Sovereignty: Crown of Kings

State of the Game - Oct 12th 2015

As always, we continue to push forwards on getting the game ready for the EA2 release - we're now down to 6 remaining tasks.

Here is a short list of some of the things which were tackled in the last week:

Save/Load game in battle now works
Spells now have working animations
Fixed a number of issues with "Trade Arrived" events - see below
Fixed a number of save issues
Fixed a number of small UI issues (sunset animation, list highlighting, etc)
Fixed some crashes (Auto battle and trade related)

"Trade Arrived" is a new event which notifies the player that they have received resources or money from a trade - no more missed trades and wondering when your goods will arrive.

This week we're showing some images from tactical battle - the attack and movement arrows have all been updated to use the same style as the campaign map:

State of the Game - 5th Oct 2015

We spent most of the week focused on fixing bugs and on adding the last missing features to the OpenGL build, here's a sample of the things we fixed and added:

- Map scrolling when mouse is at screen edge
- Fixed initial armies to prevent multiple unique units
- Ironman mode now working correctly
- Several save game bugs (esp. ironman) resolved
- Fixed map not resetting properly after quit to menu
- Various UI issues fixed

We have about a dozen smaller outstanding issues left at this point, as well as one larger one (the realm-specific campaigns).

This week, we have a screenshot of the Current Trade tab of the Foreign Affairs screen. This panel not only shows any ongoing trades between your realm and others, but will also tell you when any agents carrying trade goods will arrive in your realm.

State of the game - 28th Sep 2015

Another busy week of bug fixing and cleaning up.

We spent some more time on the tutorial, fixing text issues, and resolving a number of minor bugs.

Sound and music are now fully working in the opengl version, a number of small bugs in the main game were fixed.

The Foriegn Affairs screen's Current Trade tab is now working, with lists of not only the currently ongoing trades, but also any trade which is pending (trade where the agent has not yet arrived, so that you can see at a glance when you will be getting the goods you have traded for).

Tactical battle had some issues with unit movement which have now been resolved.

A long-standing issue - extra stacks appearing in provinces - has finally been dealt with.

We have started making the events system work (the messages in the upper-left corner), and to go with that, both plague and Harvest Faires are working again.

This week's screenshot shows the new layout of the Resources pull out panel - resources are ordered by the quantity in stock, resources you have none of are darkened.

All of the pull out panels have been redesigned to have the same look and feel, and reorganised to provide more useful information.

State of the game - 21st Sep 2015

Another monday, another update.

This week we finished the core of the tutorial, so it's now all working - we're still running tests on it, trying to find all the ways in which people could unintentionally break it and blocking them from doing so.

We have also been working on a number of bugs and smaller updates this week:

  • Fixed bug causing class buttons on purchase screen to vanish
  • Irregulars now take less damage when using Hit and Run
  • Fixed resources on purchase screen not updating when closing Marketplace
  • Provinces which the player cannot afford to upgrade no longer have an upgrade button
  • Gixed a bug causing considerable AI lag

Finally, we have added a new item to the game UI - each map mode now comes with instructions and a colour key to let you know what all of the different colours on the map actually mean

In the image below, you can see this in action on the relations view - where you can see how other realms feel anout you, or which ones are allies and enemies. You can also use the buttons in this view to trade with other realms, or to declare war, offer peace, or offer alliances.

State of the Game - 14th Sep 2015

This weeks update is fairly short - we've been working on the tutorial, as indicated last week.

Almost everything is now working properly, there are still some outstanding issues with the tactical battle portion of the tutorial which we hope to deal with today, allowing us to move on to other areas.

Since there isn't really much news to report, here's an image of the realm selection screen as it now appears. As noted before, this screen now allows for scrolling and zooming as well, making it easier to pick out small realms.

State of the game - 7th Sep 2015

As promised yesterday, this is the first of a series of weekly updates, letting you know how we are progressing on the upcoming release - there have been a lot of questions about how far along it is and what we're currently working on, and this allows us to address these issues without having to repeat the information in a dozen different posts.

