Space Hulk: Deathwing

Beta Survival Guide

Greetings Librarians,

The last hours have seen countless waves of reckless Terminators purge Genestealers in the Space Hulk Olethros!

The Emperor is proud to announce that over 1 million Genestealers have already been purified since the Beta launched!

We're delighted to see that so many of you dived into the Beta and posted feedback on the official forum. The main goal of this Beta is to collect player feedback and the amounts of reports we already received is going to be very helpful when ironing out Space Hulk: Deathwing before release.

We're aware that some of you are experiencing major technical issues - we are working around the clock to fix them. The vast majority of the issues you are encountering are known and listed in our Known Issues post.

As a reminder, the version of Space Hulk: Deathwing that you have access to is still in development, and not in a finalized state.

Here is a short guide to help you slash your way through the horde of Genestealers!

Server Lobby

  • When opening the server browser, there will be a delay before all servers are displayed. Please be patient, they'll appear after a short delay!
  • The server lobby display isn't finalised right now. Use the "Quickmatch" button to find a game automatically.
  • When you hit the "Join" button, you currently don't get any visual feedback, but the button works - you may just have to wait a little while.
  • You can also join the game of a friend directly through Steam. Friend List > Right click on your friend > Join Game.

Game Lobby

  • You can invite your Steam friends by clicking on the "+".

  • You may have noticed on the right-hand side of the lobby screen, a UI element in which you can only select Chapter 2 (as this is the only chapter available in the beta). This currently doesn't really have much of a functional use, but in the full game the host will be able to build a playlist of multiple chapters to play through in one session.

  • When building your squad, we'd recommend carefully considering your team's composition of classes. In particular, you'll probably have a very hard time without an Apothecary (who can heal up your squad). If you want to survive the Space Hulk, bring an Apothecary!

In-Game

  • Press (i) to change your class and/or weapon (if you unlocked new weapons).

  • Press (y) to chat with your squad.

  • When your whole squad dies, the screen displayed is a Placeholder. In the final release, it will be where players vote for the next map, but the Beta only features 1 map, hence the issue. If you wait 1 minute, the host will automatically reload the map and then the guests will reload too.

The Beta has started!

Greetings Brothers,

We’re thrilled to announce that the Beta for all preorder players has started!

The beta will automatically be added into your Steam library.

It features:
  • The Tutorial - strongly advised to get a good grasp on the basics of the game.
  • Multiplayer Cooperative Mode for Chapter 2.

Please keep in mind that the game is still under continued development, and that this version doesn’t reflect the final quality of the game - everything is subject to change.

Thanks to the Closed Technical Beta, many player feedbacks - mostly technical reports - have been implemented into the game. We have many more coming for the official release!

You can take a look at the latest improvements, as well as post your feedback, on the official forum and Steam community hub.

Make sure to read our Known Issues list before reporting any problem, as well as our Gameplay Tips.

There is no NDA on this Beta. You can share it as much as you want through videos or screenshots.

Feel free to discuss about the game, as your feedback will help us in adding the final touches before launch!

The Emperor commends you for your support and time – have fun purging the Xenos tide!

Solo Campaign Gameplay

With only one month left until Space Hulk: Deathwing's release, you can now watch 17 minutes of uncut gameplay from the solo campaign. Clocking at around 15 hours of gameplay - more if players take time to explore, finding hidden relics on the way - the campaign boasts huge environments, with a wealth of optional areas and secret rooms to discover.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCO0nWkKKsU

Space Hulk: Deathwing's extensive solo campaign is written in collaboration with Black Library author and Dark Angels specialist, Gav Thorpe, as well as cooperative multiplayer.

The solo campaign sees you playing as a Librarian of the Dark Angels' 1st Company, the Deathwing, taking on swarms of Genestealers in the Space Hulk Olethros with Storm Bolter and Force Sword in hand. The Librarian is a Psyker, granting him access to powerful psychic abilities such as chain lighting, a powerful lightning bolt, which arcs between multiple enemies; and Shockwave, which blasts enemies back from you.

