Slava Ukraini!

Minor update, June 23rd

Feature updates

  • Night missions added
  • A couple of new maps added
  • A few more weapons added (including a flare launcher for illumination)

Bugfixes

  • Most reported bugs have been fixed (hope I got them all)

70,000 users

Slava Ukraini! is now officially up to 70,000 users.

Download statistics remain about the same, with 32.6% of the downloads made from Ukraine, 8.8% from the US and 8.1% from Poland.

News from the war are mainly focused on the Russian attempt to encircle Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in the east, where it appears they've gained some ground. Our thoughts go to the brave soldiers on the frontlines fighting to hold the Russian advances back.

A Google search for "NBU special account" will get you the link to the special account set up by the National Bank of Ukraine in support of the armed forces. Making a donation is simple and secure and every single cent counts, so please consider doing so. As always, make sure you verify the authenticity of the recipient before you make a donation.

60,000 users

Today, Slava Ukraini! hit the 60,000 users mark. Most game downloads (34%) are in Ukraine, with the US (8.5%) and Poland (7.7%) second and third. Somewhat unexpected, the fourth most common download location is China, with 5.7% of the downloads made from there. On top of that, there are 27 individual downloads from the Russian Federation (even though the game is not available on the Steam store in Russia, so I don't really know how that works). As anyone paying attention to the exact wording above may have noticed, there is a difference between users and downloads, but Steam doesn't detail the registered location of the users, just from where the downloads are made. A single user may download the game multiple times - or not at all - so the statistics are not always easily interpreted and I can't say how many users are actually in Russia for example.

As I've said previously, the interest in the game has been very much higher than I had ever expected and if I'd known that I probably wouldn't have been very comfortable in releasing it in tha state that it was - and in many respects still is.

With a large user base, no bugs will remain undetected and I've had to spend more time than I'd hoped to resolve both bugs and logical issues. I'll continue to do so and on top of that try to squeeze in some time do expand and improve the actual content and game modes.

Anyway, thanks for all the encouraging feedback, even though the game is very raw. It does get under my skin sometimes when people write reviews complaining about the graphics or the lack of smooth and diversified game modes, even though on the logical level I know they're comparing it to high quality games from professional gaming studios - which a single hobby dev like myself cannot ever compete with.

Meanwhile, the war is still going on and on the eastern front Ukrainian forces are being hard pressed by the Russian invaders. Brave Ukrainian men and women are fighting for their country, their freedom and their right to be a part of the European community. Some of them are making the ultimate sacrifice, but their resolve remains unbroken.

Minor update, June 10th

This patch is mostly about fixing bugs that have been reported.

Feature updates

  • Total casualties for the battles fought in battle mode are now diplayed in strategic mode.

Bugfixes

  • Accidental firing when a mission starts should not happen again. There's now a 3-second delay as a mission starts before weapons safeties come off. But never put a finger on the trigger unless you're prepared to actually fire your weapon. ;)
  • BTGs getting stuck in combat mode after being attacked twice in succession should now be fixed.
  • The AK-105 accidentally had the reloading sound instead of the shot sound. Fixed.

Minor update, June 8th

I had to release this patch early to deal with the fact that the first achievements became visible through Steam even before they were obtainable. But since I don't do fully modular updates, some of the other stuff I've been working on goes with it as well.

Feature updates

  • AK-105 added
  • AK-105 with red dot sight added
  • RPG-7 added
  • Zoom levels somewhat reduced for the older/basic weapons (like the AK-74). The larger zoom levels should be reserved for future (more modern) weapons as they are added.
  • Preference setting to enable/disable zoom added (for those who want a challenge)
  • 4 achievements added/fixed (previously made visible prematurely my mistake)
  • One more defense mission added (featuring Russian artillery shelling)
  • AI slightly improved (they won't shoot friendlies quite as often - though it can (and should) still happen occasionally

Bugfixes

  • Enemy moving/seeing/shooting through certain houses fixed
  • Reloading while switching weapon bug fixed
  • A few other minor details that have been fixed on the fly

Slava Ukraini! reached 50,000 users

Today, just over two weeks since release, Slava Ukraini! passed 50,000 users. I really did not see that coming.

When I released Slava Ukraini!, I expected that it would perhaps reach somewhere between 1,000-2,000 users in total, accumulated over several months. That particular expectation was put to shame just a few hours after release and since then, the number of users has been steadily increasing.

It's true that a lot of people probably don't spend hours playing the game, which is to be expected since after all it's a very simple game and it still lacks a lot of content. But anyone who launches it will at least see the plea to make a donation to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is what made me create it in the first place.

The sheer number of users does put some pressure on me to add content and improvements as well as quickly fixing any bugs, spelling mistakes or inconsistencies in the game - and I will do my best to meet the demands.

I am, however, just a single person working on the game in my free time, so there's a hard limit to how much I can do and how quickliy I can do it. Therefore, I would like to ask the community of players on Steam if there's anyone out there who would like to give me a hand in the continuing development of the game.

There are literally hundereds of different things that need doing, ranging from community moderation, through graphic design, texturing, animation, 3D-modelling, coding, image aquisition, video editing, creating guides, beta testing patches, creating Unity prefabs, recording sounds and a whole bunch of other things. Some require skills in their specific area, others require nothing more than a bit of time and a willingness to help.

I will be posting a thread in the game community forum with a request for assistance. If you feel that you would like to help out in raising support and awareness regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, do not hesitate to make a post or contact me. Any help will be appreciated, but please note that this neither is nor ever will be a commercial project and there's no budget, so there's no pay involved for anyone.

Best regards

Mathias
