A look at some impressive late-game worlds

Sapiens has been in a private alpha for a while now. During that time, the testers have been busy making many large and detailed builds.

This castle has been built by generations of sapiens over many in-game years.

It's built with mud bricks that have been dug out from the surrounding hills, and mixed with hay and sand and left to dry. The wood is mostly split logs, from birch tree plantations, with some apple wood too for color.

This next village was founded where two rivers meet.

The are no boats in Sapiens yet, but the docks are ready and waiting!

There are some nice green spaces for the sapiens to enjoy within the town walls. This village is in a tropical biome, so it is filled with coconut trees, bamboo, and banana plants.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Hi everyone, I'm majicDave, and this is Sapiens!

Sapiens will be launching into Early Access soon, and you can expect a release date announcement within the next few weeks. With the launch fast approaching, it's time to share more about where the game is at and how development is going.

If you want to get a good overview, the latest devlog video is a great place to start:

Since recording the video, I've added new musical instruments to accompany the flute, a balafon and log drum. It's great when the sapiens get together and play.

Music talent is a personality trait, some sapiens will pick it up faster than others, and some sapiens will actually get sad if they haven't played or heard music lately. But if you assign a few sapiens from your tribe to the music role, then whenever they start to feel the need, they'll go and pick up a musical instrument, find a place by a campfire, and start playing. Then all of the near by sapiens will get a mood boost too.

A new trailer is in the works, which will be published soon, and I've added new weather effects for rain and snow too, which adds a huge amount to the ambience.

I'll be posting more frequent updates from now on, so see you again soon!

Work on Sapiens is progressing nicely, and it's now far enough along that I can show off a full play through of the game as it currently stands.

The focus lately has been on the early-game gameplay and the major underlying systems, but there is still a lot of work to go, loads of content to work on, and improvements to be made.

But hopefully this should help you to see the potential, and understand what playing Sapiens is all about. The game is really starting to come together!

New five years of development video

With the addition of farming, seasons, life cycles, genetics, improved AI, house building, full modding support, chickens, hunting, crafting, and a whole bunch more, 2019 Was a very productive year.

Welcome To Sapiens

Hi! I'm Dave Frampton, the solo developer behind Sapiens.

Now that Sapiens is getting closer to release, I thought it was time to post here on Steam and let you all know where development is at, what to expect, and how you can get involved.

So far, in Sapiens you can:

  • Create and customize the climate and geography of an Earth sized planet
  • Choose and lead a small tribe
  • Give them direction, and watch as they practice to learn the skills you assign
  • Craft simple tools & weapons, build shelter, and place many other objects creating custom structures
  • Hunt chickens, cook over a campfire, gather and store fruits, build beds and sleep through the night
  • Watch as your sapiens age and progress through life, have children and grow old
  • Chop down trees, remove plants, and transform the terrain
  • Create and install extremely flexible game-changing mods using Steam Workshop
  • Play in multiplayer either P2P or via a command line server application

But there is still a lot to do. The release date goal is late 2020, but it may still be pushed a little later than that.
My main goals for Sapiens before release include:

  • Interactions between tribes. Trade and combat, as well as the ability to recruit or capture sapiens from other tribes.
  • A much more advanced tech tree, allowing your sapiens to progress through the medieval age and beyond.
  • A farming system, with the ability to plant fields of crops, as well as forests, ornamental plants and trees, and domesticated animals
  • More content generally, with a lot more variety in building types, animals and plants.

Sapiens will not be going into early access, but instead will have a small closed alpha throughout 2020, before a full 1.0 release some time after that.

The best way to keep an eye on development is to subscribe to my YouTube Channel and watch the regular devlog videos.
