the end a fluid gameplay was more important for us than a forced individuality that sometimes felt inconvenient during combat or platforming…

Thank you for your passion and support,
Your team at Bonus Level Entertainment :)

Dev Diary #3 : Gargoyle Reveal : 2nd transformation!

The fierce Gargoyle

Look up!

Have you ever stood in front of a cathedral, looking up, wondering what on earth these gruesome demons are doping on a scared building like this? Somehow contradictory, right? And thus, perfectly fitting as avatar for Saga of Sins!

In architecture, and specifically Gothic architecture, a Gargoyle is a carved or formed grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing it from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between.” (Wikipedia)

But why did the architects not use the design of angels or saints? Well, because these Gargoyles may also scare and turn away evil influences. Just like our fire-breathing avatar, the second of the four Demonic Creatures you get to play. Once unlocked you can switch between the Werewolf and the Gargoyle on the fly.

Fire Breath

As this fierce demon is known for protecting sacred places from evil powers as well as for water fountains coming out of its mouth on rainy days, what could be more fitting than a flame thrower type of shot? We agree that its range is nothing compared to the Werewolf’s Triple Shot, but it is extremely useful against flying enemies and for powerful melee attacks. The length of the flame can be upgraded and certain objects, such as piles of boxes can be set on fire to clear the path or reach secret areas.

Ignition

Furthermore, special braziers can be set on fire with the Gargoyle’s Fire Breath! There will be different types of braziers, so for example sometimes you will need to light them in the correct order to make a treasure chest appear. Timed braziers, on the other hand, will force you to act swiftly before they go out again.

More to come…

Below you can find some concepts and color variations of our Gargoyle. Two more demonic creatures will be playable and we will reveal the third one rather soon, but what could it be? Feel free to take a guess in the comments below!

Thank you for your interest in Saga of Sins,
Your team at Bonus Level Entertainment :)

Dev Diary #2 : Gluttony Reveal: First of the seven deadly sins!

The Seven Deadly Sins: Gluttony

In order to free your plague infested village, you will need to enter people’s minds to hunt down and fight the seven deadly sins.
As our hero Cecil returns to his home village of Sinwell right after the night of the annual founding festival, it is no surprise that the deadly sin Gluttony has yet stricken again.

In Saga of Sins, each of the seven deadly sins will be featured by two action and one boss level.

The definition of Gula

Gluttony, Gula in old Latin, represents an excessive craving for food, drink or wealth. It is the overconsumption of anything to the point of waste. Temperance cures Gluttony.

As you can see above, Gluttony manifested itself in the minds of the according sinners as a medieval tavern gone wild!
Humans turned into feasting pigs, little devils are swinging on chandeliers dropping toxic liquid and the innkeepers are throwing around barrels of beverages.
The idea of a red devil tormenting a pig by pouring acid in its mouth is actually inspired by the amazing triptych “Last Judgment” by Hieronymus Bosch, that was created around 1485.

Gluttony Assets

Below you can find some of the assets we created to decorate the Gluttony levels.

Meet the Hogissimus

A mad, giant hog with dozens of knives in his back tossing burning barrels at you? Please say “Hail fellow, well met.” to our very first boss in Saga of Sins!

The Hogissimus first attacks from behind a glass wall, which he then shatters with his devastating stomp attack, perfectly fitting to our stained glass art style. But he has even more dirty tricks up his sleeve…

Will you be able to beat the Hogissimus and finally free the sinners of Gluttony?

So, what do you say? Does our crazy tavern meet your expectations? And isn’t Gluttony something that easily befalls each and every one of from time to time? Please leave a comment!

Dev Diary #1 : Werewolf Reveal: Our 1st demonic creature!

Welcome to Saga of Sins

So, this is it, our first “Saga of Sins” dev diary! Can’t believe we made it this far, as the first concept was written back in 2018 when the game was still called Seven Sins. It is definitely our most anticipated game so far; a lot of time and passion went into this and are we are super excited about the positive feedback we are getting and even more grateful for your support!

First of all, don't forget to come and say hi on our booth at Gamescom! We'll be in Hall 10.2 on the Indie Arena Booth on the Bavaria Games Booth!

Demonic Creatures

As you know “Saga of Sins” features four unique demonic creatures, each of them with individual abilities that can be upgraded via a Skill Tree. Once unlocked you can switch between these creatures on the fly and of course there is backtracking too, but it is completely optional. However, if you want to uncover every secret of the game and see all of the four different endings you will need to backtrack and make clever use of your creature’s abilities.

Some skills however are common to any demonic creature, such as the double jump and the merciless Power Dash!

Power Dash

The devastating Power Dash can kill multiple enemies at once. It can be performed in eight directions while standing on the ground or being in midair. But first you will need to fill up your Dash Meter by defeating four enemies! A halo will then indicate that the Power Dash is ready, which is used to shatter your enemies. And the best thing? You will be rewarded with double the amount of gold by killing enemies with your Power Dash!

Beware the Werewolf

Finally, let’s dig deeper into the first demonic creature! The Werewolf is a nocturnal demon of the moon, hiding its true form by day, striking at night with no hope for redemption.
His fierce Triple Shot - that can be upgraded - has long range and fast frequency. His special ability is the Revelation Howl.

Revelation Howl

Howling at the moon trained the Werewolf to create sound at a frequency that can shatter cracked glass, revealing hidden treasure chests. And wouldn’t it be just if you could destroy those deceiving mirrors decorating the “Pride” level, the most shimmering sacrilege of the seven deadly sins?

Please stay tuned!

We hope you enjoyed our first dev diary. Please stay tuned for more and keep supporting us by sharing, liking, wish listing or telling a friend of yours about our passionate indie project.

Thank you so much!
Your Bonus Level Entertainment team :)