You will need to utilize the full armory of the Deathwing company, your powerful psychic abilities, as well as the squad members under your command to fend off the xenos threat.

The Genestealers adapt their behaviour, based on their numbers, their type, and your actions. Commanding your teammates to cover you, block doors to prevent genestealers from flanking you, heal you, or hold a key position, is vital to survival in the depths of the Space Hulk.

By playing the campaign you'll also unlock new weapons for use by you and your squad mates, along with gaining experience to spend on three skill trees to unlock powerful new abilities.

Space Hulk: Deathwing is available for download on PC, December 9 before landing on consoles in early 2017. Pre-purchasing through Steam will gain you access to the pre-order beta, beginning end of November.

For The Lion!

Greetings Librarians!

The release of Space Hulk: Deathwing draws near, arriving December 9th on PC. To help prepare for the battles that await you, we’re publishing a series of Devblogs to tell you about some of the features and gameplay elements you can look forward to when you venture deep into the Space Hulk and face the Genestealer menace.

Solo Campaign

Space Hulk: Deathwing features a full solo campaign, with a twisting narrative co-written by renowned Black Library author Gav Thorpe.

During your journey into the Space Hulk Olethros, you’ll be accompanied by two AI-controlled Terminator squad mates. Brother Barachiel is your Heavy Support, unleashing destruction in battle with weapons such as the Assault Cannon and Plasma Cannon. Brother Nahum is your Apothecary, healing up your squad whenever possible.

You can issue commands to your AI squad mates using a radial menu that can be brought up at any time. Beyond having them follow you on your position, you can also tell them to move to a specific point, guard an area, seal doors, ask Nahum to heal a squad member, and more.

There are four difficulty modes to choose from in Space Hulk: Deathwing’s solo campaign:
  • Disciple (Easy) – The Emperor protects you from the Xenos.
  • Chapter Champion (Normal) – You’re used to life on the battlefield.
  • Lion’s Sword (Hard) – What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
  • No Mercy (Hardest) – To die for the emperor is glorious!

During the solo campaign, you’ll be playing as a Librarian of the Dark Angels’ Deathwing chapter. This means you have access to a range of Psychic abilities to use in battle, which includes the following:
  • Shockwave - Releases a flow of energy around the Librarian, pushing back and hurting the enemies in a 360-degree arc.
  • Chain Lightning - Lightning strikes the first enemy it hits. Turrets and sentries are particularly susceptible to this power.
  • Inferno - The Librarian draws his powers to create an image of vengeful flame, carbonising all enemies in a line in front of him.
  • Spontaneous combustion – Causes an enemy to explode, creating a damaging flame blast around them.
  • Vortex of doom - The Librarian tears the veil of reality; victims near the vortex are pulverised by the power of the warp.
  • Lion’s Shadow - The Librarian teleports himself inside an enemy, before exploding out of them.
  • Lion’s Nemesis - The Librarian uses his mighty powers to become a fearsome Zealot. Just one hit can slay any normal enemy.

These abilities are unlocked as you progress through the campaign, giving you more options to deal with the Xenos menace! As your squad ventures deeper into Olethros, you’ll also uncover dark secrets, remarkable environments and greater dangers. Of course, going solo isn’t your only option…

Purging With Friends

All missions and chapters are playable in the online co-operative mode. Up to four of the Emperor’s finest can play together at once, with options for joining from the server list, hosting your own game, or automatically finding a suitable game by selecting ‘QuickMatch’.

The server list contains a number of filters to make it easy to find a suitable game. These include options for LAN only, passwords, languages and more.

From the game lobby screen, players can select from a range of different options to customize their co-operative experience. Hosts can invite their Steam friends directly to the lobby from here. One of four difficulties must be chosen, as well as the option to turn on Friendly Fire.

It’s possible to play through the chapters in the same order as the solo campaign, or select a single chapter. The host can also construct their own ‘mini campaign’ by putting together a playlist of selected chapters in any order.

