Gameplay Guides - Issue #13: Keeping Track of Information in Battle

There’s a lot of information available to you when you’re in battle, and knowing where to look for it can sometimes be the difference between victory and defeat!

You can always look at what remains in your Draw Pile. Keep in mind that the cards will not be in order unless you have a certain Relic that gives you that advantage.

Similarly, you can see what’s in your Discard Pile. Again, they won’t be in order.

You can even see what’s in your Burn Pile if you have one!

If you want to see your full deck all at once, you can find that on the top right corner. This is available to you even when you’re off the battlefield and exploring the map!

Speaking of the map, you can see that even when you’re in the middle of taking down Warhounds or some other deadly beast. This is nice in case you want to decide how soon after a fight you might get to heal in case you want to make some strategic decisions about your gameplay.

You can also see details about your Relics at any time by mousing over them. This helps you strategize during fights without the need to memorize each symbol, and can help you make decisions when in events or at the shop.

One extremely useful bit of information is your Champions’ passive abilities (accessible at any time by simply mousing over their portrait) and their buffs and afflictions. The symbols you see under their health and around their portraits here indicate what effects are currently applied to them, but mousing over them also gives you details on those traits.

This isn’t just for Champions, though! Mousing over enemies will also inform you of any passive abilities you need to keep an eye out for. Similarly, their afflictions and buffs will appear near their portrait.

Keeping track of your enemies’ abilities, strengths, and weaknesses can be the difference between a successful battle or frustrating defeat.

Gameplay Guides - Issue #12: Making Use of the Card Rack

The Card Rack is one of Sigil’s unique features that really acts as a game changer! It’s very frustrating depending on that singular, perfect card draw that will get you out of a sticky situation, right? We’ve all topdecked the exact thing we’ve needed once or twice in our lives, but the reason that is so memorable is because it almost never happens.

But that’s where the Card Rack comes in!

To place a card in the Card Rack, you must pay its mana cost. This does not count as playing the card, so any effects that take place upon play (such as Burn effects) do not trigger.

Once a card is in the rack, it is inaccessible for the rest of the turn in which it was placed there.

But from the next turn onward, not only is it playable, but it’s free.

Well, ok, not free, I guess since you already paid for it, but the point is that you don’t have to pay for it again, and that means that you can stack up some really amazing combos or keep an ace in the hole for just the right moment, as you can use up your mana playing the cards in your hand and still continue to play any and every card in your Card Rack if the mood suits you.

There are also some great Relics and cards and even Champions that benefit from Card Rack usage, so keep an eye out and discover them as you play!

Gameplay Guides - Issue #11: How to Use the Environment to Your Advantage

We already wrote about the different character effects twice, but now you can learn how you can engage with some of those same effects—whether it’s on your or your enemies—by taking advantage of the battlefield’s environmental features. No spells needed!

Bushes (Armor)

Bushes are a great boon to you and enemies alike! Standing in a bush gives a character extra protection, granting them 4 armor at the end of their turn.

Puddles (Vulnerable)

Where bushes give a boost, puddles go in the other direction—while standing in one, a character is afflicted with Vulnerable! This means they will take 50% more damage! This only applies while a character is actively standing in the puddle, so it’s important to avoid ending your turn with your feet wet. Luring an enemy into a puddle, however, can have some exciting results for your Champions aiming to take them down.

Spike Switches (Damage)

A well laid trap can make all the difference! These Spike Switches are a great way to damage any enemy who approaches you in the spiked square. However, be sure you don’t activate the switch when standing on the spikes yourself, and beware of enemies moving through the area and activating switches as well! It’s best not to move through activated spikes if you can help it, and ending your turn on spikes that are switch activated is really asking for trouble.

Runes (Immunity)

Standing on Runes will grant your Champions and their enemies Immunity. Remaining on the tile will make this effect continue to stack!

Mushrooms (Poison)

These cute little mushrooms pack a deadly punch. Any character who even passes through them will be afflicted with Poison, and multiple passes mean multiple stacks of this damaging debuff.

