## [Early Access Release] -- 2023-02-07

Notable changes:

  • Scorchlands is now available on Linux & SteamOS.
  • HUD was heavily reworked in order to take up a lesser part of the screen.
  • Introduced a system that visually shows the player how the resource production balance changes when performing various activities. This is done through spawning animated resource icons.
  • Added localization for 3 languages: German, French, Chinese and Russian.
  • Added the “Core” mod that serves as an example and instruction on how to create mods for Scorchlands. It contains all of the stuff available in the base game.

UI changes:

  • Colony production is now displayed at the top of the screen.
  • Global resources display has been combined with tabs located in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Added option to collapse various global production types.
  • When building or inspecting a resource-producing building, colony production UI now highlights icons of resources that are related, with extra emphasis on any missing resources.
  • Missing resources in colony production UI are now represented by black color on their respective bars (previously they were marked red).
  • Whenever placing buildings, icons of newly produced and consumed resources will appear on the screen to better show the player what is changing in the colony production-wise.
  • UI present previously when placing and relocating buildings was removed
  • Info panel present at the bottom-left corner was reduced to a simple bar displaying the currently hovered object name and icon.
  • Minimap has been relocated to the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Changes:

  • Added a custom cursor when hovering over clickable UI elements.
  • Added a version displaying text in the main menu.
  • Added a new sound played whenever the player progresses in a mission.
  • Added bubble particles for Alchemist.
  • Fixed several minor bugs with combat UI.
  • Fixed players being able to upgrade their colony radius if there were enemies present at the borders.
  • Fixed buttons sticking out in the warning panel when upgrading the colony radius.
  • Fixed several minor in-game text issues.
  • Fixed a rare hard lock when rotating a laser while configuring it.
  • Restored missing rock meshes in the desert biome & missing pebbles in Grassy and Cliff biomes.
  • Extra notes:
  • The photo mode that we previously mentioned has been delayed a bit, but should be introduced in an update soon to come along with some other cool stuff.

That’s all for today - but we know that’s a LOT! 💪 Phew!

Gameplay Insight #4 - Tech Tree 🌳, the Altars System 🕯️ & mod support 🔧

Hello, birdfolks! 👋

How are you doing? We just released the Reveal Date Trailer (Early Access). 📺
In case you didn’t watch it, here it is:

Today, it’s time to continue our Gameplay Insight series. This is the 4th issue of it! 🎒 We’ll visit three (tree? 🤔) places.

📡 Tech Tree 🌳

Let’s take a quick look at the technology tree. It’s quite sprawling, but what we like about it is that you don’t wait for your technology to be researched. You choose it - you get it. Here’s a screen from the trailer we posted a few lines above.

This immediacy is in line with the core idea of Scorchlands, which is playing at your own pace. ♟️

Whenever you make a decision, the game reacts instantly. You don't wait for a production bar to reach its end, or for resources to be slowly, arduously gathered. It's more about thinking about your next move and making it than about going through the motions in order to see it happen. The pacing depends on you alone.

🐦 The Altars System 🕯️

Like in every city-builder, the buildings you place matter a lot. In Scorchlands, some buildings can influence others.

To create some resources you need to do something more than just provide enough materials or place appropriate buildings. Meet the altars – special buildings influencing other production buildings within their reach. You will need different combinations of altars to create different resources.

There are three types of altars and each has a unique shape of its influence scope. These shapes are not random. They will be easy to use in most cases but if you have limited space in your colony and you don’t want to waste it, or if you want to produce several resources at once, you’ll certainly have to experiment a bit.

🧰 A few words about mod support 🔧

Let us put it this way.

Yes, Scorchlands will have mod support from the very beginning – right at the start of Early Access! This is great news for folks that want more stuff or wish to spice up their vanilla game a bit.
Our goal is to make all of the content present in the game with the exception of the core mechanics, moddable. We know that your imagination is boundless and we want to let you go wild with your creations!

👉 Modders will be able to modify and add new types of terrain, biomes, buildings, technologies, and units. New language versions of the base game and mod localisation can be added to both the already existing and the newly introduced content. 👀

Of course, we know that at the beginning the mod support won’t be flawless and modders will encounter bugs. However, we can assure you that all will be patched and improved with time. Our team is focused on constantly tweaking things in the game’s EA build.
We can’t wait to see what you’ll cook up! 👨‍🍳

Before you’ll start „making” your own version of our game…

Before we leave you, take a look at…

Quick Game Overview

Scorchlands is a game in which you manage the production of fantastic resources on a foreign, volcanic planet.

You will fill the shoes of a birdfolk space expedition leader in charge of an effort to colonize a volcanic moon.