Each player is able to select the class they’d like to play from one of the following:
  • Librarian - The only class with access to Psychic powers, including Shockwave and Chain Lightning and Spontaneous Combustion.
  • Apothecary – Equipped with his Narthecium, the Apothecary can heal his squad mates and activate a heal aura.
  • Assault Speciality – Unrivalled in melee combat, this Terminator uses hammers, maces and Lightning Claws to rip apart the Xenos hordes.
  • Heavy Weapon Speciality - Focuses on tearing enemies apart with highly destructive weapons, including the Assault Cannon and Plasma Cannon.
  • Tactical Speciality – Allows fallen squad mates to return to battle, and has access to a legendary modified Plasma Cannon – the Spear of Caliban.

Many combinations of classes are possible, though it’s advised to bring a balanced squad that accommodated for each class’ weaknesses for the best chance at survival!

Stay tuned! We’ll soon release more information regarding the exact starting date of the upcoming beta, and how you can gain access.

To Battle, Brothers!

Greetings Librarians!

The release of Space Hulk: Deathwing draws near, arriving December 9th on PC. To help prepare for the battles that await you, we’ve written up this Devblog to tell you about some of the features and gameplay elements you can look forward to when you venture deep into the Space Hulk and face the Genestealer menace.

The Armoury

Before entering the fray, you will equip yourself (and your AI squad-mates if playing solo) with the best weapons the Imperium has to offer. With a wealth of melee and ranged weaponry combinations available, you might be outnumbered in battle, but you’ll never be outgunned!

Weapons you’ll be using to purge Genestealers include:

  • Storm Bolter – Double-barreled version of the classic bolter. Standard issue for the Terminators, each self-propelled bolt explodes with devastating effect after impacting with its target.
  • Assault Cannon – Six-barreled, self-loading, and deadly. This fast-firing weapon can deal incredible damage, but is susceptible to jamming during sustained bursts.
  • Heavy Flamer – Short-ranged weapon that spews highly volatile streams of flammable liquid that ignites upon contact with air. Particularly destructive against tightly compacted swarms of Xenos.
  • Plasma Cannon – Uses plasma technology to unleash superheated matter on its victims. Blasts from the Plasma Cannon can generate the destructive heat of a small sun – earning them the nickname of ‘Sun Guns’ among some of the Imperial populace. This power comes at a cost – the Plasma Cannon can be prone to overheating.
  • Lightning Claw – Each Claw is a powered gauntlet, fitted with four Adamantium blades and surrounded by a matter-disrupting power field. Dual-wielded Lightning Claws are capable of carving through armour and flesh with ease.
  • Thunder Hammer – This weapon incorporates an energy field generator within its head, triggered to active whenever the Thunder Hammer strikes its target. Upon contact, an incredible amount of force is released, resulting in a blast of energy and a deafeningly roll of thunder.

Your Armoury will be expanded even further beyond the weapons listed above, as you venture deeper and deeper into the Space Hulk. Each weapon has specific strengths and weaknesses – Librarians wishing to survive the space hulk will need to equip themselves accordingly.

Librarians are also able to select the Psychic powers they wish to use in battle. Up to three powers may be equipped at once, with each ability activated at the press of a hotkey, and limited by a cooldown. Unlike weaponry, Psychic powers are unlocked through a skill tree. By default, you’ll start with the Shockwave and Chain Lightning powers, with more becoming available as you progress. From forcing back enemies in a 360-degree arc, to purifying Xenos with holy fire, Librarians can adapt to any combat situation!

The Genestealers

Acting as the spearhead for a Hive Fleet, the Genestealers are a species of Tyranid armed with ferocious speed, cunning intellect and large claws that can slash through even the strongest armor. Space Hulk: Deathwing sees you and your squad facing swarms of these Genestealers – but to overcome the Xenos tide, you’ll first need to understand how these devastating foes fight in battle.

The primary strength of the Genestealers lies in their numbers. A lone Genestealer is no match for the firepower of a Terminator squad. However, if a Xenos swarm is able to fully surround your squad, their powerful claws can make short work of you.

