Hallo from Skate City, Oslo

Welcome back to our world tour series, where we take you to some of street skating's most iconic spots and share why they inspired us for Skate City.

Today we're visiting Oslo; a city whose relationship to skateboarding was born out of gritty determination in the face of prohibition. Who deserves more skate cred than a city that forged a culture despite facing an eleven-year skateboarding ban?

In 1978, Norway declared that skateboarding would be illegal with the exception of one skatepark in Oslo which would require skaters to own a club pass to access.

While this exclusivity formed a tight-knit community among the Oslo skaters, those outside of the city created their own special bonds over self-made skate spots hidden from the eye of the law. While Norway experienced a drought of all things skateboarding during these years, the rest of the world pushed boundaries with their boards and continued to evolve the culture.

When the ban lifted in 1989, it inspired the rise of skate shops and parks all over Norway that quickly made up for lost time. Ironically enough, the skater-friendly architecture of City Hall made it such a hot spot that we chose this as the opening location for the Oslo level.

Oslo’s history has helped establish a passion and appreciation for the sport within the city that’s earned it a spot in the hearts of skaters— including members of the team from Agens (of the Skate City team), who call this city home.

Thanks for joining us for the second stop of the Skate City world tour.

Have you ever skated the streets of Oslo? What would you do in the face of a nation-wide skateboarding ban? 👀 Head to the #skate-city channel of our Discord server and let us know: discord.gg/snowman.

We'll be back soon with the final destination of our journey.

Until then!

Take a trip to LA with Skate City

Skate City takes you on a world tour as you ride through some of street skating’s most iconic spots. We'd like to take you on a trip through these, tell you a little about their history, and why we were inspired to include them in the game.

The first destination on your journey is the place where it all began. Los Angeles, which features famous skate locations such as the Carlsbad gap, Venice Beach, LA High, The Stage at Santa Monica Courthouse, and more.

As you cruise past palm trees and beachside sunsets, you’ll soak up the feel-good vibes that these sun-drenched California landmarks are known for.

LA's rich history as a skateboarding hub began as early as the 1950s when surfers in California discovered they could create smaller boards with wheels that would allow them to surf on the sidewalks. By the 1970s, one particular group of surfers, the Zephyr team, brought skateboarding to the forefront of the scene with their expressive styles and unique manoeuvres that blended what they had learned from surfing with what was possible in an urban space.

These pioneers stepped outside the comfort zone of their time, infusing skateboarding with a new style and attitude that would shape the sport’s progression for years to come.

Whether or not you grew up watching legends hit the spots represented in Skate City, you’ll feel the spirit of Los Angeles, past and present, as you roll through them in the game.

Thanks for joining us on the first stop of Skate City's world tour. We'll be back soon to guide you to the next stop.

What type of skating game is Skate City?

Skateboarding games have been rising in popularity over recent years and between arcade-style skate games and those of the simulation genre, you might be wondering where Skate City fits in.

It's obvious from its 2.5D visuals and side-scrolling perspective that Skate City is quite different. It mixes a unique perspective with real-world visuals and relaxing, quick-to-learn controls.

Skate City is real-world inspired. Our levels are based on real cities, and we've taken inspiration from real-world obstacles and skate spots. We wanted the game to get as close as it could to feeling like real skating.

The side-scrolling perspective is relaxing—it keeps you on-course and frees you to focus on mastering tricks and stringing together lines. And there are a SLEW of tricks to master, including flip tricks, grabs, grinds, spins, and manuals.

This streamlined approach results in a game that captures the meditative feel of street skating. Skate City's focus is on recreating what street skating feels like, taking you back to the joy of bombing down the streets with your mates as a teenager, on a sunlit afternoon.

We can't wait to see what you make of our unique, chill approach to crafting a skateboarding game. Head over to our Discord community and share which tricks you're looking forward to mastering: discord.gg/snowman.

The Origins of Skate City

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your support since our announcement last week. We appreciate each person who’s been riding with us and we can’t wait to bring Skate City to Steam. Skateboarding is a sport close to our hearts and today we would like to share a little about this background and the development of Skate City.

For Snowman founders Ryan Cash and Jordan Rosenberg, skateboarding was a big part of their childhood. In fact, Ryan and Jordan have been friends since they were kids, and their love of skateboarding began while they were living across the street from one another.

As Ryan explains:

"We started skateboarding, I don’t know, when we were probably 10-years-old or so. We were huge into it. We would go outside of my house and wax our curb and borrow my dad’s Sony camcorder for home footage. [...] We skateboarded every free minute we [had] and [watched] some of the old school skate videos like Misled Youth, for example. When Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater came out, Jordan and I would play that all day long. We’d have sleepovers and be up until like six in the morning."

Although he didn't grow up on the same street as Ryan and Jordan, the team's Producer, Andrew Schimmel, also fell in love with skating at a young age:

"That was all my friends and I were concerned about — as soon as you get out at recess you grab your board. At lunch, after school, we tried to be learning new tricks every day and we kind of fell in love with that zone you fall into when you’re out in the city and you’re exploring and trying to push yourself to learn a new skill. The second you land a new trick, that’s such a rewarding feeling. So we wanted to capture some of that in the game."

But how did this childhood interest lead to a collaboration between Oslo-based development team, Agens, and Toronto-based Snowman?

The project was initiated by Daniel Zeller from Agens. While working on a very early version of the game, Daniel reached out to Ryan to ask some questions about the shaders being used in *Alto's Adventure*. As Ryan explains, this exchange was the spark that began the collaboration:

"I talked to our team and answered his [Daniel's] question and then kind of kept this conversation going [...] this lightbulb went off where I was like, "Maybe we can help you make this game a little bit better with any of our expertise and the things we learned making *Alto’s Adventure*, and then also help you guys market it and things like that." ...The fact that we’d always wanted to make a skate game, and that if we had gone down the route of making a skate game, we would have wanted to do something that very much focuses on the art of skateboarding rather than the olympic or extreme sport side of things [made it a natural fit]. So I floated that out as an idea and they were really stoked on that, so we kind of continued that conversation and that ended up leading to us deciding to team up and work on the game together."

A few years, and a lot of hard work later, you've got Skate City.

These quotes are from an excellent interview conducted by Blake Hester with Ryan and Andrew. You can check out the full article on Polygon: https://www.polygon.com/features/2018/12/31/18150672/skate-city-mobile-game-snowman-altos-adventure