Starting with just one tiny settlement, expand into a vast network of interdependent colonies.
Scale up your production, manage logistics, adapt to the terrain, and master new resources.
Explore this unwelcoming, alien world and reshape it through arcane terraformation.

Features

  • Experience a unique mix between a city builder and a factory game.
  • Terraform the world around you and exploit the biomes you create.
  • Play around with a unique system of resource management.
  • Manage laser-based logistic networks.
  • Come up with your creative solutions and find yourself pausing to admire your work.
  • Never wait for any timer and play as fast or as slow as you want.
  • Follow a lighthearted story about a race of birdfolk on a scientific expedition.

Gameplay Insight #3: Terraforming, biomes & resource management 🏗️

Hello, Folks! 👋
We all that Giwis live the rule “can’t stop | won’t stop” and they’re constantly running from one place to another. In this issue of Gameplay Insight, we’ll take on a journey with three stops ahead of us. There’s a lot that needs to be told – put on your running gear and let’s get started! 🏃‍♂️

🚏 Stop no. 1:

Terraforming

In Scorchlands, you reshape the terrain instantly, and anywhere you want. Moreover, later you can relocate the biomes you've made at a whim and any time! You get total control over the terrain you build your cities on. Feel free to do whatever you feel like doing. 🤝

It’s good to think strategically when terraforming. Clever placement of biomes lets you benefit more from their characteristics. We wrote a lot about the bonuses in the second Gameplay Insight – you’ll find it 👉 here.

Let’s get straight to the point - as you develop your civilization, you can progress through multiple biomes, each with different advantages.

We wanted to make sure that instant terraforming remains fun and special regardless of how many times you do it. To accomplish this, we took a lot of effort to visually represent the process in an awe-inspiring way. Our team decided to choose a pastel color palette 🎨 to play a key role in the graphic design of Scorchlands. The sound plays a big part, too - when you hear the earth crumbling like it’s ready to rearrange itself, you know you’re dealing with a powerful and mysterious force.

We hope you’ll enjoy changing the landscape and making it your own. Time for the second stop! ✋

🚏 Stop no. 2:

Biomes

Everytime you start your game on a volcanic planet, the terrain surrounding you at the beginning of your journey is a wasteland of scorched land and lava 🔥. Besides this first biome, there are three more you can create later in your game. Just a reminder - each biome introduces a new set of resources, technologies, and a new type of combat equipment.

The placing of a new biome you want to create shouldn’t be random – look for the spot which will produce the best resource veins.

What’s more, you need to plan for the future of your colonies – you would want to place a biome to make the resource transportation much easier rather than more difficult. Keep in mind the already existing terrain. If your new biome overlaps with the one already there, it might destroy the old landscape.

Each new biome introduces a couple of new twists to the city building. You will have to plan around the shape of resource veins, the terrain itself, establish logistic connections between colonies in other biomes and master the production of newly unlocked types of products and finally scale up your infrastructure.

Creating new biomes is essential for gathering new resources and expanding your colony but it’s also fun to see how much you can transform a volcanic 🌋 wasteland!

We always have a lot of fun constantly reshaping the hexagons around our colonies – hope you like terraforming the biomes too! Adjust your laces, it’s time for…

🚏 Stop no. 3:

Resource management

To which our game has quite a unique approach. 👀

In Scorchlands, the standard gradual resource production was replaced with a supply and demand system. By producing resources, you simply increase its local availability. Whenever you use up a resource, its demand is increased. Resource deficits can limit the effectiveness of dependent production chains and having a surplus of production means that the resource can still be used for more stuff. 📈

The most interesting aspect of this system is that the player receives instant feedback for every action performed. You can see the changes in resource availability right away and don’t need to wait for anything to be produced.

This also eliminates other forms of waiting. For example, your technological advancement is achieved by continuously scaling up your empire and expanding your production. Any new technology discovered will increase the demand for the required resources. The same stands true whenever creating new biomes or making equipment for your combatants.

The final noteworthy advantage to having no resource storage in Scorchlands is the fact that it reduces the player's mental load. Apart from much faster and smoother gameplay, it lets you focus on other features focused on the supply and demand system that you can't usually find in other city builders or similar games.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1090100/Scorchlands/

This is the last stop. 🚏
See you around!

Keep calm and get ready for Gameplay Insight #4! 🍿
Developers from Ringlab ⚗️

Gameplay Insight #2: The Bonus System 🐣

Hello, Folks! 👋

It’s time to change the gear ⚙️ with publishing new announcements on Steam. Today, we’ll focus on the bonus system that allows the player to make the most out of the colony. But first: check out this photo 📸 of bird colonists just hanging around in the city. We hope that you can feel the heartbeat of the colony! For us, it’s the little details that matter.