The Genestealers in Space Hulk: Deathwing can be unpredictable, and will do everything they can do overwhelm you. If a lone Genestealer spots you in the distance, it may run away in order to join a larger ambush later on. Conversely, a large group may split in to two smaller groups, before attacking from all sides.

When the Genestealers are up-close and personal, it’s a good idea to engage them in melee combat. They may have those claws, but your squad has the finest Force Swords, Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammers in the universe!

As well as cutting down the Xenos with powerful blows, players can parry their attacks – particularly important when dealing with the larger Genestealer variants. Be warned though, as parrying will not protect your back and sides!

Positioning is of vital importance in Space Hulk: Deathwing. Forcing Genestealers into a chokepoint is the most efficient way of gunning them down in great numbers under a hail of Storm Bolter fire, or dishing out heavy area-of-effect damage from your psychic powers. Of course, you won’t always be fighting them in tight corridors, and wide open areas are often a convenient place for an unexpected Genestealer ambush…

Surviving Olethros

You and your squad will journey deep into the heart of Olethros, an immense Space Hulk that’s recently emerged from the warp into Imperial space. The Olethros is made up of derelict spaceships, vast asteroids and debris – this mix of different environments means you’ll need to adapt your combat style to take on the Genestealer horde.

Thankfully, you have a few tactical advantages available. Your auspex scanner, visible in the bottom-right corner of your HUD, is constantly scanning the local area. This gives feedback on the direction of incoming threats, letting you position your squad accordingly. Unfortunately, you won’t be given any idea on the exact numbers or types of enemy you’ll be encountering!

Much like the tabletop game from which Space Hulk: Deathwing takes its name, the entrances to rooms and corridors are very important. To help stem the tide of Genestealers, you may decide to seal a door shut, slowing down the swarm as the Xenos navigate to an alternate route.

Occasionally, you’ll come across doors that are already sealed shut. When this happens, you’re presented with an interesting choice: find a different (and slower) path to your objective, or smash down the door, giving the Genestealers another entrance to surround you from.

Stay tuned for future dev blogs, where we’ll go into more detail about online co-op, more combat details and other exciting features you can expect when Space Hulk: Deathwing releases later this month!

Pre-order on Steam now and you’ll get access to the pre-order Beta, 15% off, and one in-game weapon – the Lost Mace of Corswain.

Greetings Librarians!

Space Hulk: Deathwing showcases some of its big guns in this latest trailer! As the Dark Angels Terminators purify the Space Hulk from the Xeno menace, witness the gunplay of a selection of weapons, the environments and the atmosphere of this upcoming game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YmaDbqfO7E

Deathwing Terminators carry some of the biggest and most powerful weapons available to the Imperium. Even the smallest of weapons they employ, the Storm Bolter, is typically a mounted weapon, firing rocket-propelled shells in place of bullets.

The trailer showcases the deadly assortment of some of the firearms, melee and energy weapons you will wield. The classic Storm Bolter is of course here, alongside Redemption, a unique spread-shot variant capable of ricocheting shots around corners.

The Heavy Flamer lays fire on walls and floors, cutting off choke points and punishing those who dare cross the line. The Storm Shield can withstand heavy enemy fire, and the Thunder Hammer carries so much latent power that striking it upon either surface and flesh causes an area-of-effect shockwave around the point of impact.

The labyrinthine Space Hulk that you will explore is dark and dangerous, infested by Xenos. At any time, Genestealers can ambush you, making use of the walls, floorspaces, and ceiling vents. The once-dormant Genestealers have made the Space Hulk their home, and will use every advantage they can get to strike you and your team from your blind spots, and pounce on you from above. True to their swarm-like social structure, they will behave accordingly, and may even fall back to regroup, in order to attack again in greater numbers.

Don the Terminator power armor, take up your Storm Bolter, and bring glory to the Emperor in Space Hulk: Deathwing when the game launches in November 2016 on PC!

Pre-order now the game on Steam and get 15% off the price of the game and one in-game weapon – the Lost Mace of Corswain.