As this is the first update, I'm going to start by explaining what the EA2 update will include and give an overview of where we are currently at.

EA2 will include a rebuilt game engine (based on OpenGL), which will be faster, smoother and less prone to crashing than the current one. It will also include updates to the UI, the AI, and the auto battle system.

New Engine
The OpenGL engine is faster than the old DirectX one, far more stable, and has been rebuilt to make a lot of the upcoming future additions to the game easier and faster for us to implement. This has led to some game systems having to be re-implemented - in particular scripted elemnts like the campaigns and the tutorial.

Of particular note is the loading time - the game now starts and loads almost instantly, and tactical battles also start almost instantly.

UI
Placeholder/missing artwork replaced, especially on the information panels
Improvements to lists and long text sections (auto scrollbars, more flexible lists)
Better looking text in general
Nicer dynamic realm names on the map
Minimap views now moved to the main map (political, diplomatic, etc)
Realm select map looks better, allows scroll and zoom

AI
Improving the campaign AI in particular, getting it to make less stupid decisions, and act in a more strategic manner. Also enhancing the personalities of AIs to make warmongers more warlike, etc.

Auto Battle
Improved the auto battle screen layout
Auto battles now have units in proper formations
Auto battle target selection now much more intelligent - targets will be selected based on ability to deal damage to them (especially in later combat rounds)

Current state
The auto battle, UI, and AI work is largely completed, we are working on getting the tutorial working again right now, and that will be followed by the other remaining campaigns. Then we have a series of known issues to target, and finally further testing and fixing of whatever bugs that should end up revealing.

If all goes to plan, the tutorial will be completed and working this week, we'll update you in the progress next monday.

Sovereignty: Crown of Kings Version 1.8 is out!

Another update is ready! Beta patch 1.8 is available now. For the time being, the new build 1.8 will be available from the beta branch, build 1.7 will now be moved to the non-beta branch.

The main feature of this update is the introduction of the Irregular unit class. This class is where units which don't really fit into the typical structure of an army can be found.

All Irregular units have the Hit and Run ability - when they attack another unit, they will try to dodge out of the way of any damage they might take in return - if they are able to they will move one hex and only take half of the damage. If they cannot move they will take full damage. Units moving in this manner are not considered to be retreating, and cannot be captured by a unit with Shackles.

The way resolution settings are auto-detected has also changed slightly - if you experience issues with flickering in particular, deleting your settings.cfg file from My Documents\Sovereignty will force auto-detection, which should now correctly select the correct settings.

All changes in this update:

- Fixed rebel armies vanishing on loading a saved game
- Added Irregulars unit class
- Unit costs rebalanced (generally increased)
- New unit portrait: Hadran the Enforcer
- Changes to resolution auto-detection

Thanks again for your feedback and keep reporting bugs.

Update to EA 1.7

Update 1.7 is now available on the beta branch, update 1.6 has been moved to the main branch - updates will be applied automatically.

If you are interested in opting in to the beta, see here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/312430/discussions/0/615085406653278222/

Patch Information

Update 1.7 brings the second half of the unit medal update - all units in all realms now have access to 4 possible promotions, which they gain from proving their worth on the field of battle.

Upcoming Features

In the next update, we're working to bring you a new unit class - the Irregulars.

As the name suggests, these units are ones which exist outside of the usual structure of the army, and do things a little differently.

Irregulars comprise a number of loosely organized and often independently-functioning units. They use non-standard hit-and-run tactics, and commonly retreat in the face of attack. Irregulars utilize all manner of harassing tactics while attempting to stay out of harm's way.

Irregulars will come with a special class ability, just like other classes:

Hit-and-run: After making an attack (whether Ranged or Melee), Irregulars retreat 1 hex, if able. If an Irregular retreats successfully in this way, it takes half damage. Shackles does not interact with this ability.

The new class and it's ability will shake things up a bit on the battlefield, so your tactics will have to adapt to both using and fighting against the new unit type.