Obstacles

Ok, obstacles don’t afflict with anything, but they’re a useful environmental feature to take advantage of. They help you get a character out of range of an enemy or be used strategically to corner a bad guy so you can burn him down. Don’t overlook these useful features as you’re mapping out your formation and considering your attack strategy!

Gameplay Guides - Issue #10: Character Effects Explained (Advanced)

We already went over several effects that can affect your Champions or their enemies, but here are a few more to familiarize yourself with that are a little trickier to work with:

Poison

Poison damages a character equal to its stack at the start of their turn. Not only does Poison stack—it sticks around. The Poison stacked on a character will only decay by 1 each turn. That means if there is 5 poison on one of your Champions, they’ll take 5 damage at the start of your turn. The next turn, assuming no more poison was added onto the stack, it will decay by 1 and the Champion will be damaged by 4 next turn, then 3 and so on until all the poison has decayed off of them.

Immunity

Immunity is also stackable and sticks around, but unlike Poison, it doesn’t decay. The way to knock of Immunity stacks is to be hit with something Immunity protects from.

For instance, if an enemy has 2 Immunity stacks and you hit them with an ability that afflicts with Vulnerable, they will not become Vulnerable, but they will lose 1 Immunity stack. You have to knock off all the stacks before they can be afflicted with anything. This works for your Champions as well!

Mark

Marks are powerful, stackable additional damage indicators that can be inflicted on enemies for the current turn. Once an enemy has been Marked, each time they are attacked that turn, they will take additional damage equal to the number of marks they have.

Thorns

Thorns are a stackable element that can be applied to your Champion and damage enemies that hit you equal to the amount of Thorns that Champion has at the time.

Spikes

Spikes work best for those players who like to use their health as a resource rather than protecting it indiscriminately. Spikes act similarly to Thorns in that they’re stackable and can be applied to your Champion, but they work with a twist: Spikes give your Champion Thorns equal in number to their Spikes each time your Champion takes damage in that turn. Played just right, that can really start to add up!

Gameplay Guides - Issue #9: Character Effects Explained (The Basics)

Armor

Armor is something that protects your Champions and their enemies. Until the armor on a character is destroyed, they won’t take damage to their health. Be aware, however, that armor only lasts for the turn it is applied. This doesn’t work in your favor when considering armor placed on your Champions, but it is helpful to keep in mind when an enemy has a huge pile of armor protecting them. Sometimes it’s best to hold off on using your attacks until they’ll actually hurt their health total; you just have to wait until the next turn when that armor melts away.

Provoke

We wrote before about how to tell which Champions your enemies will prioritize attacking [insert link to that post]. Well, Provoke will throw all that out the window. When you Provoke an enemy, it forces them to prioritize the Champion who Provoked them!

There’s one caveat, however. If they cannot reach the Champion who provoked them for some reason, they will go for another of your Champions instead.

Cripple

If a character is inflicted with Crippled, that means their movement is restricted only to one tile. This effect only lasts one turn unless it’s reapplied, but even one turn with such limited movement can be a huge hindrance!

Vulnerable

If a character is Vulnerable, it means they will receive 50% more damage from attacks. This affliction also only lasts one turn, but it can be absolutely devastating if applied at the beginning of a sequence of attacks.

Weak

Weak lasts only for one turn, but it really takes the bite out of a character’s attacks. It reduces damage done by that character’s attacks by a third, making them frustratingly weak (if they’re one of your Champions) or gloriously ineffective (if it’s one of your enemies).

Knockback

Ok, so Knockback is more of an ability than an effect, but it’s a pretty handy way to hurt a bad guy (or for a bad guy to hurt you)!

A character using a Knockback ability will move their victim a set number of squares in a single direction as well as do whatever damage goes along with that ability. However, if the victim hits any obstruction—including another character—they will receive an extra 5 damage. (If they hit a character, it also harms that other character!)