They're not only making the place feel more alive, but also add some extra weight to your actions - structures you build are inhabited, and your decisions impact not only just numbers, but also your Giwis. Let’s leave them now, we’re sure they’re having a great time. 🥳

This time we want to show you our bonus system. Let’s get straight to it! 💥

In one of the previous posts, we explained that building placement is very important in Scorchlands. There are many reasons for this, such as limited space, resource management, etc. Thinking about your surroundings plays a key role here, but there’s also another important reason.

Each production building has its own set of rules specifying the set of conditions where it works at full capacity.

Planning out your colony layout is just as much about production management, as it is about maximizing the performance of each individual building. 🗼

Some bonuses can be quite straightforward. How is that? Let us provide some examples: raw resource producers need to be placed next to their desired resource veins, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Liquid extractors should be placed on the shorelines, which are limited and hard to claim in a single colony. Mineshafts work faster when placed one next to another, however, they still need some unobstructed space to mine. Gatherers need a lot of free land, but with a big area, a few other buildings nearby won't hinder them that much.

Buildings that do process complex resources also behave in their own ways. Crafters work best next to raw extraction buildings. Artificer gets boosted by processing buildings, Alchemist profits from Farms and science buildings, etc. Think about your possibilities and the connections you're about to make in your colonies.

There is no limit on bonuses that one tile can provide.

If you find a very rare, but very small resource vein, you can still build and organize a whole colony around it, and use it to the fullest. Thanks to all of this, planning a colony organically turns into an interesting puzzle 🧩. It will never be the same – each colony will differ from one another depending on the available resource veins, resources available or buildings placed.

Dear birdfoks 🐦, that’s all for today. Yes, yes – we know that there's a lot of information above, so keep calm, take your time to fully assimilate the knowledge from this Gameplay Insight.
Until next time my friends!

Star Drifters recap #2 🚀

Hello everyone! 👋

The year 2022 is now a melody of the past.
We would like to thank all of you guys for supporting us since day one! 🙏

Without further ado - let’s check out what happened in our camp during the second half of ‘22. Let’s go! 🏃‍♂️

⚒️ First Dwarf (...and some gaming events here and there! 🎮)

In case you missed it - First Dwarf is our upcoming Action RPG set in the world of Driftland. That’s why you can read about it on Driftland: The Magic Revival Steam card.

You’ll be able to pet a good boi in the game. Mhm. That’s right! 🐕

Now, let’s talk about the asymmetrical co-op 🐉 that we’re implementing in First Dwarf.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 In co-op, players will be able to take control over the mech or one of its pilots: Tru or Ragna. Each of them has its own, separate skills to develop and upgrade. All characters have their strengths and weaknesses so it’s important to choose the characters wisely when preparing to complete certain tasks.

🧑‍ In a single-player game, the player can switch between characters, completing tasks with the one with better skills in a given field. Tru, Ragna, and the Mech will have different skill trees. Tru will be a better Mecha pilot, Ragna can e.g. fly, and the Mech can be treated as a kind of armored vehicle, so without a pilot it will not work.

It’s important to say that implementing the asymmetrical co-op would not be possible without the Game Prototype Design Competition 2022 in which we were awarded! 🏆

The competition mentioned above helped us create some new mechanics for First Dwarf. Those mechanics evolved into a full-fledged, asymmetrical co-op mode of the game, which we implemented in its build! Once again, thank you to the co-organizers of the competition: Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland, Centrum GovTech Poland, and CRPK, as well as Copernicus Game Jam 2022 - during which the diplomas 📜 were handed over and everyone who supported us along the way.

We showed our upcoming action RPG at many gaming 🎮 events, both digital and held in “real” places. Just to name a few:
- PAX West;
- Poznań Games Arena (PGA);
- Indie Cade;
- DreamHack Beyond Indie Showcase;
- MIX Next 2022;
- Dev.Play;
- #PitchYaGame.

It’s time to focus on 3️⃣ of them.

🚏 First stop - PAX West.

Lots of you came to our booth to check out an early build of our game. Thank you for that! See you next year! 🤜🤛

Your reactions surpassed our expectations, and the feedback provided will certainly influence the further development of the game, already at this stage. It was 4 days full of interesting conversations, laughter and a unique atmosphere created by countless players, cosplayers, journalists, or industry representatives.🤝

🚏 Second stop - Poznań Games Arena (PGA).

In Poznań, we were showing First Dwarf, Scorchlands, Brewpub Simulator, and Lumencraft. PGA was such a blast! We felt your enjoyment brought to your faces by our upcoming games. Just look at Kuba, one of the members of our team - his smile does not lie 😊

🚏 The last stop - Dev.Play.

It’s a yearly celebration of indie games and their developers. Game creators from all over the world come to Bucharest to present their titles and experiences. The event ended with an award gala. First Dwarf received 3 awards: Best Game of the Show, Best Visuals, and Most Popular Game. 🏆 Thank y’all! 🙏

To wrap up the First Dwarf chapter of this recap we want to write about the key role of our IGN - Exclusive Announcement Trailer posted on IGN’s YouTube channel was viewed more than 285k times. There are also more than 5.4k thumbs up 👍 under the video! 📺

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1714900/First_Dwarf/

🐦 Scorchlands

Who won’t fall in love with birdlike Giwis, running around through the hexes? The game’s a wholesome and adorable city builder.

Play the demo version - is available for free here, on Steam!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1090100/Scorchlands/

At this point, we can say that developers from Ringlab ⚗️ are aiming for publishing more Steam News about in-game mechanics. When we’re writing these words, three of them are available as we speak: How the protagonist Giwi hatched, How to build your colony, and Gameplay Insight #1: Summoning the Nexus.

Stay tuned ! More of them will be published during January and February of 2023.

Also, the game received a warm welcome during #TurnBasedFest 2022! 😎

🕷️ Lumencraft

The full release of this unique mix of a top-down shooter with base building and roguelike mechanisms is just around the corner! Nonetheless, we’re not spoiling the release date at the moment. That’s not the only great news - something big is coming to the game. We bet you weren’t expecting this. Jump on the hype train, but stay calm. For now, let’s go down. Together. ⏬

The developers from 2Dynamic Games are constantly tweaking and upgrading the game’s build. You can help them by completing the survey they made - we’ll be very grateful for the feedback! It’s called Discord 🎧 survey, because the game’s community was the first one to answer the questions mentioned in it.

👉 Link to Lumencraft survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSckMJ-2HMumj5rPd_i2Up0bxT3CRyQvZzWpmKmvBQTfKDTLNg/viewform

One of the most important moments during the Early Access of Lumencraft was taking a different approach to the game's build. The experimental update published a few months ago left the beta stage. It's now living its new life - the developers called it Giga Update.

Lumencraft is reshaping every once in a while - two bigger updates and one smaller update were released since the release of Giga Update. There’s a lot of fresh content in the game - you should play it now, especially if you spent some time with Lumencraft a few months ago. It truly is worth revisiting! 🔁

🍻 Brewpub Simulator

There was a first, official playtest of the game - we’re glad how many of you decided to check out what it’s like to run a virtual pub and brew some virtual ale! A playable build of the game was presented to European audiences for the first time during PGA 2022. Thanks for playing it, we know what works and what needs some tweaking here and there! 🍺

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1755180/Brewpub_Simulator/

🏢 Danger Scavenger

Our skyscraper roguelite shooter is out now on Epic Games Store! 🎉

Just a reminder - Danger Scavenger is available on PC, PS4, XONE, Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS, and XSX. It’s also a Steam Deck verified game - give it a try on one of the handhelds, and you’ll fall in love with this fast-paced gunslinger action!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1169740/Danger_Scavenger/

This is not the last word we said speaking about publishing our games’ catalog on Epic Games Store - more titles will follow soon. At this point, you can wishlist First Dwarf ⚒️ and Scorchlands 🐦 on this platform!

That’s all for today.
Great things are here, but also great things are yet to come.
2023 will be ours!

Don’t forget to support IndieDev! 🕹️

Much love,
Star Drifters 🚀

The playtest is here! 🎉

Hello everyone! 👋

🎵 Today’s the day we were waiting for.
We can’t wait for the start to run even more.
Let’s expand the colony and get to the point.
We know that this playtest won’t disappoint! (...you.) 🎵

Do not judge us, not every Giwi is a proper singer. 🤫

Now we can finally invite all of you.
...

Welcome to Scorchlands playtest! 🎉

Play the game for 5 days and see what changed. We were tweaking the playtest build for many days and now we’re handing it to you.

Also, we’re part of #TurnBasedFest 2022, that’s happening simultaneously to the playtest.

Here’s the link: https://turnbasedfest.com/ 👈 see the schedule to not miss any great livestreams!

Scorchalnds is a game in which you manage production of fantastic resources on a foreign, volcanic planet.

You will fill the shoes of a birdfolk space expedition leader in charge of an effort to colonize a volcanic moon.

Starting with just one tiny settlement, expand into a vast network of interdependent colonies.
Scale up your production, manage logistics, adapt to the terrain and master new resources.
Explore this unwelcoming, alien world and reshape it through arcane terraformation.
